Guardian interview with Alex Pettyfer on the set of the first film he's directing

"[By age] 22, Pettyfer had developed a reputation for arrogance, mostly from reports from the set of the teen sci-fi flick I Am Number Four. Relations between Pettyfer and the film’s director broke down: the CEO of DreamWorks had to intervene. Then Magic Mike was dogged by reports of a feud with Tatum – by Pettyfer’s admission, over rent he owed Tatum’s friend and refused to pay “because life is so much more” than money. Pettyfer denies his bad reputation was deserved, saying that he was afraid to be himself on an unfriendly set."

He also says that the reason he was so notoriously difficult on the set of I Am Number Four was because he was working with a "male-dominant crew": “When I talk about the male dominance on that film it’s that I feel like, with a little bit more of a feminine energy around, there would have been more nurturing and nursing towards me as a young man carrying the weight of pressures that I didn’t understand fully.”

[quote]rent he owed Tatum’s friend and refused to pay “because life is so much more” than money.

Creep.

by Anonymousreply 1December 27, 2019 4:54 AM

Oh, good lord. Him again?

He was cute enough in MAGIC MIKE, but completely overshadowed by the charisma and/or sex appeal of most of the other men in the cast. Let alone professionalism. He sounded like a childish douche at the time.

If he were a woman in Hollywood, there's no way he would have gotten the second, third, or fourth chances to redeem himself and his career.

by Anonymousreply 2December 27, 2019 4:57 AM

Wow, he sure turned out ugly. What happened to his face?

by Anonymousreply 3December 27, 2019 5:03 AM

Here's the old story about Pettyfer not paying Tatum's friend rent money:

[quote] Alex Pettyfer has revealed the reason behind falling out with Magic Mike co-star Channing Tatum: paying the rent.

[quote] The 25-year-old actor, who didn’t return for Magic Mike XXL, spoke to Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast about the feud between him and Tatum.

[quote] Pettyfer had been renting an apartment in New York through a friend of Tatum’s and, following the death of a family member, hadn’t paid rent for four months. “I all of a sudden got a very negative email from Channing, rightfully so, saying, ‘Don’t fuck my friends. You owe money. Pay the fucking money. Don’t be a clown,’” he said.

[quote] Pettyfer was angered and then refused to pay anything. “By the end of it, I just basically said, ‘Fuck them. What is money when life is so much more?’ and, ‘I’m not dealing with this, and I’m not paying.’”

[quote] Pettyfer wishes he had paid but also believes that Tatum had it in for him. When his name was suggested by Steven Soderbergh as an initial idea for the role, Tatum had dismissed him because of his reputation for being difficult. Pettyfer said he thinks that Tatum saw him as “a risk”.

[quote] Pettyfer believes that Tatum “was just looking for an excuse not to like [him]”.

[quote] The actor, who broke out in kids adventure Stormbreaker at the age of 16, has previously criticised Hollywood as a “socially disgusting” place.

[quote] “Being an actor is like being in prison,” he told VMAN magazine in 2011. “You go, you serve your time, you try and replicate Johnny Depp’s career and then you move to Paris.”

[quote] After Magic Mike, Pettyfer’s work has been limited to small roles in The Butler and a lead in teen flop Endless Love. He’ll next be seen with Kevin Spacey in Elvis & Nixon. He claims the Tatum experience has caused him to leave his “immaturity” behind.

R3 Brit men are notorious for aging horribly.

The next time Alex makes another one of his shit films, they should "forget" his paycheck and when he asks for it, just say "there's more to life than money."

by Anonymousreply 5December 27, 2019 5:10 AM

[quote]Pettyfer was angered and then refused to pay anything. “By the end of it, I just basically said, ‘Fuck them. What is money when life is so much more?’ and, ‘I’m not dealing with this, and I’m not paying.’”

...did he seriously think this interview was going to redeem him somehow?

by Anonymousreply 6December 27, 2019 5:14 AM

He was only 22 when he did Magic Mike. Everyone else on set was a decade or more older than him.

He was just a young douche. He is talented, though, so hopefully he will be redeemed now that he's older and hopefully has some maturity.

I didn't know he was British.

by Anonymousreply 9December 27, 2019 5:20 AM

Why should he have to pay that douche Tatum Channing? Tatum has millions more than him.

by Anonymousreply 10December 27, 2019 5:22 AM

R8 they are but let's not pretend 22 is the same as 32 maturity-wise.

by Anonymousreply 13December 27, 2019 5:25 AM

LOOK AT HIS FACE......dead eyes

by Anonymousreply 14December 27, 2019 5:26 AM

He's not going to make a a comeback if this is his attitude. He has to do the whole "I was an arrogant asshole, but I've changed" admission with the press. In this he sounds like he's aware he was an arrogant asshole, but he won't stay it out loud... and he refuses to admit anything was his own fault.

by Anonymousreply 15December 27, 2019 5:37 AM

I am so confused, what does a death of a some random relative have to do with paying rent? He let 4 months of rent get in the way a nice payout for Magic Mike XXL. He really is an idiot, that should have respected that fact that Channing was at a point in his career when he could cobble together enough money to make his movie dream a reality, I wouldn't fuck with someone like that especially with the amount of buzz that movie got even before the release. I think he was spending above his means which account for his shifty ways with the landlord.

by Anonymousreply 16December 27, 2019 5:44 AM

Why wasn't the production paying for his rent in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 17December 27, 2019 5:46 AM

I think the original MAGIC MIKE was a pretty small-potatoes production to start with. With the exception of McConnaghy, none of those dudes were major box office at the time, including Channing.

It's a very entertaining movie, but it looks cheap, frankly. Which is appropriate given the setting and characters.

by Anonymousreply 18December 27, 2019 5:50 AM

I thought he was so hot in Magic Mike but forgot all about him. Now he is aging bad and he's short too. Yikes. It's a wrap buddy.

by Anonymousreply 19December 27, 2019 5:50 AM

R2 just spilled the tea all over the table.

As far as the rent, this is all I need to know: Did he ever make good and eventually pay it (even when it was too late)? No? Well, then, that's all I need to know. BYE!

by Anonymousreply 20December 27, 2019 5:51 AM

The movie wasn't shot in NYC, so this sounds like something setup on a personal basis for whatever Alex had going on in NYC. Channing probably personally connected him with his friend and Alex decided to screw over both relationships.

by Anonymousreply 24December 27, 2019 5:57 AM

[quote]Now he is aging bad and he's short too.

Google says he's 5'10.5-5'11." Perfectly average.

by Anonymousreply 25December 27, 2019 6:15 AM

He’s aging. Yuck. He’s just another privileged arrogant asshole. Nobody cares

by Anonymousreply 26December 27, 2019 6:21 AM

He seems like the type that put out for roles while he was underage, regretted the experience, and lashed out. Being around a modern casting couch champ like Tatum probably really set Alex off. Let's face it, Channing was coming off a string of undeserved leading man films that did marginally well thanks to his aging female fan base. He got fat and his career cooled off, but then he came back with Magic Mike hot again. Alex was probably told, while sucking off producers, that he's a good actor, so he obviously didn't have much respect for Channing. I wonder if he would of pulled the same shit on a friend of McConaughey's?

by Anonymousreply 27December 27, 2019 6:22 AM

R25 I dont think that's his real height. No way. You just believe everything you read on Google? haha.

by Anonymousreply 28December 27, 2019 6:22 AM

His directorial debut was released a full year ago basically in a four-wall day and date limited release. Why are they bringing it up now?

by Anonymousreply 29December 27, 2019 6:28 AM

Why couldn't he pay? Make no sense. He was coming off I Am Number Four (Dreamworks), plus he was in Beastly. It's not like he didn't have money.

It sounds like he's really just a cheap ass.

by Anonymousreply 30December 27, 2019 6:28 AM

But then why should we believe you any better, r28?

by Anonymousreply 31December 27, 2019 6:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 32December 27, 2019 6:30 AM

r30 those movies don't pay much, the money comes in after a sequel is picked up. Even the Marvel guys were paid shit on their debut movies, then raked in the dough on the sequels.

by Anonymousreply 33December 27, 2019 6:32 AM

He's supposedly a major asshole.

by Anonymousreply 34December 27, 2019 6:32 AM

R27 Good observations. I didn't realise what a great year 2012 was for Tatum. He had Magic Mike, The Vow, AND 21 Jump Street.

I thought he was excellent in Foxcatcher and showed some serious range. I think he battles with alcoholism and coupled with the breakdown with his marriage, he hasn't been as hyperfocused on this career since. He strikes me as a genuine guy and I think he's talented. I'd love to see him make a comeback, and, with the right role, I think he could, whether commercially, artistically, or both. He is such an amazing dancer as well.

R22 lol! Well, if he had, he would have at least shown true remorse and tried to write his wrongs.

by Anonymousreply 35December 27, 2019 6:33 AM

R31 Who said I was trying to make you believe me? He looks small. I can tell. I don't give a shit what you believe. What I do know is that male actors lie about their height all the time.

by Anonymousreply 36December 27, 2019 6:36 AM

Yeah, the 2010s have been littered these hot body bros with a 2-3 year shelf life where they get leading man roles in cheap movies. Channing was replaced by the Rock. It's like, how do these non-actors suddenly step over the 1000 other real actors to get these movies? One Hollywood's secrets I guess.

by Anonymousreply 37December 27, 2019 7:03 AM

Why pay a few measly hundred dollars to Channing who is rich as fuck? Channing is a millionaire. He won’t miss the money. All loans should be written off. Fuck the rich.

by Anonymousreply 42December 27, 2019 1:08 PM

Read the article. He didn’t owe Tatum. He owed the friend whose apartment he was renting.

by Anonymousreply 43December 27, 2019 1:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 46December 27, 2019 1:51 PM

I honestly don't believe the story about the rent, Pettyfer is clearly bisexual and Channing and Steven Soderbergh are acey-deucey as hell. Pettyfer gives off major user and gigolo vibes so I'm guessing there was some drama with whoever he went to bed with to get this role.

by Anonymousreply 47December 27, 2019 2:02 PM

When they get hired first to star in a major motion picture when they're around college age, and people make a big fuss over them, it goes right to their heads. This was also Miles Teller's problem and Johnny Depp's problem and Maxwell Caulfield's problem.

It's better for them to have to work for fame for a few years, so they appreciate it more when they get it,.

by Anonymousreply 48December 27, 2019 4:20 PM

[quote] Read the article. He didn’t owe Tatum. He owed the friend whose apartment he was renting.

Oh that makes it OK then.

by Anonymousreply 53December 27, 2019 4:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 54December 27, 2019 4:29 PM

[quote]Alex was a child actor so he was probably a twat at a young age. I don't know why he would rehash it all.

Pettyfer shows all the signs of having been sexually abused from a young age.

by Anonymousreply 55December 27, 2019 5:29 PM

Agreed r55. He's probably a stuck up harpy about gay sex, which is why he hate's that sexually fluid Channing.

by Anonymousreply 56December 27, 2019 5:32 PM

Uh no Pettyfer was flaunting his fling with model Jules Horn all over social media, we had several threads about it.

by Anonymousreply 57December 27, 2019 5:34 PM

Jules is hot and showed him affection. The shit he went through was likely exploitative at best.

by Anonymousreply 58December 27, 2019 5:41 PM

[quote] He seems like the type that put out for roles while he was underage, regretted the experience, and lashed out. I wonder if he would of pulled the same shit on a friend of McConaughey's?

Nope, it's still weird. Tatum was pure A-list at that point. Tatum was the film's producer, and therefore, the BOSS on "Magic Mike." They were not equals, not even close. Tatum secured Soderbergh -- an A-list director -- for the film. Soderbergh adored Tatum and worked with him on multiple films, so Pettyfer knew the pecking order and that Tatum was at the very top and he was towards the bottom. Not the guy you want to piss off. Especially when that guy did you a favor and let you into his social circle.

Pettyfer is a piece of work, we will be hearing disturbing stories about him for whatever is left of his career.

by Anonymousreply 59December 27, 2019 6:32 PM

[quote] Well, I guess he's not all that stupid. He knows who is audience is and how to pander to them.

But as always, he undercuts himself.

While claiming to be this big feminist, he then implies the female interviewer does not know how to do her job fairly or well, and tells her she ought to look at Anthony Bourdain (a man) as a role model.

He cannot help being a douche. It sounds like it's just ingrained in him.

by Anonymousreply 60December 27, 2019 7:12 PM

The guy with the words "THANK YOU" tattooed above his dick pretending to be a feminist?

He should've gotten it tattooed above his asshole and on his chin (along with his agent's contact info), to thank the casting agents and producers he puts out for.

by Anonymousreply 61December 27, 2019 9:31 PM

I assume he was fucking the landlord, thought the rent was paid with ass, and was offended when asked for cash.

by Anonymousreply 67December 27, 2019 10:15 PM

Pettyfer didn’t owe money to Tatum, R42. You need to work on reading comprehension.

It was Tatum’s friend that got stiffed. And there’s no indication Pettyfer got the rental through Tatum; only that Tatum is friends with the landlord.

On the contrary, Tatum probably did Pettyfer no favors if Tatum was opposed to his casting from the get-go as Pettyfer alleges.

by Anonymousreply 68December 27, 2019 10:29 PM

So what if it’s Tatum’s friend. Let Tatum pay him then. He’s way richer than Pettyfer. He won’t miss the money.

by Anonymousreply 69December 27, 2019 10:36 PM

God the posts in this thread are idiotic. If the man owed rent, it doesn't matter who the landlord is. You pay what you owe. You don't say "fuck it, my landlord has rich friends."

That said, r62 is probably correct.

by Anonymousreply 70December 27, 2019 10:38 PM

Why not make Tatum pay for everybody else’s everything !

He’s rich!

by Anonymousreply 71December 27, 2019 10:46 PM

No, R70, you are wrong. If he has rich friends, the rich friend should just pay it, no big deal. If someone won the lottery, should he not just pick up the tab at dinner or is he going to be so tacky as to ask everyone to Venmo him? I have tons of student debt. Should I pay it? Fuck no! The rich corporations’ taxes should pay it.

by Anonymousreply 75December 27, 2019 11:03 PM

It is definitely odd that he didn't want to pay rent. He wasn't an A-lister but he had been working in t.v. & film since he was a kid and would have had more money to rent a place in NYC than the average person.

R76 the situation was most likely as R62 describes.

He was never hot enough to pull off the assholery. In his early days, his face was very chiseled and could look striking/modelesque from certain angles, under the right lighting conditions. I never found it pleasant to look at, though. There was and is something quite horsey about his features.

I find it interesting that he's dating one of Leo's exes/ex beards though. What's up with that?

It's interesting to extend the comparison of him to maxwell caulfield that someone made upthread. caulfield was also fucked up and from an incredibly happy home life (and is like Pettyfer probably bisexual), and was hailed as the biggest male beauty alive at about 22. And like Pettyfer he made everyone hate him on the set of the first big movie he starred in (Grease 2 for caulfield, I am Number Four for Pettyfer) and found work hard to come by after he made such a reputation for himself.

Caulfield, however, had humility, and worked on Broadway and then in soaps, and stopped acting like an asshole. he was never such a big star again, but he is by all accounts a nice and very grounded guy now, Pettyfer has not, and has kept on acting like an asshole.

Miles Teller has also had a similar career arc, though he is not nearly so beautiful as Caulfield or Pettyfer, and his first big-budget blockbuster (Fantastic Four) also tanked and he was exposed as an asshole by the press when that happened. It will be interesting to see when Top Gun 2 is released if he has matured like Caulfield, or remains a dick like Pettyfer.
