He adapted "The Graduate" for the screen.
Aww, goodnight Buck. You were great.

Another great one gone.

His best work was What's Up, Doc?

I didnāt realize he was that old. You lose contact with people and think of them as forever the age they were when you last saw them. Itās always a rude awakening to read āso and so died at 89ā... Itās going to be a steady stream of this now that the Boomers are all getting to be 80+

Not quite all of us. Not yet.

I only knew him from early Saturday Night Live appearances.

I just now finished watching THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (in honor of Bowie's birthday today) and was wondering WEHT Buck Henry. Logged onto DL and see that he just passed.
Requiescat in pace.

R11 Me, too. I liked him and I have fond memories of staying up late as a pre-teen and watching SNL when it was new and cool and I felt trendy and hip. I literally never saw him anywhere else - at least than I can recall. He was sweet. He lived a long life and I send warm wishes that the long sleep brings him a peaceful rest.

Uncle Roy!! No more glass bottom boats :(

I first saw him on "That Was The Week That Was" (1964 and 1965), very droll and understated. I assumed he was gay but he was married (to a woman) so maybe not. Big talent.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 9, 2020 1:49 PM |
Wow. Not a lot of love here for Buck. He co-created (along with Mel Brooks,) the Get Smart tv show back in the 60ās, and he wrote a whopping 138 of its episodes.
Heās the one who came up with Hymie the Robot (played by the hot Dick Gautier,) and The Cone of Silence, among other things.
Surely more DLers have been entertained by Buck Henry. Maybe you just didnāt know it.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 9, 2020 6:40 PM |
Buck would have never lived to 90.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 9, 2020 6:42 PM |
I didn't know he wrote "To Die For." It's the only Nicole Kidman movie I like.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 9, 2020 8:06 PM |
That was fun r24. I always adored Buck Henry.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 9, 2020 11:24 PM |
If not for glorifying a pedophile, he would be unknown today, which he pretty much is.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 10, 2020 12:17 AM |
Weāll miss you Buck, and your genius. Thanks for all of it.

Can you imagine SNL having a writer host now?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 10, 2020 6:49 AM |
Like Tina Fey? No, couldnāt imagine that.

He didn't glorify pedophilia you fucking idiots. He shone a light on something NOBODY talked about.

Ignore the fraus like in real life R33.

I met him and his wife at a private dinner about 5/6 years ago. They struck me as odd, and their relationship struck me as odd (I canāt really explain why), but they were extremely nice, down to earth people. We shared an Uber home. I wish I remembered more from that evening.
RIP. And I love that Lady Douchbag sketch.

He shed some light on it, while we showed its dark underbelly.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 11, 2020 12:16 PM |
I always thought he was a cute little gay man....still do.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 11, 2020 1:13 PM |
Wow. 38 replies and no one has mentioned that he wrote the screenplay for The Graduate. Or that he co-directed Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty.
I first remember seeing him in Gloria with Gena Rowlands as a kid.
Understated yet radically seminal talent.
If you can, find Milos Formanās first movie - Taking Off starring Henry and a hodge podge of 70s/80s talent. Everyone from Vincent Schiavelli to Paul Benedict, Georgia Engel to Audra Lindsey. A very young Kathy Bates and Carly Simon are in there too. Funny as hell movie about a square suburban father clashing with the counterculture as he searches for his bohemian daughter in downtown Manhattan,
There was a thread about 60s movies that take place in NYC and I would say this is a FANTASTIC movie from the 70s in NYC. Great footage from that era of the east village, upper east side, etc.
Anyway. Love Buck. Always have.

"Taking Off" wasn't Milos Forman's first movie.

Iām shocked his passing didnāt garner more attention from the press. He was a bigger deal than he was given credit for.
