I think it's time we revisit "Cruel Intentions" (1999) 20 years later and how much fun it was back when it came out

I remember this film was so controversial at the time because of who the stars were, and they all had very young fanbases.

I was in Middle School when this came out, and I wanted to see this so bad, but my mom would not let me. After it came out on VHS and DVD she rented it and after watching it decided it was not so bad and let me and my sister watch it, and we loved it. We both loved Sarah and Ryan, and Reese (but not as much as we would later). I also liked Selma Blair, but my sister didn't care about her.

I thought the movie was so sexy and scandalous at 12! But now I see it was tame as fuck, but fun! I love Sarah in this... she is so good at being a mean cold evil bitch... and Reese was so sweet in this. You believed she was a wholesome, sweet virgin girl (that was some acting!), and Ryan, well... he can not act (I even saw that at 12) but he sure did look pretty. My mom bought the movie for me when I was around 13 and I would pause at Ryan showering and jerk off to his ass. All the time. Ugh.

Those were the days.

The ending is still iconic because of the song, and karma was a real bitch.

Did you like it?

The ending scene was the best ever, with the perfect song.

by Anonymousreply 1December 4, 2019 12:22 AM

I like this movie and love the ending. Sarah was at her best here.

by Anonymousreply 2December 4, 2019 12:48 AM

I like seeing Josh Jackson in bed with Eric Mabius

by Anonymousreply 3December 4, 2019 12:50 AM

I bet SMG was playing the closest version of her true self here.

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2019 12:50 AM

R4 so not much acting? While Reese was acting her ass off as the sweetest virgin ever!

by Anonymousreply 5December 4, 2019 12:53 AM

R3 It was fun to see Josh Jackson play gay, but he did camp it up to an uncomfortable degree IMO.

by Anonymousreply 6December 4, 2019 12:55 AM

Josh Jackson played gay how all straight men play gay, at least before Brokeback.

by Anonymousreply 7December 4, 2019 12:57 AM

Ryan’s ass belongs in the gay hall of fame.

by Anonymousreply 8December 4, 2019 1:07 AM

I never realized how much Emma Roberts in Scream Queens ripped off SMG's performance here until I rewatched this.

by Anonymousreply 9December 4, 2019 1:11 AM

Great movie. I even bought the soundtrack. You can see the actual mansion where they lived on the Upper East Side. The clothes rocked too. This movie had great style.

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2019 1:14 AM

I never ever ever once thought to myself “if I buy a mansion I want one in NYC.”

Mansions in NYC just don’t work.

by Anonymousreply 11December 4, 2019 1:19 AM

I can not imagine buying a mansion in NYC either. Seems so ... non NYC. Mansions are for LA.

I think the reason Josh was blonde was from the character he played on Urban Legends

by Anonymousreply 14December 4, 2019 3:26 AM

Joshua Jackson has the type of face that you associate with a meaty butt..^^

by Anonymousreply 15December 4, 2019 3:29 AM

I loved it when it first came out and, like others, bought the soundtrack and DVD (it was the early days of DVD, so it was so exciting to have deleted scenes and commentaries). I re-watched it again for the first time in nearly 20 years when they re-released it in theaters for a week a little while back and it was such an odd experience. Some parts aged well and some parts felt hopelessly precious and silly. Sarah Michelle Gellar's performance definitely held up, though. I'm still surprised that she didn't become a bonafide movie star. She's gorgeous, charismatic, and had a lot more range than people gave her credit for. Maybe she'll have one of those great post-40's career rejuvenations.

Oh, and Ryan's ass is still one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life. It looks like it was carved in marble.

by Anonymousreply 16December 4, 2019 3:34 AM

[quote] [R4] so not much acting?

Definitely not. She gave the once-gorgeous Freddie Prinze Jr. premature gray hair and wrinkles.

by Anonymousreply 17December 4, 2019 3:38 AM

She was busy with Buffy and got married. Then went on to have kids. She can't seem to catch a break lately. It's a good thing she's got her baking business to focus on.

by Anonymousreply 18December 4, 2019 6:09 AM

SMG’s film career peaked in 2004 with The Grudge, and it went sharply downhill from there.

by Anonymousreply 19December 4, 2019 6:14 AM

I saw the Cruel Intentions musical last March while visiting NYC.

It was a fun ‘90s jukebox musical with the same level of camp as Rock of Ages.

But... I had always hoped, when they got around to making a musical of Cruel Intentions, it would have had more of a Chess tone.

by Anonymousreply 20December 4, 2019 6:18 AM

I love SMG. Say what you will about her from 1994 to 2004, she had a fantastic career from All My Children to Buffy to I Know What You Did Last Summer to Cruel Intentions. She has a great presence onscreen. And when she's playing a bitch as she played Kendall on AMC and here in Cruel Intentions, she was phenomenal.

I love Selma Blair in her supporting role. And Sean Patrick Thomas was a sexy fucker in his undies. It's a great cast.

by Anonymousreply 21December 4, 2019 6:20 AM

Kristen Bell has the career SMG should have had. Discuss.

by Anonymousreply 22December 4, 2019 6:28 AM

I always wondered where Kristen Bell’s career came from.

by Anonymousreply 23December 4, 2019 6:30 AM

Don't get me wrong, I love Kristen Bell and have since Veronica Mars. But they both played tough as nails characters on female-driven shows on the mini networks around the same time.

by Anonymousreply 24December 4, 2019 6:40 AM

Reese was on her way to stardom.

by Anonymousreply 25December 4, 2019 6:51 AM

I never understood who gave Annette, Sebastian's car?

by Anonymousreply 26December 4, 2019 6:52 AM

Controversial? You millennials are such pussies. It was OK, but hardly controversial.

by Anonymousreply 27December 4, 2019 6:53 AM

Go shove some more coke up your asshole, Stevie.

by Anonymousreply 28December 4, 2019 6:58 AM

What language are the subtitles?

by Anonymousreply 29December 4, 2019 6:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 30December 4, 2019 6:58 AM

Got the undies on just in time.

Ryan was otherworldly beautiful in this movie, but Eric Mabius also had a tight body and very pretty face. Shame looked good on him.

This is definitely one of my favourite teen movies of all time, I loved SMG's performance, the kiss scene is iconic as fuck and yes Ryan's butt was the stuff of wet dreams.

My favourite line "In English? I'll fuck your brains out." It was so deliciously scandalous at the time!

by Anonymousreply 33December 4, 2019 10:00 AM

Didn’t Tara Reid make a cameo?

by Anonymousreply 34December 4, 2019 3:33 PM

R34 yeah she was Swoozie Kurtz's daughter in the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 35December 4, 2019 4:34 PM

Did they ever release that alternate ending where it was just a confrontation in the bathroom with Reese and SMG? That always sounded a bit anti-climactic.

by Anonymousreply 36December 4, 2019 5:23 PM

SMG did return to do a pilot for a TV series of this a few years ago. I heard the pilot leaked somehow and it wasn't bad. I can't even remember what network it was for.

by Anonymousreply 37December 4, 2019 5:24 PM

SMG has had zero luck picking scripts since Buffy. A series of bad movies and bad TV shows: That will derail any career.

by Anonymousreply 38December 4, 2019 5:27 PM

Bloody good movie!

There was just one thing that didn't read true for a teen cast... Ryan Phillippe being so jaded that he was bored by the idea of seducing a beautiful virgin and having to be talked into it. Boys that age are just too horny to be that jaded about getting laid, that attitude was written for a much older man and is only believable when played by someone old enough to be sick of seductions. A minor thing in an overall good movie, but it's still there.

by Anonymousreply 39December 4, 2019 5:52 PM

there was also a deleted scene where Sebastian walks in on Greg and Blaine in bed and tries to get Greg to give him a bj

by Anonymousreply 40December 4, 2019 6:12 PM

R39 not when you have been doing it since so young.

I know someone that was drinking since he was 12. He’s only 26 but bored of it all.

by Anonymousreply 41December 4, 2019 6:28 PM

R39/R41 plus the movie makes clear he has no trouble getting pussy.

[Quote] SMG did return to do a pilot for a TV series of this a few years ago.

The sequel with Amy Acker was originally supposed to be a tv show. And in the third movie one of the character's said that Kathryn ended up at a methadone clinic.

by Anonymousreply 45December 4, 2019 10:50 PM

R34, not a cameo, just a bit part. She wasn’t distinguished enough at the time for it to have been a cameo.

by Anonymousreply 46December 4, 2019 11:46 PM

No network would pick up the show

by Anonymousreply 47December 4, 2019 11:55 PM

Reese's films are mostly shit but this one is excellent

by Anonymousreply 48December 5, 2019 7:04 PM

R48 most of her early 90s/00s films are good before she started doing romcoms.

Does anyone know if there are any museum exhibits that display props from this movie? I’d love to go visit them. Any way to relive some of the memories from this movie would be sweet as candy.

by Anonymousreply 50December 6, 2019 1:08 AM

SMG is easily the best thing in this movie. Aside from Ryan's ass, that is

by Anonymousreply 51December 6, 2019 1:37 AM

They could probably sell the show today, but it would be easier to merge the themes into the new gossip girl that HBO is creating. Unfortunately, that’s how has the same boring show runner from The OC and The CWs PG-13 GG, that left out any real gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 52December 6, 2019 1:44 AM

[Quote] Unfortunately, that’s how has the same boring show runner from The OC and The CWs PG-13 GG, that left out any real gay characters.

I love The OC, but it is amazing how many storylines they repeated on that show.

by Anonymousreply 53December 6, 2019 4:26 AM

The sports car Reese was driving at the end was awesome.

by Anonymousreply 54December 8, 2019 12:58 PM

it's as bitter, sweet memory

by Anonymousreply 55December 8, 2019 2:41 PM

R54 and the song choice helped too.

by Anonymousreply 56December 8, 2019 3:49 PM

r53 don't get me started, The OC was the shit. But Joshua Schwartz refused The CWs offer to pick up the show. He really seemed to give it a Bryan Murphy slow death. Whoever thought it was a good idea to kill Marissa Cooper without a backup girl was stupid. It had so much potential with the introduction of the younger teenager, but they waited to like half way through the last season to start that process. That show helped my lonely ass get through High School in my podunk town. Seth was the perfect boyfriend.

Josh Schwartz removed every gay character arch on GG. Serina's brother just disappears somewhere in their family's 2 story penthouse.

Back to "Cruel Intentions", did any of you watch the deleted scenes on the DVD? They actually had an extended cut of the gay blackmail scene. After Sebastian extorts Greg for info he says something like, now why don't you take care of me or something and steps up to him, saying, "Go ahead. Touch it". The Dawson's Creek guy looks up suprised. Kid you not sounds like a porn scene. Greg leans in to give him head, then Sebastian says just kidding and Greg looks destroyed. It was hot, but problematic. The director cut it because he said it made Sebastian too cruel and wouldn't work for his redemption arc.

Sorry I cant find the clip online so here is the movie cut, 2:50 mark.

R57 I never liked Marissa so I had no problem with her being killed off. And I thought they did a decent job adding in Taylor Townsend. As much as I love Seth + Summer, Seth wasn't a great bf. And I think the only gay character was Luke's dad in season 1....?

by Anonymousreply 58December 9, 2019 2:51 AM

Count me in as another who liked Taylor. Mopey, brooding, whiny Marissa was exhausting.

Taylor was fun and loosened Ryan up.

by Anonymousreply 59December 9, 2019 6:02 AM

There aren’t that many gay men in the world r58

by Anonymousreply 60December 9, 2019 2:46 PM

[quote]I never understood who gave Annette, Sebastian's car?

Who cares? We needed that cool scene of driving off and she was wearing his sunglasses too.

by Anonymousreply 61December 9, 2019 3:10 PM

I LOVED this movies when it came out. Did you see the deleted scene where Kathryn says she doesn't fuck losers? Sebastian smacks her across the face and is about to rape her I think, but they decided against it. I'll see if I can find it. The Coke Crucifix was everything and I wanted one very badly just b/c I thought it was cool.

by Anonymousreply 62December 9, 2019 3:55 PM

Here it is...I think it's not as good as the theatrical release.

by Anonymousreply 64December 9, 2019 6:47 PM

Every single time I hear "Bittersweet Symphony" the instant memory comes back of the scene where SMG storms out of the funeral and sees that everyone knows what a bad person she is from Sebastian's copied journals and then she cries. And yes, I still enjoy that movie years later! Nostalgia.

Except Ryan Phillippe is the biggest Debbie Downer actor in every film from that era. I do NOT get his appeal. He sulked all the time for no reason and repeated this for I Know What You Did Last Summer (except he's more aggressively sulky in that one). Did straight women think this was hot? It was really annoying to me and made me question his acting range.

by Anonymousreply 65December 9, 2019 7:45 PM

I would call it brooding or sexy smoldering, myself.

by Anonymousreply 66December 10, 2019 11:12 AM

R62 they should have left the slapping part in.

by Anonymousreply 67December 10, 2019 12:58 PM

The slapping part feels overacted. Glad they cut it.

by Anonymousreply 68December 15, 2019 12:36 AM

"Iconic." Why do middlebrow dipshits have such a fascination with this word?

by Anonymousreply 69December 15, 2019 12:43 AM
