Katherine Helmond is under-rated

Okay, [italic]Who's the Boss[/italic] sucked out loud, but [italic]Soap[/italic] was great and she was great in it, and she was good in the movies she made for Terry Gilliam. I also remember seeing her in a gay-themed indie movie called [italic]Inside Monkey Zetterland[/italic] where she played a soap actress with a lesbian daughter; Ricki Lake played her stalker.

Katherine Helmond was a respected and well-loved actress. Must you start threads with trolling untrue statements, OP?

She deserved a better post-[italic]Soap[/italic] sitcom. Frankly, [italic]Webster[/italic] was less of a comedown from that for Cathryn Damon. But then again, she won the Emmy.

she was also great in the small role she had in "the autobiography of miss jane pittman"... i think that was the first time i ever saw her and didn't know who she was until later..

She and Cicely Tyson worked together again in 1997’s Mrs. Scrooge.

She was a great actress. Could do both drama and comedy very well.

And was, by all accounts, a very nice person too.

i bet helmond would have been fascinating, so interesting to talk to over a long dinner or spent a day with..

Even by TV sitcom standards, I don't understand how a charming character such as Lois Whelan could produce such a mega-cunt daughter like Debra Barone.

Susan Harris wanted her to play Sophia on The Golden Girls, but she was already committed to Who's The Boss.

by Anonymousreply 8January 10, 2020 11:25 PM

How many people who knew her because of her second sitcom lived in places where the ABC affiliate didn’t show her first one?

by Anonymousreply 9January 12, 2020 5:33 PM

How would Golden Girls have been different if Katherine was Sophia?

by Anonymousreply 10January 12, 2020 5:44 PM

She was enchanting on Soap, when I was a young gayling I wanted to be her.

Estelle Getty's take was "direct attack". She was playing Italian mother, no holds barred.

I think Katherine Helmond's take would have been more sly. She would have given a character that was ditzy and sweet, but not as "in your face" as Estelle Getty.

For example, there's a scene where Sophia is cooking sauce. She gets the other women to taste it and they burn their mouths. Estelle Getty's Sophia gets a laugh out of that. I think Katherine Helmond's would have done the same thing, but rather than gleefully laugh out loud, she would have quietly laughed and blamed it on her not knowing it was that hot.

I think Estelle Getty was the correct choice considering the other three actresses they chose.

What if Katherine Helmond had played Beth in Ordinary People?

by Anonymousreply 13January 12, 2020 8:59 PM

R13: When both those shows were up against each other in the fall of 1991, GG won. The other one was better under its original name: [italic]Gimme A Break![/italic].

[quote]Who's the Boss sucked out loud

That's your opinion. Given that she was nominated for two Emmys for it, some people obviously liked it.

And no show that has Judith Light in it can suck. It was a decent sitcom for its time that hasn't aged that bad.

Well this one did and so did that Jeffrey Tambor atrocity she was also in. You must be her press agent. It wasn’t funny in the slightest and both the kids were horrible actors. At least with Sam Malone and Diane Chambers you can root for them even if they’re totally mismatched, and unlike this travesty their show was actually funny.

by Anonymousreply 16January 12, 2020 9:56 PM

If that show was so good, then how come it couldn’t sell more DVD units than [italic]Webster [/italic], [italic] Punky Brewster [/italic], or even [italic] Small Wonder [italic]?

She deserved an Emmy for [italic]Soap[/italic] but she didn’t get one. I watched that show four times in a row on tape from start to finish and I adored it and still do to this day. That’s what she deserves to be remembered for.
