In terms of the false advertising and poor taste? They're so exquisitely designed with its boxes and gold wrapping which tricks you into thinking you will get something succulent but instead you get a blah tasting mess. I always get internally offended if someone tries to offer me it on the Holidays.
Is Ferrero Rocher the Olive Garden of Chocolate?

Almond Roca is similar.

You are eating too many at a time OP. Just eat one a day, not the entire container all in one sitting.

I found See's chocolate to be less wonderful than some of you cunts had promised. A friend gave me a box this week, and it tasted sweet rather than like chocolate. I don't have enough experience with Olive Garden to deem it Olive Gardenesque, but it was not the superlative chocolate I'd been led to expect.

I was given a big hollow Ferraro Rocher egg with chocolates inside it. The chocolate that made up the egg was very waxy and flavorless. I think they added ingredients to ensure it would stay intact as an edible container. I haven’t eaten the inside chocolates yet, but discarded most of the chocolate egg container because it tasted like brown Crayon.

Aldi's chocolates (store brand Moser-Roth) are surprisingly good. Ferrero Rocher is good. Hershey is inedible wax, especially since they started adding PGPR as an emulsifier. Tootsie Rolls are just chocolate that gave up :)

R54: Lindt Excellence 85% is ok. I consume one square a day. However, any Lindt product under 85% cocoa solids has too much sugar. The 90% is dutched (processed with alkali), so very little flavor and almost no antioxidants. Never tried 99%. Maximum cocoa solids in Lindor is 60%, has too much sugar, and tastes closer to milk chocolate so I never buy it.
R51: El Rey is on par with Valhrona at around 70% cocoa solids, and tastes pretty good. These would be my go-to chocolates for special occasions.

[quote].Even Godiva, which at one time was very high class, is now common because Oprah said it was her favorite and exposed it to the commercial masses
Godiva used to be a Belgian maker of chocolates that used absolutely fresh ingredients and was a byword for quality. Their milk chocolates had to be kept in the fridge to stop from spoiling. The company was sold to a Turkish operation and the manufacturing shifted there. It is just cheap supermarket chocolate living on past glories now.
The other well-known Belgian chocolatier Leonidas is still family owned.

Ferrero Rocher is not the worst thing I've put in my mouth, but it's not a fine quality chocolate either. The holiday advertising image of towering cones of gold-wrapped confections offered with a rich, plummy voice, "Ferrero Rocher? Ferrero Rocher?" are slightly amusing for posing a middling product as a luxury but it seems to have worked for the brand.
I wouldn't take deep offense at being offered one, maybe only a laugh if it were from a butler brandishing a silver (gold-flashed?) tray of them.

Hersheys is a very specific type of chocolate candy. If you grew up with it, it’s fine but otherwise I’m not sure why somebody would come to it as an adult. Also, great chocolate can be eaten as just a chocolate bar but her she’s had a very broad line of bars and the milk chocolate bar was just an option. Their special dark bar would probably be more to peoples likings but again, it’s cheap candy. Sees candy isn’t great but it is fresh.
A lot of what you pay for in candy is freshness. There’s a lot of tastes and textures that can’t be achieved in something that needs to be able to sit on the shelf for six months.

R94 Hershey chocolate is bitter. Many chocolates are "smoother" because their acids are reduced with alkali. There's controversy about that, with which i disagree. When i bake, i use Dutched cocoa. Otherwise, my baked goods are lousy. Eating chocolate is different.

You're a complete fool who doesn't have the vaguest idea of what you're talking about. Why look for evidence when you can go on emotion? The public broadcaster where I live has a science program and they clearly stated that there is no evidence that GMOs cause harm. Do you know what recombinant DNA technology is? Probably not. It's when they artificially insert DNA from another organism. It has many practical applications, eg. the production of clotting factors, insulin, hepatitis B vaccine, and so on. I hope you and no one you know ever uses these products because they're artificially produced so they must be dangerous.
Btw, when recombinant DNA technology was first developed in the 1970s, scientists were worried that a dangerous new organism would be unintentionally produced and it might be released from the lab accidentally and cause widespread havoc. Guess what? It never happened. But I agree with you --- going by fear and not evidence is the correct way to do things. Stick to topics you know something about, like the taste of chocolate.

R55 One additional comment, GMOs do not belong in food supplies. Their purpose in food is to make profits, not enhance food, That's why certain countries have banned it in food supplies, capiche? I did not say anything about other applications; that's your own narrow mind and prejudices at work. Please note nobody liked your post.
The change and poor quality of Godiva chocolate after it was sold was obvious to those with sensitive palates. I can taste complex dishes, determine the ingredients and recipe and recreate them. Kentucky Fried Chicken is just mass market fast food, but I deduced the ingredients of original KFC as a university student, but will not reveal the original recipe other than Colonel Sanders lied. There's one spice not found in typical American kitchens. Also, original recipe sold at KFCs today is not his. The raw chicken is supplied by Tyson premarinated in MSG, which is dangerous to certain people, so i don't eat the finished product. If you're as informed as you imply, you know MSG upsets neurotransmitters in many individuals. As i said, please troll elsewhere and go to Hades.

r123. You should write for the tabloids aspie boy Sheldon, only reporting half truths. I said I clean my butt hole with alcohol wipes in preparation to be rimmed as a courtesy to the guy who is riming me. I guess all sex is foreign to you, or you like the taste of shit.

Why do people come to the DL expecting it to be The Ladies Home Journal or Town and Country, all polite and prim and proper? It's DataLounge FFS, it's a shit fight of nastiness.

R59, I really like La Maison du Chocolat.
Also good is the chocolate from Glacier Confections, Jacques Torres and Neuhaus Belgian Chocolate

[quote]Is Ferrero Rocher the Olive Garden of Chocolate?
They are worse, they are like the Lipton Tea of chocolate.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 26, 2019 1:27 PM |
R130 LOL. Chris Evert made big bucks endorsing Lipton tea. The company once sponsored a huge tournament in Miami. I wonder if she really drank that? I never drink that as an adult. BTW, thanks to those who recommended the chocolatier in West Virgina. Jackie Kennedy ordered White House crystal from WV because it's always been a poor state.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 26, 2019 1:34 PM |
OP, I too was very disappointed upon 1st trying Ferrero Rocher. Loved Hershey's when I was very young. It's dramatically changed for the worse like most American chocolate and candy. Definitely not the same product at all.
Was given a box of Whitman chocolates for Christmas. Not as overly sweet as Sees and Ethel M's. Wish I could try some of the Austrian brands as I prefer very dark chocolate.

Is this affliction worse than stanksleeve?
by Anonymous | reply 133 | December 26, 2019 1:44 PM |
R50, Agreed. Shame on the office manager to allow such a toxic environment at work. Proven fact, negative work environments result in drastically lowered productivity and more sick days taken. Understand it's why so many dream of having their own business.
I've seen so many office environments with unnecessarily high turnover because of lazy supervisors that won't put a stop to office BS.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | December 26, 2019 1:46 PM |
R133 LOL i'd say absolutely not!
by Anonymous | reply 135 | December 26, 2019 1:47 PM |
OP, It's the hydrogenated oils and fake fats and high fructose syrup that has ruined the taste of most American made chocolate. It it were higher quality chocolate you'd naturally eat much less of it too.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | December 26, 2019 1:48 PM |
R134 Correct. I saw an accurate meme that said employees don't leave companies, they leave bad managers. True in my case. Personal lives, gossip and interference don't belong in a professional setting. My management wouldn't stop that. The guilty parties are usually women. They don't get the hint employees are there to work and make profits for their employer, not to carry on and make friends.

R141 Thanks, i'm well informed. No MSG for me. I also know about ingredients that can be combined to create MSG. The American food supply is full of toxic stuff like HFCS. I recommend the documentary called "The Men Who Made Us Fat" which i believe contains a segment on HFCS. Thanks and happy holidays.

[quote]R55 One additional comment, GMOs do not belong in food supplies. Their purpose in food is to make profits, not enhance food, That's why certain countries have banned it in food supplies, capiche? I did not say anything about other applications; that's your own narrow mind and prejudices at work. Please note nobody liked your post.
You clicked w/w on your own post four times. Whoopee. Whether someone likes my post has nothing to do with whether I'm right.
I'm pretty sure the correct spelling is "capisce". Can't you get anything right?
No, no, no. Your argument isn't consistent. There are no naturally occurring bacteria with the gene for human insulin. Organisms produced by recombinant DNA technology are an abomination, according to you. Insulin goes into your body. Blood clotting factor goes into your body. What's the difference from GMO foods? Certain countries have banned GMO foods because politicians have bowed to public hysteria on the issue. Where's your evidence that GMO foods are harmful? Link to an article from a reputable journal. Let me guess -- big corporations are suppressing the evidence.
Are you an antivaxxer too? I'm embarrassed by your ignorance.

Oh Sheldon honey, you're just so much fun! You don't have sex with anyone, ever, period. Never have. You're an incel. You're too concerned about your MSG and Colonel Sander's secret herbs and spices to engage in real human contact, that's why you come on here. I'm sure if I told a health professional that I use alcohol wipes on my behind before sexual relations they'd tell me I was being responsible.

[quote]The change and poor quality of Godiva chocolate after it was sold was obvious to those with sensitive palates.
You're probably consuming GMO foods all the time. I'll bet if a product contains GMOs, it doesn't even appear on the label. Hahaha.

r154 Shelly, you haven't blocked me, I'm right here. I can still see all your posts. Are you imagining things again?
by Anonymous | reply 155 | December 26, 2019 5:00 PM |
Shelly, isn't 'immature child' a tautology? Or, I suppose, one can be a mature child. I bet you were a precocious, mature child. Your mother was probably your best friend I imagine. She helped to keep the MSG and GMO away. And she played with you when all the neighbourhood children ran from you and thought you were weird. She also made sure you never went near a public commode. Haha, commode. Who has used the word 'commode' in the last 50 years?! I bet you never gave your mother Ferrero Rocher.

R148, Not Sheldon but I try to eat food that is as natural as possible ie not processed. Many have stomach distress from various additives.
Read the labels on purchased desserts or make them yourself. Why do you think European cookies and most chocolate tastes so much better than American versions? Can't you taste the difference of fake food?
Also you'll naturally eat much smaller portions of highly flavorful, spiced dishes. Don't you want to taste chocolate instead of fake sweetener and hydrogenated fat?
by Anonymous | reply 158 | December 26, 2019 5:50 PM |
[quote]Lol. Not to pull rank, but you definitely haven't tasted true bitter chocolate. Hersheys true note is SALT. Salty brown wax.
Hershey's calling card is vomit. It literally tastes of vomit. It is because Hershey's lipolyses the milk in its chocolate due to a misunderstanding of the recipe of some European chocolate it initially set up to emulate. That produces butyric acid and makes Hershey's smell and taste of puke.
If you've been brought up with it you won't really notice and Hershey's will just take you back to your childhood. Give it to anyone outside of the US for the first time and don't be surprised when they spit it out in disgust.

Thanks R129. I'm going to try some La Maison du Chocolat. I have to use MyUSAddress because they won't ship directly to Canada. The way that American and European online retailers snub Canada is an outrage and should be taken up at the U.N.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | December 26, 2019 6:19 PM |
In addition to talking shit (and you two know who you are) you're all talking about eating shit: F-R is dreck. Hershey's is dreck. Godiva is overpriced dreck.
L.A. Burdicks, on the other hand, is about as good as chocolate gets. Which it should be at $68 to $74 a pound.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | December 26, 2019 6:39 PM |
R113 Was the secret ingredient somewhat rare to American kitchens dried Ginger by chance? I have a recipe that claims this is the one most cannot identify. I've made it before, and it tasted like KFC, only better.
Ginger is a secrect ingredient in many sausages too, especially Bratwursts. Hardly anyone is aware it's there, but when it's missing, the wursts don't taste quite right.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 26, 2019 7:59 PM |
R163 as someone who works in e-commerce, the reason many retailers don’t ship to Canada is all the customs paperwork involved.

[quote]R163 as someone who works in e-commerce, the reason many retailers don’t ship to Canada is all the customs paperwork involved.
I see. I just assumed Canada wasn't a big enough market for certain companies to bother.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | December 26, 2019 9:48 PM |
R170 well there’s that, too. If the market were big enough, brands would maintain a dedicated warehouse in Canada and ship directly from there.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | December 26, 2019 9:51 PM |
Alcohol wipes aren’t enough.
But they could be the finishing touch after 2 thorough scrubbings with an antibacterial/antiseptic soap using a washcloth and 2 corresponding thorough rinsings with a spray attachment.
Don’t scrub yourself raw, however. That leads to small cuts which can lead to infection. Dried out skin can also be itchy, rimming should be an occasional (if at all) occurrence.

I used to like the white-chocolate-coconut ones. Rafaello, I think they’re called.
It’s been a looooooong time since I’ve had a chocolate I thought was any good. There are some nice artisanal chocolates at Whole Foods. There is a brand called Scharffen Berger that I thought was good.

Has anyone tried Chocolove or Endangered Species brands of dark chocolate bars at Whole Foods? They contain nuts, coconut, or fruit and are on sale. I want to taste chocolate and not an overly rich, high fat product. Dislike See's and Ethel M's for that reason.
