I get the sense that the children’s hospital, St. Jude, that her father started is doing great things for kids with cancer (covering all the families’ costs). That Girl is involved with that and I applaud its impact.

She does good work, she's still one of the great feminists in a time when the word has no meaning - she fought against regular perceptions of women and men. She believes in children and their rights. Around the world. She works tirelessly for the kids at St. Judes. We're not all 80 years old here on Datalounge. When these threads about respected women come up I do my research. I've never once seen That Girl, but I've seen a couple of her TV films and "George Is Dead in Relatively Speaking" on Broadway. She's talented and sublime. A great woman. Fonda runs around getting arrested for her newest adventure and old gays faint at how brave and beautiful she is. Maybe SHE is the fake mean cunt? Her children hate her and her "work" is a bunch of personal aggrandizing appearances. Marlo Thomas has a life work. She hasn't deviated from her feminist principles or her filial care to St. Jude. That hospital and thousands of kids are her children. She's with the same husband for 40 years. They love each other and took their time to find out why. That's what I hear. She is naturally going to be more demanding because Phil is older and a bit of a knob. But only a bitter old fag would take delight in calling such a grand humanitarian a c*nt. Marlo Thomas lives a meaningful life. She actually works.
Streisand is a CUNT. Possibly the most vile and selfish celebrity who ever lived. Her name is on a few buildings and awards - but she's no humanitarian. Ask anyone. Her gross display of noblesse and egotism follows her to the toilet. She likes to show off her awards, but she's already forgotten and leaves nothing behind. Obnoxious excuse for a woman.
Marlo leaves a important legacy. She will be remembered for generations. Her life accomplishment is bigger than your world. Her destiny was more important than acting. She's humble in what she achieved, but she's won many awards. When you work for children and keep a privately funded hospital going for decades.....this is an immeasurable accomplishment. She's not a c*nt. She's a busy lady.

Her daddy was a smart investor in real estate back in the 60s. She doesn't need to steal from charity. She's not named "Trump." Her father's house in BH sold for $65M a couple years ago.

MTM took a similar premise and made it far funnier and even moving. It caused the synthetic "THAT GIRL" to be instantly forgotten
That's not entirely a fair comparison. They were really in different decades. In That Girl's decade women were expected to get married, move to the suburbs and get involved in family and PTA. A woman moving to the city to be an actress was revolutionary. By the time Mary came along, women were already accepting that they could put marriage on hold, move to the city and make a go of it.
Plus, they were different shows. That Girl was planned as a vehicle to make Marlo Thomas a TV star, like her daddy. Mary Tyler Moore had already proven herself as a TV commedienne and so her show was created as more of a sitcom ensemble. That's why in That Girl, everything revolves around Ann Marie. On MTM, we get to see glimpses of the lives of the ensemble, stories created for Rhoda, for Phyllis, for Ted, for Lou, for Murray.

I don't get the hate for her on here. So what if she's a moody bitch, that shouldn't be a surprise since she was a Hollywood brat, raised amongst the rich and famous. At least she has done positive things with fame and money. As for the butler's book, I haven't read it, but it's one person story....maybe the butler hated her for personal reasons...maybe he was the problem and not her. After all, Phil Donahue is still with her, and they seem happy enough in those pics. She may not be the nicest or friendliest person, but she had done great work and has kept her father's legacy going, so good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 24, 2019 4:41 PM |
That Girl left the air just after MTM started, it's not like they were conceived in different universes. Indeed, the creators of That Girl had been the writers fro the Dick Van Dyke Show with MTM. Moore had writers with more contemporary sensibility and the show did not require her to have a bf. Even her parents were shortlived on the show although they served the purpose of making it clear that Mary would spend the night with someone she wasn't planning to marry.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 24, 2019 5:36 PM |
I think Marlo herself decided to discontinue the program. I believe the show still had decent ratings, but she either would've had to have her character marry Donald, or evolve her into a more daring and liberated 70s woman, which she didn't want to do. So, she ended it as the cute show it was.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 24, 2019 5:37 PM |
The culture changed dramatically between '66 and '70. That Girl was from a very different time and people wanted it to remain so. It had a comforting naivete. And it existed in a NY that was about to disappear. Also she had a boyfriend that people loved. He was a very important part of the show. She was stuck with him and who wouldn't want to be?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 24, 2019 6:11 PM |
That Girl had guest stars like Ethel Merman. MTM had guest stars like Betty Ford.
It's like comparing I Love Lucy with Maude. Two completely different shows for different audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 24, 2019 6:15 PM |
The world hadn't changed much, but tv actually started catching up, rather than recycling the stuff they'd been doing since the 50s.
She did pull the plug on the show and was the one who decided not to do a marriage, but by that point the show had run its course and, really, after all that time, she's either gonna be a real actress or do something else.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 24, 2019 9:22 PM |
Donald Hollinger went on to date Mary Tyler Moore. He cheated on Mary and Mary accepted the cheating. An overall depressing episode in the later seasons of MTM.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 24, 2019 9:50 PM |
Marlo ended That Girl voluntarily after five years. However, if the show were going to end, the writers, producers and sponsor, Clairol, wanted the show to go out with a bang and a big wedding for Ann Marie and Donald. Marlo Thomas rejected that ending. She didn’t want young women thinking that marriage was the prize or ultimate goal. As a result, That Girl is remembered as a fun sitcom but with the message that a woman can make it on her own and have a life without marriage.

Not to disparage Miss Thomas, but St Jude is her fathers legacy, not hers. She raises funds for it. Streisand on the other hand might have her name on a few buildings but it's from money she earned. She has donated millions of her own money. She has given away more money than you an your entire family will make in a lifetime.

Wiki says the show was never in the Top 30 shows in terms of ratings. Did Danny Thomas keep it on the air? No wonder I've never seen it. I grew up with re-runs of old TV shows like "Bewitched," "The Brady Bunch," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" etc. but I've never seen "That Girl" or "One Day at a Time." The latter two did not travel.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 25, 2019 2:26 PM |
That Girl was a fun show, albeit in a fantasy world. Much like Sex and the City, it brought a horde of young women to NYC. Even in an episode of Roseanne, she mentions it. Her cousin comes to visit and Roseanne says "We were supposed to move to NYC together and become That Girl. "
I too was very attracted to Ted Bessell. He wasn't gorgeous, more like an Everyman, but there was something sexy about him.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 25, 2019 2:41 PM |
I find that hard to believe, r100. I remember it as a very popular show.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 25, 2019 2:44 PM |
The butler's book about Marlo was awesome!!! The paperbook came out with an epilog, where he tells of a meeting in which he was summoned by marlo to their massive new york penthouse, to discuss the book. She pleaded with him to not publish it, asking, "Am I really so awful a person? REALLY?"
Then Phil walks in, takes in the situation and yells, "I told you to be nicer to the servants!"
Also included were several letters the butler received after his hardcover came out, literally thousands of letters documenting what a bitch Marlo had been to these strangers, staff-members, neighbors, childhood friends, etc..
I have a friend who is a friend of hers now, and who makes it seem as though Marlo is a good person, kind, loving, funny. I keep far away, believing Marlo for telling me who she is the first time. But maybe the public humiliation worked a miracle?
What i especially love is that Marlo Thomas spent her life doing a macrobiotic diet, drinking Miso soup and eating rice crackers, having constant plastic surgery procedures only to wind up in her 80's looking worse than Phil. Life's a funny ol' joke....
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 25, 2019 3:14 PM |
She's probably given all that up, though. And no one who's had a shit load of plastic surgery ends up looking good. As Debbie Reynolds said, you're able to have two facelifts before you start to look odd...

I don't think there was any final twist, R97. Just many people disappointed that they didn't end the show with her marrying Donald. They were engaged, so fans wanted a wedding to be the send-off, and it wasn't.

It had a lot of impact on me, r118. My entire daytime wardrobe is vintage Cardinali.

Jim Brooks wrote That Girl. This is the same Jim Brooks who was responsible as writer, director for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Taxi, The Simpson’s, Will & Grace, etc., etc.

I always wondered if Persky and Denoff were closeted gays. After they did That Girl they went on to do Kate & Allie. That's a long time for two men to be writing comedies for women.

I read the butler's book. Very juicy.
My favorite tale from the book concerned a woman (married) employee, of Marlo and Phil who did their laundry. This involved carrying their stuff to and from the laundry in the building's basement. When Phil would see her carrying the laundry, he would carry it for her.
The woman, who was not American born (I don't remember her nationality) became pregnant. So, Marlo fires the pregnant employee without telling Phil.
At the same time, Phil is working on doing a show about pregnant women who have been fired when they were pregnant. (I don't think the show had yet aired.)
So, without telling Marlo, the (former) employee, together with her husband, go to Phil's office and talk to him about the fact that the woman had been fired.
According to the butler's book, Phil came home absolutely furious, and yelled and hollered at Marlo asking her what the hell she thought she was doing, etc.
The woman got her job back.
Yes, oh, yes, Marlo's a feminist when it suits her but otherwise, fuck you.

What has Marlo done to deserve such venpm? Seriously, I'd like to know. I have read these nasty comments for years, but never knew what she did to deserve this criticism. I always thought she seemed so nice.

Is she still That Bitch, or has she calmed down with age?

There's a new St. Jude's commercial with Marlo and her brother (who belongs in the DL pantheon for his role in bringing us "The Golden Girls"). He's turned into a hot GILF.

Doing 3 episodes in 1966 of That Girl isn't the same thing a creating MTM and other shows, as well as writing dozens of scripts for those later, better shows.

IIRC, the end of the series, Ann Marie realized she was in prison and had formulated the entire story as a fantasy to get her through prison life.

Isn't Marlo supposed to be begging for St. Jude?

R63, Oh, yes, it had. I was in college 1967-1971. Assassinations, campus shut-downs, the police riot at the Democratic Convention, Kent State, the first Earth Day, Woodstock, the Moon landing, Chappaquiddick, Tate-La Bianca, Altamont.
Yes, the world had changed.

Ann’s original neighbor Judy, referenced in R134 and R135, was played by Bonnie Scott, Broadway’s original Rosemary in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. Her husband on “That Girl” was played by a young Dabney Coleman. Never understood why they were replaced.
