I think it's time we revisit "Home Alone" (1990), its sequels & the fast rise and fall of Macauley Culkin

Home Alone is one of my favorite Christmas films ever. It is so much fun to watch, and one I still enjoy as an adult, and a big part of that is because of how charismatic young Macauley Culkin is. He was an amazing find, and I still get why he became such a phenomenon. He was talented beyond belief, and seemed like a sweet kid who ended up a mess because of his parents.

I loved the sequel also, and preferred it to the original years ago, but now I prefer the first.

Home Alone 3 was dumb but the new kid was adorable!!!

Did you like them?

What happened to Culkin? What caused him to turn on Hollywood and fame and want a quiet life and normal life? He is so odd.

He has plenty of money and prefers to do other things. Seems as though he’s in a good place at last.

by Anonymousreply 1December 25, 2019 11:01 PM

I only watch this movie for the house It’s house porn

by Anonymousreply 2December 25, 2019 11:05 PM

Macaulay became very very rich, very very young, and made wise investments after separating from his parents (who were eating up his money). He doesn’t need to work since he was 15 or 16. He does when he wants, but he has the freedom that most of us want in life. He can do what he wants.

He also bought real estate young back in the 90s, for cheap. Idk if he has sold, but today most would be worth much more.

by Anonymousreply 3December 25, 2019 11:06 PM

Macaulay Culkin's ex-wife has multiple sclerosis

by Anonymousreply 4December 25, 2019 11:08 PM

The little prick was disturbingly sadistic towards those poor robber people

Trailer the upcoming Home Alone sequel (starring Macaulay Culkin) to be released in 2020

The sequel is undeniably better than the original; really pulled on the heartstrings. The first one is just a sneak peek into the childhood of a future serial killer.

by Anonymousreply 8December 25, 2019 11:15 PM

Considering all the shit he was put through in real life, who'd have thought Macaulay Culkin would still be free and alive in 2019 while Ricky Schroder and Henry Thomas ended up on the wrong side of the law?

by Anonymousreply 9December 25, 2019 11:17 PM

Lol @R6

by Anonymousreply 10December 25, 2019 11:18 PM

I am younger than him and I still to this day remember when he became a teen and was on Letterman. I had such a crush.

by Anonymousreply 11December 25, 2019 11:21 PM

In the interview at r11 Culkin is 13 and is smarter and wittier than Letterman. Letterman was also very annoying throughout, and Culkin was incredibly professional and mature, and has a lot of charm for a 13 year old.

Letterman came off condescending. Culkin handled him well.

by Anonymousreply 12December 25, 2019 11:30 PM

I always found the Church scene incredibly moving. Culkin was a kid and handled this scene like an adult.

by Anonymousreply 14December 25, 2019 11:38 PM

Melissa McCarthy has been cast as Buzz girlfriend in the 2020 sequel

by Anonymousreply 15December 25, 2019 11:40 PM

Still think Michael did something to him.

by Anonymousreply 16December 25, 2019 11:42 PM

He still defends Michael to this day.

by Anonymousreply 17December 25, 2019 11:43 PM

I'm surprised none of the other child actors who appeared on [italic]Webster[/italic] besides Emmanuel Lewis commented on MJ, especially Chad Allen.

by Anonymousreply 18December 25, 2019 11:52 PM

Agree with R9. With the early insane money and fame, followed predictably by excess alcohol and drugs — he could be the poster child for : Former Child Stars Who Survived.

by Anonymousreply 19December 26, 2019 12:31 AM

He really was excellent in the first Home Alone. It still stands the test of time.

A few weeks ago, I saw the Toronto Symphony Orchestra play the score with a screening of the film. It was a lot of fun, and such a surprise (and treat) when the film's composer John Williams came out at the end. I usually hate the last quarter with all the hijinks, pranks and pratfalls with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, but seeing it with a huge audience and many kids, I got it.

Also, Catherine O'Hara's performance is terrific.

I like the sequel although I still think the first film is superior. Setting it in NYC was a smart move. And Tim Curry is delightful in a supporting role.

by Anonymousreply 20December 26, 2019 1:38 AM

Tim Curry made the sequel. He was so good.

by Anonymousreply 21December 26, 2019 1:46 AM

Tim Curry in Home Alone 2 is a total DLer.

by Anonymousreply 22December 26, 2019 2:00 AM

No, no it’s not time to revisit this.

by Anonymousreply 23December 26, 2019 2:12 AM

Michael Jackson was all over Macauley like flies on shit.

by Anonymousreply 24December 26, 2019 2:41 AM

"What happened to Culkin?"

Presumably OP has been living in a cave on Mars for the past twenty-five years

(hint: it rhymes with Jichael Mackson).

by Anonymousreply 25December 26, 2019 2:46 AM

I wish they'd make full movies for Angels With Filthy Souls and Angels With Even Filthier Souls.

by Anonymousreply 26December 26, 2019 4:07 AM

Home Alone 2 has a better location and better supporting cast, but the original has a better sequence with the burglars and more Christmas charm to me.

But yeah, he was a great actor. I hope he is OK and not damaged by getting too famous too young.

by Anonymousreply 27December 26, 2019 5:07 AM

The originals setting was in a Beautiful Chicago suburb. That’s better than fugly NYC

by Anonymousreply 28December 26, 2019 12:18 PM

He was so adorable as a boy.

by Anonymousreply 29December 26, 2019 2:22 PM

Yesss R20. John Williams was so very instrumental (ha) to enjoyment of movies back then. I almost let out an excited yelp when I heard the solo horn Jurassic Park theme in the middle of Jurassic World (1). And hearing the gorgeous Force theme and Leia’s theme almost made up for some of the plot failings of tRoS last week. So many great memories of his music!

by Anonymousreply 31December 26, 2019 3:45 PM

Bonnie Bedelia is his aunt...did not know that until a few weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 35December 26, 2019 3:57 PM

I forgot just how many gay jokes there were in the second film.

I also forgot that this was where Tim Curry was starting to put on weight.

by Anonymousreply 36December 26, 2019 4:02 PM

Gay jokes in HA2? Other than Angels with Even Filthier Souls/Concierge Chase, I cant think of any others. What else is there, R36?

R42 get your mind out of the gutter.

by Anonymousreply 44December 27, 2019 11:27 AM

I was 22 when the original Home Alone came out. I've never liked it. I thought it was a movie geared toward a child's fantasy that he's smarter than the adults. All the violence against the burglars was not funny. Kids loved it, though, and had I been a child, I might have liked it. I've tried to watch it several times over the years to see if I missed something, but I just didn't care for it. I never bothered with either of the sequels.

by Anonymousreply 45December 27, 2019 12:36 PM

[quote] Gay jokes in HA2? Other than Angels with Even Filthier Souls/Concierge Chase, I cant think of any others. What else is there, [R36]?

The whole subtext behind the concierge spying on what he assumes is Mr. McCallister. There's also this exchange of dialogue:

KEVIN: Oh, he was pretty mad.

CONCIERGE: He was?

KEVIN: He said he didn't come here to have his naked rear spied on.

CONCIERGE: Of course not. Will he be down soon?

KEVIN: He already left.

CONCIERGE: I would've liked to have offered my personal apology.

KEVIN: If a guy saw you in the shower, would you want to see him?

CONCIERGE: I suppose not.

And keep in mind that this is the same studio that made [italic]The Rocky Horror Picture Show[/italic] and the same director who would go on to make [italic]Mrs. Doubtfire[/italic] a year later, which also had an Uncle Frank, except this time he was actually gay.

by Anonymousreply 46December 27, 2019 2:17 PM

Didn’t John Heard die?

by Anonymousreply 47December 27, 2019 9:25 PM

R16, I think that, too. I suppose it’s possible that MJ didn’t diddle the most famous of his little friends.

by Anonymousreply 48December 27, 2019 9:33 PM

^^^ Wasn't there an eyewitness/staff member who said he saw MJ fondling MC at Neverland?

Not even the hours-long phone calls to little boys and the weekend-long sleepovers?

by Anonymousreply 53December 27, 2019 9:42 PM

Being on the phone with a child you care about has to be sexual?

by Anonymousreply 54December 27, 2019 9:43 PM

Spending hours on the phone day after day with an unrelated child you only met in person a couple of times through work is somehow anything other than sexual?

Love the house. The Neighborhood. The Church. I also like the houses in Risky Business, Halloween, and Ferris Bueller. The 80s had this IT factor...

Are the McAllisters upper middle class or upper class?

Are they richer than the Lampoon people?

by Anonymousreply 57December 27, 2019 9:58 PM

The McAllisters are definitely upper class. The dad pays for everyone’s flight and hotel etc. Uncle Frank doesn’t pay for any of it.

As good as Macaulay Culkin was I don't think it would have worked without Catherine O'Hara. She was brilliant on [italic]SCTV[/italic] and didn't mind lending her talents to a movie where an 8-year-old was the star of the show. A poorer actress would just sit there on the screen but there's also the temptation to talk down to the material, but she resists it.

by Anonymousreply 61December 27, 2019 11:09 PM

Ahhhh, your cookin, Frankie!

by Anonymousreply 62December 28, 2019 3:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 63December 28, 2019 4:03 AM

The character was two years younger than he was.

by Anonymousreply 64December 28, 2019 4:19 AM

I always found it strange that in the sequel, aside from Buzz and Kieran Culkin's character, the rest of the kids are different from the first film. The "Les Incompetents" girl is not in the sequel.

R65 I always wondered why they changed the actors for the sequel

by Anonymousreply 67December 28, 2019 11:48 AM

Why is the focus still on MJ and not that creepy perverted photographer (forgot his name)? There's a sexual photo of Macaulay in his collection. That's way more proof than with MJ. Actually, I'm more inclined to believe that MJ was only trying to protect these boys from pedos in Hollywood. As a child he was probably abused himself.

by Anonymousreply 68December 28, 2019 11:49 AM

I don’t believe MJ hurt them either.

How many of you bitches were jealous of that house and lifestyle? Such a huge, beautiful house and so much space. Although really outdated now with the ugly wallpapers and countertops 🤣). Loved that your clothes went straight to the basement. Did they ever mention his father's profession? Lawyer? Broker? CEO? Must be hell to clean that huge house without a maid though.

I watched it again over the holidays and there are always 3 things bothering/amusing me: 1. I did not like the way the adults treat Kevin in the kitchen after he spilled the milk. His uncle called him an idiot (?). 2. I was still a little kid when the movie first came out, but do any of you still remember a time without any airport security? The family goes straight from the airport shuttle to the gate. No seat reservations either lol. What happened to the luggage? And no one would let Kevin on a plane today without a passport and boarding pass. 3. Also weird that the kid was home alone for days and neither the scary neighbor nor the police or CPS really cared. I know it was just a movie, but this lack of concern for a missing 8yo child was bizarre (and probably unrealistic even in the 80s/early 90s). The police would break down that door in less than 10min today if someone reported this. And the family probably would be facing an investigation and lots of legal trouble with CPS.

by Anonymousreply 80December 31, 2019 6:16 PM

How do kids today respond to this movie? The plot would change a lot if you moved it to the present day and worked in the Internet and TSA. I wonder how they feel when they see a world yet to be introduced to things they have never known life without.
