James Bond

I don't get it. My 16 month older brother loves and owns them all. I have tried and can never get thru one no matter who is playing him. Trying to watch "Moonraker" a little while ago. I know it's was a hit, the whole ad campaign is about outer space, I thought, well this may be cool. They don't even launch until an hour and a half into this boring mess. Did any of you fans feel ripped off?

Is James Bond a straight guy thing?

Moonraker is one of the worst films. Watch Goldfinger and get back to us.

by Anonymousreply 1December 21, 2019 10:22 PM

I'm a gay guy, who grew up watching (and loving) James Bonds films. Goldfinger, in particular, but also, Dr No, Thunderball and all the others.

by Anonymousreply 2December 21, 2019 10:24 PM

I grew up with Roger Moore as my Bond and he'll always by my Bond. Sort of like which ever actor played the Doctor on Dr. Who when you first got into it, is your Doctor.

by Anonymousreply 3December 21, 2019 10:26 PM

The Daniel Craig ones are boring action films. Bond works best with a nudge and a wink.

by Anonymousreply 4December 21, 2019 10:26 PM

Goldeneye

Goldfinger

The Man With The Golden Gun

Tomorrow Never Dies

For Your Eyes Only

The World Is Not Enough

All of those are great BOND films.

Plus, the Moby version of the James Bond Theme from 'Tomorrow Never Dies' is on the August 1998 Gap In-Store Playlist!

I liked "A View to a Kill" with Grace Jones and Christopher Walken. Ole Rog was pushing 60 in that one - I think his last Bond film. I also grew up with Roger Moore as my Bond.

by Anonymousreply 6December 21, 2019 10:42 PM

Who doesn’t love that catfight in From Russia With Love.

by Anonymousreply 7December 21, 2019 10:46 PM

Saint Etienne submitted a song to be the title theme for 1997's 'Tomorrow Never Dies' but they were rejected for Sheryl Crow (and k.d. lang!).

There are a few I can watch, but often it's a snooze. For real. If there's a Bondathon playing on tv one evening, I'm happy, as I know I can now fall asleep sooner rather than later.

by Anonymousreply 10December 21, 2019 11:40 PM

The Roger Moore ones are garbage. Sean Connery just nailed the sexy and sarcastic side of Bond.

by Anonymousreply 11December 21, 2019 11:48 PM

[quote] Is James Bond a straight guy thing?

Not after you've seen Daniel Craig in swim trunks

I've always like the Bond films. Yes, some are better than others (and some are just downright bad), but I've never watched one and thought "I hate the world".

They have always been a reflection of their time. Connery's Bond could be, at best, called a dickhead womanizer. Moore's movies were just dripping with a very 70's and 80's feel. During that time, leading men did not look like Chris Hemsworth. They were slim, suave, and a little creepy.

Bond has (IMHO) adapted amazingly well to the tastes of the time. Not always successfully, but they give the audience for the most part, what they want.

The Sean Connery ones a good. The Roger Moore ones are not. The rest have a few good scenes in them but not much more.

Just watch Connery and then stop.

Btw, the actor the producers desperately wanted for the role was Steve Reeves. He turned them down - said it wasn't enough money. He then turned down an Italian producer who wanted him to do some spaghetti westerns. When Reeves passed, they turned to some guy named Clint Eastwood.

Wow, R15, talk about missing the boat.

by Anonymousreply 18December 22, 2019 1:47 AM

Title song. The credit sequence. The car chase. The villain. The babes. These are hallmarks. Connery was suave and cynical. Moore was comedy. The others don't matter.

Try Octopussy.

by Anonymousreply 22December 22, 2019 8:22 AM

James Bond is very much a straigght guy thing, OP.

The only ones I like: Goldeneye. Very 90s. Much less macho than all the others. Fun and cute/stylish in a way. Casino Royale. An excellent reboot. Very well done. Rather dark and melancholy. Licence to kill. Can't remember much of it, but most enjoyable among the "boring" Bonds.

All in all, I find the Roger Moore ones more light-hearted than all the boring ones with Sean Connery. Still, James Bond... Urgh.

Except for Goldeneye.

by Anonymousreply 23December 22, 2019 10:10 AM

Some of the songs are excellent.

OP here, I did. I worked in a movie theater and it played it in full 70MM and booming stereophonic sound. Still could not get it thru it. If you want to check out a goof, in the opening when Bond is in the mini-plane when it goes thru the hangar you can see the pole it is attached to on a track. starts at 5:48

The only one I've ever seen is 1973's "Live and Let Die".

Isn't this the one with the most famous song?

The only one I like enough to rewatch is Goldeneye.

by Anonymousreply 29December 22, 2019 1:03 PM

I've always been a fan of the entire series. It's fascinating how adaptable the franchise turned out to be. None of the Bond actors 'stirred my loins', so that was never the reason for me to watch. Growing up in the later Moore years, I started with Octopussy and View to a Kill. From there I followed all future Bonds and went back to the sixties and seventies.

There are great Bonds in every era, except Dalton's. Besides the most wooden interpretation of Bond, I didn't care for the Miami Vice feel of his second movie.

My favorites: From Russia with Love, In her Majesty's Secret Service, The Spy who loved me, GoldenEye, Casino Royale and Skyfall.

The greatest disappointments: You only live twice, The man with the Golden Gun, License to kill, Tomorrow never dies, Spectre.

by Anonymousreply 30December 22, 2019 1:29 PM

I fucking hated Roger Moore as Bond with his fucking hairless body.

by Anonymousreply 31December 22, 2019 1:49 PM

I was eight when my father and uncle took me to my first 'adult' movie, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. I still remember the opening ski sequence and being stunned. The parachute in his ski-back pack and Carly Simon's singing blew my eight-year-old mind. After that my father or uncle would take me to the BOND films. How I loved them. I still do.

Since then, I've always seen the BOND films in theaters specifically for the opening sequence and the end sequence and the title theme. I enjoy the espionage, stupid villains, the stunts and the campiness.

No matter whatever Carly Simon does, writes, sings or says for the rest of her life, I will always associate her with THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.

by Anonymousreply 32December 22, 2019 7:10 PM

My favorites:

CASINO ROYALE GOLDFINGER LIVE AND LET DIE GOLDENEYE DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

by Anonymousreply 33December 22, 2019 7:11 PM

My partner absolutely loves Bond movies. I goad him about them being the definition of science fiction (he "hates" scifi).

by Anonymousreply 34December 22, 2019 7:25 PM

My dad and I don't "bond" on many things (yeah I said it), but James Bond movies are something we've always like going to together. I have my favorites from each actor (except Dalton - who wasn't bad, but they were just meh). I always look forward to seeing the new one with my father.

Love him or hate him, Daniel Craig managed to really bring new life to this character. Brosnan was fine, but audiences just want a gritter version of Bond these days, and Craig delivered it.

by Anonymousreply 35December 22, 2019 10:33 PM

R35, Not that I disagree with you but if you look at the box office, Brosnan's Bond movies were on a continuous upward trend moneywise. Granted Craig kept it going. So I'm not sure if it's the grittier version or just the nature of the movie market now.

by Anonymousreply 36December 22, 2019 10:46 PM

No, Ian Fleming is not a straight guy thing. His writings are not for simple minds.

by Anonymousreply 37December 22, 2019 10:48 PM

Loved Roger Moore's Bond - the coolest

by Anonymousreply 38December 22, 2019 10:50 PM

It was moderately a straight guy thing, but I too used to BOND with my father over the 007 books, films and movies. Then Daniel Craig became James Bond and it's no longer just for straight men. There's a lot of scenes of shirtless Daniel Craig. It also seems like the producers are trying to appeal to gay guys too.

by Anonymousreply 39December 23, 2019 12:52 AM

If I were to rate the ones I really enjoy (starting with my favorite), it would go like this:

The Spy Who Loved Me

The Living Daylights

Licensed to Kill

The Man with the Golden Gun

You Only Live Twice

Thunderball

A View to a Kill

Never Say Never Again

There are 3 that I really don' t like:

Live and Let Die

Diamonds Are Forever

For Your Eyes Only

by Anonymousreply 40December 23, 2019 1:14 AM

I'm not 100% gay and always loved Bond films. The originals were the best, especially the first three. Moore was a lousy James Bond and was too old for the role. Also recently learned he's a right-winger. See what a good judge oharacter i am?

The early Bond films are super camp (Goldfingaaaaahhhh!) and young Sean Connery was hot

by Anonymousreply 43January 23, 2020 4:32 AM

I grew up on the Sean Connery Bond movies. They were great - sexy, thrilling, funny, hip. I lost interest when Roger Moore took over, and haven't really watched any of them since.

I remember when the song "Nobody Does It Better" came out with whichever film it was

& it was quite a sexy song, the lyrics

"Nobody does it quite as good as you...baby, you're the best"

& thinking of Roger Moore and it seemed so incongruous,

by Anonymousreply 44January 23, 2020 4:35 AM

sorry I'll re-do that with the quotes that I forgot

I've seen them all except the first (comedic) version of Casino Royale, Never Say Never Again, License to Kill... and oddly enough, Spectre.

The actual Ian Fleming novels need to be done again, but as period pieces.

Re: MOONRAKER: Lois Chile’s puts about every movie she’s in to sleep (except when she herself is killed early on, like in COMA and DEATH ON THE NILE.)

by Anonymousreply 47January 23, 2020 5:29 AM

I'm gay and always loved these films. I think for me it's nostalgia, and until I read a few other posts here I don't think I realised it, but it was definitely a bonding moment with my father too. He introduced them to me when I was a pre-teen, between Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Even though I can tell you know which ones are great and which ones are bad, I do enjoy them all as a whole. My least favourite would be Licence to Kill for the same reasons above, that it feels very unlike a Bond film and more like something out of Miami Vice.

I'll also be honest and say I've spilled a lot of seed in the past over imagining being fucked by Bond as played by Sean Connery.

R46 I agree, I'd like to see that too, as television even, I think would be really good. Some parts of the books would still be difficult to do though. I am currently rereading the novels chronologically and have just finished Live and Let Die. I'm not sure what Fleming was on when he decided to try and dictate the speech of black Americans. The excuse that things were different back then doesn't even cut it, because it bares no resemblance to anything of this earth:

'Aw, honey,' the girl was anxious, 'dey ain't no use tryin' tuh git mad at me. Ah done nuthen tuh give yuh recasion tuh ack dat way. Ah jist thunk you mebbe preshiate a ringside at da Par'dise 'nstead of settin' hyah countin' yo troubles. Why, honey, yuh all knows Ah wudden fall fo' dat richcrat ack' of Birdie Johnson. No sir. He don' mean nuthen tuh me. Him duh wusstes' man 'n Harlem, dawg bite me effn he ain't. All da same, he permis me da bestess seats 'nda house 'n Ah sez let's us go set 'n dem, 'n have us a beer 'n a good time. Cmon, honey. Let's git out of hyah. Yuh done look so swell 'n Ah jist wan' mah frens tuh see usn together.'

by Anonymousreply 48January 23, 2020 11:15 AM

Roger Moore was the worst Bond, by far.

Oddly, George Lazenby was excellent, but he gets little attention because he only made one and then crashed out of the scene.

Daniel Craig and Sean Connery are the best, and so are their movies, but the first ones, with Connery, are probably the winners. The producers didnt want Connery -- their first choice for Bond was Steve Reeves, but he had just finished doing Hercules movies and didn't want another series. And, they were offering him far less money than he was getting for his Italian epics.

by Anonymousreply 49January 23, 2020 11:24 AM

George Lazenby couldn't act, that's why he never did anything else. He looked the part and did his own stunts, but he was not an actor.

by Anonymousreply 50January 23, 2020 4:30 PM

He could act enough for James fucking Bond.
