Obtaining a PhD is not like going to "grad school" for say medicine (four years), or law ( 3 years); but rather a long slog that can run twelve or more years.

Going for a PhD requires extensive research in order to make up the required substantial and unique contribution to human knowledge required for a dissertation that will get that coveted degree. Hence you typically find only certain sorts of persons even bothering seriously. Others butt surf, travel or whatever while "gathering material for research....."., for decades while "working on my PhD".

Much will depend upon what sort of funding PhD student receives. If he or she lucks out with a generous benefactor, fellowship grants or whatever they not have a fire under their behinds to finish things quickly.

Actually, 12 years is truly excessive for a PhD, speaking as someone who is a university professor with a PhD in science. If someone applied for a tenure-track position at my department and submitted a CV that showed they took 12 years to complete a PhD in our area, all kinds of alarm bells would start ringing among the members of the hiring committee UNLESS there are genuinely extenuating circumstances: a serious illness, serious family/financial circumstances, etc. Very few top granting agencies would extend a graduate scholarship past 4 years under normal circumstances and most supervisors would prefer to graduate 2-3 regular cycle PhD students that they could put on their own grant applications instead of spending all that money on someone who'll take 12 years to produce publishable research. I don't know the circumstances of this particular case but, by the look of it, it is very unusual.

Also, R66, "granting agencies" don't typically come into play for grad funding outside the sciences; a History student would more likely have had internal fellowships, possibly combined with external for a couple of years at most. The latter would be in the final couple of years; as the UPenn History website says, "Nearly all History Ph.D. students are recipients of four- or five-year fellowships awarded by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences upon admission." 7 years is probably the typical duration for a history PhD. (I've known people who took 17 and 19 years however! Generally nutty people). 3 years of course work, 6 months for exams and research proposal and the next 3 or so years doing research and writing the dissertation. Those who do American history sometimes finish in 5 years, while those who study other parts of the world can take much longer because they have to do research overseas and learn 2 languages normally. Any credible institution will pay tuition and provide a stipend for their students for the first 5 years - and there are still many grants offered to fund the research phase. So, I don't think he had to resort to sex work to pay the bills while a grad student.
