Geraldine McEwan was an underrated Miss Marple
I am rewatchjng her Marple episodes and she is terrific at bring out the character's warmth and relatability. I know Miss M is described slightly differently in the novels and technically Joan Hickson may be a closer version but I think McEwan is much more fun to watch! I also find Hickson's interpretation too staid and cold, not that entertaining. Sure the interpretations take more libertities but oh well...
What does everyone else think?

Her first episode was very bad compared to how good she was later on. Very twitchy and fussy. And the I’M NOT A VIRGIN! I FUCKED A MARRIED MAN! stuff was very cringey.
But apart from The Body In The Library she settled in very quickly. A lot of fun.

She was a bitch. Her Miss Marple pushed a guy, she knew couldn't swim, into a lake just to prove her point.

I also prefer McEwan. I feel she has the right character and energy for the role with that quiet but knowing smile, always self-deprecating but two steps ahead of everyone else. Lordy, now I need to watch some Marple episodes again!!

If only McEwan had given Miss Marple a wide berth, and continued playing Lucia, of "Mapp and Lucia" fame, a role she was born to play, we'd be the better for it. She is all wrong for Miss Marple, the smug archness she portrays is quite off-putting and irritating, as is her voice and the sly asides and near-winks. There is not an ounce of charm in her Marple portrayals.
Gerry, honey, take it from Agatha Christie herself, when she prompted Joan Hickson to one day play Miss Marple. You cannot ask for a more resounding testimonial than that.

Joan Hickson's Jane Marple was a dried up old prune, devoid of charm or guile. At least McEwan's got to experience a cock once!

Geraldine McEwan was a magnificent actress. In the 90s, she appeared on Broadway in Ionesco's The Chairs. The first time I saw it, I was passed in during previews. The next two times I saw it, I paid. The Chairs is something most folks would pay to avoid. She made it unforgettable.

She was very good but reading the fans lambaste her characterization was frustrating. The stories were interesting and she did very well with the character.

I've posted this before, but it's always relevant to a discussion of Miss Marple portrayals, so here goes (yet again):
In a review of McEwan's Marple at (I think) IMDB, one reviewer stated that, when Hickson's Marple discovers a clue, it's because people like and respect her, talk to her, and tell her things.
But, when McEwan's Marple discovers a clue, it's because she stumbles upon it while digging through the dustbin looking for something to eat. He also speculated that she smelled strongly of cat urine.

She was incredible in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and The Magdalen Sisters. The Marple stories didn't do that much for me, but I really liked her.

I liked Geraldine McEwan very much in this role, but I don't like her in everything. She ruined "The Barchester Chronicles" with a completely over-the-top and bizarrely unfunny performance as Mrs. Proudie, one of the funniest characters in British literature.
