R2 - Linda's not amazing. Check her Wikipedia page. She's the hanger-on in the relationship. Sarah's been the financial support for Linda's "independent" career. I'm not a big fan of Sarah. She's a terrible actress. But it seems she's made a lot of smart financial decisions. It also seems that Sarah is the parent who's present for her kids.

I like Linda's musical style
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 28, 2019 12:46 AM |
Sorry, but I don't like Sara. She was the one who pushed for and spearheaded the rebooted Rosanne, even though she had to know Roseanne was not mentally up for such a high profile gig and would implode. She then worked to push Roseanne out and continue the show, instead of just letting it die. Regardless of how one feels about Roseanne, the person, that show was HERS, and Sara owes her fame to Roseanne's brilliance in the 1990s. Yes, Roseanne obviously is having problems now, but there is something called loyalty. She might not have wanted to defend Roseanne, but she didn't need to work against her, either. I therefore hope Linda takes her to the cleaners.

Isn't her family why Sara left The Talk? Or was that just smoke screen for CBS didn't want her anymore?

by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 28, 2019 1:08 AM |
R15 I totally agree. She threw Roseanne under the bus. Roseanne was always saying some whack ass shit on Twitter and did seem out if her mind, but 90s Roseanne was nothing like that. 90s Roseanne faught for equality and against bigots who would harass Leon for being gay.
Unless she was caught saying some real racist shit. Even the lie blaming Ambien seemed messed up. Now if Sara saw something, like Roseanne becoming more and more racist and supporting Trump, then I stand corrected and would side with Sara. If that tweet was indicative of some real racism that we can't see, and Sara knew that and saw it as an opportunity to dump the crazy racist then that's different.

R24 I disagree, I've tried to watch The Conners a few times, and it is clear that something is missing, Roseanne. It is like if you watch an episode of The George Burns Show, the show where he tried to continue The Burns and Allen Show without Gracie. The show was still entertaining, but it was missing the heart of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 28, 2019 1:21 AM |
I love The Conners.
They are making it work despite an awful - but awfully predictable- implosion of the star.
And I agree with r24: the show was always an ensemble, and they’re making episodes now that are of the calibre of Roseanne in the early 90s.
It’s the only my reboot I’ve bought into.
R27, I somewhat agree - except that I think we’re supposed to feel the heart is gone and watch how everyone who’s left gradually fills in its place, knowing there will always be an emptiness.
And I think Linda Perry’s hat alone is grounds for divorce.

R23 They were already paid to do a second season of the show, so the network was not going to let Gilbert start fresh from scratch with a completely new concept. Especially since the reboot was ABC's biggest hit that season. That's not how it works.
I have no idea why anyone thought hiring Roseanne for a prime time show given her recent viewpoints was a great idea, but that's blame that needs to go around to not just Gilbert and the other producers, but to ABC as well. But no one is to blame for the Jarett tweet but Roseanne. If she had simply apologized, it might have been better, but she dug in her heels with several different excuses. Now of course, she says ABC had it in for her all along, and it was a premediated firing.

Does this mean she'll be back on her The View rip-off show?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 28, 2019 1:38 AM |
R31 Actually, Roseanne has stated, and no has disputed it, that she told ABC execs as soon as she realized the issue that she would apologize and go on any programs they desired so as to apologize. It was ABC, backed up by others such as Gilbert who said that wouldn't be enough. ABC was willing to just end the show and pay them out for the second season, so she didn't have to continue the show. She could have taken the payday and used it as seed money to create her own show.
Also, I must say I've always felt some sympathy for Roseanne about the tweet, because even though I am a political junkie, I honestly had no idea Valerie Jarrett identified as black, so her excuse was believable. I assumed Jarrett was an "ethnic" white. She doesn't look any less white than any number of Italian or Greek Americans, or my relatives with Native American ancestry. In fact, as for coloring, she doesn't appear much different than Roseanne, herself.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 28, 2019 2:02 AM |
R40 I can't defend the ape balls comment, but it was also made before the show. Therefore ABC and the studio should have already been aware of that tweet. I've worked for a social media management firm, before we would take on a new client one of my jobs was to go through and read all their past tweets/posts for issues. They knew she was crazy. You don't get into bed with a crazy person and then feign surprise when they do something crazy.

Beautiful
[quote]I started writing it when I was working with Alecia, but it just wasn’t done. For some reason, I kept putting it off. There was something about the lyric that was troubling to me, because it was so not what I felt. When the words “I am beautiful” came out, it was so shocking to me to say that because I don’t feel that way. I was still in denial about this positive message that I could possibly be saying. That’s why I changed the second one to “You are beautiful” and the third one to “We are beautiful” — because I couldn’t bear to keep saying “I am beautiful.” Alecia never recorded it. She may have heard it when I was writing it. I can slightly remember her asking for it and I said, “No, it’s not the right song for you.” I’m not sure. I knew it wasn’t finished. After it was finished, Christina showed up. I said, “No management and no entourages allowed in my studio.” She was very vulnerable, and said, “Can you play me something to break the ice?” I decided to play “Beautiful” for her because that was the song I had been working on. I could hear her getting closer and closer to the piano. When I was done, she said, “Can you write the words to that and give me a demo of it? I want that for my album.” I decided to let her sing it, so she’s standing there in my studio with the lyrics in her hands and then said to this friend she brought along, “Don’t look at me,” in that little whispery voice. I knew I was going to keep that on the record, and I knew she was the right person for the song. I realized, “Oh, she’s insecure. She’s one of those beautiful people who’s got everything but is super insecure. Okay, this song is hers.” She wanted to re-record it and said, “No, you’re going to over-sing. I wanted to keep it really basic, really simple.” She was like, “Oh, I can sing this so much better. Please, can I just have one shot at it?” I literally let it play for maybe 30 seconds and she comes in and she just goes for it. I just turned it off. She’s like, “What?” And I said, “It’s not happening. You’re already ruining the song. This [original] vocal is perfect because it’s flawed. You gotta understand that flaws are great. This is a beautiful song because no one has ever heard you like this.” It proved to be exactly that. She grew from that song.
I love Miss Aguilera. She gets a bad rap. She was always on our side and she's so freaking gifted.

I am a former songwriter, and I never fucking that crap when someone says "oh, it was the scratch vocal that was used. It was perfect. Blah blah blah." That is absolute nonsense. IT NEVER EVER HAPPENS. First of all, you try a bunch of different mics to make sure that you're using the right one for the song and the singer's tone, and you have to get recording levels, and it takes a while to get the right music mix in the singer's headphones. That whole "it was a rough vocal" shit? It never happens. It is creating a myth, nothing more.

R69 is wrong. I don't know what he has against Aguilera or Perry - but there are hundreds of examples of demo vocals becoming the final release. Roy Orbison's version of I Drove All Night is just one. Celine's My Heart Will Go On is another. Linda Perry says herself that Christina went back and added things to her original vocal of Beautiful, at R55. And there's no such thing as a former songwriter. You either are or you aren't.
Orbison never recorded I Drove All Night. They built a recording around a demo of the tune that he sang years earlier. Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You was done in one take and it was the first take. That doesn't make it a scratch vocal. It makes her an incredible vocalist. Many people who were present that night told the same story. Long before Whitney died. She did more than one take, but they used the first one. Naturally the studio was ready for her.
Karen Carpenter's last song was a demo vocal. She only recorded a rough working vocal so the instrumentation could be worked out and she would have recorded her vocal again at a later date. Many posthumous recordings are taken off people's computers or home recording equipment. It does happen all the time.

Apparently they have worked out a custody agreement for the hats
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 28, 2019 11:44 PM |
Yes, R72, I stand corrected. You are right that some posthumous songs use guide vocals for the finished product, but that is mostly because the singer is no longer alive to sing it again. I have no doubt that Whitney's first take of I Will Always Love You was the best and the one that was used, but I guarantee the it was not just a spontaneous "hey let me learn this song on the fly, and oh, is this mic plugged in...?" I'm certain the headphone mix was perfected, and the proper mic was plugged in, and, if she were in the studio, she had already learned the song. So, yes, sometimes first vocal passes are the best, but not SPONTANEOUS vocal passes when the singer doesn't even know the song. Can you hear a song once, then sing it back perfectly? No one can,
And how can you say there is no such thing as a former songwriter? It's not like being an alcoholic. I used to write songs for a living and had publishing deals, but I stopped enjoying it years ago and stopped writing. I haven't touched a guitar or piano in years. But according to you, I'm still a songwriter? It's a profession, not a genetic marker.

[quote]Linda Perry wrote this with the intention of having it as her comeback single, but when she played it to Christina Aguilera, she hadn't yet recorded it. Perry recalls in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "I played it to Christina who immediately fell in love with it, so I gave her the chance to demo it. Her first vocal take, reading the lyrics from a piece of paper in my living room, were so fulfilling that we used that version on the single. It had a very raw feeling, which I liked, but Christina wanted it re-done to technical perfection. I said no and it took me 7 months of arguments until she finally agreed."
[quote]The gay community embraced this song. The video shows a cross-dressing man and a homosexual kiss. It was honored by the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its positive portrayal of alternative lifestyles. Linda Perry is gay.
[quote]This won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal, and Aguilera performed the song on the show. A week before The Grammys, Janet Jackson created lots of controversy when her breast was exposed during the halftime show. CBS, who also broadcast the Super Bowl, ran a 5 minute delay on The Grammy awards to make sure nothing like that happened. They almost had to use the delay when Aguilera accepted her award - she was wearing a very revealing dress and looked like she was in danger of popping out. She made a few comments about it before accepting the award and thanking Perry for writing the song.
[quote]During this song a faint rhythm track can be heard in the background. This was caused by headphone bleed, which is sound leaking from her headphone monitor into the microphone. Dave Pensado, who mixed the song claimed: "The song was about being beautiful and honest in every way. That bleed is honest. It was one of the most honest vocal performances I had ever heard. It was actually the scratch vocal."

PS: regarding Celine Dion's "one take" vocal. One of my best friends is a successful writer, and has had several songs recorded by Celine. Her routine is that she sings the song several times in succession, and then the engineer listens to all the different versions and uses the best version to get the final version. It is called "comping." Celine is a technical marvel, and probably nailed the song in the first take, and they just needed a line or two from other versions, but the key difference is she came to the studio already knowing the song. It wears me out when I read shit like Perry claiming that Christina's vocal was a scratch vocal. It is clearly an attempt to create a myth around the song, but it is not a believable one.

I know Celine and have worked with her. And once again you're wrong. Only about My Heart Will Go On, which she learned and recorded a demo of with James Horner on piano. In a few hours, one night. This demo is the version you hear in the movie. Celine did not like the song and thought nothing more of it. James Cameron did not want a pop vocal in his movie. Things changed when the studio added pressure to have an additional marketing advantage. Celine recorded a studio version of the song for her own album, Let's Talk About Love, AFTER her demo version from the Titanic soundtrack was already a huge hit. She had previously recorded Somewhere Out There, another Horner composition, though the song eventually went to Linda Ronstadt, as the bigger star at that time. But Horner never forgot the sound of Celine's gorgeous overtones and he wanted her to sing his "love song" for Titanic.
I hate liars, especially those who think that Sheryl Crow is an example of a great singer. R83 may have published a song, but he knows nothing about singing.
[quote]I was in a suite with a piano at Caesars Palace. [Horner] started to play the song. With all the respect that I have for James — poor him, this guy is looking above us right now — he is not the greatest singer. I was making this sign like, “This is not possible.” René [Angélil, Dion’s late husband] stopped him: “James, James, James. Listen to me. You’re not doing justice to the song right now. I’m going to make a deal with you: Let’s have Céline make a demo.” I wanted to choke my husband. Because I didn’t want to do it! I just came out of “Because You Loved Me,” and then “Beauty and the Beast” was, like, huge. Why do we need to break our nose?
[quote]Mottola: I remember going into the studio that night, around 9 p.m. We had all gone out to dinner.
[quote]Dion: I was mad! I don’t feel good. I have belly pains. My girly days are starting to happen. I’m going to have a black coffee with sugar -- which I never have on my studio days because it speeds up my vibrato. But I do that. And [Horner] is explaining to me what is the movie all about. He said, “Just think about that and do it.” I’m like (sarcastically), “All right, thanks. Thanks a lot.”
[quote]Mottola: It was myself, Céline, René, Jim Horner and Polly Anthony, who was then the president of Epic Records. Everything was kind of calm and quiet. Céline went in the booth and turned the lights down, and we could just faintly see her face. And she laid down this vocal -- nonstop, OK? One take. We were all getting chills.
[quote]Dion: They’re all crying. And they said, “We’re done.” I said, “OK, well, I’m glad that you liked the demo.” Horner said, “We might not have to do it again.” I said, “What are you talking about?”
[quote]Franglen: I did a decent mix. And James Horner carried around a cassette for weeks on weeks on weeks, waiting for the right time to play it for Cameron. He wanted him to be in a good mood.
[quote]Dion: I didn’t think that James Cameron is just going to buy this thing. James Cameron didn’t want to have a song in his movie. “My movie is big enough, I don’t need something bigger, I don’t need any singer.” And I don’t blame him. But Horner says, “I’m not going to tell you who sang the song. Just please give me a favor and listen just one time.”
[quote]Walter Afanasieff (co-producer, “My Heart Will Go On”): I’ve never said this before, but I never met James Horner until we stood onstage together at the Grammys. I came into the process from the first point that they decided to make a big radio single. There was no version existing except for a tiny little piano vocal demo that Céline had done with Horner. To be very honest, I didn’t really get it. I thought it was a very simple song that just meandered. It was a little dreary. Epic Records called me and said, “Well, do what you can.”
[quote]Mottola: It was a song that propelled by now almost a billion dollars in [music] sales. Céline is a very gracious, generous person. And has done nothing but be thankful. Unlike many artists.

I have to say I'm not so comfortable with people describing a woman of color as looking "dirty." Or are you guys referring to some other aspect of her appearance? Cuz I honestly just don't see it.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 29, 2019 1:59 AM |
That Four Non-Blondes hit she had is one of the worst songs I've ever heard on the radio, and the way she shrieks it like it's so MEANINGFUL is a big reason why.
And she doesn't look dirty, she looks vulgar, in a way that transcends racial or ethnic background.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 29, 2019 2:10 AM |
All right, now I'm feeling guilty about the vulgar comment. But she has no taste. In the video for the hit she looked appalling.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 29, 2019 2:14 AM |
4 Non Blondes was an opening act for Prince during the height of their popularity. They played their hit song twice and were still booed off the stage. After a few minutes, Linda came back to the mic to apologize that her band wasn’t Prince and she said a few more sarcastic, nasty things before being booed offstage again.

Gilbert chose to use the stage surname of her mother’s first husband, Gilbert wasn’t even the guy’s real name. Very obviously done as said above because her adopted half-sister (Melissa Gilbert) was still well-known on TV when Sara was starting out. I am not sure how much judgment I can place on her as she was so young it sounds like someone else’s decision, but it’s cunty.

Roseanne was batshit crazy before the Jarrett tweet.
Y'all act like that was the only thing she said or did. She had a lot of fucked up tweets. She did a photo essay dressed as Hitler putting cookies into the oven.
I'm mostly on TeamABC and Team Gilbert re: Roseanne's firing, and am sad Roseanne's mental health collapse led to it. She was never really PC, but she never dove into some of the crazy areas she did more recently.
BUT ABC and Gilbert also knew before the launch of the reboot what and who they were dealing with, so they do have some level of culpability, too. Everyone was willing to look the other way to make money. Until they weren't.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | December 29, 2019 3:21 PM |
I’ll go you one further r118. ABC and Sara knew Roseanne would implode and had The Conners concept locked and loaded for the inevitable firing. Then it became the Sara show starring Sara, written by Sara, directed by Sara, costume design by Sara, catering and craft by Sara.
She’s from a showbiz family, she knew what she was doing. It’s underhanded, but fuck Roseanne. She deserves everything she gets.

After seeing r101 I have a question for lesbians.
If any of you are or know successful lesbians is there as much a tendency to go for beautiful but empty partners as straight guys do?
Do lesbians go for the trophy wife?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | December 29, 2019 4:41 PM |
Will they address this on The Talk?
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 29, 2019 5:22 PM |
R121, I don't think most lesbians will go after a trophy. Lesbians are women, and like straight women, lesbians tend to value kindness, warmth, creativity, and a sense of humor over looks in a partner. (In straight society, you'll find plenty of pretty women paired with chubby, "ruggedly handsome" men, even when the men aren't rich.) Of course, there are always exceptions; Rosie went after a trophy last time, and it didn't end well. A straight man will tolerate a "hawt" woman he can't stand, even if she spends all his money and sleeps with the poolboy, if he thinks that his friends and strangers will be jealous of him because he gets to have sex with her. A woman (neither straight nor gay) won't tolerate an annoying partner. (Of course there are some exceptions here, too, there is a small percentage of women who marry assholes because they are rich or famous.)
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 29, 2019 6:48 PM |
I am not surprised that so many here are sympathetic to Roseanne and believe Gilbert to be somewhat at fault for the firing. I was disappointed that Gilbert allowed Leah and Holly to be fired from The Talk because of Sharon but I understood she sided with the best business decision. (I stopped watching though). She made the same pragmatic choice with Roseanne as did every actor/staff member who returned after the firing. Sara ensured they all maintained employment. Yes ABC and Sara took a chance with Roseanne but Roseanne is the person at fault. Also Roseanne was not cheated out of compensation for the show.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 29, 2019 8:01 PM |
I agree R124. I think that Roseanne was fired too hastily, but this was not some grande scheme from Sara to take over the show. No doubt her increased involvement on The Connors led to her leaving The Talk and perhaps her breakup with Perry.
Also the Roseanne reboot had Wanda Sykes as a consulting producer and Whitney Cummings running the show. THEY quit immediately after Roseanne's tweet, and that, more than anything influenced what happened next with the show. I don't see The Connors as being overly centered on Darlene anyway. Some people just hate Gilbert for being unattractive.

"two of the ugliest women in show biz."
Ain't it the truth. Both of them are hideous. It's so ridiculous that on "The Connors" Darlene is considered someone to be lusted over. Guys hit on her in bars and when she briefly worked as waitress a guy wanted her to "sit on his lap." And of course hot Ben wants her bod. Are all these men vision impaired? In reality no woman who looks like Sara Gilbert would get much attention from men. In fact, no man would ever look at her twice.

I fingered Suzanne Somers in the waterfall of the Bellagio. Her husband liked my dress and dared me to go in. It was a pretty orange silk and I had only a thong underneath. I held up my heels and went in and Suzanne came laughing right in after. With no more prompting she started kissing me, her tongue was all over my lips and neck and a bit forcefully in my mouth. I was excited by her hunger and even more by her husband and the security men watching. Alan had his phone out and I held out my hand to say no. By then I was fingering up inside her wrap dress. (we had met earlier that evening after her show - we played baccarat) Suzanne was free with me, she is quite wrinkled but had beautiful breasts for a 75 year old? Not sure - this was 4 years ago. She was wet and warm, her nipples were hard, I was wet from the fountain with warmer juice starting to flow. Anyway it lead back to their room - I got a bit freaked out though they were a lot of fun and we only drank champagne. Alan has a very large cock and a tiny tan line. Soft he must be 8 inches. He only penetrated his wife that night, but I could have had more. So, later Alan flew me to Palm Springs and I guess they had a more prepared plan. We had a beautiful 3 days and nights. Alan did join in but Suzanne and I spent a lot of time alone together. She is a brilliant woman. Very pretty without makeup and so sensual. She sang a song with my name in it to me. Her body is not wonderful for 55 but she was so tanned, smooth and responsive. They did ask me to sign a non disclosure, but they was not forceful. I can't say more. Suzanne is a beautiful woman and loves the gays. A lot of them work for her. There is more to the story, but I must leave you in suspense.

I always thought David on Roseanne was kind of cute and could have done better than Darlene, and found it a bit implausible he would date her, but then again he was meant to be not confident, they lived next door to each other, it was a small town and the elder siblings of each family were dating each other so David and Darlene kind of fell in with each other.
To find out some years later that they were dating in real life was mind boggling. Incidentally if Sara Gilbert was not aware that she was a lesbian during that period, I’m sure a sizeable number of Roseanne’s viewers could have let her know. She was so gay that I was sure for a time that they would write Darlene as a lesbian.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | January 1, 2020 1:00 AM |
If only Darlene had been made a lesbian from the get go. It would have made for a lot of interesting situations. I always thought David was dumb as a brick for having someone as unattractive and unpleasant as Darlene as a girlfriend. I always thought somebody should have knocked some sense into him after his awful, co-dependent relationship.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 1, 2020 1:22 AM |
The character of Darlene did seem gay. When Molly and her sister moved into the house next door, Darlene and Molly had a bit of a Jo and Blair dynamic. Darlene had more chemistry with Molly than she had with David.
I wonder if Gilbert came out to Roseanne. Before the last season of the show, Roseanne said she wanted to make a main character gay. There was a rumor that she had wanted to make the character of DJ gay, but the actor, Michael Fishman, didn't want to do it. Around that time, I remember reading a magazine article that featured an interview with Roseanne, Metcalfe, and Gilbert. During that interview, Roseanne proclaimed, "I'm a lesbian!"
R156, we got it the 5th time you told us. You think the actress who plays Darlene is unattractive, and thus, unloveable. Are you jealous that you weren't dating David/Galecki? Get the fuck over it.

I have a Sara Gilbert story!
I was in LA on biz and staying in West Hollywood. Had to go to a mall to get a piece of camera equipment. Went to a mall in Hollywood (can't remember name) and it was absolutely impossible to find an exit. So, I'm stumbling around looking for an escape, when I find myself on an escalator with Sara Gilbert and her kid.
I immediately started giggling when I saw her standing behind me (my standard response to seeing any celebrity.) She just stared daggers at me. She was scary! I hopped off the escalator and got away from her, giggling madly.
I still didn't know how to get out of the mall. Everywhere I went to look for an exit--there was Sara and her kid! The mall was almost completely empty so there was no hiding the fact that I was in their presence. And every time I'd see them, I'd start giggling again--harder and harder each time I'd run into them. It was ridiculous.
Finally, I went into a Macy's, thinking there would be an escape from the mall from there. But there wasn't! As I was leaving the store, there was Sara again, and I dove under a clothes rack to avoid her.
A Macy's staffer pointed me toward an elevator to get out of the mall. I raced to it, and got there just as the door was closing. Well! Who was in the elevator? Sara Gilbert and her kid.
I busted out laughing, and said: "I'm sure you think I'm stalking you, but, honestly, I'm just trying to get out of this damn mall and I keep running into you." Her expression didn't change at all: Furious and staring daggers at me. Didn't say a word. I stepped away from the elevator and let it leave without me.
This was a few years after the first Roseanne show--before The Talk. So she was kind of a has-been. But acted like A STAR!
