I Feel Confused and Unhappy About New Lesbian Television
Have any of you heard about "Work in Progress?"
I want to like the lead character, but can someone explain to me why a self-professed dyke (her own words) would date a self-described "trans man?" I realize there isn't one dick between the two of them, but either lesbian erasure is happening, or some kind of denial of transgenderism...anyhow I don't get it. And in the trailer every gay man is decidedly GAY presented...like they walked out of POSE.
On the L Word reboot they feature a trans man as a supporting character who only dates cis men. The storyline seems more wish fulfillment than accurate.
And why is lesbian space being taken up by that story, anyway?

Yes, I heard about that one, but the summary didn't entice me to watch it at all. Figured the new L Word would be like that as well, just by looking at the promo shot. It's just how it is these days, I guess.

Nothing about the show looked interesting.

It has Julia Sweeney! OP, I read a bit about the program. Maybe it's trying open minds and teach. About trans, regardless that the young woman labels herself a trans man, she's female. There's body modification surgery, but a woman will always be a female (XX) and a man will always be male (XY). Gender reassignment surgery does not exist. A female will never be able to impregnate a woman and a male will never be able to conceive a child, so no reason for confusion. The best programs on the topic I've seen are 2 episodes of "South Park". Maybe in "Work in Progress" they scissor pussies.

As a 40 year old gay/bi woman, I feel like "lesbian" culture has really shifted. I was having a conversation the other day and my friend was explaining how great it was that trans culture is now represented in the new L word and there's more multi-culturalism. Also, the gay scene I was part of 15 years ago has turned into more of a focus on queer/gender neutral/non binary (I don't even know what half of these terms mean).
I was out at a gay bar recently and everyone I met announced their preference (she/her, him). I feel disconnected and miss old school lesbian culture. I honestly feel like I have more in common with straight men these days.
I'm not sure I'm even relating to your post, however the lesbian culture has really shifted into something I feel that less represents me. Apparently the old L word was "too femme" which is bullshit!

R4 this is OP. I think you are relating to my post. I have a question, did any of the people who you met and stated their pronouns even need to do that? I mean would most of them have warranted a "No shit?" response to how they identify?

It's all propoganda intended to dictate your identity to you, you don't have to like it. It's probably psychologically healthier for you to reject it.

It is Queer/Trans creep into LG shows. It is confusing, and unhealthy.

I just watched the first few episodes of Work In Progress. The series starts out very funny but gets somewhat too “issues oriented” as it wears on. Overall it’s a funny, interesting show and I’ll stick with it.

Lesbian erasure is definitely happening. It breaks my heart to see cis teen girls harassed on places like Reddit by men who think they are women. It’s disgusting and scary. Teen girls are now led to believe they must transition to be accepted. My friend’s daughter is 12 and has severe anxiety over it. There’s lots of kids who are considering suicide over it. I could go on and on about this but we are at a breaking point here with this nonsense.

XX = female
XY = male
XX + XY = straight
XX + XX = lesbian
XY + XY = gay man
(Ninety nine percent of bisexuals are either straight women who want to seem cool but end up with a guy or gay men who aren't completely out yet, so they can shove themselves into whichever equation fits them at the moment. Intersex are an infinitely small number of people with a genetic abnormality.)
The end.

"Work in Progress" only works to the extent it does because of Abby McEnany, who is hilarious in person.
The character "Abby" is dating a trans man because that's what the real-life Abby ended up doing, because she's such a weirdo she hasn't had a regular relationship with a woman in years.
I know they're going for a fish-out-of-water story with a stone butch like Abby dealing with the new genderfluid Chicago dating scene, but honestly Abby would be dynamite as a modern sidekick a la Rhoda. She may be too quirky to be the central lead in a mainstream show, but she is wildly talented, very funny and a very nice (though self-admittedly neurotic) person.

FTMs are mostly a genus of lesbian.

I have to say i have given very little thought to new lesbian television.

As a different lesbian 40 year old, I'm really tired of this MTF trans shite.
Back in the day, we all knew stone butch lesbians who were basically trans (without the body hair), and they were lovely people--as are all FTM trans I've met and know.

Watched an episode and found the lead character annoying as hell and kind of an asshole. Everyone and everything was just SO BOTHERSOME to her, and everyone was SO annoying to her and she was SO put upon. It was like watching an unfunny and charisma-free version of Curb.

What a tremendous amount of anti-trans bullshit.
You know what I didn't like about the show? That some middle aged schlemiel somehow attracts someone much younger and more attractive--like a Woody Allen movie, or pretty much any crap sitcom where some fat slug is married to slim pretty woman.
Meanwhile, this bullshit: "I Feel Confused and Unhappy About New Lesbian Television"
I'm thinking you're very happy to have another chance to trash inclusive culture because down deep you hate yourself and dumping on others is you doing "your best."
