Who Was Your Favorite Angel From Charlie’s Angels? Who Did You Despise? Why?

I heard Kate Jackson was a bitch on set. She hated Cheryl Ladd. I heard Kate Jackson was the lead character and made more money than the other characters. Farrah left an amazing career due to her husband, Lee Majors, wanting a stay at home wife.

Favorite: Kris Monroe - beauty, brains and body. Least: Kelly Rogers - they tried to make character too sexy.

Drew Barrymore.

by Anonymousreply 1January 4, 2020 9:24 AM

Jaclyn Smith. She was so pretty and a decent enough actress for what the show was.

by Anonymousreply 2January 4, 2020 9:32 AM

Farrah

by Anonymousreply 3January 4, 2020 8:56 PM

Shelley Hack all the way. East coast sophistication.

by Anonymousreply 4January 4, 2020 9:02 PM

Sabrina. I loved how she could prove Fermat's Last Theorem while arguing on the phone with Bosley, applying lip-gloss in the mirror, and engaging in a high-speed car chase.

by Anonymousreply 5January 4, 2020 9:06 PM

Is your least favorite Kelly Garrett or Julie Rogers, OP?

by Anonymousreply 6January 4, 2020 9:06 PM

Shelley Hack as Tiffany Welles dressed by Nolan Miller

by Anonymousreply 7January 4, 2020 9:18 PM

[quote] Favorite: Kris Monroe - beauty, brains and body.

"brains"??

by Anonymousreply 8January 4, 2020 9:21 PM

Seasons 1, 2, and 5 are on Hulu now.

by Anonymousreply 9January 4, 2020 9:29 PM

Sabrina (lez) was my least fave

by Anonymousreply 10January 4, 2020 10:08 PM

Shelley Hack was an underrated Angel. So chic and totally in on the joke. I love her. Sabrina is pretty fantastic, too. Smart and drove that cute orange Pinto.

by Anonymousreply 11January 4, 2020 10:18 PM

Frankly, I loved them all.

I probably hate Tanya just because she signified the show on its last legs, and she kind of gave off a porny vibe.

by Anonymousreply 12January 4, 2020 10:20 PM

And YES!!!! TO the bitch above. I LOVE SHELLEY HACK!!! And she kicked ass in The Stepfather. Such an icy beauty. Loved her.

by Anonymousreply 13January 4, 2020 10:21 PM

1. Kate Jackson

2. Farrah Fawcett

3. Tanya Roberts

4. Jaclyn Smith

5. Cheryl Ladd

6. Shelley Hack

by Anonymousreply 14January 4, 2020 10:21 PM

IMO, Shelley Hack was too flat-chested for the role. There was already Kate Jackson (flat-chested). This was supposed to be a show about woman cops running down the street w/chests bouncing.

However, I recently saw "King of Comedy" for the first time. Surprise, there's Shelley Hack. She was good in the role.

by Anonymousreply 15January 4, 2020 10:51 PM

Shelley deserves her own thread. Posts upon posts of Charlie perfume ads!

by Anonymousreply 16January 4, 2020 10:56 PM

The lesbians all identified with Sabrina Duncan.

by Anonymousreply 17January 4, 2020 10:56 PM

R17 what was with Sabrina’s turtlenecks?

by Anonymousreply 18January 4, 2020 11:23 PM

I was a kid but : Farah Fawcett looked scary and not nice at all. The next one was cuter. There was a super beautiful brunette, I think Sabrina? And another one who was kind of ugly, like a school teacher or a pharmacist. Kate? My mother would usually send us to play outdoors instead of watching garbage so the last I remember from the series was that dramatic line, after an explosion in a building : ' KELLY! she's DEAD!! SABRINA IS DEAD'. Likewise I never knew WHET Alyson McKenzie because she was RAPED, and after the brunette lady confronted the perpetrator with that word' ' after you' ve RAPED Alyson!! '. I was sent outside. Mia was pretty

by Anonymousreply 19January 4, 2020 11:24 PM

TV Series- Kelly Garrett.

First Movie Series - Alex.

New Movie - haven’t seen it.

The character of Allison Mckenzie was written off Peyton Place in 1966, and Charlies Angels premiered a full ten years later in 1976.

Even if you were only six years old when you watched Peyton Place, are you telling us your mother sent you off to play at age 16???

by Anonymousreply 21January 4, 2020 11:37 PM

Because I was raised partly in the south of France and Peyton place was on in the 70's

by Anonymousreply 22January 4, 2020 11:43 PM

Kate/Sabrina was the best angel because she was the only one who took on different personas while working undercover. Jill, Kris, and Kelly just gave themselves a different last name and profession ("Hi, I'm Kelly Garrick, a lady journalist doing a story for Women's Circle Magazine"). But they spoke and acted exactly the same.

by Anonymousreply 23January 4, 2020 11:51 PM

Jaclyn was my favorite maybe because she was the most beautiful but Kate/Sabrina was second because she was the smartest Farrah looked so strange and was such a bad actress back then that she was just there Oh and in case anyone was unaware Cheryl Ladd aka Kris is a right-wing bitch.

by Anonymousreply 24January 5, 2020 12:03 AM

R24 seriously, I had no idea Cheryl Ladd was a right wing bitch.

by Anonymousreply 25January 5, 2020 12:39 AM

R25, you are very right. Believe EVERY SINGLE WORD that's ever printed on datalounge.com. It's the voice of TRUTH.

by Anonymousreply 26January 5, 2020 7:33 AM

I loved them all, but Jaclyn Smith was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 27January 5, 2020 7:41 AM

Farrah Fawcett was cheap and tacky as hell, but Charlie’s Angels showcased her meager talents perfectly. She was by far the liveliest.

I don’t know quite how she did it, as she had a terrible baby voice and was really just a glorified spokesmodel...but she really was the most fun to watch. Maybe because she took it the least seriously?

Her 3 films after she left the show to be a big movie star bombed...so, whatever. Sayonara, sweetheart!

You think there’s Hollywood figures WITHOUT greed?

Why would you single Fawcett out for this?

by Anonymousreply 32January 5, 2020 9:12 AM

Because this poster was EVERYWHERE. Like she was IT. where you around? It was sickening. Tons of TV stars were more beautiful or more talented, or had warmth and some tenderness in them. Even in that cast. Natalie Wood, Jaclyn Smith, are the first that come to mind, but there were TV stars that were likeable and motherly, in a kid's eyes.

by Anonymousreply 33January 5, 2020 9:42 AM

Natalie Wooden died while CA was on tv. Not of the same era.

Farrah was lively during season one. Her guest appearances in subsequent seasons were always quite sullen and telegraphed "I really don't want to be here."

Team Kelly! Kris stinks! Cheryl Ladd was a total cunt to me in the 80’s, so I’m biased.

by Anonymousreply 37January 5, 2020 2:36 PM

Farrah isn’t lively anymore

by Anonymousreply 38January 5, 2020 2:47 PM

Favorite: Sabrina.

Least favorite: Seasons 3-4 Jill (for the reasons stated by r36), Season 5 Kelly (she had turned into a total frau) and Season 4 Kris (for reasons that are well known to her).

by Anonymousreply 39January 5, 2020 3:11 PM

[quote]r36 Farrah was lively during season one. Her guest appearances in subsequent seasons were always quite sullen and telegraphed "I really don't want to be here."

Oh....I hadn't even been counting those.

The return guest slots were indeed more like visits to a parole officer than performances. I only saw the first one, and all the magic was gone. It was like, "Why did we ever think she was so special?"

by Anonymousreply 40January 5, 2020 3:18 PM

R34, Charlie's Angels went off the air in June of 1981. Natalie Wood died in November of that year. I don't see the point of this, but they were definitely around at the same time. Natalie's peak fame, however, was in the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 41January 5, 2020 3:41 PM

Natalie Wood was a good 10 years older than the ladies from CA.

by Anonymousreply 42January 5, 2020 3:51 PM

It's kind of sad (pathetic, really) that Natalie Wood owned a piece of the show, yet couldn't even get herself a guest slot on it.

She was on the way out...

by Anonymousreply 46January 5, 2020 4:03 PM

It annoys me in the later seasons that the Angels didn’t get updated cars.

They’re supposed to be these sophisticated women in expensive clothes, but they’re driving a Pinto with missing trim, a Mustang Cobra that’s dirty, and a Mustang Ghia with a large upholstery tear covered by electrical tape. It’s really bad in season five, and odd. Tv shows usually update the cars when the carmaker redesigns the car, not Charlie’s Angels.

Oddly, Bodley got a new car, a station wagon.

by Anonymousreply 47January 5, 2020 4:13 PM

Jaclyn Smith was my favorite. She was so beautiful. As a kid growing up in the 1970s, we'd always play act at recess whatever our favorite shows were. Whenever we did Charlie's Angels, I was Charlie but more involved in whatever the mystery was. The girls all fought like the devil over who was going to play Kelly. No one fought as much about Jill (then later Chris) and no one wanted to be Sabrina except the tomboy in the class.

by Anonymousreply 48January 5, 2020 4:21 PM

Kelly

Kris

Jill

by Anonymousreply 49January 5, 2020 5:07 PM

not sure why they were afraid to throw the ball into Tiffany's court; they did that with Kris and she was fine.

Maybe they should have made Tiffany Sabrina's cousin or something....?

Loved this show as a kid; it was magical.

by Anonymousreply 50January 5, 2020 5:10 PM

R50, as I recall, the story has always been that Shelley was not good at remembering her lines in the beginning, so they basically gave up on her and split up her lines between Jaclyn and Cheryl. Perhaps this was true and perhaps it wasn't, but I always found it curious given how Hack didn't seem to have an issue delivering perfectly capable performances in other shows (including a short-lived series of her own, "Jack & Mike," post Angels). Maybe she just got better at her craft over time but I also recall the story after her dismissal saying that the producers were disappointed because she hadn't helped rebuild the show's ratings, which started to fade post Kate, so who knows.

by Anonymousreply 51January 5, 2020 6:48 PM

I believe they hired an acting coach for Hack and she refused to go to him. She was also difficult with the wardrobe and hair people too from what I recall hearing.

Tanya Roberts was considered in 1979 as Kate’s replacement but they went with Hack because of the Charlie commercials she was doing at the time.

Why did Kate Jackson hate Cheryl Ladd?

by Anonymousreply 52January 5, 2020 6:51 PM

Kate started hating Cheryl after she pushed this musical number on the show.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 53January 5, 2020 6:59 PM

I always heard too that Kate didn't like Cheryl simply because she replaced Farrah (with whom Kate and Jaclyn were still good friends). If true, that means she probably would've been cold to whomever had stepped into that role.

Going back to Shelley for a moment, I always found it interesting that, despite her minimal role on the show, there are still people who will list her as their favorite angel or, at the very least, thought she was great on the show. Go figure.

by Anonymousreply 54January 5, 2020 7:04 PM

Because she was a bulldagger, and Ladd was having [italic]none of it.

by Anonymousreply 55January 5, 2020 7:34 PM

Ladd was and is a right-wing bitch. Kate hated her for it.

by Anonymousreply 56January 5, 2020 7:53 PM

Costume designer Nolan Miller said Kate Jackson ran very hot + cold. Almost in an unbalanced way. For instance, they really started hating each other at one point during the series (maybe partially because she never wanted to come in for wardrobe fittings) and Jackson suddenly invitated him on a trip to Hawaii over a long weekend. He said, "I don't even want to RALK to you, let alone go on a VACATION with you!"

Kate Jackson was probably the most inately intelligent of the angels. The stupidity of the writing must have begun to grate on her over time, plus the show had been conceived -- at least in her eyes -- as a starring vehicle for herself. (She did initially make twice what Fawcett and Smith were making, $10,000 a week vs. $5,000.) So, what I can imagine is, it wasn't anything Ladd did that rubbed Jackson the wrong way... it was just that she acted like she was literally on the rag half the time.

In this interview, though, it's Shelley Hack who he says was "the bitch of the century."

by Anonymousreply 57January 5, 2020 10:36 PM

^^ oh god, I meant "TALK to you," "not "RALK to you".

Tho I bet he didn't want to "ralk" to her, or anything else, either! At the 10:25 mark here, he says he was ready to leave the show altogether over her being so uncooperative, and the solution was just handing Jackson over to one of the wardrobe girls to handle, so they were kept apart.

We loved tacky. It’s what held her pin-up posters on the wall—at least initially. Millions of young men used our product to nail her to the walls and ceilings, and then would shoot their own ‘glue’ to make her stick.

by Anonymousreply 63January 6, 2020 9:24 AM

She was on some show and a guy told her how much her poster "meant" to him as a teenager and she replied with a weird comment that was basically I'm glad I help you become a heterosexual.

Natalie was in fact a producer of the show and had zero interest in appearing in it. She was a fucking A list Hollywood royalty. Give her a break. She was winning golden globes for more ambitious projects and left the TV series to Mr husband who found a delicious way to give it back to her = ' let her in the water, it will teach her a lesson '. Wether you like her or not, she was the biggest film star of her generation, garnered 3 academy award nominations before hitting 25 years of age and gave legendary performances in classic films, including ' splendor in the grass ' in which she's extraordinary. Enough hate thank you. If grating ugly sexless pathetic miss MGM druggie-loonie is your thing, fine, but leave Natalie alone.

by Anonymousreply 66January 6, 2020 12:05 PM

I never have understood how they didn't fucking make Kate Jackson honor her contract. She was being a total bitch on the show, and they let her go for Shelly Hack? I wished they fucking made her to "guest appearances" like they pressured Farrah to do. Kate was writing a book, but it keeps getting pushed back, I wonder if she will ever finish it. I'd love to hear her views about working on "Charlies Angels" I have a feeling she is mentally ill, Jaclyn and Cheryl have embraced the show, but Kate is basically a fucking recluse. Bitter old closeted lesbian

by Anonymousreply 67January 6, 2020 1:41 PM

Kate also had a good run on Scarecrow and Mrs King but she really wanted to be a serious actress

by Anonymousreply 68January 6, 2020 4:33 PM

Did Cheryl and Jaclyn get along with Shelly and Tanya? During the Farrah Fawcett guest appearances in season 4, everyone seems annoyed that Tiffany is there.

[quote]R69 Did Cheryl and Jaclyn get along with Shelly and Tanya? During the Farrah Fawcett guest appearances in season 4, everyone seems annoyed that Tiffany is there.

Nolan Miller says in the r57 video that pretty quickly after her arrival, no one could stand Hack, personally, and they all wanted her GONE.

by Anonymousreply 70January 6, 2020 7:06 PM

Cheryl had nice things to say about Shelley. And she and Tanya became golfing buddies several years ago.

Jaclyn, on my other hand, doesn’t remember either of them.

That's an interesting question about why didn't the producers force Kate to do guest appearances like Farrah, but I would guess since she was fired from the show (as opposed to Farrah, who quit), that would be the reason. And I don't think they ever said that she was "let go for Shelley Hack," they just fired her and then hired someone else to take her place (and that someone else just happened to be Shelley Hack).

by Anonymousreply 79January 6, 2020 10:34 PM

Wasn’t the issue with Kate that she became disruptive on set after Spelling told her she couldn’t do Kramer vs Kramer?

I believe she got angry during the filming of Marathon Angels (which admittedly is a very badly written episode), had a tantrum and started screaming “THIS IS SHIT! SHIT! SHIT” on set, and that was the last straw?

by Anonymousreply 80January 6, 2020 11:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 92January 7, 2020 5:34 AM

R87 I disagree — you needed superb actors to play off each other to elevate that material, and Hoffman without an equally good partner to play off of...the movie would have been inferior, true TV of the week kind of stuff (which it’s oft accused of anyway).

R93, Kate gave a solid performance in the well-intentioned and dramatic Making Love.

by Anonymousreply 111January 8, 2020 7:50 AM

I think that's from an early stint on some other TV show. The makeup and hair people would just dip guest stars in whatever the current style was, because unknown actors had no established image of their own yet.

by Anonymousreply 112January 8, 2020 8:05 AM

She looks more natural in this early modeling shot for Max Factor.

Farah) I am too good for this show, I will be a super duper star

Kate) I'm too good for this show, I am a serious actress

Cheryl) I'm too good for this show, I'll be a singing super star

Shelley) I am going to show the world models can act

Tanya) I am going to show the world I'm more than cleavage

Then there's Jaclyn

Jacklyn) I'll just sit here nice and quiet in the background and continue to collect my paychecks. I may not be the most talented but I'm not stupid

Kristen Stewart was the most beautiful AND the best actress of them all.

by Anonymousreply 118January 8, 2020 9:16 AM

R115, did you watch the Nolan Miller video?

Tanya Roberts never had any illusions about being more than cleavage.

by Anonymousreply 119January 8, 2020 2:02 PM

Jaclyn Smith was definitely over the show by the 5th season, as was Cheryl Ladd. Both wanted to move on. Tonya Roberts has talked in past interviews about how when the cancellation notice came down, Smith and Ladd were elated, and poor Tonya was devastated. Interestingly, both Smith and Roberts had better careers post-CA than did Ladd.

by Anonymousreply 120January 8, 2020 3:26 PM

Smith looks great in stills when she's in profile, but in a full-face still, you can really see her weird lower jaw thing.

When I was younger, I thought FF was the best-looking, then Cheryl Ladd. Then Tanya Roberts. But posters above are correct, T. Roberts did actually end up doing porn.

In retrospect, Jaclyn Smith is the best-looking. She had the same hairdo as Farrah except it was dark brown hair (no highlights) versus blonde hair with tons of highlights.

It’s a fun watch, but it’s of its era. I noticed it’s on at 9am on Cozi TV (here in my area). If I suspend time and belief, I can enjoy still, but it is really dated.

by Anonymousreply 140January 9, 2020 10:31 PM

R140 I agree. Although, I still watch it. Charlie’s Angels play every week night at 5:00 and I DVR the shows.

by Anonymousreply 141January 10, 2020 12:42 AM

[quote]Kate was great on CA but so awful in Scarecrow And Mrs. King.

Scarecrow and Mrs. King was one of the most godawful shows in the history of television. Fucking hated it and with any justice would've been canceled five minutes into the premier episode.

by Anonymousreply 142January 10, 2020 1:19 AM

R142 Not as much as Bruce B hated it.

As he had to Costar with the an increasingly angry and unhinged Kate!

by Anonymousreply 143January 10, 2020 5:40 AM

Farrah was just gorgeous, she really was. There was something about her that just captured the publics imagination. People were crazy about her. I think Jaclyn was a classic beauty - put her in any time period and she would be stunning.

I always thought the idea of Kate being the great actress was such a joke. She would play these "characters" and be so over the top and always with a cheesy accent. She was lovely in her "Dark Shadows" days.

Ladd did have a tough job of coming in as a replacement - she did fit in nicely though. Sorry to hear she's a Right Wing Rotter. Shame that.

by Anonymousreply 144January 10, 2020 6:32 AM

Jaclyn is also a right winger - no one talks about that.

by Anonymousreply 145January 10, 2020 7:28 AM

Jaclyn votes for whoever I tell her to.

by Anonymousreply 146January 10, 2020 9:32 AM

Jackie and Cheryl voted for Trump.

Shelley voted for Hilary.

Tanya voted for ice cream 🍦!

Kate would have voted for Hilary but couldn’t make it make it pass the stacks of newspapers blocking her doorway.

by Anonymousreply 147January 10, 2020 9:05 PM

Cheryl seems like she would have voted for Trump because she actually likes him. Jaclyn seems like she votes Republican no matter what, but she doesn’t like Trump’s language, tone and boorish ways, finds unseemly. Not that I know either one of them, I’m just guessing of course.

Tanya Roberts is an animal lover and a big time Democrat. So, show Julie Rogers some love. .

by Anonymousreply 149January 10, 2020 10:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 152January 11, 2020 3:15 PM

Having worked with Kate in the past, I'm not surprised if she is tucked away somewhere dealing with health issues. Twenty odd years ago she was already exhibiting signs of dementia or mental imbalance.

by Anonymousreply 153January 11, 2020 3:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 159January 12, 2020 9:11 AM

R159, Kate lost to Lindsay Wagner, for her stellar performance in The Bionic Woman. The other nominees were Miss Angie Dickinson, Michael Learned, and Sada Thompson.

None of those women would be nominated today with the exception of Sada.

by Anonymousreply 161January 12, 2020 6:01 PM

The fact that we're still talking about them almost 50 years later says it all.

Jaclyn Smith's hustle wouldn't let Lisa Rinna in the same zip code. She did it first, and did it best. K-Mart or Slay-Mart.

All of the originals showed up, appreciative, after Spelling died. And Kate and Jaclyn were there at the end for Farrah. 'Nuff said.

And Kate got to marry and fuck Andrew Stevens, so the real winner has been right in front of us all along.

[quote]Kate lost to Lindsay Wagner, for her stellar performance in The Bionic Woman. The other nominees were Miss Angie Dickinson, Michael Learned, and Sada Thompson.

Lindsay Wagner is a good actress and I had no problem with her winning the Emmy for "Bionic Woman." I thought it was an interesting choice by the votes. But of course, because it was an adventure series and not a heavy drama, people were appalled by her victory (Tom O'Neill of Goldderby called it the "worst Emmy win ever," an over-the-top declaration I find personally ridiculous.) Also, as mentioned previously, it was a different time then -- Stefanie Powers nominated for best actress in a drama for "Hart to Hart," something that most likely would not happen today.

by Anonymousreply 169January 12, 2020 9:49 PM

I was also surprised they said Baio was a “recent convert.” So he voted for Mondale?

by Anonymousreply 195February 2, 2020 7:54 AM

R195 Sounds like it.

I know Norris, Farr, Williams, Welchel, Lynn, Ladd & the Zimbalists all have religious right affiliation.

Whelan from the Love Boat had religious right winger Murray as a tv dad & Gopher as a far right wing co star so they could've brought her into the fold during the show.

Baio, Kaplan & Swartzenegger might all have been repubs at the time for only the tax cut reasons. Baio seems anti-gay now but did a pro gay film before 1988.

I think 1 or 2 of the Beach Boys might be religious righties but not the Wilson Phillips dad.

R199 Michael Gross? Isn’t he Jewish??

All the GGs were staunch liberal Dems so I’m not sure where the Estelle thing comes from. I’m pretty sure Rhoda was too and that MJF always was.

The rest seem right and/or plausible. Jaclyn Smith as well, I think.

by Anonymousreply 200February 2, 2020 9:01 AM

The Val Harper thing is incorrect. She was always a Democrat, actually a ‘lefty’. Read chapter 8 of “I, Rhoda”

by Anonymousreply 201February 2, 2020 9:30 AM

If true, Michael Gross and Andrea Martin are highly disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 202February 2, 2020 11:21 AM

Michael Gross - 1989 interview:

Those who equate Gross with his sitcom counterpart might have been surprised to see the actor and his wife appear four years ago on 'The 700 Club,' Pat Robertson`s show on the Christian Broadcasting Network. They talked about maintaining good Christian values as a Hollywood couple.

'Elza was a born-again Christian,' Gross said. 'Although I had not had that particular religious experience, I shared a great many of those values, coming as I did from the Midwest.

'Whenever somebody mentions I was on that show, I think they immediately tend to categorize people: `Oh, if you were on that Christian show, I know what kind of person you are,` ' Gross added. 'I happen to agree with the basic religious viewpoint of Pat Robertson, but politically he and I don`t see eye to eye at all. I guess I call myself a centrist or a little bit left of center.'

Which, Gross acknowledges, still puts him to the right of Steven Keaton.

'I didn`t feel that the parents were in charge of that family as much as I would have liked them to be,' he said. 'I thought the kids got away with an awful lot, to be quite honest. I wanted Steven to be tougher.'

by Anonymousreply 203February 2, 2020 11:50 AM

R203 awww that’s disappointing — I always liked him.

by Anonymousreply 204February 2, 2020 5:15 PM

Why? He basically clarified that he is not a right leaning Republican.

by Anonymousreply 205February 2, 2020 5:21 PM

R203 From that interview you posted, it sounds like MG received some fallout from going on that show. I actually saw him on the show in the 90s (after plenty of anti gay attacks against us & other groups). I'd expect him to say that in the '89 interview because Family Ties was coming to an end & he wanted to be a film star (Tremors anyone?). As his Hollywood chances of getting on another sit-com was growing dimmer, I think he threw caution to the wind & showed up again with the old bigot.

Justine Bateman was the other born again Christian on F. Ties. Gossip said that she tormented Michael J. Fox with anti-gay stuff back in the 80s when the show was being filmed. I recall that she did Inside Edition interview (or something like that in the late 90s maybe Extra or AH?) saying that she had become one. I wonder if Michael &/or his wife converted Justine?

R200 You've never heard of "Jews For Jesus"?

That interview was over 30 years ago. R205 They say plenty of people get more conservative as they get older. He's a senior white male rich guy who supports Israel. There's a good chance he voted for Trump but is "in the closet" about it today.

by Anonymousreply 206February 2, 2020 5:24 PM

R202 Ol' Andrea even came on the show to celebrate Pat's birthday one time.

The first Christians didn't celebrate birthdays as they thought it was a form of idolatry/vanity prohibited in the Bible.

I guess Pat is a liberal on that issue.

R200 E. Getty was an out republican who supported the religious right's merger with Reagan & Bush at the time. She was the sit-com Joan Rivers where she would mention AIDS publically, do a fundraiser & then go donate $ to the repubs who were reluctant to give any public $ to the cause & vote them in office.

by Anonymousreply 207February 2, 2020 5:31 PM

[quote]Justine Bateman was the other born again Christian on F. Ties. Gossip said that she tormented Michael J. Fox with anti-gay stuff back in the 80s when the show was being filmed.

Why? Did she think he was gay and was trying to convert him?

by Anonymousreply 208February 2, 2020 5:40 PM

R200 M. J. Fox was a repub until the stem cell issue that affected his own health came about. He was asked by someone in the audience on the Phil Donahue show back in the day (early 90s) if he was a republican or just played one on tv. He reply was that he was indeed a republican.

Jackyn Smith's husband recently ran for public office as a republican & was against gay marriage. She stood by him & supported his platform. Bigot loving bitch.

Rhoda might be a left leaning religious right supporter but she still is one. She was one of the most frequent Hollywood supporters on the 700 Club in the 1990s. The right leaning celebs supported her over Melissa Gilbert but she still lost to half pint in 2001. Mary Tyler Moore also was a Bill O'Reilly Fox loving repub at the end of her life according to Ed Asner. Murray & his wife were also right wing religious nuts so I think Betty White & Ed might've been the only liberals left on the MTM show.

R208 The gossip was that M. J. Fox was bisexual & was dating a guy when this all went down. They would be in his trailer (also doing cocaine which gives Parkinson like symptoms in some users which is what MJF claims he has now) & Justine would say anti gay slurs outside the trailer windows (while they were being intimate) & stuff like that. She wasn't a born again Christian then (just a narrow minded bigot).

by Anonymousreply 209February 2, 2020 5:46 PM

Enough about politics! I watch an episode of this crap fest when I come home from work every night as a palate cleanser-it’s stupid entertainment from a simpler time.

Season five is on Roku now. It’s so clear at this point that nobody involved in this show gave a fuck anymore. The clothes are dowdier and cheaper looking, the sets look tired, the plots have even bigger holes in them. There’s no joy in the show. The only person who seems happy to be there is Tanya Roberts, but that could be the cocaine.

by Anonymousreply 210February 2, 2020 5:56 PM

Google shows nothing about Andrea Martin ever knowing Pat Robertson or being on 700 Club.

by Anonymousreply 211February 2, 2020 6:34 PM

Probably someone who looked like Andrea Martin.

by Anonymousreply 212February 2, 2020 7:19 PM

My older sister (still in high school at the time) volunteered for Dukakis and she got to work on and attend some big gala. I saw the names of the stars who were attending — they were all billed on the invitation — and while I don’t remember most of them I do remember a few: Penny Marshall, Rob Lowe, Michael J Fox, Cicely Tyson, and Mary Tyler Moore (obviously before she crossed over to the other side).

So take that for what it’s worth .

by Anonymousreply 213February 2, 2020 8:47 PM

I must be in the minority. I expect people who act on shows to entertain me. Other than that, I am not interested i them one way or the other

by Anonymousreply 214February 2, 2020 9:31 PM

R211 I hate to be the one to tell you but everything isn't found on Google. I'm guessing to have the career she had in the past 10-15 years she had some things scrubbed from the internet notably her pat RObertson ties. Old footage of the 700 Club from the 80s & 90s are also hard to find.

R212 It's the SCTV star who appeared on The 700 Club because I could never watch her on the show (or anything again) after seeing her kiss his nasty ass (unlike R214).

Other repub sit com stars are Kirstie Alley (who is still kissing Trump's butt) & her dead VC co-star Ron Silver who switched parties after 9/11 crediting "My Pet Goat" reader Bush Jr. as the best candidate to protect Americans from terrorism (lol).

A quick check at the 700 Club site doesn't include many stars who appeared on the show over the years. Anti gay Roland Martin, Stevie Wonder, Alveda King, Emilio Estevez & Martin Sheen are other celebs giving interviews.

I see a 22 episode Christian soap opera called "Hilton Head Island" with Antonio Sabato Jr., Donna Mills & Wink Martindale was being produced on 8-9-17. Has anyone seen it? Maybe Ladd & Smith will appear in it.

by Anonymousreply 216February 2, 2020 10:33 PM

Why do you Queens have to derail my thread with your bullshit?

by Anonymousreply 217February 3, 2020 9:55 AM

RIP Farrah, but she acted all confused and barely coherent when she, Kate and Jaclyn came out at the 2006 Daytime Emmys to honor Aaron Spelling.

She could barely string two words together (compared to Kate's speech), and frankly, as some people tend to do, made it more about herself than Aaron.

She was only on Charlie's Angels for a year and they didn't even ask her back for her final two (of six) guest spots.

No one would have noticed if it'd been Cheryl, Kate, and Jaclyn who did the tribute; Cheryl did four seasons, Kate three, and Jaclyn five.

by Anonymousreply 218February 4, 2020 4:57 AM

okay, I just watched it she wasn't THAT bad, but she wasn't good either; way too nervous; fidgety - she may have been ill, I hope not.

by Anonymousreply 219February 4, 2020 5:20 AM

R218 Jill Monroe showed up and performed at Emmy caliber in ALL 6 guest spots!

Get your CA facts straight before you post.

Bitch

by Anonymousreply 220February 4, 2020 6:29 AM

I agree with R219 about Farrah's appearance at the AS tribute. Also I don't think Kate would've done that if Cheryl was a part of it.

Maybe she could tolerate one repub (Smith) but two was probably one too many.

I think the original three was what folks wanted to see (or perhaps all 6 together for the first time but maybe too many egos plus Tanya's porn past as a big issue).

Ladd was always a band-aid on the show since the CA formula required "3 little girls" from the start (& as the black silhouette CA symbol suggested).

by Anonymousreply 221February 4, 2020 7:15 AM

It was the PRIMETIME Emmys, r218.

by Anonymousreply 222February 4, 2020 9:03 AM

R220 (and R218), I sit corrected!

Her six guest spots were:

- An Angel's Trail (1980) - The Prince and the Angel (1979) - Fallen Angel (1979) - Angel in a Box (1979) - Mother Angel (1978) - Angel Come Home (1978)

by Anonymousreply 223February 6, 2020 1:32 AM

Looks like Kate Jackson is going to be at the Chiller Theatre autograph show in NJ in April along with Tanya.

by Anonymousreply 224February 11, 2020 12:13 PM

I like them all first few years and have to say that Kris was my favorite, then Jill, Sabrina and Kelly. I look at it now and Kelly was nearly brain dead in the smarts department but she was beautiful. Tiffany was okay but Julie killed the serious. I couldn't watch anymore. Plus the fashion changed. I watch the dvds now and the 70s look was so awesome style wise. But when they got into the 80s clothes it's so dated and bad. Some of the 70s outfits could still be rocked today but not the 80s. Shoulder pads bad. What were people thinking. Women looking like a box is good?

by Anonymousreply 225February 11, 2020 1:55 PM

Where are you hearing that, R224 -- it's not on the Chiller Theatre website and I can't find anything by googling it...

OMG I want to be in the warm embrace of two living Angels.

As to the OP, while rewatching the series recently, I was struck by Jaclyn's, uh, acting. She seemed mentally dull, but sweet. I never got the streetwise edge the character was meant to have. Farrah wasn't necessarily a great actress then, but she had brightness and sense of fun.

Honestly I lost interest quickly after Kate left. She's my favorite, and I don't think the other trios had chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 233February 12, 2020 2:25 AM

I recently watched the pilot; great supporting cast with Bo Hopkins, Diana Muldar and Tommy Lee Jones.

Kelly sure had brains in the pilot. Kate was originally supposed to be Kelly hence Kelly's expanded role.

Kelly has to pull off being two steps ahead of the bad guys when she's really three steps ahead. That scene where she pulls up to the estate on the motorcycle and takes the helmet off revealing that gorgeous face and hair? I don't think there's ever been anyone more beautiful.

In the pilot, Kate plays (undercover) haughty Janet Lemare (sp?) who comes to a hotel and insists upon 'the fourth floor' at the hotel in a way that Dominique Deveraux could only dream of pulling off.

I never got Kate's loyalty to Farrah (assuming it was tied to her dismissiveness of Cheryl); Farrah NOT an actress (certainly not then) and not loyal to the show. What was Kate missing about her? but I guess she didn't have to respect her as an actress to like her as a friend.

The working for a boss you don't see thing might not play today; it got criticism back then.

It's too bad David Ogden Stiers (sp?) didn't want to sign on for the series, but it gave Bosley an expanded role.

You sound like one of those fragile celebrity worshippers that can't accept reality R236.

Why don't you write to AM or go on her Twitter account (if she has one) & ask her if she has appeared on the 700 Club & if so how many times?

Try writing to the 700 Club & ask them if she has appeared on the show over the years. Maybe they'll give you a couple of her appearances on tape/dvd/usb stick.

by Anonymousreply 238February 21, 2020 5:48 AM

R224 I don't see Kate listed on the Chiller website for the April show. She must've cancelled or something.

Tanya is still listed, though.

by Anonymousreply 239February 21, 2020 6:00 AM

David Ogden Stiers didn't want to sign on for the series because he didn't have a choice - ABC felt there were too many people inthe pilot and dropped him. He later got MASH, so good news for him. Kate hated the fact that Cheryl came in 2nd season and basically highjacked the fame. Honestly, Cheryl was a BIG deal, and the media was waiting for the NEW angel that replaced Farrah. Kate believed that when Farrah left, Jaclyn Smith and Kate would be the focus. The "new girl" would kinda take the back seat - It didn't work out that way. America was rooting for the underdog.

by Anonymousreply 240February 21, 2020 9:28 PM

Charlie's Angels didn't become No. 1 in the ratings until Cheryl Ladd joined the show.

Kate could act -- the others, not so much. She HAD to have known that.

I can't understand why she was a big Farrah fan. Farrah's 'acting' on CA was horrible.

Maybe she was in love with her.

Tanya Roberts just did a Facebook live Q & A. The other angels make appearances now and then, Cheryl looks great. Why do we never see any pics of Kate Jackson? Like celebrity Paparazzi stuff? No guest appearances on any TV shows. Its kinda weird..

by Anonymousreply 243May 5, 2020 4:25 AM

[quote]"Who did you despise?"

Oh, dear.

After 243 fucking responses, "Oh, fucking dear."

by Anonymousreply 244May 5, 2020 4:34 AM

Tanya is starting to sound (and look to a lesser extent) old in that facebook chat video.

Kate has kept a low profile in the last decade. It's been a few years since she's been photographed by paparazzi.

There were reports of her acting weird on sets back in the 2000s, when she was doing episodic TV work. Some suspected she had a pill problem. Plus with her getting older, less employment opportunities come in.

by Anonymousreply 245May 5, 2020 4:51 AM

Those first 4 Angels were HUGE - Its very strange to me that we still get media on Smith and Ladd, but nothing from Kate Jackson. NO commercial endorsements, No memoirs, nothing in like over 10 years. Not ONE celebrity magazine interview. Didn't she adopt a son or something? It just very odd how she just disappeared...

by Anonymousreply 246May 5, 2020 11:11 AM

Kate was suppose to be at an autograph show here in New Jersey 2 weeks ago but obviously that was cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 247May 5, 2020 11:30 AM

Farrah of course was my favorite. And I hated the other two bitches who just let her leave, which is how my 9-year old brain interpreted the whole Farrah kerfuffle.

by Anonymousreply 248May 5, 2020 11:37 AM

R243 and R218 Kate Jackson has not been seen since Farrah's death.

I think it's drugs plus bipolar.

There is an old tabloid article you can Google, that talks about her having a meth problem and shows photos of he sad home - which is that of a tweaker hoarder.

The pictures are rough to look at, they remind me of the Whitney pictures when she was in full on addiction and they took pictures of her bathroom.

The KJ photos were allegedly taken by the maid.

by Anonymousreply 249May 5, 2020 11:38 AM

i find it interesting how in the 1st season the 3 angels were so laid back and laid back in their 70's style clothing, just very casual and how every year after they dressed to the nines, very chic, very fashionable (almost too much) as the 80's started....

totally different vibe from the 1st season to the remaining seasons.....also it seemed in that 1st season they actually DID MORE investigating and used actual police academy training skills?..

by Anonymousreply 250May 5, 2020 11:58 AM

R234, I agree with everything you wrote about the pilot. I remember that iconic scene with Jaclyn taking off the motorcycle helmet (go to the 40 second mark in the attached video). She was gorgeous! Jaclyn did have a lot more to do in the pilot compared to the other two. Kate was next as to screen time. Farrah was actually the weak link.

I always loved the pilot. It's fun to revisit. It's dated, but for someone who grew up during the 1970s when this show was a massive hit, I can see why it became the phenomenon it did. Also note in the pilot how the women use their beauty to dupe the men, who are always portrayed as not nearly as smart as the Angels. Many militant feminists missed this aspect of the show and focused on the Jiggle TV aspect of it. The women were rarely in bikinis as was always reported. However, the Angels in Chains episode was probably the worst when it came to that. Still, that episode is so campy and fun to watch these days. The subtle (or not so subtle?) the-guards-are-butch-lesbians aspect makes me chuckle today.

by Anonymousreply 251May 5, 2020 5:22 PM

Jacklyn has more to do in the pilot because Kate changed her mind and wanted to play Sabrina

by Anonymousreply 252May 5, 2020 5:33 PM

I would have made that fucking Kate Jackson honor her contract and stay the entire FIVE years. They sue Farrah and let Kate out when she started acting like a cunt

by Anonymousreply 253May 6, 2020 12:17 AM

Fave - Shelley Hack. Least - Kate Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 254May 6, 2020 1:12 AM

R253, Kate was fired. She became increasingly difficult to work with. She and the producers agreed it was time for her to go. She didn't make a big deal out of being fired because she didn't want to be there anymore. She thought it was her escape.

I remember when it happened, the official story was that Kate was leaving to pursue movies and other opportunities. The reality was they were fed up with all her bitching. Jaclyn and Cheryl were very professional and treated it like a job. Kate bitched constantly and was miserable to producers, writers, directors, even wardrobe and makeup. She was very cold to Cheryl, although I've always read that she and Jaclyn got along just fine. But even Jaclyn in interviews has hinted that Kate wasn't pleasant to others.

Long story, short, the powers-that-be didn't want Kate around anymore and she didn't care, so she got canned!

by Anonymousreply 255May 6, 2020 6:35 PM

R255 They fired Kate Jackson to only replace her with fucking Shelly Hack? God, Kate must really have been an UBER bitch. Kate kept the show grounded in reality.

by Anonymousreply 256May 6, 2020 11:07 PM

I don't know if you'd consider it sad or amusing that she hated being stuck on "Charlie's Angels" only to leave it and go on to do a shitty show like "Scarecrow & Mrs. King."

by Anonymousreply 257May 7, 2020 5:15 AM

R257, rumor was that Kate was not as difficult on Scarecrow and Mrs. King set. She supposedly got along with her co-star Bruce Boxleitner. She unfortunately was diagnosed with breast cancer in the show's 4th and last season. The ratings were already dropping a bit, but because of her illness, she missed a few shows and/or had her scenes cut down because she was too sick to work full-time. It adversely affected the storylines, the ratings took a big drop, and the show was canceled.

by Anonymousreply 258May 7, 2020 5:17 PM

I thought I read somewhere that she and Boxleitner loathed each other.

by Anonymousreply 259May 7, 2020 7:31 PM

Kate had that BAD orange hair color in "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" - After that her career lost traction. Fame, ain't it a bitch - She NEVER embraced "Charlies Angels" until that fake ass tribute with the original 3. And I think she was the reason poor Cheryl Ladd wasn't allowed on stage. Kate is a miserable cunt - So glad that she got what she deserved.

by Anonymousreply 260May 8, 2020 12:05 AM

Kate had been critical about the lightweight scripts from the beginning, and she would voice her displeasure to anyone on set. She even went off when a People magazine was on the set doing an article about Cheryl joining the show early during second two and they reported her on set behavior.

[[quote]]Kate: “Why do I have to say this garbage! This is shit, shit, shit!”

Cheryl responded back jokingly;

[[quote]]“Aw, come on, Kate, tell us how you really feel.”

I think that's one of the reasons they didn't get along, Cheryl didn't go along with all her complaints like Jaclyn and Farrah would. Cheryl knew what the show was, and went along with it. Some days Kate wouldn't even acknowledge Cheryl, let along even speak to her.

During season three, Kate's behavior became even worse. She was still very unhappy about the quality of the show and was very pissed that they wouldn't let her leave to do Kramer vs Kramer. Apparently, during one the later episodes that season, Marathon Angels, she threw a huge fit about how stupid episode was, which basically a very thin script that was excuse to show lots of women running around tight shirts and shorts. That might have been one of the final straws for Aaron Spelling.

by Anonymousreply 261May 8, 2020 12:43 AM

Kate, you’re fired!

by Anonymousreply 262May 8, 2020 2:31 AM

She and Jaclyn Smith were close friends. Godmothers to each others children.

by Anonymousreply 263May 8, 2020 6:33 AM

Kate is now a shut-in and, a supposed hoarder. Please don't let Jaclyn's children see that!

by Anonymousreply 264May 8, 2020 7:18 AM

Jaclyn's children are grown and have kids of their own, she's named an infantswear line after one of the grandkids I think. She's setting up her daughter to take over as she ages out of her Kmart (and other brands) business, and to youthen the face of it all. And, Jaclyn's children will never, ever want for money.

by Anonymousreply 265May 8, 2020 2:14 PM

She wasn't wrong about Marathon Angels. That was just an hour of women jogging with Sabrina and Bosley following them in a car.

by Anonymousreply 266May 8, 2020 2:17 PM

R266.. never mind, NONE OF THE WOMEN looked like they had ever jogged 10 feet much less a marathon! laugh!...

total jiggle episode with no redeeming value of any kind...

wasn't there also a ridiculous episode about old fashion cars where sabrina had to dress up like a keystone cop?!..

by Anonymousreply 267May 8, 2020 2:21 PM

Looking at the show now the women constantly complaining about the quality of the scripts is very valid. It's not the premise of most of them, that's pretty solid. It's the writing. The chemistry saves the show, when the chemistry suffered, so did the show and then it was gone. Even for what it is, the writing could be much better: the women rarely do any actual detective work (though they do go through file cabinets), every episode is a chase caper where we see the perp at the top of show, their disguises when they go undercover are so terrible, the scripts have them meeting in broad daylight in front of everyone when they're pretending to be people who wouldn't know each other. And all those dog songs by Ed Lasko. It would've been nice to have some real whodunit episodes where there are multiple suspects, there are very few of those. Sometimes the Angels can drop a guy with a karate chop, other times a villain throws a briefcase at them and three of them drop to the ground. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 268May 8, 2020 3:21 PM

R268... all true..

by Anonymousreply 269May 8, 2020 3:35 PM

Oh Jesus, R267, the old timey car episode was the worst ever in my opinion. It was dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 270May 8, 2020 4:13 PM

It never was about the scripts - It was ALWAYS about the chemistry of the girls. It's really a miracle that Cheryl Ladd was able to replace a phenomenon like Farrah. I really don't understand why she was able to step right in and fill her shoes? Was Cheryl Ladd really THAT big a deal?

by Anonymousreply 271May 8, 2020 6:54 PM

R271, Cheryl Ladd was smart. She initially played Chris Monroe as Jill's clumsy younger sister who is trying hard to learn the ropes, but she's not quite at the level Jill was. It made her sympathetic to the audience who rooted for her. The ratings for Charlie's Angels actually went up when Cheryl joined.

I agree with above posters about the chemistry between the actresses on screen being the key. Shelley Hack gets a lot of flack (that was intended) for the show's drop in the ratings. When you watch that season back, though, they split the Angels up too much and they had episodes where they were at odds, like the one where Patrick Duffy came between Jaclyn and Cheryl. The show worked best when the Angels worked as a team. After Kate Jackson left, that was missing.

by Anonymousreply 272May 8, 2020 7:40 PM

I remember that in season 4 they started focusing on individual storylines for each Angel. Like when Kris went undercover in prison. Kelly and Tiffany had very small bit parts in the episode. The girls were overworked and the idea was just to focus on 1 girl and give the other two a break. It fucked up the chemistry of the dynamic of the series. Spelling got incredibly lucky with Cheryl - Hack & Roberts didn't bring anything to the show. The writers strike and the change in primetime killed the show. I would have loved to see Season 6 with Cheryl and 2new girls I would have been interesting to see a series with a completely new cast from its debut - hey, one question Why in the hell did they make Julie a "model" instead of a former cop? That was not even the concept of the show!

by Anonymousreply 273May 8, 2020 8:03 PM

I think, too, by the time they got to season 4, it was more than obvious that Jaclyn was over it and just wanted out of there as soon as possible.

[quote]Why in the hell did they make Julie a "model" instead of a former cop? That was not even the concept of the show!

I think I understood this choice by the producers/writers. They wanted to establish Julie as an outlier of sorts -- i.e., she was not a formally-trained cop in any way, shape or form but instead a civilian who just had good instincts for crime-solving and therefore came on board to work with the Angels. It's kind of the same sort of way they explained the character of Mrs. Peel in "The Avengers," who was described as a "talented amateur" working with the super spy John Steed.

by Anonymousreply 274May 9, 2020 1:40 AM

Charlie's Angels is one of the true classic tv shows of all time. It should have been on at least 10 years, not just 5.

by Anonymousreply 275May 9, 2020 1:44 AM

[quote]I would have loved to see Season 6 with Cheryl and 2new girls I would have been interesting to see a series with a completely new cast from its debut

True, though my guess would be that it would've been just one new girl because Tanya likely would've been invited to return for a season six. (She had worked out in her debut a lot better than Shelley did.)

by Anonymousreply 276May 9, 2020 1:52 AM

Tanya, Demi and a black Angel!

by Anonymousreply 277May 9, 2020 1:54 AM

also julie at the time was ONLY suppose to be a fill in for tiffany when tiffany came back from being back east for awhile (though it was never mentioned WHAT EXACTLY was she doing back east, i.e. Boston).... and julie does eventually get her p.i. license so there you go...

by Anonymousreply 278May 9, 2020 1:54 AM

Jaclyn was over doing the show, but she believed in fulfilling her contact obligations, even though she often phoned in it during seasons 4 and especially 5. As much as I like her and Kelly, she wasn't really suited as being the lead Angels.

There were rumors prior to them canceling the show that they were seriously considering bringing Farrah back for season 6 to replace Jaclyn. In late 1980/early 1981, Aaron Spelling was spotted having dinner with Farrah. If it was true, things obviously fell through.

I think Tanya would've returned with Cheryl and another new Angel had the show been renewed. Aaron Spelling and other higher ups liked her pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 280May 9, 2020 2:00 AM

R268 I love the premise of the pilot.

which were mind numbing.

But remember, I was still the prettiest!

by Anonymousreply 282May 9, 2020 2:14 PM

R279 also by the time we got to the end of S5, though she looked amazing, Jaclyn was approaching the old side of what an Angel is supposed to be (as defined in the initial seasons). When they started in 1976, she was 31, playing mid-to-late 20s. When they finished in 1981, she was 36, playing early 30s with Cheryl who is six years younger and Tanya who is a full decade younger. Thus her frequent covered up high-collar, long sleeved, sweaters-in-LA and Hawaii costumes of S4 & 5. Once the series was over, she had children (in 1982 and 1985).

by Anonymousreply 283May 9, 2020 4:15 PM

That's funny, R283. When I originally watched the show, I assumed Kate Jackson was the oldest, but she was the youngest. Jaclyn was the oldest, followed by Farrah and then Kate. Didn't the publicity machine lie about their ages when the show first started? I swear they said they were all mid-20s. Kate would have been the closest at 27-28 when the pilot was shot.

by Anonymousreply 284May 9, 2020 4:21 PM

r273, I did notice that too, and I disliked it. They weren't doing their quirkly undercover roles as much and were more about their true personas. Lots the charm of the series for me (watching as an adult) as a kid it got boring. I moved on to other shows.

by Anonymousreply 285May 9, 2020 6:05 PM

Why did Farrah leave so early on? I don't understand these actors who leave after the initial burst of success. The guy from NYPD Blue was another one.

Clooney got it right by staying until season five of ER and having already done a handful of movies on his breaks from the show. Same with Bruce Willis who stayed with Moonlighting all the way through.

by Anonymousreply 286May 9, 2020 6:14 PM

Season 5 question - Why didi they include fucking old hag Patricia DeArbanville in a recurring role? I was always hoping they weren't going to add her to the show

by Anonymousreply 287May 9, 2020 9:20 PM

[quote]Why did Farrah leave so early on? I don't understand these actors who leave after the initial burst of success.

R289! i concur! i mean it wasn't like she was being offered the best roles WHILE she was on the show and prevented from doing them so she just had to quit charlie's angels!.. was her fame and success that great after just 1 year that she thought it would translate to movies, any movie?... she must have been getting AWFUL AWFUL career advice (jay bernstein?)..

by Anonymousreply 292May 10, 2020 1:30 PM

Arron Tried to give Farrah a great movie deal and I believe was going to modify the "Charlies Angels" filming schedule where she would taketh lead in "Foul Play" He had some deal set up at the studio where she would film a movie every year on her hiatus. Farrah just didn't want to have anything to do with the series. You can see she had done TONS of publicity for the show while she was involved. It was all very strange.

by Anonymousreply 293May 10, 2020 1:56 PM

Wasn't Lee Majors in Farrah's ear about being better than the show but also wanting her to stay home and play housewife? I always thought he was jealous of her rising star while his was in a decline and he, intentionally or not, sabotaged her career.

by Anonymousreply 294May 10, 2020 1:59 PM

Farrah because she was a Texas girl!

by Anonymousreply 295May 10, 2020 2:00 PM

I started watching this series when it was in syndication. I think they were in the middle of airing Season 2 or 3 (whenever Cheryl Tiegs was a regular). She was blonde and the other two had black hair, so I liked Cheryl. Yeah, I'm a basic bitch, so sue me. I kept watching all the way to the end. I though the Bond Girl was kind of dumb. Tanya Roberts, was it? She didn't do anything for me. Sorry Tanya, you are the weakest link, goodbye.

I also despise the remakes 2.0 and 3.0.

by Anonymousreply 296May 10, 2020 2:04 PM

Yes r293, I remember Farrah was supposed to play the leading role in "Foul Play". She was dropped from "Foul Play" because of the Charlie's Angels lawsuit, and the part was eventually played by Goldie Hawn.

Farrah was also dropped from the movie "Coma". The part was eventually played by Genevieve Bujold.

Shelley Hack was homely. Blech.

by Anonymousreply 298May 10, 2020 2:17 PM

R298, she ruined Charlie’s Angels with her lack of talent, but she was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 299May 10, 2020 2:20 PM

Patricia D'Arbanville had a large head, and very little neck to speak of. It gave her a bobble-head like look.

Farrah would have been okay in Foul Play but Goldie was really perfect. I can't even imagine Farrah in Coma. That's akin to Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist in whatever James Bond movie that was.

by Anonymousreply 302May 10, 2020 2:31 PM

Farrah had a very interesting career trajectory. Charlie's Angels made her an instant star. Her attempts to be a movie star post Charlie's Angels in the late 70s was a huge flop. But she did make rare, successful Hollywood comeback in the 80s with acclaimed roles in The Burning Bed, Extremities (the play and film) and Small Sacrifices. She was finally taken seriously as an actress and had her pick of roles for a little while (albeit in TV movies). Then by the late 90s, her messy personal life derailed her career again.

by Anonymousreply 303May 10, 2020 4:51 PM

You would have never thought her personal life would get as messy as it did. I really think she had a drug problem.

by Anonymousreply 304May 10, 2020 5:48 PM

Hey, just wondering if it was a BIG deal when Farrah started making her 6 court required guest appearances on Charlies Angels? Did the ratings hit an all time high? I wonder if she really hated going back to film those..

by Anonymousreply 305May 11, 2020 9:02 PM

I think the first time she returned it was an event, especially to see how she would interact with Ladd. But that episode turned out to be a snoozefest and Jill didn’t have the same spark as Season 1.

The only episode I sorta liked of the six episodes was ironically the one that kept Fawcett and Ladd apart. Kris is kidnapped and the three original Angels team up to locate her.

by Anonymousreply 306May 11, 2020 11:15 PM

Not so much R305, the first few were much hyped, but the last ones they barely publicized and only did them out of obligation. Her career had completely tanked. When she did the movie "Somebody Killed My Husband" it was reviewed as "Somebody Killed Her Career."

by Anonymousreply 307May 11, 2020 11:59 PM

it seemed that farrah went "all serious" for her 6 return episodes, also her famous locks were changed so that didn't help either.. and then of course the stupid episodes themselves... first off farrah left the agency to become a female professional race car driver? LMAO!

by Anonymousreply 308May 12, 2020 12:34 AM

I liked cousin Geri, although she only appeared on a handful of episodes she was hilarious when she chased after criminals, although she sadly never caught them no matter how many times she got back on her feet.

by Anonymousreply 309May 12, 2020 1:03 AM

r308 I actually think the same thing. It was like Farrah lost her spark when she returned. There are numerous pictures of the 4 Angels all taken for publicity and there is not ONE picture where at least 1 of the 4 woman look less than awkward. I would love to hear honest remarks from the cast. Ladd happy that Farrahs career move bombed, Kate jealous that Farrah got to film motion pictures, Jackie just happy to have a job and fulfill her contract. Ladd replaced a TV Icon and then to have great success and suddenly have to FILM with Farrah must have been uncomfortable

by Anonymousreply 310May 12, 2020 1:37 AM

Farrah was not happy about having to return for the 6 guest spots for Seasons 3 and 4. She didn't really have much of a choice though.

Cheryl said Farrah wasn't happy during those episodes and wasn't particularly friendly towards her. It must've stung some for Farrah that was not only replaced, but successfully replaced.

I think there was some initial tension between Farrah from Kate and Jaclyn as well. Everyone was worried how the show would fare after she bailed. They both got over it and became friends again.

by Anonymousreply 311May 12, 2020 2:22 AM

Yeah, Farrah was clearly unhappy about having to do those guest episodes and it came through in her performance. Each one played more like a hostage video than an episode of "Charlie's Angels."

For my money probably the most enjoyable of the 6 was the one with Timothy Dalton as a cat burglar with whom Jill was supposedly in love. They had a pretty good karate fight on a rooftop at the end.

by Anonymousreply 312May 12, 2020 3:24 AM

Kate

by Anonymousreply 313May 12, 2020 3:26 AM

Could you IMAGINE being poor Shelly Hack and just not asked back - and then STILL required to finish filming for season 4? They did really push her Career, she got the Iron on Transfer, the blue raincoat poster - She just never caught on..

by Anonymousreply 314May 12, 2020 3:51 AM

r314 They fired Shelly Hack before the 4th season was done filming - Pretty damn HARSH. You'd think that Cheryl & Smith would have had some pull with Spelling? I want the true fucking story, were the other girls in on it?

by Anonymousreply 315May 12, 2020 3:56 AM

I think what someone said upthread made a lot of sense -- with Kris, there was a personal connection (she was Jill's younger sister), so it was easier for the audience to like her and root for her (plus Ladd was just a perfect fit for the show). Perhaps they should have gone a similar route with Tiffany -- maybe she should've been Sabrina's best friend from the police academy who was taking over after Sabrina recommended her to Charlie? Just a thought.

by Anonymousreply 316May 12, 2020 3:58 AM

Spelling would have a hit show and then kill it with cast changes and bad replacements. This is what happened to Dynasty - It was like they did not nurture the series after they became successful

by Anonymousreply 317May 12, 2020 4:23 AM

By Season 4, the scripts had grown stale and repetitive. They also switched to focusing on one Angel per episode, which means that instead of the Angels' camaraderie, we got a series of tepid, woman-in-danger movies of the week. Worst of all, perhaps, was their attempt to tackle serious subjects. They were over their heads and it showed. Although Shelley Hack may have had issues making it work, I think it's unfortunate that the producers seemed to blame her for everything and did not try to fix the quality of the episodes, which showed itself in much-worse Season 5.

by Anonymousreply 318May 12, 2020 4:27 AM

r318 The scripts were bad in Season 4, Same thing with Dynasty, remember the alien kidnapping Fallon? Why didn't Spelling take the time to really invest time and some fucking effort into these successful shows? I always wonder, don't the stars have any pull? Did the girls want Shelly fucking Hack? Wasn't Kate a big star and have some voice on the show? I honestly don't get it..

by Anonymousreply 319May 12, 2020 5:24 AM

Can we talk about how BAD season 5 was? Like, just bad television. Tanya Roberts had played a cop on an episode of Vegas. Why didn't they make the connection and have her be THAT same cop who ends up working for Charlie? Dan Tanna could have done a guest star like he did in the episode "Angels in Vegas" It's like no one at Spelling Productions had a fucking brain. Better than "graduating from a top school for models" WTF was that all about?

by Anonymousreply 320May 12, 2020 5:33 AM

I think just about everyone gave up after ratings dropped so much over the course of Season 4. Something like 60% of the viewing audience quit watching by the end of Season 4. Few shows rebound after that much of a ratings decline. The press and even Aaron Spelling noted before Season 5 started production that it would likely be the last. They did need one more Season to break the 100 episode mark, to ensure good syndication deals.

by Anonymousreply 321May 12, 2020 5:44 AM

[quote]Can we talk about how BAD season 5 was?

While you may have a point, season five gave us the classic episode "Angel on the Line" with DL fave Margo so for that alone it gets a pass.

by Anonymousreply 322May 12, 2020 5:56 AM

I prefer Season 5 to Season 4 because it at least had the Angels actually working together instead of individual solo episodes. Though “Angel Hunt” from S4 was one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 323May 12, 2020 6:02 AM

I FORGET what was the excuse why sabrina left the agency? was it suppose to be temporary like TIffany staying back East for a bit....

by Anonymousreply 324May 12, 2020 12:25 PM

She got married and knocked up.

by Anonymousreply 325May 12, 2020 1:15 PM

r322, I agree about the Margo episode.

It's interesting how they made Margo the deranged tranny wear a Farrah wig. I think the producers were trying to throw shade at Farrah.

by Anonymousreply 326May 12, 2020 2:30 PM

Margo episode was at least campy and fun - The whole season 4 was a bore. Shelly Hack should have QUIT before they fired her. Hey, question -When you have a 5 year contract on a hit show, it only works one way? Like You have a 5 year contract but Spelling can fire you? But if your Farrah with a 5 year contract, you can't quit? Am I missing something?

by Anonymousreply 327May 13, 2020 2:53 AM

I think at least for the first season of the contracts, had an option where they show runners could either fire them or pick up the option to bring them back for another Season. That's what Tanya said she was doing the newspaper press rounds around the time Season 5 premiered. I'd assume Shelley probably had the same type of contract.

Shelley's firing was rather cold. They were filming on Valentines Day, and Jaclyn, Cheryl and David Doyle all got Valentines inviting them to return for another Season. Shelley didn't. She wasn't told she was fired that day, though. She did find out the next day (although, she had to have a clue something was up from what happened the day before) when a reporter called her home phone asking for comments for being fired from the show.

by Anonymousreply 328May 13, 2020 3:19 AM

I mean, could you imagine? They didn't have the decency to call Shelly in to let her go? She finds out from a reporter asking for a comment? Could you imagine your co-workers Cheryl, Jaclyn, and David not being supportive? Everyman for themselves, huh? No wonder Tori is such a fucking nut

by Anonymousreply 329May 13, 2020 4:23 AM

R329 And then the former angels all come together without Cheryl Ladd for a tribute to Spelling. This is after Farrah quits and Kate gets fired. What a damn mess. Two-faced business watching Kate speak at his tribute and Aaron clapping like a trained seal. I don't understand the business.

by Anonymousreply 330May 13, 2020 8:59 PM

Jaclyn Smith is Switzerland

by Anonymousreply 331May 14, 2020 6:58 PM

R331 Remember, we now know Switzerland was anything but neutral in WW II and much more a collaborated where money and art were concerned.

by Anonymousreply 332May 14, 2020 7:50 PM

^ On that note Jaclyn completely fucked me over by siding with that cunt Cheryl. She’s dead to me.

by Anonymousreply 333May 14, 2020 7:53 PM

^ signed Kate!

by Anonymousreply 334May 14, 2020 7:53 PM

Shelley got a bad deal in some ways, that some of the writer's scripts for S4 were due before she was cast, so they had no idea who they were writing for or what the character would end up being. The scripts where they play to her strengths later in the season, she's fine or even better than that. Then there are episodes where she's just not good, or she has no material in which to be good.

She wasn't set up for success, and her failure was compounded by her being not nice to people on set (whether out of insecurity or who knows what). Her hair and makeup people got back at her with how she looked onscreen--never before or since has Shelley Hack been presented so unattractively. She was a supermodel in the 70s (for cryin' out loud), an expert clotheshorse, so one can only assume it was done on purpose. Nonetheless, ABC really tried with her: Cutter to Houston and Jack and Mike both followed her CA stint.

Hack herself was born in Connecticut and graduated from Smith, and has since had a remarkable life outside of acting. She has an MBA now, for real.

Both Tiffany and Julie make sense as post-Sabrina directions for the show, on paper: Tiffany, still the smart middle angel, but this time super-educated and upscale instead of street-smart, fast talking, and shrewd like Sabrina. Then Julie Rogers for S5 is the opposite of Tiffany, downmarket and rough around the edges in a way Sabrina never was, and with a (forgive me) porno quality about her that would let the show truly go low-down in a way that aging Jaclyn and then toddler-mom Cheryl likely didn't want to do. More street than Sabrina, and more sex and skin than Sabrina. For a show that was getting on, it makes sense.

I do hate the "top school for models" though. What would've been so bad about "one in Los Angeles, one in San Francisco, and one in... New York/Chicago/Detroit" something like that?

Not be be THAT DLer, but why were there no angels of color? Mod Squad had a woman and POC and was earlier than Charlie? And I guess looking at the movies now, why hasn’t there been a trans Angel? Does Laverne do comedy?

by Anonymousreply 336May 15, 2020 3:06 AM

There were some black women in contention for some of the replacement Angels. Shari Belafonte and Jayne Kennedy were two of the better known ones who went far in contention for roles. Jayne was supposedly nixed for being too tall.

Susie Coelho, was in contention for the Julie Rogers role. She's of indian (as in india) decent. Some even reported she got the part, initially.

by Anonymousreply 337May 15, 2020 3:28 AM

Spelling got REALLY lucky with Cheryl Ladd - I think he he wasn't "hands on" when then started replacing the Angels. Didn't they pass on Michelle Pfeiffer when they were hiring Shelly Hack? I mean, how cool would it have been to have a major actress like Pfeiffer acting with Ladd and Smith?

by Anonymousreply 338May 17, 2020 12:29 AM

[quote]R329 could you imagine? They didn't have the decency to call Shelly in to let her go? She finds out from a reporter asking for a comment?

Costume designer Nolan Miller said Hack turned into “the bitch of the century” after 2 weeks on the job. EVERYONE on the show, according to him, wanted her canned.

So apparently they just skipped the niceties.

by Anonymousreply 341May 17, 2020 5:31 AM

It's funny that Nolan Miller was one that pushed Aaron Spelling to hire Hack. He loved that she wore clothes well and he could use nice clothes for her. The whole Charlie Girl perfume thing sort of sealed the deal because that could get additional publicity.

Pfeiffer would've been a better fit for the show. But obviously not getting hired was ultimately the best thing for her. She most likely wouldn't have had the career she had if she was on Charlie's Angels.

by Anonymousreply 342May 17, 2020 5:33 AM

R341 Filters before filters, lol.

by Anonymousreply 343May 17, 2020 5:59 AM

[quote] Pfeiffer would've been a better fit for the show.

Let’s face it, Michelle was more “graduated from a school for top models” than Ivy League intellectual.

by Anonymousreply 344May 17, 2020 6:06 AM

They were expecting Farrah back, so all of Cheryl's scenes in the first episode are by herself so Farrah could be edited in. She was hired as her little sister and they claimed there would be four Angels but likely they would have simply written Cheryl out if Farrah came back. But Cheryl really was the girl among women. There was belief that the role would go to Kim Basinger who was on the famous Angels in Chains episode and the tag had her working at the agency, She was also on a TV show called Dog and Cat that had just been cancelled but she told Spelling she was not going to play Fawcett's little sister. Hack was just a terrible choice. There was a lot of publicity that the role had gone to Barbara Bach. She was even on The Tonight Show but revealed she flunked her audition. Persis Khabhata from the Star Trek movie was also considered as was Susie Coelho. Any of them would have been better because Hack very clearly resembled Ladd and there was very little visual contrast. Barbara Carrera was offered the role but turned it down. Perhaps the most interesting candidate was Claudia Jennings, a Playboy Playmate of the Year. She reportedly gave a wonderful audition but Spelling didn't want to hire a former nude model.

Jaclyn Smith was on the Locher Room and she was asked to describe her co-stars off-camera

Kate Jackson - Cerebral, complex, intense

Farrah Fawcett - 8x10 glossy - All American, sweet quality, good girlfriend

Cheryl Ladd - Warm, approachable, fun & funny

Shelley Hack - East coast preppy, dignified, soft spoken, refined

Tanya Roberts - Sensual, unique, sensuality that radiated on screen

by Anonymousreply 348September 30, 2020 8:25 PM

I wonder why Jaclyn never stood up for Shelly? I mean, Jaclyn, David Doyle, and Cheryl had some clout and could have came to Shelly's defense when she was on the chopping block. Don't the stars of these shows have some degree of power? I remember on "Happy Days" Henry Winkler hated Roz Kelly, and suddenly no more "Pinky Tuscadaro"

by Anonymousreply 349October 1, 2020 3:06 AM

Shelly Hack and her east coast Boston sophisticated very late 70s style.

Who cancelled the show - ABC or Spelling? I wanted to see Cheryl, Tanya, and a NEW age. Maybe bring Shelly back...

by Anonymousreply 352October 3, 2020 7:17 AM

ABC, R352. The ratings had been in freefall since the departure of Kate Jackson and the introduction of Shelley Hack. Getting rid of Shelley and adding Tanya Roberts didn't help, so they pulled the plug.

by Anonymousreply 353October 4, 2020 12:45 PM

No way we are ever gonna see a "Charlies Angles" with the the remaining angels? I could see the girls passing the torch to the NEW 2021 Angels. I'm sure Kate Jackson won't do it, bitter old dyke

I liked Kate Jackson best because her name was Sabrina which made it hilarious when David Doyle, with his lisp, addressed her: "Thabrina! Thabrina!"

by Anonymousreply 358November 19, 2020 6:54 PM

1. Jaclyn Smith - the prettiest. 2. Cheryl Ladd - also very pretty, and I like the way she came in and did a great job of "replacing" Farrah, which was a difficult task 3. Shelly Hack - I didn't much care for her look, but there was something about her I liked. 4. Kate Jackson - meh. I guess she had a bit more acting chops than the others, but who watched this trash for the acting? 5. Farrah Fawcett - I hated her for taking so much attention away from the far more beautiful Jaclyn Smith, for being a shitty actress, and for leaving to make "Sunburn and "Saturn 3". 6. Tanya Roberts - I'd stopped watching by then, so I really can't judge her one way or the other.

Jackson was a beast and a nag offscreen, but you need contrast among an ensemble. She did come across as smart and funny. And the fact that she could act let her take on more fake personas in the investigations.

Neither Smith nor Fawcett read as especially intelligent. Those bimbos would never have solved a case on their own.

Back in the late 80s, People magazine did an article about the show and one of the producers (forget which one) said they wanted to do a reunion TV movie and would pay them a million bucks each to do it. He made it clear they were only interested in Kate, Farrah, Jaclyn and Cheryl and that they'd have to get at least three of those four to proceed. I bet Jaclyn and Cheryl would've been game and Kate and Farrah being the holdouts.

by Anonymousreply 362November 19, 2020 7:18 PM

I like the three original ones the best. It’s fun to watch the shows on the reboot stations that are playing so many old shows. Of the angels they added in later years the only one that was tolerable to me was Cheryl Ladd.

by Anonymousreply 363November 19, 2020 7:21 PM

What were the actresses’ salaries? I believe they were initially quite modest. Who got raises and when?
