Donnie Wahlberg gives IHOP server a $2000 tip on New Years Day
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (WTHR) — Actor Donnie Wahlberg made someone's year already.
On Jan. 1, Wahlberg dined at an IHOP in Illinois and left his server a big tip — $2,020.
His wife, Jenny McCarthy, posted the receipt on Twitter.
"... starting 2020 off like the amazing man he is," McCarthy wrote.
Walhberg wrote "Happy New Year" and "2020 Tip Challenge" at the bottom of the receipt.
Fans of the couple are loving the gesture.

I'd be more impressed if his wife hadn't posted it on Twitter. If the server had posted it that would be one thing, but posting it yourself looks like a grab for publicity.

isn't the recipient usually the one who posts about it so the giver doesn't look like a self congratulating asshole who did it for asspats rather than a selfless good deed?

And when you give, do not let your left hand know what your hand does.
In other words, don't brag about your gifts. It's not polite.

I still love these stories despite the drawbacks, publicity, etc. when I was still working, some friends and I left over the top tips for bartenders and waiters around the holidays. Not so grand to be on this level, but each of us would leave an extra hundred in our group. It's a great feeling to be able to do it.

It would have been more impressive if the waitress had posted this instead, and the two of them had kept quiet.. The fact that his wife posted it reeks of “look at what a good deed we did!” and wanting a pat on the back.

Jenny McCarthy is widely ridiculed and hated for being a rabid anti-vaxxer. I only recently found out she's been a spokesperson for an e-liquid company which sounds weird if she's so concerned about people's health. It actually sounds like she genuinely wants people to get hurt.
I remember liking her back in the day. Now she seems like a total loony.

Good for them. Their using their good fortune to be a blessing to others. To me, that's all that matters. The waiter is the beneficiary of the $2K. The bragging is just to make them fill good about themselves I guess.
I wish we heard about billionaires doing stuff like this. Then maybe people wouldn't have this eat the wealthy mentality so much of society has at the moment.
But many of them have created this culture themselves, by being evil and tight with $$$ and making themselves so inaccessible to the point their completely unreachable to the general public, on such an extreme level. I guess that's why we've seen the rise of Bernie Sanders and AOC and the squad members.
But still a nice gesture by donnie and jenny.

In the late 90s my roommate's girlfriend was a waitress at this restaurant in Malibu. She waited on Cher and her sister.
They got salads, shrimp cocktail and a bottle of wine. The bill came out to $175, they left $300.
You would think being a diva she would be rude and a lousy tipper. She said that Cher was really friendly, just two sisters enjoying lunch.
I guess you never can tell...

I don't think you put your tips into a "pool" where everyone who works there gets an equal share.
At most chain restaurants, you share a percentage of your total sales for the night--paid out to the manager when you check out. They don't know what your tips are because they'll never know the cash part.

There are several restaurants where the server doesn't get the tip immediately. They have to turn it over to management, who records it for tax purposes and then gives it back (when they feel like it). Many servers had brought lawsuits due to this procedure.

Every waiter who receives a tip from a credit card doesn't have to report it--it's already in the system.
The only under-reporting of tips that you can do is on cash tips. On the computer, when you check out for your shift, the machine will ask you how much you received in CASH. If you put a suspiciously low number, the machine will warn you that your tips are less than typical--so most waiters will revise their stated tips (the total), so that it's about 15% of your sales receipts for the night.
The managers don't "take" your cash tips in the middle of your shift--you might need to make cash change for a customer. You sit down with the manager, when you check out, and they tell you how much you owe them for everyone's tips (based on your sales total). Then, either you hand cash over to them (if most of your tips were in cash), or they will give you cash (if most of your tips were on credit cards). It's math.
This is how is was in chain restaurants 20 years ago when I was in college (and waiting tables part time). I'm sure chain restaurants haven't become more primitive since then.

This is like an old Jack Benny sketch. A bum asks Jack (who if you don't know was notoriously cheap, on his show), for a dime for coffee.
Jack gives him 50 cents and precedes to spend the rest of the show congratulating himself on that.
And to give Mr Benny credit, he keeps up with the gag through the years. Like a couple of years later he meets the bum again and introduces himself and reminds the guy how he generously gave him 50 cents when he only asked for a dime

I worked for a rich guy years ago, who would tip in check form. If he really liked the service and the waiter, he'd right them a check for $10K because it was the most you could give without it being taxed.
He had a massive fortune too. Lots if art word in his home, and lots of top of the line real estate to go with it. Very generous man. I still see him from time to time. But the way he tipped is the way to go if you really want to be generous about it.
