I never really saw any of his movies. Was River as good an actor as Joaquin?
Had River lived would Joaquin have eclipsed him?

That looks photoshopped.

This is interesting because Leo was definitely the new River.

Your thread is a hot mess. I only know, because I’m the queen of hot mess threads.

I'm sorry R3

R4 no no no it’s ok. I can relate.

River was supposed to be Total Eclipse but he died and they got Leo.
You get the see Leo's 🥜 peanut fuck in the film. 😝

*peanut dick

Quite clearly a manip. Compare how in focus Leo is versus River, even though they're not standing far apart.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 24, 2019 7:43 AM |
River had a much more commanding presence than Joaquin, IMO. But that was in part because of his beauty. You couldn't keep your eyes off of him.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 24, 2019 7:44 AM |
I do think he's prettier than Leo.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 24, 2019 2:27 PM |
River was a great actor and I think he would have done full frontal nudity.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 24, 2019 3:34 PM |
Leo didn't know River well at all. He did tell a story once about seeing River at a party the night River died. They passed on the stairs, and Leo wanted to stop and talk to him, but he got shy about it and didn't. River went on to the Viper Room and the rest is tragic history.
I've also heard that River is who Cameron originally had in mind for Jack in Titanic. If true, you could say that Leo owes his whole career to River's demise. Rather like Paul Newman owed his to the death of James Dean.

Wouldn't River have been a bit too old to play Jack in Titanic? He would've been in his late 20s by then.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 24, 2019 6:44 PM |
River died in 1993, when he was 23. If Cameron was considering him it must have been during the early planning stages of the film, when he would have been the right age. That said, Jack could have been a bit older--a slightly older actor might have worked better with Kate Winslet, who looked nowhere near 17 and seemed almost matronly next to twinkie DiCaprio.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 24, 2019 7:07 PM |
Winslet is actually a year younger than Dicaprio but yes she looked older. She was 21 during filming but looked at least mid-twenties.

He was so handsome. Good actor. But towards the end, he was too messed up. And it showed in his later movies.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 24, 2019 9:12 PM |
I remember seeing pap pics of him in magazines in the last couple of years before he died and he looked a mess. When you see photos of the clean-cut River with short hair who was so handsome, that's not how he looked at the end. He was really disheveled-looking and unkempt.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 24, 2019 9:46 PM |
His drug habit seemed to really ramp up during My Own Private Idaho--weren't he and Keanu doing heroin during the shoot? After that, he never really was sober again.

I always thought Joaquin had a career only because of goodwill caused by River's death. I remember disliking him as an actor in Gladiator and thinking the only reason he got the job was his last name. He's obviously proven his worth a long time ago but I've never really warmed up to him. I haven't seen Joker yet, though.

Give back your Gay Card, please.
It is Liza WITH A "Z"

River would be turning 50 in 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 24, 2019 11:44 PM |
Does anyone remember A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon? I remember that River was very cute in it, and that his character was teased for having a smaller than average penis.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 24, 2019 11:53 PM |
I wonder what Leo D.'s career would've been like if River hadn't died.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 25, 2019 12:03 AM |
Who's Lisa Minnelli?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 25, 2019 12:16 AM |
If River had lived and taken the lead in Titanic, Leo would have done Boogie Nights, the other film he was considering at the time. Leo would probably have still had a good career: It's Mark Wahlberg we'd have been spared if River didn't OD.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 25, 2019 12:31 AM |
R25, nobody would have bought Leo as a hung porn star.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 25, 2019 12:34 AM |
Leo's breakthrough role in This Boy's Life had already been filmed before River's death, and River would've been too old for The Basketball Diaries, Gilbert Grape and Marvin's Room so Leo still would've gotten those. He also would've been just a tad too old for Titanic, too. But some of the other things Leo did in the 2000s, when the roles became strictly adult, could've gone to Phoenix.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 25, 2019 12:36 AM |
I don't know, R26, young Leo had the skinny lanky 70s body back then, so his general look would have been period appropriate. And I don't think freakishly big penises necessarily correlate with body size. In any case, he was PT Anderson's first choice for Boogie Nights, but he passed to do Titanic.
The part of Dirk Diggler would certainly have been acted better if Leo had had the part: I've always thought Wahlberg was the weakest link in Boogie Nights.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 25, 2019 12:50 AM |
This is Dicaprio in 1997. The scenes with Dirk and Amber would have been even more disturbing if he'd been playing that role. At least Wahlberg looked like an adult.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 25, 2019 12:53 AM |
Ha. I see, R30. Oh well, they'd have just given him the same prosthetic Wahlberg got.
