Ricky Gervais attacks Hollywood in bleeping Golden Globes monologue

“This is the last time I’m hosting these awards,” Ricky Gervais said moments after taking the stage at the 77th Golden Globe Awards for his fifth hosting gig. Based on the audience reaction to his bridge-burning, F-bomb-laden monologue, this might be the last time he’s allowed in Hollywood... let alone at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual shindig. The mood in the room was essentially summed up by everyone’s favorite L.A. neighbor Tom Hanks — this year’s recipient of the HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award — whose face displayed an expression of shock and disgust every time the cameras found him in the crowd.

If Gervais, who took to the stage with a full glass of beer, noticed Hanks giving him the stinkeye, it didn’t stop the host from going for the jugular. He also didn’t apologize for any of his jokes, including the seemingly transphobic tweets he made on Twitter before the ceremony. Questionable Twitter habits, of course, are what cost Kevin Hart his hosting spot at last year’s Oscar ceremony, and Gervais gave the almost-host a shoutout. “Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars because of some offensive tweets,” he said, before going on to draw a distinction with his own situation. “The HFPA can barely speak English. They barely know what Twitter is! I got the offer by fax. Remember, they’re just jokes. We’re all going to die soon, and there’s no sequel.”

One of those jokes that noticeably raised Hanks’s ire was Gervais’s suggestion that the license plate on his HFPA-hired limo was made by Felicity Huffman during her brief prison stay after she was swept up in the college admissions scandal. “It’s her daughter I feel sorry for,” Gervais said, shushing the room. “That must be the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to her. And her dad was in Wild Hogs.”

Gervais proved anything but embarrassed as he continued to call out the rich and famous on their privileged lifestyle. “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech,” he warned. “You're in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God and f*** off. OK?”

Of course, that rule didn’t apply to the host himself, who took more than a few potshots at current political events. “In this room are some of the most important TV and film executives in the world, and they all have one thing in common: They’re all terrified of Ronan Farrow,” Gervais said, referring to the journalist whose reporting has helped bring down such Hollywood titans as Harvey Weinstein and Les Moonves. Meanwhile, tech world titan, Tim Cook, looked on stone-faced as Gervais praised Apple TV+’s marquee series The Morning Show as a “superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing made by a company who owns sweatshops in China. You say you’re woke but the companies you work for — Apple, Amazon, Disney — if ISIS started a streaming service, you would call your agent, wouldn’t you?”

Gervais didn’t leave his own employer, Netflix, out of his streaming service broadside. “You could binge-watch the entire first season of After Life and it’s still more fun than this,” he said, referring to his most recent series about a man who contemplates suicide after his wife dies. “Season 2 is on the way, so in the end he obviously didn’t kill himself — just like Jeffrey Epstein. I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care!”

Even as he spent much of his monologue stoking Hollywood’s ire, he did pick one topic everyone in the room could agree on: the craziness that was Universal’s mega-bomb musical, Cats. “The world got to see James Corden as fat p****. He was also in the movie Cats, but nobody saw that! And the reviews! I saw one that said ‘This is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs.’ But Dame Judi Dench defended the film, saying it was the role she was born to play.” At that point, Gervais arrived at a joke that even he wasn’t sure he could deliver. And, in fact, the audience at home didn’t hear it at all, since NBC hit the “bleep” button with extreme force. But here’s the line, direct from Yahoo Entertainment’s reporter in the room: “Because she loves nothing better than plunking herself down on the carpet, lifting her leg and and licking her own minge.”

We’re guessing that Tom Hanks still hasn’t gotten over that one.

by Anonymousreply 1January 6, 2020 8:36 AM

I know that since it's the Hollywood FOREIGN Press, they're looking for a non-American comedian.

Therefore, I think that Trevor Noah would be a great replacement for Gervais.

Trevor is South African, he's young, he's funny, and he's PLEASANT.

Gervais is just a bitter old fuck.

by Anonymousreply 2January 6, 2020 8:38 AM

He was great, I enjoyed it.

Those actors were merely faking shock and outrage...afterall, they are friends with those "picked on" and can you imagine if your friend saw you laughing your head off at his/her expense? Fragile egos in lala land.

I'm putting a few folks on the death list after watching the show. Joaquin Phoenix was wasted and high on something.

by Anonymousreply 3January 6, 2020 8:41 AM

I read the Corden joke to my boyfriend last night, and he immediately assumed I read it in a comment here.

by Anonymousreply 4January 6, 2020 9:18 AM

Tom Hanks looked like such a prissy cunt clutching his pearls all dramatically. ffs.

by Anonymousreply 5January 6, 2020 10:13 AM

LOL Ricky's an asshole but I love him.

by Anonymousreply 6January 6, 2020 10:37 AM

I'd forgotten he hosted it until Twitter put something in my "Explore" tab about it. It seems unlikely anyone was really offended, because no one paid enough attention to him to be offended. Dozens of people I follow were tweeting about the Globes but not a one said anything about Gervais.

by Anonymousreply 7January 6, 2020 10:41 AM

It sounds like he was channeling DL.

by Anonymousreply 8January 6, 2020 10:44 AM

Well he's not wrong about celebs and their hypocrisy re Apple and the bit about Huffman was funny, as was his Epstein comment.

by Anonymousreply 9January 6, 2020 10:47 AM

Frankly, Ricky should be declared a DL hero. What superb cuntiness (and all true as well)!

by Anonymousreply 10January 6, 2020 10:48 AM

He should be made an honorary R1, R10.

by Anonymousreply 11January 6, 2020 10:52 AM

The fat pussy joke wasn't bad though it was kind of an easy one, but the bit about Judy licking her own minge was clunky.

I'll get bitched at for this I know, but when Dataloungers are funny, they're funnier than that.

by Anonymousreply 12January 6, 2020 10:57 AM

I didn't see it, but reading the account above, I think it may have been funnier than some of the Comedy Central roasts!

I roared at the James Corden joke.

by Anonymousreply 13January 6, 2020 11:02 AM

His Leo joke was the best.

by Anonymousreply 14January 6, 2020 11:04 AM

[quote] I'll get bitched at for this I know, but when Dataloungers are funny, they're funnier than that

They're American....and gay. So there's that or those, rather.

by Anonymousreply 15January 6, 2020 11:16 AM

He roasts Hollywood every fucking tie. And he's hosted 5 times. Personally, I'd love to see him host every show. Better than some ass-kissing Muppet like Ellen.

by Anonymousreply 16January 6, 2020 11:18 AM

[quote] I roared at the James Corden joke.

Gurl,, cos you is MEAN.

by Anonymousreply 17January 6, 2020 11:18 AM

I love Ricky Gervais. But who is he to criticize the Hollywood “elite” when he’s one of them?

It’s funny to read online comments that praise Ricky for “standing up for real people”. The guy is worth over $100 million, he’s not standing up for anyone, he’s just doing his job as a comedian.

by Anonymousreply 18January 6, 2020 11:24 AM

I loved his whole monologue. I usually like Tom Hanks but fuck him for acting like an offended asshole about it.

by Anonymousreply 19January 6, 2020 11:28 AM

Adam Driver was laughing bless his heart

by Anonymousreply 20January 6, 2020 11:30 AM

He was great. Tom was upset but I wonder why.

by Anonymousreply 21January 6, 2020 11:40 AM

I don’t thinkwhat he said was so bad he probably wasn’t getting the response he wanted which made him have a very bad attitude towards the audience what kind of host says get the fuck out twice ?

I too wonder if he got in trouble backstage like if he didn’t follow script he would be fired on the spot..he carried around a piece of paper most of the night.

Phoenix actually said the worst but very true thing about celebrities who are for the environment but have private jets.

by Anonymousreply 22January 6, 2020 11:41 AM

All the stars bleating on a climate change make me sick and always have. Cate Blanchett is known as Carbon Cate in Australia for a good fucking reason - she jets all over the world all the time even to attend the opening of an envelope. Did she really need to go to the Golden Globes - she had no chance of winning.

And Leo - don't get me started. A few years ago he flew all the way to Sydney to celebrate New Years Eve (with Jamie Foxx & Jonah Hill in in-tow). OK fair enough. But then took a limo drive to Canberra (a good three hour drive from Sydney) to catch at flight back to LA to celebrate New Years Eve AGAIN. And this was in his private jet. He had to drive to Canberra because flights are banned from entering and leaving Sydney from about 10.30pm to 5.30am (or something like that).

They are in no position to pass judgement on us mere mortals. They should be setting an example and only travelling with necessary. I accept that they need to jet off for work - but they don't have to attend all these useless award shows.

Hypocrites the lot of them.

by Anonymousreply 23January 6, 2020 11:51 AM

Ricky Gervais:

“...Bird Box, a movie where people survive by acting like they don’t see a thing, so like working for Harvey Weinstein...”

by Anonymousreply 24January 6, 2020 11:53 AM

I've never understood why there's a push for 'controversial' awards show hosts. The awards crowd has shown repeatedly that they don't like it when the humor gets to0 real and is aimed their way. They just sit there with bitchface. What's the point?

by Anonymousreply 25January 6, 2020 12:09 PM

r25 to entertain the tv viewing audience

by Anonymousreply 26January 6, 2020 12:11 PM

Anyone is better than that traitorous old lush Ellen Degeneres.

by Anonymousreply 27January 6, 2020 12:12 PM

Genius. It was sheer genius. I adore ricky Gervais.

by Anonymousreply 28January 6, 2020 12:15 PM

[quote]to entertain the tv viewing audience

But pissing off the nominees and the other attendees so that they sit on their hands frowning is only entertaining to people like us on DL. To the average viewer, who makes up the majority of the audience, it's just uncomfortable and and a bizarre choice.

by Anonymousreply 29January 6, 2020 12:16 PM

The best thing Gervais ever did was after he introduced Mel Gibson a year or two ago says " just have one question, what the hell are sugar tits?"

by Anonymousreply 30January 6, 2020 12:19 PM

Sure he's funny and sure the stars deserve it, but some situations do better with a lighter touch.

by Anonymousreply 31January 6, 2020 12:24 PM

People think awards shows are some sort of hallowed ground where nothing untoward must ever happen.

by Anonymousreply 32January 6, 2020 12:26 PM

Gervais said it himself a few times ago - I keep taking the piss and they keep asking me back. I think he figured, this is my last time, let's nuke these bitches.

by Anonymousreply 33January 6, 2020 12:32 PM

Please sod off with the "rich people can't talk about climate change if they take private jets" right wing talking point.

by Anonymousreply 34January 6, 2020 12:33 PM

I love how the author tries to toss in "transphobia" to trigger Twitter and Reddit. When they don't mention what he actually said but go to the buzzwords, it is never actually that bad. Labeling it as "transphobic" causes dumb people to automatically assume the worst, much like JK Rowling's tweet.

by Anonymousreply 35January 6, 2020 12:36 PM

At the end of the day these people are not curing cancer, they are entertainers. Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke.

by Anonymousreply 36January 6, 2020 12:37 PM

R34 Are you the Republican talking point troll?

by Anonymousreply 37January 6, 2020 12:39 PM

r34 well it is kind of a point. If you are so concerned with climate change why are you flying in a private jet?

by Anonymousreply 38January 6, 2020 12:47 PM

Always happy to see straight people defending other straight people when they make anti-gay jokes.

You're a true hero Ricky and so, so brave.

Now fuck off back to England where you were a fucking nobody, you great fat pudding.

by Anonymousreply 39January 6, 2020 12:50 PM

At least his monologue wasn't boring.

by Anonymousreply 40January 6, 2020 12:52 PM

[quote] I’m putting a few folks on the death list after watching the show. Joaquin Phoenix was wasted and high on something.

Was this the first time you’d ever seen Joaquin at an awards show or talk show? He’s wasted and high on something every time he makes a public appearance!

I pretty much loathe Gervais and his smug "did I just say that?" act, but he's usually on his best behavior on the Graham Norton Show. Either he genuinely enjoys being there or he knows Graham could take the kid gloves off and burn him to ash if he gets out of line.

by Anonymousreply 41January 6, 2020 12:53 PM

R41 I think most British comedians don't fuck with Graham because aside from having an acerbic tongue, he's apparently a scraper and won't think twice about slapping the shit out of someone. I read that on some gossipy UK blog years ago.

by Anonymousreply 42January 6, 2020 12:55 PM

^^^Should be scrapper.

I'll "oh dear" myself.

by Anonymousreply 43January 6, 2020 12:57 PM

Someone needs to call out Joaquin for letting Casey Affleck sexually abuse two women on the set of their “film” and doing nothing about it. That’s way worse than flying on a fucking plane. Also he’s an alcoholic who was drunk off his ass.

by Anonymousreply 44January 6, 2020 12:58 PM

R34 It's hardly a 'right wing talking point' as you put it because people of the right and left are all guilty of it. It's a valid observation. People get sick of anyone, regardless of their political leanings, basically sprouting 'do as I say, not as I do'.

by Anonymousreply 45January 6, 2020 1:01 PM

Faux News is licking his ass. Disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 46January 6, 2020 1:04 PM

Let me guess "Ricky Gervais takes on Hollywood Liberal elite! and wins!:

by Anonymousreply 47January 6, 2020 1:10 PM

Gervais is not a prophet or sage, but an entertainer, paid to perform. The success or failure of his act is dictated by nothing more than personal agenda.

by Anonymousreply 48January 6, 2020 1:17 PM

[quote][R41] I think most British comedians don't fuck with Graham because aside from having an acerbic tongue, he's apparently a scraper and won't think twice about slapping the shit out of someone. I read that on some gossipy UK blog years ago.

They won't fuck with him because his is basically the only talk show on British TV. Fuck him over and it's back to obscurity.

by Anonymousreply 49January 6, 2020 1:18 PM

Liberal elite? Another illusion they like to peddle while they continue their Disney/Satanic takeover.

by Anonymousreply 50January 6, 2020 1:18 PM

You hire Ricky Gervais, you get Ricky Gervais.

by Anonymousreply 51January 6, 2020 1:20 PM

In humor is truth and truth in humor - expect truth isn't always funny. He was just mean and aggressive. Why's it always so hard to find presenters for these shows?

& why do they have to be "funny"? Just get a good presenter and if there are some funny moments, well and good.

by Anonymousreply 52January 6, 2020 1:22 PM

I thought he was very funny. Tom Hanks to me looked amused but somewhat conflicted, or perhaps he had something going on that day and wasn't in a great mood.

by Anonymousreply 53January 6, 2020 1:22 PM

[quote] Tom was upset but I wonder why.

Probably because his entire family was in the front row.

Also, he kept mentioning how he had a really bad cold, so it's probably a nightmare to have to sit through all these not-so-funny jokes, when you're really sick.

[quote] I don’t thinkwhat he said was so bad he probably wasn’t getting the response he wanted which made him have a very bad attitude towards the audience what kind of host says get the fuck out twice ?

[quote] I too wonder if he got in trouble backstage like if he didn’t follow script he would be fired on the spot..he carried around a piece of paper most of the night.

The best was when he came back on stage, after Zellwegger's long and rambling speech.

He literally rolled his eyes, and huffed in disgust.

He was pissed that she was taking so long, especially after a very long show and a very long night.

Once again, he said something like "Just one more, just one more, and we can get the fuck out of here."

Gervais really seems over it.

by Anonymousreply 54January 6, 2020 1:23 PM

I don't always love Gervais, but I think his visibly disgusted presence and refusal to lick ass is exactly what these awards shows need.

by Anonymousreply 55January 6, 2020 1:34 PM

Didn't watch the show but apparently Jonathan Pryce wasn't impressed by some of the jokes. Probably did like his film The Two Popes being referred to a pedo film.

by Anonymousreply 56January 6, 2020 1:38 PM

Sorry, R34, I totally disagree with you. I'm about as progressive as they come and I'm a environmentalist.

I haven't used single use plastic in over a year, I converted my home heating system to a renewable energy source, I buy as many local groceries as I can and so on. I'm making an effort, not just talking about it, and plan to reduce my carbon footprint even more in the future.

I am sick and tired of hearing celebrities talk about climate change when the vast majority of them do nothing to reduce their footprint. Half of them only talk about it because it's become sexy and that makes them hypocrites aside from a rare few like Ed Begley Jr.

by Anonymousreply 57January 6, 2020 1:38 PM

I'm sorry, I fucking love him. You have to admit it takes balls to say that kind of stuff to a room of Hollywood's most powerful. So they were uncomfortable? Good. It's about time they be confronted with hard truths. It sucks that the person who had to say it happened to be the drunken British version of Adam Sandler, but so be it. The audience hated it because he revealed them for what they are: spoiled, faux woke, rich hypocrites.

by Anonymousreply 58January 6, 2020 1:48 PM

To me this just goes to show the hypocrisy of Hollywood. They'll cancel and Tweet against whoever it's hot to rag on at the time, but they're quiet as a mouse when themselves and their friends get placed in the hot seat and called out for their fucked up issues.

by Anonymousreply 59January 6, 2020 1:50 PM

I can't stand Busy and her pal Michelle Williams and I am not buying woke Williams

by Anonymousreply 60January 6, 2020 1:53 PM

R28 ITA...just adore Ricky Gervais, he had the balls to say what the public is thinking. Thank you Golden Globes for giving him a platform to say it. Can't think of enough good words about how much I enjoyed Ricky Gervais, he was the star of the show.

by Anonymousreply 61January 6, 2020 1:56 PM

I don't like Ricky Gervais but he did hit the mark for me. He reminded me that there are very few celebrities I actually like. Most of them are hypocrites, liars, manipulative and narcissistic, people who live in their protective bubbles of wealth and nepotism and have the nerve to pontificate to us about how we should live. Republicans 2.0. I don't expect anyone to be perfect but these people are last folks we should listen to about anything.

by Anonymousreply 62January 6, 2020 2:07 PM

R57, and so you have devoted your spare time after sorting and cleaning your recycling and using the humanure toilet to studying the environmental activism of Hollywood 'stars' who claim to be concerned, because how would you know otherwise?

I see it as everyone, no matter their circumstances, raising awareness, doing what they can and exercising their free speech to direct attention to a situation that concerns us all. I'm not fond of poseurs, but I also don't cross out a group of people with tremendous influence. Would be nice for everyone to shut up, wouldn't it?

What about your assertions of being 'tired' of celebrities being environmental hypocrites do I not believe? All of it. You paint a nice picture of your environmental palace, but who are you trying to convince? It all sounds like it's coming from some part of your woke egocentric, consciousness raising bullshit where you get to be holier than thou.

We, every living thing on this planet, could use all the help we can get. Yes, people like Leo DiHipocrite are making asses of themselves, promising to help environmental organizations on the ground and then pulling support to open up a new non-profit and suck up for publicity to Greta. He's an aging has-been trying to stay relevant. Many of them know their whole careers rest on it. He has talent and will survive, but has always very good at the publicity machine.

I'll still take a Leo, every damn time, over some ass kissing, fire sale flag waving Republican.

by Anonymousreply 63January 6, 2020 2:11 PM

Believe it or not, I was at the Globes (yes, in the room) and there was no giant upset at Gervais. It’s the fifth time he’s hosted. People know what to expect. His opening was funny but he got progressively worse as the night went on. Playing bored gets boring after awhile.

by Anonymousreply 64January 6, 2020 2:21 PM

Doesn’t matter R56. The Two Popes didn’t win anything.

by Anonymousreply 65January 6, 2020 2:24 PM

[quote]Most of them are hypocrites, liars, manipulative and narcissistic

Yeah, but so is Ricky.

by Anonymousreply 66January 6, 2020 2:26 PM

Ricky was a bore. His shtick has completely worn thin. And he committed the gravest son: he wasn't funny.

I don't think anyone cares that this is his last time hosting. Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 67January 6, 2020 2:30 PM

r64, how was the food? Does the booze flow as freely as reported?

by Anonymousreply 68January 6, 2020 2:35 PM

Like Gervais or hate him, he's the only host in a very long time who has made an awards show worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 69January 6, 2020 2:39 PM

[quote] the gravest son

Sounds like the title to another fucking boring Pacino film.

by Anonymousreply 70January 6, 2020 2:41 PM

[quote]he only host in a very long time who has made an awards show worth watching.

Hardly. Last night was the most boring awards show of the year. Gervais couldn't invigorate it no matter how much shade he threw.

by Anonymousreply 71January 6, 2020 2:42 PM

What an asshole. He comes to Hollywood, totally selling out, to make a fortune. Now he's either made enough money to retire at the level he wants, or he has watched his career prospects dry up, so I guess it's time to regain that "irascible reputation." Creep, even if everything he said was a million percent true.

by Anonymousreply 72January 6, 2020 2:46 PM

Regarding all those triggered by me referring to their use of a right wing talking point to bash people with opinions: The message has nothing to do with the messenger. Climate change affects all of us, and resorting to ad hominem attacks does not change that fact. You recycling your plastics is not going to solve it. It requires giant systemic change, the kind that governments can make.

by Anonymousreply 73January 6, 2020 2:48 PM

Award shows are like car wrecks. I don't look to be entertained by hosts and production numbers and "bits".

Makeup, clothes, attitude, who's there and who isn't, and some interest in the game of Show Biz. Learning what's up for awards and who wins them.

I think it's bizarre GG mostly ignores network tv.

by Anonymousreply 74January 6, 2020 2:52 PM

His monologue started off well and I was laughing my ass off, but as it went on, he seemed more bitter and angry than funny. It was like he was on his period and his hormones were making him all erratic and crazy. And I say this as a (not straight) woman.

Something was off. Hemust have had his wrist slapped because he came back out and was grouchy but mostly muzzled. Maybe he wants to return and they told him this hits last time, so he was like, "Fuck it".

Tom Hanks...let's not. SNOOZEFEST.

by Anonymousreply 75January 6, 2020 2:52 PM

Most of the jokes in that monologue were incredibly juvenile: I mean, making fun out of Martin Scorsese's height and Judy Dench licking her feline pussy?! He was much funnier in the previous years.

by Anonymousreply 76January 6, 2020 2:53 PM

He's not wrong, though.

by Anonymousreply 77January 6, 2020 2:55 PM

This is why I enjoy the Golden Globes more than the Oscars. Ricky was great!

by Anonymousreply 78January 6, 2020 2:58 PM

R68, the food was good actually. You had to be there early to eat it. The mushroom scallops, vegetables and rice were actually delicious. They have mini sandwiches and desserts which stayed on the table after that. Multiple big bottles of champagne were on every table and guests could go to the bar to get drinks all night long.

When I saw Ellen was being given a special honor, it dawned on me that she may have been the impetus for the all vegetarian meal. She is known to be quiet strict in her support of vegetarian/vegan-ism.

by Anonymousreply 79January 6, 2020 3:05 PM

The “people” attacking Gervais over and over is mostly the same person on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 80January 6, 2020 3:15 PM

[quote]but as it went on, he seemed more bitter and angry than funny

Probably pissed that he has to host a show where people are getting noms and awards that he himself will never have.

by Anonymousreply 81January 6, 2020 3:19 PM

He was angry and unfunny. Who wants to see that? It threw off the dynamic for the whole ceremony.

He really went over the line when he ended the show by barking, "Get out of here! Fuck off!"

by Anonymousreply 82January 6, 2020 3:28 PM

Nobody has mentioned Gervais's parting words, which I would have missed had I not had on the closed captions.

With the music playing him out, he asked people to donate to Australia's wildfire relief, then said to the departing celebs,

"Get drunk. Take your drugs" as the camera backed away and the credits rolled.

Actors in Hollywood are trash people. Most are psychologically damaged narcissists seeking validation. Ricky calling them on their shit was hilarious!! I laughed out loud several times while watching. Yes, admittedly I love movies and I love classic Hollywood, but I also love to point out the actors’ sanctimonious, hypocritical ways.

by Anonymousreply 84January 6, 2020 3:31 PM

[quote]Most are psychologically damaged narcissists seeking validation.

Aren't we all, toots?

by Anonymousreply 85January 6, 2020 3:39 PM

If he hosts next year I'll watch, that was great!

by Anonymousreply 86January 6, 2020 3:49 PM

Ships parting words were ‘fuck off’...

by Anonymousreply 87January 6, 2020 3:50 PM

I want to know what Joaquin Phoenix bleeped.

by Anonymousreply 88January 6, 2020 3:53 PM

If he hates Hollywood.....why doesn't he quit showbiz and get a real job?

Bet the people pretending to love him are Republicans who bitch about "Hollyweird" (while watching movies and tv shows 24/7)

by Anonymousreply 89January 6, 2020 3:53 PM

R89 is triggered.

by Anonymousreply 90January 6, 2020 3:54 PM

Ricky has a real job. He was on tour last year with his stand up act. He is funny.

I thought he was very funny. Esp the part where he told them "you're in no position to lecture, you know nothing about real life etc" He was doing them a favor really.

I don’t think Gervais hates Hollywood. It’s amusing how people dissect every word he says, when his only goal is to be funny.

His humor has always been inappropriate and abrasive. That’s his style. He probably didn’t remember half of the jokes he told once he got drunk and wasted at the after party with his Hollywood friends.

by Anonymousreply 92January 6, 2020 4:13 PM

Not trying to defend all of them but many actors were once struggling to get by before their big break and arent a case of nepotism. They obviously arent in touch now but they used to know everyday struggles.

by Anonymousreply 93January 6, 2020 4:13 PM

R63, Leo still deserves to be called out over his hypocrisy. It is possible to hate Republicans and make fun of celebrities and their hypocrisy, it's not like they're infallible.

by Anonymousreply 94January 6, 2020 4:14 PM

r94, freepers like you should be called out for preaching "family values" while supporting the pussybgrabber

by Anonymousreply 95January 6, 2020 4:17 PM

Oh, really, R95? I'm a freeper and you think I support Trump just because I don't care for hypocritical celebrities? Some people are really making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and make a difference, Leo does not, and he deserves to be criticized for that.

by Anonymousreply 96January 6, 2020 4:22 PM

Nothing particularly against Tom Hanks, but why is he such a paragon of all that is right and good, so revered and worshipped? He’s a wealthy playactor, who has pretended to be a number of appealing characters.

by Anonymousreply 97January 6, 2020 4:27 PM

r96, the only people bitching at him are freepers.

by Anonymousreply 98January 6, 2020 4:28 PM

The bit about actors not having the education of Greta T was so spot on.

BF and I were talking about just that before the show, how so many of these actors have such a limited understanding of the causes they are espousing--even if they are good causes--that they make horrible spokespeople for them because their logic is so off.

And then an hour later Patricia Arquette gets up on stage....

by Anonymousreply 99January 6, 2020 4:29 PM

R97 - Tom is revered the world over because he’s the only A-list actor never involved in a scandal. It’s damn near impossible to be in Hollywood for 40+ years with no lapses in judgment.

by Anonymousreply 100January 6, 2020 4:30 PM

I wonder what happened to spark this tirade during a hosting gig. He looks like he's drunk or on drugs.

That's some pretty scorched earth type of stuff.

Now, what will impress me is if he doesn't come back with a non-apology apology for what he said and if he stands by what he said and doesn't knuckle under.

by Anonymousreply 101January 6, 2020 4:30 PM

Calling out celebrities for private jets irritates the fuck out of me. Mostly because I want to fly private jet but also even if every celebrity stopped flying that way it's not really making a dent.

If we could get them and everyone else to stop drinking out of plastic bottles and decrease the use of plastic in general, NOW you're getting somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 102January 6, 2020 4:31 PM

r96 Leo devotes a lot of time and money toward oceans and wildlife preservation, that's his charity of choice.

by Anonymousreply 103January 6, 2020 4:33 PM

Joaquin Phoenix crying about private jets and the environment while he is with Rooney Mara who comes from a family of billionaires with a fleet of private jets is exactly the hypocrisy Ricky Gervais railed about.

by Anonymousreply 104January 6, 2020 4:37 PM

r96 he does all of that while polluting the air in his private jets and spending time on his friend's gas guzzling yachts. Listen, there are first class flight all over the world that other celebs take, why can't Leo? It's shameful to have a glaring alternative to an environmentally harmful activity, but deciding that you'd rather continue polluting the air. Then during an acceptance speech for fucking movie, that had little to do with the climate, he tries to lecture and implore everyone else to help save the planet. Leo can fuck right off with his do as I say, not as I do b.s.

by Anonymousreply 105January 6, 2020 4:39 PM

"if isis had a streaming service, you'd call your agent" LOL!!!

by Anonymousreply 106January 6, 2020 4:47 PM

"Then during an acceptance speech for fucking movie, that had little to do with the climate, he tries to lecture and implore everyone else to help save the planet."

But it's okay for has-been actors like Scott Baio to lecture people about voting for Trump, right?

by Anonymousreply 107January 6, 2020 4:48 PM

OK, I missed it, as I gave up on almost all awards shows some years back.

I hope the monologue makes it onto Youtube.

As to Tom Hanks - that faux "Who Me?" shit of his is annoying. Some years back at another awards show, perhaps the GG, they were giving an award to Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. As the couple made their way through the tables toward the presenter, Hanks, who was sitting closer to the stage, jumped up, drew Ruby Dee's arm through his and "escorted" her up to the stage. Leaving her husband to trail behind.

And leaving Hanks on the stage while their award was being given and their speeches being made.

Hanks is a self important, self centered, jerk who interjected himself into that moment.

If he was embarrassed last night, I'm sorry I missed it.

by Anonymousreply 108January 6, 2020 4:51 PM

He was great. Amazing.

by Anonymousreply 109January 6, 2020 4:52 PM

r107 I think it's fine to use your speech to talk about climate change, but it's not fine when you only fly on private jets knowing the harm it causes the planet. Right message, wrong messenger.

by Anonymousreply 110January 6, 2020 4:52 PM

r110, everyone does things that harm the planet. Using your logic, no one should speak out.

by Anonymousreply 111January 6, 2020 4:55 PM

I've watched movie awards shows my whole life and something about last night I just found stomach churning. Maybe it's my age or the tone set by Gervais but there were very few people on last night that didn't make we want to smack them.

Even Tom, I'm a professional good guy, grossed me out with his I'm contagious but I wouldn't miss out on a few minutes in the spotlight even if it means dozens of other people get sick.

I thought Momoa was trash for wearing a tank under his jacket but then I saw Kerry Washington auditioning to host the Adult Video Awards and thought maybe Momoa isn't all that trashy.

Selma and Patricia Araquette kept the "objectify me but don't disrespect me" hypocrisy going.

Only the Brits as usual showed any class.

Joaquin, Renee and Michelle seemed like patients out on a day pass from the psyche ward. Sorry, they are such traumatized, tortured artists, but stay home if you can't "act" like a functional adult for a two-minute speech.

by Anonymousreply 112January 6, 2020 5:19 PM

The idea that we can do anything to stop the self-made mass extinction events coming our way is so stupid. Modern everyday human life does not have a sustainable blueprint. In order to stop climate change we would have to all go back to living like cavemen.

by Anonymousreply 113January 6, 2020 5:20 PM

Tom Hanks seems like a real sicko to me. It's always the nice and perfect ones that are the most disturbed and have the most grotesque skeletons in their closet. My bet's on rapist or kiddie-diddler.

by Anonymousreply 114January 6, 2020 5:22 PM

R112 - I like your observations. I absolutely agree that Kerry Washington looked like a cheap whore working The Bunny Ranch. She was the worst I’ve ever seen her.

by Anonymousreply 115January 6, 2020 5:23 PM

R115, I don't follow her career but I only know she was in that TV show on abc and it's probably no longer on. She's probably desperate for work...she was showcasing her body yesterday for producers and directors....her saggy tits that nobody wanted to see.

by Anonymousreply 116January 6, 2020 5:26 PM

R113 please share where you obtained your PhD and acquired your vast knowledge?

There's a vast gulf between making significant changes to lessen the impact of climate change and returning society to caveman status.

But you knew that.

by Anonymousreply 117January 6, 2020 5:29 PM

R100 he and his wife have a bad rep for ripping off actors over royalties and payments. Andrea Martin hates them because she got paid peanuts for being in MBFGW with a promise of back end points but by the time they were done cooking the books they claimed the movie lost money.

by Anonymousreply 118January 6, 2020 5:32 PM

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the planet is dying. There are too many people consuming too much! No point in having kids. the future is bleak.

by Anonymousreply 119January 6, 2020 5:32 PM

R116 she has worked since her show. Her Netflix movie American Son came out a few months ago and she just finished filming “Little Fires Everywhere” with Reese Witherspoon

by Anonymousreply 120January 6, 2020 5:32 PM

R119 your lithium prescription needs refilling.

by Anonymousreply 121January 6, 2020 5:33 PM

Who cares if the planet is dying!!!! I’m so sick of people thinking we can have a measurable effect on global science.

by Anonymousreply 122January 6, 2020 5:35 PM

[quote] even if every celebrity stopped flying that way it's not really making a dent.

Most of what celebrity elites bitch about won’t make a dent either. That’s why they are hypocrites and need to be loudly denounced. Hurrah for Gervais speaking truth to power.

by Anonymousreply 123January 6, 2020 5:37 PM

That smack on Tim Cook and Sacha's on Zuckerberg made my night.

by Anonymousreply 124January 6, 2020 5:39 PM

Humans are such entitled narcissists to think they're going to have even the slightest effect on global warming. It seems like everybody who talks about it has some sort of weird hero complex and sees themselves as the next Jesus for recycling their plastic bottle of sprite instead of tossing it in the garbage. The truth is the effect is too far gone now and driving a Prius ain't gonna do the slightest thing to stop the holes in the ozone layer from expanding. If you think you're Superman and you're going to save the planet by getting your neighborhood to start composting you're a delusional, self centered moron.

by Anonymousreply 125January 6, 2020 5:40 PM

There might be an effect if we drastically slash emissions in China and India, but Hollywood fat cats aren’t campaigning to do that.

by Anonymousreply 126January 6, 2020 5:47 PM

Ineffective do-gooders really are the problem and where I focus my contempt and scorn.

by Anonymousreply 127January 6, 2020 5:50 PM

R125, what’s your plan?

by Anonymousreply 128January 6, 2020 5:52 PM

R112 is an idiot, implying women shouldn't be respected if they dress a certain way. You sound like a Republican schoolmarm

by Anonymousreply 129January 6, 2020 5:53 PM

You're an idiot, R95. R94 is correct. People like Leo are fucking asshole hypocrites. I'm not expecting him to ride a bike to Europe, but he uses his private jet to go "party." He would take a commercial flight if he genuinely cared about the environment. He could not be more the stereotype of a limousine liberal.

I didn't watch the show, did Gervais at least go after Trump/conservatives at all or did he exclusively go after liberals? If he only went after liberals, then he's a typical, middle-aged, wealthy, white guy which makes the praise less worthy.

by Anonymousreply 130January 6, 2020 5:55 PM

We don't respect men who dress "a certain way". Why should women think it's appropriate to show up to professional functions dressed like that.

by Anonymousreply 131January 6, 2020 5:56 PM

Tr*nsph*b** is not a real prejudice, just an anti-gay slur of false equivalence

by Anonymousreply 132January 6, 2020 6:01 PM

R131 is a moron. How is it inappropriate to wear an evening gown to a formal event? Stop being a prissy schoolmarm

by Anonymousreply 133January 6, 2020 6:01 PM

R133, it really doesn't make sense that Arquette literally puts her giant tits out there and expects no one to look and objectify them. She's an older woman now and she won't admit it to herself that she still craves male attention which is waning with age. You don't wear a dress like that because you're looking to hide in the corner and have no one notice.

If a guy had his ballsack out, we'd be looking, too.

by Anonymousreply 134January 6, 2020 6:02 PM

I thought Gervais was funny. The Judi Dench joke is the kind of thing my ptr and I say all the time.

by Anonymousreply 135January 6, 2020 6:04 PM

A schoolmarm is at least consistent. She doesn't present herself as a talentless piece of meat who can only get work using her beauty. Then screech because she gets treated as a talentless, opportunist, piece of meat.

by Anonymousreply 136January 6, 2020 6:05 PM

R116, Kerry Washington was paid 1.1 million PER episode on the Hulu project with Witherspoon. She’s one of the highest paid tv actresses in Hollywood at the moment. She’s not hurting for cash...Why she wore that stripper dress is beyond me...

I see the right wing propagandists have found the thread.

Them: Global warming is fake!

Us: No, it's real, because science

Them: Okay it's real, but it's all natural processes! The ice ages and such!

Us: No, the climate change we are experiencing is a direct result of the population and industry pollution increasing exponentially over the past hundred years

Them: Okay it's real and we caused it, but it's stupid to think we can have any impact on it to fix it!

Us: Actually we can, it will just take a significant effort on the part of the world's major governments

Them: Okay it's real and man-made and we might have been able to stop it at some point, but it's too late now! It's already happening and is unstoppable forever!!!!

Us: ...

I don't understand famous people who give a shit what trolls think. Trolls are nobody. Literal losers waiting for you to tweet so they can comment from behind a screen.

Lady, you're rich, famous and popular. Why do you care what someone with NOTHING going on thinks?

by Anonymousreply 142January 6, 2020 6:16 PM

My favorite comment from that is "No, don't go, we need to drop you on Iran"

by Anonymousreply 143January 6, 2020 6:19 PM

R107, I don't think the issue is with celebrities having a view in politics (No liberal is telling those asshole conservative celebs they're not entitled to an opinion, but conservative assholes sure as hell are always telling liberal celebs they're not allowed to speak). The problem for liberals like me is when the hypocrisy is so glaring with liberal celebrities that it's easy to mock. I mean we already see the insane level of hypocrisy from conservatives, I don't want to be assholes like them.

As I said in an earlier post: Leo looks bad lecturing on the environment when he's using a private jet, especially for nonsense like partying. He isn't even willing to make the "sacrifice" of commercial flying, so why take him seriously on his message when it rings so hollow in his own behavior?

by Anonymousreply 144January 6, 2020 6:24 PM

I always enjoyed him but I forgot to watch his opening.

by Anonymousreply 145January 6, 2020 6:24 PM

interesting that he complained about the actors/actresses using the platform for their agendas when he did exactly the same thing

by Anonymousreply 146January 6, 2020 6:29 PM

R144 you seem obsessed with Leo.

by Anonymousreply 147January 6, 2020 6:43 PM

R147, clearly. I mean a grand total of TWO posts on him is obsession on my part rather than the fact that he is one of the better known celebrity "environmentalists" and I was merely using him as an example as I saw someone mention his use of flying private to Australia for NYE.

How are you this ridiculous?

by Anonymousreply 148January 6, 2020 6:55 PM

I hope Lizzie chokes on a chicken bone. The probability is high since she must consume dozens of dried chickens a day to keep that blubber jiggling.

by Anonymousreply 149January 6, 2020 6:56 PM

Nobody mentions Jonathan Pryce, who was throwing even dirtier looks than Hanks all night, and not just at Gervais (who was AWESOME). Good. He's always been a pompous blowhard.

by Anonymousreply 150January 6, 2020 7:07 PM

He is a Brit what did you expect? I found him entertaining. However, I don’t think he is looking to do a repeat performance next year.

by Anonymousreply 151January 6, 2020 7:11 PM

WTF are you blathering about r138? There are no climate change deniers here. Just people calling out hypocritical celebs who lecture everybody about the environment when they use more resources in one week than most people use all year.

Tranny Twitter truculent today over the fact that some people laughed at the jokes WHEN RICKY GERVAIS IS LITERALLY MURDERING TRANS PEOPLE.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 153January 6, 2020 7:28 PM

I thought Ricky was pitiful last night. From the start, he was not firing all cylinders. It was like he walked onstage knowing that his time has come and gone already, and no one was interested in him anymore, and that proved to be true.

Hollywood's full of trash people? So is the midwestern US and Washington DC, so what? Ricky was the trashiest one up there, and for once his celebrated wit didn't conquer all. The audience clearly hated him and he knew it. I think the president of the HFPA was being serious when he said "Ricky, can we get it in writing that you won't come back?"

by Anonymousreply 154January 6, 2020 7:32 PM

[quote]Nobody mentions Jonathan Pryce

Nobody should. He was one of the "jump the shark" moments for GoT.

by Anonymousreply 155January 6, 2020 7:50 PM

I don’t even remember him in GoT.

r154 I think you might have misread -- looking like he didn't want to be there and couldn't be bothered to put in real effort was a big part of the play. Honestly I think he might have written some of those jokes on the ride there, it was a deliberately low-effort showing to demonstrate disrespect. He meant it that he doesn't care, what are they going to do to him? Worst case scenario, he moves back to Britain, where he'll be treated as a hero for slagging off Hollywood.

'They're only jokes and we'll all be dead soon' is a woeful defensive cop-out. Meaning he wants kudos for going in hard, but doesn't want flak when the satire doesn't land.

The Judi Dench joke was just pathetic, like some tragic old drunk in a bar. Perhaps he should have tried a line about her going blind, for extra 'edge.' 'Only jokes'? Not even close.

by Anonymousreply 161January 6, 2020 8:06 PM

I always felt Stephen Merchant was way funnier as a comedian.

Ricky was great in "The Office." Nothing else he has done has made me laugh as much. Extras was OK, not great. The podcast he did with Merchant and Pilkington was great, but because Karl was such a goldmine.

His stand-ups for HBO were mediocre.

by Anonymousreply 162January 6, 2020 8:11 PM

R2 Trevor Noah? He's one of the unfunniest "comics" ever. Adam Sandler kind of bad

by Anonymousreply 163January 6, 2020 8:14 PM

R163 - OMG how can you think Trevor Noah is anything but spectacularly brilliant and hilarious? He’s the best thing on network TV. Please give him another chance - you’re missing out!

by Anonymousreply 164January 6, 2020 8:18 PM

I don’t think this is the last time he hosted GG.

by Anonymousreply 165January 6, 2020 8:19 PM

I was done as soon as he started defending Kevin Hart. Fuck both of them.

Also, the conservatives think of Ricky as their hero now, so he is definitely uncool now.

by Anonymousreply 166January 6, 2020 8:20 PM

Ricky is one of those oh so un-pc Atheist turds. He's just so rebellious! It's fine calling out "liberal elites," but his lack of consistency in not doing the same to the right-wing as Boris Johnson was just elected, says it all about his lameness.

by Anonymousreply 167January 6, 2020 9:09 PM

Ricky Gervais makes strange bedfellows. You have the conservatives who enjoy his blasting of liberal celebs, but also those people who think that type of bashing is warranted because the celebs are not woke enough. I'm not surprised that no one has mentioned his dig at the memorial segment being too white. There is no way you could interpret that as being anything other than biting sarcasm, but for the most part it goes down easy because everyone thinks that he is talking about anyone else but them.

by Anonymousreply 168January 6, 2020 9:19 PM

Judy Dench loves to binge on her own minge. MMMMMMM. Hot.

by Anonymousreply 169January 6, 2020 9:19 PM

Ricky was funny. The funny parts more than made up for the jokes that didn't land. As far as the poster upthread who claimed he got worse, I just noticed that he pretty much disappeared after the opening monologue. This isn't the old days where you had people like Billy Crystal or Hugh Jackman interject songs and vignettes throughout the show. It was opening monologue, then snide introduction every half hour or so.

by Anonymousreply 170January 6, 2020 9:21 PM

The job of the host nowadays is to create a viral moment or two. Nothing else to it really. Ricky did just that with limited time.

by Anonymousreply 171January 6, 2020 9:23 PM

R157

Anderson has been out as bi for years.

by Anonymousreply 172January 6, 2020 9:24 PM

Love him for two reasons 1) he goes after Jessica Yaniv and 2) he's a fan of Gomorrah. Also the British Office and Extras were amazing. Tom Hanks has NEVER done anything good.

by Anonymousreply 173January 6, 2020 9:32 PM

Tom Hanks speech started off well and then just got increasingly bizarre. Glad he had the good sense to stop before he got too cringey.

by Anonymousreply 174January 6, 2020 9:35 PM

I know what you mean r112 and I think that having Ricky (a Brit) and then Olivia Colman (another Brit) get her award, Phoebe Waller Bridge. . . pointed up what is sour about the whole thing.

They are so different from Americans and the difference is remarkable. That room was full of clueless wealthy, self satisfied Americans, even the "woke" ones, and it made me embarrassed. The Brits know exactly what that room is all about and they come in with wit and class, accept their awards, and go back home where they don't take themselves as seriously and where they have some innate human dignity.

by Anonymousreply 175January 6, 2020 9:35 PM

r116 Kerry a spent a while on Broadway after her ABC show ended. Then made the movie version of it that just came out on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 178January 6, 2020 9:45 PM

R184 A lot of American actors are basically white trash while the Brits often have middle/upper class background.

by Anonymousreply 189January 6, 2020 10:14 PM

Hollywood as we have known it in its death throes. End of an era, and on some level, they all know it. Party's ending, or at least morphing into something very different. Gervais was right -- they're going to be overtaken by streaming services and other internet-based outlets. Movie stars are passe and becoming targets of general derision, so that Gervais was just right. He was the perfect host for this moment in Hollywood. It's been fun and interesting and I'll carry fond memories of the films and stars and glamour I grew up with in the 80s and 90s, but it has to end, and the end of cultural edifices of that scale is often rather undignified and pathetic, I suspect opera and other artforms have died out in much the same way, under the weight of a bunch of decadent mediocre drunks.

by Anonymousreply 190January 6, 2020 10:15 PM

Good. The movies suck anyway. Get some real risk takers with good writing track records in there.

Series are better than movies anyway. People want more longevity with a world.

by Anonymousreply 191January 6, 2020 10:19 PM

Doesn't Lauren Graham have a major Cunt reputation? I doubt Gervais was too worried about losing her.

by Anonymousreply 192January 6, 2020 10:20 PM

Cartoons and superhero nonsense are the only things that really make money for studios. They don't need to pay actors as much anymore. No one is running to a movie because Margot Robbie is in it.

It's still Hollywood whether it's streaming or projected in a theater and the demand for content has never been greater.

So Hollywood and the narcissistic "trash" are not going anywhere. In fact that may be the problem.

Maybe Hollywood has lost it's sense of gratitude because like Trump they can "shoot someone on 5th avenue" and their cult will still take them back after a mea culpa or worse they want the entertainment of an inspiring comeback story after a scandalous fall.

How RDJ, Wahlberg, Gibson and so many others still have people willing to even talk to them is a kind of tribute to not only the human capacity for forgiveness but our sick willingness to endure repeated unacceptable behavior from those in "our sympathies".

These people have a huge platform. Use it. Can only rednecks in diners and the *president*, a reality show fuckwit, and entertainment-value talking blonde heads on faux news talk about these things?

The moment a hollywood figure speaks out on the side of the right wingers, they are suddenly in full support of the hollywood "elites" using their platform.

by Anonymousreply 205January 7, 2020 1:20 AM

R205, you are correct

by Anonymousreply 206January 7, 2020 1:24 AM

r205, Americans don't want to hear. Celebs do nothing to help anyone in politics. It always backfires. Unless your picture has to do with the subject at hand, stay on fucking topic.

by Anonymousreply 207January 7, 2020 1:45 AM

Hollywood celebrities are like Marie Antoinette dressed a shepherdess tending her perfumed sheep. They literally have no idea what real life is like. Their work and their life is a fantasy. They dabble in politics as hobby to escape their boredom, and they parrot lines they have heard at their cocktail parties, while knowing nothing about science, real economics or politics.

by Anonymousreply 208January 7, 2020 1:58 AM

Ricky wasn’t trying to be funny And didn’t even bother to entertain guests. He deliberately pissed anyone off that night. He seemed unhappy and it showed.

by Anonymousreply 209January 7, 2020 2:02 AM

I don't get this notion that celebs shouldn't have opinions. They are part of the population like anyone else. And some actually do have educations.

by Anonymousreply 210January 7, 2020 2:08 AM

[R134], cleavage isn't equivalent to showing your genitals. Try again. And you can find people attractive without objectifying them. You sound like a typical dumb Republican.

TITS are a sexual thing whether you like it or not. TITS are put on display to be sexualized. Did she have a baby hanging off them suckling? No. She had them out there for the purpose of people looking or proving some point that missed. She can dress however she wants. but let's cut the shit where we're supposed to pretend it's in any way classy or about "women's rights."

And you're a fool if you think saying that makes me a Republican. I'm sick of this shit where we deny the obvious. I may go hard on my own, that doesn't mean I'm a fucking Republican for fuck sake.

by Anonymousreply 214January 7, 2020 2:16 AM

R211, showing off cleavage is not the same thing as going completely topless or waving your dick around, there is something really wrong with you if you believe that

Attacking feminists certainly makes you look like a freeper.

by Anonymousreply 215January 7, 2020 2:17 AM

R215, that wasn't mere cleavage. Stop it. Cleavage is more subtle. You know a dress like that is just tacky if you think you're sending some message. by Anonymousreply 216January 7, 2020 2:21 AM

When there is more tit exposed than covered it is not cleavage. It is inappropriately covered tits. Cleavage happens between 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock on the left tit and 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock on the right tit. If there are tits from one armpit to the other, it is tits not cleavage. And exposing your tits on national TV in a room with at least one minor child present makes you indecent.

Considering how so many celebrities parrot the line about white privileged, they are the most privileged people in the world. They get paid anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions for a few months work. The only real disadvantage is they are much more scrutinized by the ordinary public, but even that becomes less of a problem if they only learn to associate with other people like them in insulated communities.

by Anonymousreply 222January 7, 2020 2:50 AM

Ricky's monologue was brilliant. He's the best thing about that show and NBC knows it so he will probably be back.

I paid no attention to what Patricia said because I was too mortified expecting her tits to pop put any second.

Jacqueline Bisset was a total spaz when she accepted her award a few years ago. It's funny to think that people are still fooled by a British accent. It doesn't necessarily denote class. It was a very funny monologue, in the tradition of the Friars' Club Roasts, except here he was taking on the whole room and the film industry. It was a breath of fresh air.

The audience was filled with the 1%, people with enormous privilege. The least they can do is have a sense of humor about themselves.

by Anonymousreply 232January 7, 2020 3:29 AM

You just have to report the news these days and it's ridiculous enough to laugh at. Of course, it's also terrifying, but I'd prefer to laugh.

I think they meant Selma's are bought. There are pictures of her when she was younger and you can tell by looking at them at the top they are fake. So are Sarandon's. There was a pic in a tabloid like 20 years ago provided by someone who went to HS and college with her and they said everyone at school laughed that her breasts grew to gigantic proportions when she got to HW. She was really flat, Selma wasnt as flat. Christina Hendricks are fake too, there have been earlier pics of her posted. As a female I have noticed that women with fake boobs have a tendency to want to really show them off.

His comments made fun of liberals because he was in a room full of liberals. If conservatives dominated the movie industry, that's who he'd have made fun of. It's not that deep.

by Anonymousreply 306January 7, 2020 7:39 PM

[quote] Also, [Tom Hanks] kept mentioning how he had a really bad cold, so it's probably a nightmare to have to sit through all these not-so-funny jokes, when you're really sick.

IMO, Hanks wanted an excuse to be either drunk and/or pilled-up ("I'm on codeine cough syrup").

It makes sense that Fox News loves what Gervais did at the Golden Globes. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend.) That's just how it goes.

I love what Gervais did. Only a non-American could have done that. These fuckers are delusional about their social value.

I hate to present a "both sides" argument, but I think on both sides a great deal of people lack self awareness.

Thoughts and prayers, "owning the Libs", SJWs, cis (comfortable in your own skin) used as a negative term, MAGA!, triggered, safe space, etc.

Everything has turned into a basic Reality TV brawl with buzzwords and social media memes where one group goes after another group in some petty, juvenile way. There are no more sophisticated, well mannered discussions, just bitch fights.

by Anonymousreply 309January 7, 2020 8:27 PM

I thought he was funny as hell. All of it, and truthful as well. Anyone offended by what was essentially a roast is lacking in maturity.

by Anonymousreply 310January 7, 2020 8:29 PM

I love his liberal ass and his response

I want Woody taken me next time but Ricky call him pervert.

by Anonymousreply 312January 7, 2020 9:17 PM

Ricky did mention that Ronan Farrow was coming for "all of them" and that they are all terrified of him. I wonder if he knows something or if he was just spouting off?

by Anonymousreply 313January 7, 2020 9:26 PM

It's called "a joke", r313

by Anonymousreply 314January 7, 2020 9:27 PM

Nobody seems to mention the current events that were going to cast a huge pall over the proceedings regardless of who was hosting. Most people are on edge, and rightfully so.

by Anonymousreply 315January 7, 2020 9:30 PM

Oh Christ r313! The stupidity of your post is stunning

by Anonymousreply 316January 7, 2020 9:38 PM

[quote]Ahem, I used to be the one admired for my big tits.

r272, I think you mean Alexis A. Or something.

by Anonymousreply 317January 7, 2020 11:05 PM

trevor noah is the least funny person on the planet. Even Jack Black, Adam Sandler and Jimmy Fallon look funny next to him. And those three are as funny as testicular cancer.

by Anonymousreply 318January 7, 2020 11:28 PM

Anyone catch the Stella McCartney design house tweet praising Joaquin for saving the planet by recycling his tux? Christ on a pony.

R319 is it made out of fucking cardboard? Looks pretty cheap.

by Anonymousreply 320January 8, 2020 2:16 AM

[quote]Anyone catch the Stella McCartney design house tweet praising Joaquin for saving the planet by recycling his tux? Christ on a pony.

That tweet is hilarious. It's a shame it was posted after the show, Gervais could have worked it into his monologue.

by Anonymousreply 321January 8, 2020 2:19 AM

He’s clearly saving resources by not using any hygiene or grooming products also.

by Anonymousreply 322January 8, 2020 2:19 AM

When Gervais was telling the nominees to skip the politics, thank your agent and fuck off, what do you suppose was going through Patty's mind? Was it "fuck this guy, I'll say what I want" or "gee...what should I do now?"

by Anonymousreply 323January 8, 2020 2:24 AM

Gervais had the perfect opportunity to go after Armie Hammer but didn't.

by Anonymousreply 324January 8, 2020 2:44 AM

[quote] Was it "fuck this guy, I'll say what I want"

Close, but it was more likely “fuck this Limey asshole who isn’t even funny. I’ll say what I want and take my own good time doing it.”

by Anonymousreply 325January 8, 2020 3:03 AM

You know who is loving Gervais' remarks? Republicans. They are all over the internet crowing about how the Hollywood elite finally got theirs and good. Everything he said takes Hollywood (and the Left) down to the gutter. The GG people are insane to keep hiring him. If I were a star, I would not attend if he were the host. To me, he looked fucking miserable the whole night and I didn't think he was funny.

by Anonymousreply 326January 8, 2020 5:59 AM

When it comes to entertainment awards, an Academy Award is a Purple Heart while a Daytime Emmy is a chocolate medal.

Ricky Gervais is a tiresome blowhard.

What he is is an ungracious jerk!

by Anonymousreply 329January 8, 2020 9:08 AM

R328 sure sure, disengenuous poster 🙄

by Anonymousreply 330January 8, 2020 9:09 AM

R318 I never understood why Jon Stewart picked Trevor of all people. He's simply painfully unfunny. I had high hopes and gave his show several chances but he was just unbelievably bad. And smug as well .

by Anonymousreply 331January 8, 2020 9:15 AM

r237 I thought they did show a quick clip of Bosom Buddies in the montage

by Anonymousreply 332January 8, 2020 9:38 AM

They did, r332 r237. And Turner and Hooch, that’s why I assumed he was joking.

by Anonymousreply 333January 8, 2020 1:58 PM

Not sure what’s disingenuous about fact, R330? Perhaps you don’t understand the meaning of the word...

by Anonymousreply 334January 9, 2020 4:49 AM

Oh. My mistake. You're just a dumbass, then, r334.

by Anonymousreply 335January 9, 2020 8:42 AM

Love Ricky. Reminds me of the old roasts they used to do.

by Anonymousreply 336January 9, 2020 1:08 PM

I’m tired of celebrity-bashing: it’s just pandering to the right at this point in any context. You’re not a real liberal if you consider Hollywood activism “phony.” And only deplorables and hicks think so-called “elitism” is a bad thing. Celebrities are your betters; they know what’s best for you. That’s why Gwyneth Paltrow is more qualified to give medical advice than some pill-popping quack. That’s why Taylor Swift has done more for feminism than any suffragist. That’s why Jennifer Aniston and Alyssa Milano have done more for women’s rights than either Gloria Steinem or Betty Friedan. And that’s why Sam Smith, Caitlyn Jenner, and Laverne Cox have earned the right to call themselves women than any of those cis-bitches, especially that dragon-kissing foreigner who sang a few tunes in the 1970s. Being famous gives you the moral authority to tell others how to live their lives. Never challenge the moral authority of str8 white liberals. Especially those with vaginas. Never. HOW DARE YOU!

by Anonymousreply 337January 9, 2020 1:43 PM

[quote] And smug as well

“Smug” is just another deplorable buzzword designed to demean and degrade celebrity activism.

by Anonymousreply 338January 9, 2020 1:47 PM

Interesting how the right and rednecks are all of sudden huge Ricky fans. Even that idiot Ben Shapiro is praising him. All because he jokingly made fun of Hollywood celebs. Would love to see their reaction if they knew his view on homosexuality, women rights, religion, animal rights... I'm sure a lot of them are the same type that attacked him few years ago when he closed the GG ceremony with: thank god for making me an atheist.

by Anonymousreply 339January 9, 2020 4:38 PM

They praised Dave Chappelle also even though he's friend with Obama

by Anonymousreply 340January 9, 2020 4:40 PM

R339 STFU. The last thing we need on DL are xtian evangelicals like you. Atheists give the best head and are the best rimmers.

by Anonymousreply 341January 9, 2020 4:46 PM

[quote]Interesting how the right and rednecks are all of sudden huge Ricky fans.

Where were they when the Ricky who actually is a Republican went to the hoosegow?

by Anonymousreply 342January 9, 2020 4:48 PM

R342 Republican? He's not even American.

by Anonymousreply 343January 9, 2020 5:10 PM

I meant Schroder, not Gervais. Where were so-called conservative Republicans then? Ricky G. is not a Republican that I'm aware of; he's just sick of being lied to. He's no worse than Dave Chappelle. He gets it.

by Anonymousreply 344January 9, 2020 5:47 PM

[quote] Reminds me of the old roasts they used to do

You mean the ones with several unfunny actors who would tell off-color jokes about the "roastee" and the audience would laugh as if they thought it was funny but it never was?

You're right. Ricky's exactly like that.

by Anonymousreply 345January 10, 2020 12:49 PM

[quote]Atheists give the best head

Don't you DAYAH make fun of mah blowjobs, r341!

by Anonymousreply 346January 10, 2020 12:51 PM

R346 that joke is so played out, just like your bombed out asscunt.

by Anonymousreply 347January 10, 2020 2:15 PM

The "liberalism" he attacked is basically no different than a shallow, stupid religion for people who think they hate religion. This explains why they cling and refuse to accept criticism and lash out when they receive it anyway. It isn't really liberalism, it's pseudo-religious groupthink stupidity and hopefully Gervais' monologue is the first of many brutal take-downs. We will not progress until the frauds calling themselves progressives are dealt with.

by Anonymousreply 348January 10, 2020 2:21 PM

Everyone attacking Mr. Gervais is a troll and an antigay bigot.

by Anonymousreply 349January 10, 2020 2:31 PM

Is he really a conservative though?

by Anonymousreply 350January 11, 2020 2:21 AM

[quote] it really doesn't make sense that Arquette literally puts her giant tits out there and expects no one to look and objectify them. She's an older woman now and she won't admit it to herself that she still craves male attention which is waning with age. You don't wear a dress like that because you're looking to hide in the corner and have no one notice.

Now is the perfect time for someone to bring back the MuuMuu.

by Anonymousreply 351January 11, 2020 2:38 AM

I remember on one of those roasts Amy Schumer made a ‘joke’ about an older fat black comedian she said ‘ he is gonna die’ sureenougha few years later he did.

by Anonymousreply 352January 11, 2020 5:33 PM

She probably saw to it, because she had a New Year's Resolution of only telling the truth.

by Anonymousreply 353January 11, 2020 9:24 PM

It's official!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host next year's Golden Globes.

by Anonymousreply 354January 12, 2020 12:10 AM

The wording of this statement makes me nauseous:

“NBC has long been the home to two of the funniest people on the planet – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – and we didn’t want to wait any longer to share the great news that they’ll be hosting the Globes once again,” said Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

“There’s no denying that Tina and Amy’s comedic chemistry is infectious,” said Lorenzo Soria, President of the HFPA. “We can’t wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage.”

“Tina and Amy have provided Golden Globes viewers with some of the most memorable moments the show has ever seen,” said Amy Thurlow, President of dick clark productions. “We’re thrilled to welcome them back in 2021.”

by Anonymousreply 355January 12, 2020 3:36 AM

Gee, they are sure planning way ahead. Never watch the Golden Globes so really don't care who hosts it.

by Anonymousreply 356January 12, 2020 3:49 AM

Thank God it isn't Gervais. I am WAY over him.

by Anonymousreply 357January 12, 2020 4:06 AM

You would think that only three people in Hollywood are capable of hosting a stupid awards show.

Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler.

Fucking idiots. Try someone new, for fuck's sake.

by Anonymousreply 358January 12, 2020 4:08 AM

[quote] Gee, they are sure planning way ahead.

Announcing who is hosting the next Globes is “planning way ahead” to you?

by Anonymousreply 359January 12, 2020 12:35 PM

I like Tina and Amy but I don't watch the Golden Globes but I'll watch the clips if anything really funny or interesting happens.

by Anonymousreply 360January 12, 2020 12:43 PM

They must have shit a brick over Gervais to announce "safe" hosts for a show a year from now.

by Anonymousreply 361January 12, 2020 1:08 PM

Great, another sad whiny "Hollywood Women have it so HARD" themed show like the year before Gervais. Pass. Are they trying to scare us away?

by Anonymousreply 362January 12, 2020 2:41 PM

I'd rather see Tina Yothers and Amy Irving. Unfortunately, they already gave out the awards for 1986.

by Anonymousreply 363January 12, 2020 2:48 PM

Tina Fey has very thin lips.

by Anonymousreply 364January 12, 2020 2:50 PM

And a very pedestrian wit.

by Anonymousreply 365January 12, 2020 2:52 PM

he probably didn't have real beer in the glass

by Anonymousreply 366January 12, 2020 2:54 PM

Poehler hasn't been funny for years, (actually she never was), when female comics hit menopause, they become boring and preachy, it's a shame. Name one that stayed funny after age 45-50 or so, I can think of maybe two.

by Anonymousreply 367January 12, 2020 3:57 PM

[quote] They must have shit a brick over Gervais to announce "safe" hosts for a show a year from now.

Ricky was practically BEGGING them to fire him. Throughout the whole show!

by Anonymousreply 368January 12, 2020 4:14 PM

I used to hate both Poehler and Fey but then I became a huge fan of Parks & Rec. I still hate Tina Fey. She is not and has never been funny in ANY THING she has done. She is as inexplicable as Janet Jackson's nose.

by Anonymousreply 369January 12, 2020 4:22 PM

R118 Andrea Martin has her big nose up Rat Robertson's anti-gay ass so much it is pitiful.

If Tom & wifey have screwed her over financially then good for them.

by Anonymousreply 370January 12, 2020 6:32 PM

[Quote] She is not and has never been funny in ANY THING she has done.
