Remakes, sequels, and re-boots, oh my! These things have always existed as long as there have been movies, but they have never been as ubiquitous as they are now. The studio system as we know it is dead. It has been dead for 50 years. Even what took its place is now being pushed aside in the age of #MeToo. How much worse does mainstream entertainment have to get before the public says enough is enough? I’m almost afraid to answer that question because I am sure they will take that as a challenge.
Are we witnessing the endgame of Hollywood?

OP, even Spielberg and Lucas have been predicting the demise of the film industry for years. The high cost of filmmaking has made the studios even less willing to take risks, so they keep churning out the same superhero crap over and over again.

Did you see the date on your article? Do you you know where 2019 ranks among movie theater attendance in the last twenty years? Do you know how many films from this year are in Imdb's top 250 not counting Avengers? Keep yelling. The gods will eventually hear you

I think Christopher Nolan has another original blockbuster coming up.
But that’s rare.

What will Bollywood make without Hollywood to copy?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 24, 2019 1:52 AM |
hollywood is like madonna - it ran out of original ideas decades ago and has been churning out reductive garbage thinking anyone still cares.

Yeah, it's because you and I are afraid to write!
We have good ideas and we don't do it.

R8 the movie where the kid was on the game show was pretty good.

Marvel movies are all the rage in China so they will keep churning out these shitty movies. Hollywood will cater more and more to the tastes of the Chinese market. Hopefully the Chinese middle class starts clamoring for some deep movies.

There are many, many interesting films out there that you, sadly, won't see at the local multiplex. Foreign films; indies; weirdies...
I read "Sight & Sound" and "Film Comment" magazines and write down films they review. My city has a huge library system and- more often than not- they will have a film I'm looking for.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 24, 2019 3:53 AM |
Those aren’t Bollywood movies, r8.
A Bollywood movie is in Hindi, it’s 3 hours long and has musical numbers.
Oh, and it plagiarizes the shit out of Hollywood blockbusters.

OP's "three things + 'oh my'" construction should be a guaranteed endgame — anyone who uses it should be killed on the spot.

R17 I've been buying and reading Sight & Sound and Film Comment since the 1970s and I'm thinking of stopping soon because like cinema they have gone down hill and are a waste of money.

I miss the studio system movies, and I love story movies. Not these big blockbusters which are overdone with special effects and CGI. I really miss the 20th century movie industry. Preferably the earlier part to mid century, into the 70s and 80s.
We need movie stars again. Everyone today just considers themselves working actors and not cinematic gods and goddesses etc. We still have a few, but not to many real genuine movie stars anymore. I think the internet has ruined a lot of the magic of Hollywood. We the public know way to much about our favorite "stars" now. The mystique is gone. We see them 24/7 now in real time on social media and were just not as excited anymore to see them as we use to be.
The magic is gone. For now anyway. I think that's why I appreciate networks like TCM so much. Real talent, real stars, and great stories in cinematic form. Hollywood needs to get back to telling really good well written stories again, and get away from all of this trilogy bullshit. It's fucking tiresome at this point.
I prefer 20th century Hollywood. The 21st century isn't cutting it for me.

R2 not true, Bollywood movies have quietly entered China and they were well received by Chinese audience. No, they are not the stereotype singing and dancing trope or slumdog millionaire hollywood production. Taking Aamir Khan's movies, performed well overseas particular in China, Khan is a super star there, his 2016 movie Dangal broke all sorts of box office records, the first Indian movie to gross $300 million worldwide, and China alone contributed a staggering number of $206 million, more than two thirds of its box office from China.
If you read hollywood reporting, you might think there are only two movie markets - US and China, and both markets are dominated by superheroes or action stars, non-hollywood/european productions might have trouble entering US mainstream, but in China, they have plenty of room for indian movies, or even movies from small countries like Thailand (Bad Genius) and Lebanon (Capernaum), both achieved big success in China.
R13 I don't think you read the latest box office number from China, the change of taste already happened, China's 2019 box office number hits all time high, but guess what, 8 of the top 10 biggest films are Chinese local productions, they have nothing to do with marvel or hollywood. I think NYT had a piece last month saying Hollywood already in panic mode.

Then they'll just have to go back to adapting books and plays like they used to.

American cinema is dead, a victim of politics, finance and paucity of ideas. European cinema is heading in the same direction, with countries simply remaking popular films in their own language.
Cinema in South and East Asia continues to thrive because of politics, finance, and a poor, highly socially stratified/restricted population.

Artists will always find something way to work off or around the system. After the new American cinema, the independent cinema movement, we are due for the next artistic wave. Who knows what it might be?

One of my favorite films of 2018 was "Leave No Trace". But it left no trace at the box office because Amurkkka wants cartoons, video game and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
