What do you think the world will look like in 2030?

[italic]The Times[/italic]'s article this weekend poses this interesting question; what says the DL?

My take is that there will be a major climate event that will alter the way we think about climate change, something like a Nor'Easter on carbon-emission-fueled steroids dumping dozens of feet of snow and reaching as far inland as the Mississippi river, followed by temperatures falling well below zero, basically shutting the Eastern Seaboard down for a month. Tens of thousands of people will perish in the cold (for lack of oil trucks to get through drifts reaching third and fourth stories in height), starvation (I read somewhere that major cities like New York and Boston only have about 3 days worth of food on hand or within reach of the majority of people living there), and the inevitable crime wave that will accompany the anarchy of incapacitated and overwhelmed first responders, all exacerbated by the lack of emergency planning at both the Federal and state levels.

Of course, even then, the Republicans will continue to deny the crisis. At least some of them will die, too.

It even possible the movies, music and TV will be ten years worse?

by Anonymousreply 1December 29, 2019 6:19 PM

Probably worse than it is now. We'll probably have changed our way of producing and consuming. At least, I hope so.

Quiet.

Methane bubbles deep within a defrosting tunda burst during the unusually hot Siberian winter of 2028 as world governments ignore all the dire predictions and warnings of scientists. Frantic, futile efforts to slow the resulting heating of the atmosphere fail throughout the spring and summer while all life dependent upon oxygen dies.

I think 2030 is too soon for the effects of climate change to be generally accepted by everybody, but I bet when the people of 2050 look back, they’ll say that hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Sandy were the beginning of a pattern of climate change-related stronger storms.

I think the way climate change will evidence itself will be slowly at first, and then some large-scale, dramatic events, such as large amounts of methane released from the sea floor or Siberian/Alaskan permafrost; or perhaps a large calving of ice from Greenland or Antarctica.

I once read that, if an ice chunk is currently in the water, and it melts, it will not raise the ocean water level; however, if the ice chunk is currently on land, and it melts, it will raise the ocean water level.

A problem with a large ice melt from the surface of Greenland is not just the rise of the ocean water level, but it will also mean a large release of cold freshwater into the Atlantic. This might “shutdown” the normal ocean current that circulates warm water from Africa to the Americas, then up the US east coast as the Gulf Stream, then over to Europe. Without the Gulf Stream, both the Eastern US and Europe will be much colder. Europe in particular. It’s much further north than it sometimes seems. This will cause a slew of other biological problems with ocean organisms.

A new electronic currency arises that has nothing to do with wealth, but doing good deeds.

Billionaires form alliances with nonprofits to form a clearinghouse to vet these deeds, how much they’re worth, and to find individuals or groups that would be tasked to take care of elderly, clean a park, etc., sort of like how Uber works. Instead of accruing currency, your social status is dependent on giving it all away. The currency is only good for food, housing and immediate health needs. other economies form based on it , inspiring children into doing good deeds for electronics and toys. Benevolent organizations could seek funding the same way future derivatives are used today because investors would get a cut as well.

There are a series of checks and balances to curb bad behavior.

There is a ‘mark of the beast’ soon, people can see through how many times you’ve lied and if youre a truthful person worthy of doing business with, a ”mark” placed on your forehead using virtual reality. AI to scour your entire past transactions and sites like Glassdoor, etc. Of course There is an initial hesitancy of the public to share this depth of information, but if left blank, people simply won’t trust you. That somehow would be worse if people could look through a lens and see NO mark on your forehead...

DL eldergays will be ten years older, and still looking for 17-22 year old hole.

A lot of flooding in Oceanside cities. A lot more drought and desert cities in need of water.

Globalization comes to a grinding halt. It’s simply too expensive or prohibitive to ship things overseas. Everything becomes local again. There are a series of life threatening diseases and viruses that hit agriculture and people Feel safer growing their own food.

Somewhere in the near future, there’s a 10 year “still”. Mass production ceases as we know it and people make their own clothing and belongings. There are no batteries! It’s pedal power, wind or solar. There’s something the size of a large paint can using nanometers that can be wound like a watch coil and expends energy, light and heat from a crank on the top. Eventually they figure out how to power cars with them but that will take awhile.

by Anonymousreply 8December 29, 2019 9:57 PM

R8, you forgot to mention the massive famines and epidemics that would accompany the “still.” Billions would die, almost certainly including you and me.

By 2030, in most of the world, “democracy” and “pluralism” will be thought of as quaint, old-fashioned concepts from a bygone era. Almost every major country on Earth will be in the grip of nationalist authoritarianism, and all minorities - racial, sexual, religious - will be engaged in an existential struggle.

by Anonymousreply 10December 29, 2019 10:14 PM

I don't know about 2030, but at some point during the 2020s there will be a massive economic crash. Despite strong numbers, we are currently reaching a breaking point. The surging cost of living coupled with stagnant wages means people are relying on credit more than ever and this is unsustainable. Even Forbes is predicting a major economic meltdown at some point within the next 5 to 7 years. Complicating this will be growing automation will mean growing unemployment Basically.......things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. I think this will also see a further push away from globalization and in some countries a further political push to the right.

Global warming doesn’t exist! It’s a lie from the liberal media!

by Anonymousreply 12December 29, 2019 10:47 PM

I think many large cities will be uninhabitable, from attacks to the water supply, or nerve gas, or intentional spread of virus, or computer hacking which will shut down the electric grid. It wouldn't be that hard to take down NYC now, if someone was that intent on doing it.

[quote]It even possible the movies, music and TV will be ten years worse?

Of course it's possible, but I don't think it's inevitable. TV has gotten much, much better in the last 20 years (but I had to go back that far, to the pre-Mad Men/Breaking Bad/Six Feet Under era as the base reference point) thanks to diversification in media (by which I mean, HBO, Netflix, Amazon Prime and the also-rans). Music is what music is; and movies, I fear, will get far, far worse because everything is now driven by the global market which portends nothing but special effects, superheroes and car crashes. The days of a "little" film gaining traction are long gone.

Of course, what used to be "little" films are now web series on YouTube, which occasionally get picked up for distribution on TV, that portends the entertainment scene ten years hence; the democratization of filmed entertainment is a good thing. It's also bringing us unwatchable dreck that should have never been made.

Technologically, movies are going to have to go a more immersive route, with theaters already pitching more than surround sound and seats with built in vibrators (but I can hardly wait for this advance to come to adult theaters.. oh, wait. Nevermind). One theater company was belching about new ambient lighting on the sides of the screen that was somehow supposed to make you feel more involved, which is technology that harkens back to the 1950s when our parents and grandparents were told that you should have a light on in the room when watching television to somehow improve the experience of staring at a tiny black and white 7-inch screen. I suppose that the truly immersive experience will come when holography combines with AI and becomes realistically interactive, but I don't see this within a decade.

tl;dr: more of the same.
