Should I respond back to the boss on a group holiday greeting email?

The boss sent out a thank you for the great year, happy holidays, looking forward to a great year ahead group email to about sixty of us.

I never know whether to reply back to him with a happy holiday email of my own or to just consider it message delivered.

What do you or what would you do?

by Anonymousreply 25December 23, 2019 7:38 AM

He’s obviously hinting he wants to see your nudes, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1December 22, 2019 2:44 PM

I would say no response

by Anonymousreply 2December 22, 2019 2:46 PM

Do NOT "Reply To All" with a "thank you for the kind words" message. It's cheap and obviously a suck up move. Do not even reply privately. Say nothing. Instead, wait for another time, for example, after your boss gives a speech at a corporate function, and send him a warm follow up e-mail about what a great job he did and how inspiring it was.

The point is to gain control of the relationship. You reward him with praise when he performs sufficiently and professionally as a manager. Act, dress, write, speak, react and manage in a more professional manner than your boss. If he's worth his salt as a manager he'll appreciate you and utilize you knowing he can relax with you at the helm. If he's insecure he will be threatened by you. Hold your ground and you will come out on top - if not at this company, somewhere else.

No need to respond.

by Anonymousreply 4December 22, 2019 3:00 PM

Thanks all. My gut reaction was to not reply but to say something to him in person when I see him after the holidays.

I rarely reply all to any email R3, and I agree that is a suck up move. I am waiting to see how many colleagues do though, especially on a Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 5December 22, 2019 3:08 PM

OP types femme. x

by Anonymousreply 6December 22, 2019 3:20 PM

With that many employees, it would be almost impossible for him to deliver a message individually to each person.

However, you would only need to say happy holidays to him.

You should either reply directly or in person. Do NOT reply all.

Out of curiosity, how many people hit "reply all" and copied you on their insipid response?

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2019 3:32 PM

Only one so far R7. I think the majority of replies will be In evening. I work with a lot of 9-5 people who like to send emails from home from 9pm. You know, the “look at me, I’m still slaving away” martyr types.

R6 types stupid.

by Anonymousreply 8December 22, 2019 3:39 PM

OP (r5) Please follow up with select quotes from the suck up replies by the bootlicking new hires and their groveling middle managers. Please have it on our desk by Tuesday before the annual eggnog social in the lobby followed by our DL Yankee Swap and Ugly Christmas Sweater contest!

Best regards,

Wow, is it too late to nominate for the MOST BORING THREAD ON DL IN 2019?

by Anonymousreply 11December 22, 2019 3:48 PM

Will do R9.

The one that did reply all said in part, “Thank you!, and I’m proud to be a part of your stellar team.”

And yet, here you are R11.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2019 3:50 PM

Do not respond OP. Sending a thank you to a thank you is overdoing it.

by Anonymousreply 13December 22, 2019 3:52 PM

OTOH, OP, if your boss responds favorably to suck-ups and you're pretty sure you're going to see 45 out of 60 people doing the "Reply All" thing, in addition to finding a new job, you might want to do so in order to secure this one.

Barring that, as others have noted, it is not necessary

by Anonymousreply 14December 22, 2019 3:56 PM

Reply to him (not all) and say Merry Christmas or whatever holiday greeting you prefer because that is the right thing to do. I can't believe this takes so much thought??? Some of you are thinking about how a simple holiday greeting is going to advance your career as if the boss is planning to give a raise or promotion to the first 5 who reply or something. He just was wishing his employees a happy holiday because it is the polite thing to do. Sheesh.

by Anonymousreply 15December 22, 2019 3:58 PM

R15 Well bless your heart, dumpling. Things are a little more, shall we say "complicated" in the towers of big city Corporate America than they are at your lil ol' job as a check-out girl at the Piggly Wiggly.

by Anonymousreply 16December 22, 2019 4:07 PM

r15, It doesn't matter where you work you eliteist cunt. Just say Happy Holidays and get on with your fucking life.

by Anonymousreply 17December 22, 2019 4:19 PM

^^^R17 I don't do back-and-forth pissing contests because no one wants their thread high jacked, Miss Fucking Manners.

Oh, the irony.

by Anonymousreply 18December 22, 2019 4:57 PM

zzzzzzzzzzz

by Anonymousreply 19December 22, 2019 9:42 PM

I would not reply at all. I would delete this email from the boss right away.

[quote] Instead, wait for another time, for example, after your boss gives a speech at a corporate function, and send him a warm follow up e-mail about what a great job he did and how inspiring it was.

I would not do this, either.

It's enough that you have to read and listen to this bullshit. No need to reply.

by Anonymousreply 20December 22, 2019 9:57 PM

If the boss sends you a personal (not group) email, then you can reply.

by Anonymousreply 21December 22, 2019 9:58 PM

No, R11, that award is reserved for all Instaho threads.

by Anonymousreply 22December 22, 2019 11:16 PM

OP, of course you should respond. Your boss is probably frantically tapping the refresh button on his inbox and wondering why he has yet to hear back from you. I’ll get you started...

“Dear Mr. Howe-Leavenworth,

It is with a warm heart, moist hands, and full lips that I acknowledge receipt of your sincere holiday greetings. Without further ado, permit me to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah (or Chanukah, if you prefer), a Happy Diwali, or - should your beliefs tend toward a more pagan side - a Happy Solstice.

Ginny and I are so proud to work under you...”

by Anonymousreply 23December 22, 2019 11:45 PM

Do not reply to this. Do not mention later either. Your boss doesn't care. He just sent it to be polite. He probably gets 100 emails a day (like I do) and doesn't want to read anymore, especially bullshit lies thanking him for sending out a Happy Holiday email

Only an asskisser or someone desperate to be noticed/liked would reply to this email

by Anonymousreply 24December 23, 2019 12:04 AM

R24 is right.
