I think it's time we revisit "Cruel Intentions" (1999) 20 years later and how much fun it was back when it came out
I remember this film was so controversial at the time because of who the stars were, and they all had very young fanbases.
I was in Middle School when this came out, and I wanted to see this so bad, but my mom would not let me. After it came out on VHS and DVD she rented it and after watching it decided it was not so bad and let me and my sister watch it, and we loved it. We both loved Sarah and Ryan, and Reese (but not as much as we would later). I also liked Selma Blair, but my sister didn't care about her.
I thought the movie was so sexy and scandalous at 12! But now I see it was tame as fuck, but fun! I love Sarah in this... she is so good at being a mean cold evil bitch... and Reese was so sweet in this. You believed she was a wholesome, sweet virgin girl (that was some acting!), and Ryan, well... he can not act (I even saw that at 12) but he sure did look pretty. My mom bought the movie for me when I was around 13 and I would pause at Ryan showering and jerk off to his ass. All the time. Ugh.
Those were the days.
The ending is still iconic because of the song, and karma was a real bitch.
Did you like it?

The ending scene was the best ever, with the perfect song.

R4 so not much acting? While Reese was acting her ass off as the sweetest virgin ever!

R3 It was fun to see Josh Jackson play gay, but he did camp it up to an uncomfortable degree IMO.

Josh Jackson played gay how all straight men play gay, at least before Brokeback.

Great movie. I even bought the soundtrack. You can see the actual mansion where they lived on the Upper East Side. The clothes rocked too. This movie had great style.

Mansions in NYC just don’t work.

I loved it when it first came out and, like others, bought the soundtrack and DVD (it was the early days of DVD, so it was so exciting to have deleted scenes and commentaries). I re-watched it again for the first time in nearly 20 years when they re-released it in theaters for a week a little while back and it was such an odd experience. Some parts aged well and some parts felt hopelessly precious and silly. Sarah Michelle Gellar's performance definitely held up, though. I'm still surprised that she didn't become a bonafide movie star. She's gorgeous, charismatic, and had a lot more range than people gave her credit for. Maybe she'll have one of those great post-40's career rejuvenations.
Oh, and Ryan's ass is still one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life. It looks like it was carved in marble.

She was busy with Buffy and got married. Then went on to have kids. She can't seem to catch a break lately. It's a good thing she's got her baking business to focus on.

SMG’s film career peaked in 2004 with The Grudge, and it went sharply downhill from there.

I saw the Cruel Intentions musical last March while visiting NYC.
It was a fun ‘90s jukebox musical with the same level of camp as Rock of Ages.
But... I had always hoped, when they got around to making a musical of Cruel Intentions, it would have had more of a Chess tone.

I love SMG. Say what you will about her from 1994 to 2004, she had a fantastic career from All My Children to Buffy to I Know What You Did Last Summer to Cruel Intentions. She has a great presence onscreen. And when she's playing a bitch as she played Kendall on AMC and here in Cruel Intentions, she was phenomenal.
I love Selma Blair in her supporting role. And Sean Patrick Thomas was a sexy fucker in his undies. It's a great cast.

SMG has had zero luck picking scripts since Buffy. A series of bad movies and bad TV shows: That will derail any career.

Bloody good movie!
There was just one thing that didn't read true for a teen cast... Ryan Phillippe being so jaded that he was bored by the idea of seducing a beautiful virgin and having to be talked into it. Boys that age are just too horny to be that jaded about getting laid, that attitude was written for a much older man and is only believable when played by someone old enough to be sick of seductions. A minor thing in an overall good movie, but it's still there.

They could probably sell the show today, but it would be easier to merge the themes into the new gossip girl that HBO is creating. Unfortunately, that’s how has the same boring show runner from The OC and The CWs PG-13 GG, that left out any real gay characters.

r53 don't get me started, The OC was the shit. But Joshua Schwartz refused The CWs offer to pick up the show. He really seemed to give it a Bryan Murphy slow death. Whoever thought it was a good idea to kill Marissa Cooper without a backup girl was stupid. It had so much potential with the introduction of the younger teenager, but they waited to like half way through the last season to start that process. That show helped my lonely ass get through High School in my podunk town. Seth was the perfect boyfriend.
Josh Schwartz removed every gay character arch on GG. Serina's brother just disappears somewhere in their family's 2 story penthouse.
Back to "Cruel Intentions", did any of you watch the deleted scenes on the DVD? They actually had an extended cut of the gay blackmail scene. After Sebastian extorts Greg for info he says something like, now why don't you take care of me or something and steps up to him, saying, "Go ahead. Touch it". The Dawson's Creek guy looks up suprised. Kid you not sounds like a porn scene. Greg leans in to give him head, then Sebastian says just kidding and Greg looks destroyed. It was hot, but problematic. The director cut it because he said it made Sebastian too cruel and wouldn't work for his redemption arc.
Sorry I cant find the clip online so here is the movie cut, 2:50 mark.

R57 I never liked Marissa so I had no problem with her being killed off. And I thought they did a decent job adding in Taylor Townsend. As much as I love Seth + Summer, Seth wasn't a great bf. And I think the only gay character was Luke's dad in season 1....?

I LOVED this movies when it came out. Did you see the deleted scene where Kathryn says she doesn't fuck losers? Every single time I hear "Bittersweet Symphony" the instant memory comes back of the scene where SMG storms out of the funeral and sees that everyone knows what a bad person she is from Sebastian's copied journals and then she cries. And yes, I still enjoy that movie years later! Nostalgia.
Except Ryan Phillippe is the biggest Debbie Downer actor in every film from that era. I do NOT get his appeal. He sulked all the time for no reason and repeated this for I Know What You Did Last Summer (except he's more aggressively sulky in that one). Did straight women think this was hot? It was really annoying to me and made me question his acting range.
