That's not entirely a fair comparison. They were really in different decades. In That Girl's decade women were expected to get married, move to the suburbs and get involved in family and PTA. A woman moving to the city to be an actress was revolutionary. By the time Mary came along, women were already accepting that they could put marriage on hold, move to the city and make a go of it.

Plus, they were different shows. That Girl was planned as a vehicle to make Marlo Thomas a TV star, like her daddy. Mary Tyler Moore had already proven herself as a TV commedienne and so her show was created as more of a sitcom ensemble. That's why in That Girl, everything revolves around Ann Marie. On MTM, we get to see glimpses of the lives of the ensemble, stories created for Rhoda, for Phyllis, for Ted, for Lou, for Murray.

I was reading this thread, and then one of those St. Jude’s commercials featuring Marlo popped. Of course they’re pretty much ubiquitous so it’s not much of a coincidence.

As for the butler's book, I haven't read it, but it's one person story....maybe the butler hated her for personal reasons...maybe he was the problem and not her. She may not be the nicest or friendliest person, but she had done great work and has kept her father's legacy going, so good for her.

That Girl left the air just after MTM started, it's not like they were conceived in different universes. Indeed, the creators of That Girl had been the writers fro the Dick Van Dyke Show with MTM. Moore had writers with more contemporary sensibility and the show did not require her to have a bf. Even her parents were shortlived on the show although they served the purpose of making it clear that Mary would spend the night with someone she wasn't planning to marry.

I love when they show the old commercial her father did when he first started the hospital saying it was for children of all races and creeds.

I know we make jokes about the "glass table," but that hospital has done so much for so many children and for that alone, Danny Thomas is a legend.

I think Marlo herself decided to discontinue the program. I believe the show still had decent ratings, but she either would've had to have her character marry Donald, or evolve her into a more daring and liberated 70s woman, which she didn't want to do. So, she ended it as the cute show it was.

The culture changed dramatically between '66 and '70. That Girl was from a very different time and people wanted it to remain so. It had a comforting naivete. And it existed in a NY that was about to disappear. Also she had a boyfriend that people loved. He was a very important part of the show. She was stuck with him and who wouldn't want to be?

That Girl had guest stars like Ethel Merman. MTM had guest stars like Betty Ford.

It's like comparing I Love Lucy with Maude. Two completely different shows for different audiences.

The world hadn't changed much, but tv actually started catching up, rather than recycling the stuff they'd been doing since the 50s.

She did pull the plug on the show and was the one who decided not to do a marriage, but by that point the show had run its course and, really, after all that time, she's either gonna be a real actress or do something else.

Donald Hollinger went on to date Mary Tyler Moore. He cheated on Mary and Mary accepted the cheating. An overall depressing episode in the later seasons of MTM.

Marlo ended That Girl voluntarily after five years. However, if the show were going to end, the writers, producers and sponsor, Clairol, wanted the show to go out with a bang and a big wedding for Ann Marie and Donald. Marlo Thomas rejected that ending. She didn’t want young women thinking that marriage was the prize or ultimate goal. As a result, That Girl is remembered as a fun sitcom but with the message that a woman can make it on her own and have a life without marriage.

I watched this as a kid on television re-runs, along with the Munsters, Adams Family, Bewitched, Beverly Hillbillies, Flintstones et al. I prefer this sort of simple form of entertainment. I am opposed to "real life drama" programs. I don't find it entertaining. Good-bye.

Not to disparage Miss Thomas, but St Jude is her fathers legacy, not hers. She raises funds for it. Streisand on the other hand might have her name on a few buildings but it's from money she earned. I remember being very sad when Ted Bessell died. I had a certain level of lust for him back in the That Girl days. Poor guy died of an aortic aneurysm, which more often than not kills pretty fast. He was a child piano prodigy, playing Carnegie Hall at 12.

Bessell was pretty much unrecognizable by the time he died.

Unlike Marlo, Ted Bessell seems to have been universally liked by people who worked with him on That Girl and elsewhere. He aged quickly. His father died rather young (mid-50s).

Wiki says the show was never in the Top 30 shows in terms of ratings. Did Danny Thomas keep it on the air? No wonder I've never seen it. I grew up with re-runs of old TV shows like "Bewitched," "The Brady Bunch," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" etc. but I've never seen "That Girl" or "One Day at a Time." The latter two did not travel.

That Girl was a fun show, albeit in a fantasy world. Much like Sex and the City, it brought a horde of young women to NYC. Even in an episode of Roseanne, she mentions it. Her cousin comes to visit and Roseanne says "We were supposed to move to NYC together and become That Girl. "

I too was very attracted to Ted Bessell. He wasn't gorgeous, more like an Everyman, but there was something sexy about him.

I have a friend who is a friend of hers now, and who makes it seem as though Marlo is a good person, kind, loving, funny. I keep far away, believing Marlo for telling me who she is the first time. But maybe the public humiliation worked a miracle?

I don't think there was any final twist, R97. Just many people disappointed that they didn't end the show with her marrying Donald. They were engaged, so fans wanted a wedding to be the send-off, and it wasn't.

My favorite tale from the book concerned a woman (married) employee, of Marlo and Phil who did their laundry. This involved carrying their stuff to and from the laundry in the building's basement. When Phil would see her carrying the laundry, he would carry it for her.

The woman, who was not American born (I don't remember her nationality) became pregnant. So, Marlo fires the pregnant employee without telling Phil.

At the same time, Phil is working on doing a show about pregnant women who have been fired when they were pregnant. (I don't think the show had yet aired.)

So, without telling Marlo, the (former) employee, together with her husband, go to Phil's office and talk to him about the fact that the woman had been fired.

According to the butler's book, Phil came home absolutely furious, and yelled and hollered at Marlo asking her what the hell she thought she was doing, etc.

The woman got her job back.
