LOL! Robert DeNiro snubbed again for Lead Actor.
I remember reading that the supporting actor cathegory always goes to veterans at the oscars but this year noone near to be young will be even nominated

by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 11, 2019 2:32 PM |
They are not going to give Joe Pesci another Oscar when he a) already has one b) is not going to act anymore. An Oscar is an investment.
Brad Pitt will get the Oscar.

Isn't the story of Bombshell about Gretchen Carlson ? So how is Nicole a supporting performance ?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 11, 2019 2:36 PM |
Who liked Rocketman really, though. Taron Edgerton has no business being there.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 11, 2019 2:37 PM |
R5 Pitt is the front runner, but don’t count Pesci completely out. Repeating an Oscar happens and Pesci hasn’t won in nearly 30 years. Ali just one two in three years. If the Irishman does well with voters, look out.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 11, 2019 2:49 PM |
Pesci should get it. His is really a supporting performance where as Pitt is a co lead.

Pitt is a co-lead, but the Supporting Actor trophy has evolved over the years from rewarding character actors in true supporting roles to awarding co-leads when it's beneficial to the films' awards slate.

AMPAS just got the Little Women screener on Saturday, but I don't know if they did an earlier mailing to SAG. It's not yet available on the app.

Al Pacino should have gone leading. Why the hell not. Might have even won.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 11, 2019 4:07 PM |
She should be, R24.
I’m also really glad that Lupita placed here. I was completely bowled over by her performance in Us. The movie itself was uneven and I had A LOT of unanswered questions about the mechanics of that world. But her performance, especially in light of the last five minutes revelation, was phenomenal.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 11, 2019 4:08 PM |
DeNiro's scene in Irishman when he realizes he's going to kill Hoffa is the best of work of his career. I suspect he'll be nominated for an Oscar.

The movie company mistakenly submitted our beloved Kathy Bates for Lead instead of Supporting, most likely costing her a nomination. If so, which of those Supporting ladies benefitted from this?
The same thing happened when they messed up Meryl Streep's submission for Adaptation in 2002, wrongly putting her forward for Lead. This likely cancelled out her other Lead submission for The Hours that same year and she failed to be nominated at all! Do we think she had the poor schmuck fired?

by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 11, 2019 6:55 PM |
So I guess Joaquin, Renee, Brad and Laura are solid front runners right now. In second place would probably be Adam, Charlize, Joe and Jennifer. I wouldn’t be surprised if Charlize pulled it off with the anti Trump fever running high. I’m sure Bombshell skewers Fox News. She’s probably the only one that can pull an upset if Renée wins at the globes and SAG.

Charlize isn’t even that good.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 11, 2019 7:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 11, 2019 7:28 PM |
I think Renee Z. for "Judy" is a shoo-in, and also Brad Pitt for "Once Upon a Time." I think the others are more open. Joaquin is overdue, but it's a comic book role, and he's not been winning many awards yet throughout awards season so far. Laura Dern is also overdue, but she's also not been winning many awards for this role this season.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 11, 2019 7:35 PM |
Bates doesn't deserve a nomination for Richard Jewell. It's a nothing role with one decent scene, but nothing spectacular.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 11, 2019 7:41 PM |
R62 she won NY Film critics supporting actress. Banderas won in NY and LA in lead, but no sag nom has finished his chances. Heath won for the Joker, so no one can make your argument of its just a comic book movie anymore. Driver could upset Phoenix, but Phoenix has the overdue factor.

What is with the love for Lupita, Bale and Taron? The latter two don't belong in contention this year. Good performances, but in this year of many great ones it's shameful to waste those two spots. No Antonio, Hopkins, Pryce, De Niro or Sandler? Eddie Murphy would have been a change-up, if only for his career level contributions.

Agree with you re Phoenix, it looks to finally be his year. But I'm not so quick to dismiss Banderas or another actor from a less commercial outing to take Bale or Egerton's place.

R68 agreed about Banderas. I meant he won’t be winning the Oscar but still should get a nomination. I think the five will be Adam, Antonio, Leo, Joaquin and Jonathan Pryce. DeNiro has lost all the momentum to get into Oscar race now I think.

R75 when he was alive and filming it, there was talk of Ledger you winning it. And lot of people felt he was robbed for Brokeback. If was alive, I believe he still would’ve won. Black Panther won the SAG ensemble last year, so a best pic win for a comic book film will probably happen soon. Joker is a massive hit and Phoenix will be on nomination 4. Phoenix is winning.

I was too R19. The movie was kind of uneven and had plot holes that you could drive a truck through, but her performance was fantastic.
Netflix is just going to have to buy a movie chain (even if just a small one) R20 if awards are important to them. They are putting out a lot of good stuff (as well as some crap like any movie studio).

I look at it like this r52 the stage does revivals of classics not because enough people haven't seen the stories, but because as classics they demand actual acting skill from those portraying these well known characters. If you are shit as an actor, it's going to show when you try to do classic pieces. It's an opportunity to showcase an actors talent and the directors talent. I don't mind it.

R106 I never thought Hollywood as a film with Oscar winning or nominated performances. But it looks like Brad will win. I’m cool with it. He’s improved as an actor the last ten years. He will bring star power to that Oscar stage. Voters won’t be able to resist getting him up there.

No. Not any award can be bought. The way the voting system works for SAGs, Oscars, Emmys and Grammys... no way they can be bought unless you have unlimited funds so you can send your bribe money to thousands of individuals all over the world.
That is just a cheap excuse when people don’t like who is nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | December 13, 2019 12:18 PM |
Why are we knocking on Phoenix? Banderas 100% deserves a nomination, I think it’s nuts that the SAGs didn’t nominate him, but it is not Phoenix who should be knocked out of the race, it is Egerton, who has no business even being in the race.
He had the edge though, being that his movie came out in May so he has had all year to campaign and plant seeds.

The Best Actor noms at the Oscars should be
Antonio Banderas
Adam Driver
Eddie Murphy
Joaquin Phoenix
Robert De Niro
