[quote]We are closer to 2070 today than we are to 1970
WOW! Super-cool observation! You sound SMART.

We aren't closer to December 31st, 2070 yet.

By a matter of a few days, Mary.

You mean 11 months.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 3, 2020 10:10 PM |
What does that even mean?

70_80_90_00_10_2020 = 50 years
2020_30_40_50_60_70 = 50 years
It just feels like a real long early aughts. It doesn't feel that different. Like an old person recently told me, the the just goes by so fast.
Which makes me more scared about stuff that happened 50 years before I was born WW1 and 2. That really was very recently relatively speaking and we could all go back to it. When I was a kid it seemed like centuries ago but no, it's there, right on the back porch.

Fun fact: Cleopatra was born closer in time to the moon landings than to the building of the pyramids.

I like this.
My birthday is closer to WWI than my birthday is to today. I find this fascinating because I don’t feel like a fossil. I have no age-related illnesses. I have a full head of hair, though it is salt and pepper.
When I grew up, WWI was like the Stone Age. They had bi-planes, then. They fought with horses and some still used sabers. Color wasn’t invented yet and everything was still in black and white. The radio was hi-tech. Europe was ruled by Kings and Emperors. Etc. you get it, I think.
My Dad fought in WWII. Heck, everybody’s Dad fought in WWII, so, while WWII was in the past, it seemed more like the far past, while WWI seemed like ancient past.

My Dad did meet his grandmother, who was born before the civil war.
I met men who fought in WWI.
I have been doing genealogy research for a while now, and it’s made me realize that it can be very few generations to skip back to the beginning of America. Oh, plus, I got old. I think that gives one perspective that most people have to actually live, to really appreciate.
But, I otherwise had not really appreciated the passage of “deep time”.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
