Eldergays had heroes like Harvey Milk who worked tirelessly to better things for gays. We have trash like Adam Rippon, Chris Crocker, Jeffree Star and James Charles, who are pathetic excuses for human beings, much less gay men. I guess the lezzies have Ellen Degeneres, but she’s rumored to be a huge cunt off-camera, and I don’t see her as a role model. I need a respectable gay male I can get behind and that can lead the gay movement.
I can’t think of any current gay man that a gayling could look up to. 🤔

Tim Cook?
On October 30, 2014, Cook came out as gay in an editorial for Bloomberg Business, "I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me."[67] He consulted with Anderson Cooper, who had publicly come out himself, on aspects of the statement, and cleared the timing to ensure it would not distract from business interests.[68] Cook had been open about his sexuality "for years" and, while many people at the company were aware of his sexual orientation, he sought to focus on Apple's products and customers rather than his personal life. He ended his op-ed, "We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick."[67] Cook became the first and only openly gay CEO on the Fortune 500 list.[68] In September 2015, Cook clarified on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, "Where I valued my privacy significantly, I felt that I was valuing it too far above what I could do for other people, so I wanted to tell everyone my truth."[69] In October 2019, he talked about the decision and remarked on how it was thanks to LGBTQ people who had fought for their rights before him that paved the way for his success; and that he needed to let younger generations know that—in a coding analogy—he saw being gay as a feature his life had to offer rather than any problem.[68] He hoped his openness could help LGBTQ youth dealing with homelessness, and suicide hope that their situation could get better.[68]

Johnny Weir. I don’t know about his personal life, but as an athlete, he is incredibly disciplined, and he was a pioneer in being an out athlete, while being held back and criticized by judges for being too effete and too flamboyant. A lot of professional men skaters are gay, but he had the guts to dress and perform as an out gay athlete, even knowing points were being taken off for doing it and it was holding him back.
While everyone else was in the closet for fear they would lose individual events and it would damage their careers, he was out and proud. He was a trailblazer for others that came after him.
This performance was described by one commenter as, “the gayest thing I have ever seen.”

R71 - exactly what do you think “sexless” means?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 3, 2019 2:00 PM |
This is a great question, because I'm really struggling to think of good answers. The majority of men who come to mind are the 40+ generation, there are not any younger guys that I consider to be true role models for young gays. The problem seems to be that the guys that are idolised in the gay community are the hot ones who are more known for the contents of their underwear than the content of their character.
I would say that someone like Mike Parrow (Wrestler) who is challenging stereotypes and showing the world that there are different 'types' (for want of a better word) of gay man is important. For a long time the only famous out gay men were singers or camp comedians, and I think a lot of straight people were only ever exposed to that. Sportsmen, businessmen, politicians who are gay and visible are demonstrating that gay men come in all shapes and sizes, and contribute to society in as many ways and at as many levels as straight men.

R83 No. Gay men are gay men. They encompass a spectrum, and that most certainly includes fey, effeminate gay men who have always been terrorized for their mannerisms and no longer should be. Gay men who look down on gay men for being gay need to get over it or jump off a cliff. It’s time for that to die.
And I do not consider people who lucked into good looks to be role models. Role models are people who have strong minds and strong hearts.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | December 3, 2019 3:28 PM |
R83, it’s not “small and weak” to do the courageous things they have done.
Pete volunteered to go to war. Then he came out in conservative Indiana, knowing he would run for re-election shortly after and could lose because of it.
Ronan took on the Hollywood powers that be. I’m sure he got death threats. And no one has ever dared to expose what those powerful men had been doing for years. No actor or actress even dared accuse them, for fear they would be blackballed. And many that refused advances of men like Harvey Weinstein lost their careers. But Farrow was able to convince those people to come out. That’s a huge accomplishment in itself.
Both men did things many before them didn’t have the guts to do. Small maybe, but weak? No. They both have brass balls.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 3, 2019 3:50 PM |
Pete is overrated. He stayed in the closet until gay people became more normalized and gay rights were getting passed. Also, even though it was Indiana, his city is NOT conservative. It's Democrat thanks to the people of color who reside there.

Role models don’t have to be celebrities. I’m a part of the LGBT network at work, and all sorts of people at every level are ‘champions’ - utterly hate the word, but I got a lot of support from a very senior member of the network at one point. It was good to be able to approach him and talk honestly about issues I was having.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 3, 2019 4:11 PM |
Actually, there are more LGBT "role models" now than ever before. Maybe too many.
From the smart, hard working and genuinely inspiring (and kind of hidden, at least to the mob general public)... to the dumb, loud and obnoxious (who tend to grab all the attention, often bad attention)... and literally everything in between.
Decades earlier, they were very few and far between.

Am I alone in thinking that DL's obsession with hating on Pete is over the top? What gives?
He stayed in the closet until gay people became more normalized
The man is in his 30s. When do you expect someone to come out, particularly in a conservative state where they've struggled to treat gay people like humans? When he was fighting in Afghanistan? When he was attending Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar? No, he waited until it could have actually cost him something — his job and political career — to come out, but that doesn't earn him an iota of respect, according to [italic]you[/italic].
and gay rights were getting passed.
Pray tell, what gay rights getting passed are you talking about? (Hint: marriage wasn't "passed", it was ordered by the Supreme Court.)
...his city is NOT conservative. It's Democrat thanks to the people of color...
Those would be the people who have gone around reminding everyone that no POC have endorsed Pete, and have bitterly complained that Pete fired the city's first African American police chief (for cause, but they always manage to leave that part out), failed to build bridges with the local black community, and had a poor response to the recent white officer shooting an unarmed black man. Yes, I know that these things are not directly correlated to AA community support, but you can't exactly claim that Pete has had it easy in South Bend because blacks vote Democratic.
Try harder. I know you can find hatred for Pete in your heart, you just need to look deeper.

Just because you were presumed gay in elementary school doesn’t mean all gay and bi men must or should be out so soon. Flaming and flamboyant men are out early because they are presumed gay from the start. Masculine gay guys can hide and have more to lose by coming out. Pete came out, but most masculine mainstream guys never do.

No, I'm not Pete, R109. I just can't believe that on a thread expressing that there are no gay male role models, all we've done is criticize candidate after candidate (for role model, not president), singling out Mayor Pete to highlight, as though all of the accomplishments to his credit don't really matter because... what, he's not a porn star? Or is it that he's just a garden variety homo not predisposed to pandering?

We have plenty, OP, you're just incredibly out of touch with Millennial and Gen Z gays. This is routinely a problem with Eldergays. The gay guys you listed aren't idols in the gay community, they're entertainment for straight women. Some of the gays I look up to include NPH, Matt Bomer, and Frank Ocean, all of which have done great things for gay men through their celebrity. Once again, it's not that there aren't anymore gay male idols and role models, it's just that the old bitches on here don't understand the newer generations of gays at all. It's why they critique us for being openly sexual all the time. 90% of the DL's userbase are bitter old gays stuck with a Reagan-era mindset.

There are numerous great role models out there. Ned Price, for example, was a CIA analyst and worked in the Obama Administration for the National Security Council as a special assistant to Obama. He teaches at Georgetown and is a national security commentator for MSNBC. He resigned publicly from the CIA in 2017 because of his distrust of Donald Trump.
Mark Morris has choreographed gorgeous dances for several decades now, and his company also founded a nationwide project of teaching dance to people with Parkinson's Disease to help them stave off disease progression.
Sean Maloney is a gay congressman, who married his partner in 2014, whom he has been with since 1992. They have adopted and raised 3 children. He was one of the best "interrogators" of the Intelligence Committee over the past month.
Michael Tilson Thomas - former conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and composer. Openly gay for decades, has been married since 2014 to his partner of 30 some years.
Numerous dancers, actors, musicians, authors, playwrights, singers, gymnasts, ice skaters, divers, swimmers. When I was young, I had to read between the lines to know that Tchaikowsky was gay. I had to sneak books out of the library to figure out that James Baldwin was gay. Living athletes, politicians, working public figures in the arts, out of the closet and living life openly gay? Forgetaboutit. If a gay character appeared in a film, he was killed off in the course of the movie.
OP sounds as though he expects or deserves a sexually hot genius, who's also a saint to be his gay role model. Good luck with that. The best role models are those who are just living their lives successfully without being or acting ashamed of being who they are.

There are other more significant role models than d-list actors, reality stars and models. In fact, I'm not certain they encourage realistic and positive goals for LGBT youth.
I do believe Mayor Pete is a role model. He's breaking stereotypes and boundaries.

R4 Gore Vidal did not believe in innate homosexuality and made a point that everyone must be bi or pan. He hated gay men, especially effeminate gay men and didn't want to be categorised as one. Not a role model for gays.
R13 Ricky Martin literally said he's open to having sex with women and doesn't believe in sexual labels. Not a role model for gays.
R67 Dan Savage has told gay men that they need to get over their aversion to vagina, promotes conversion therapy. Not a role model for gays.
R79, Gus Kentworthy lurks around DL posting FTM trans shit. Not a role model for gays.
R9 Adam Lambert, had a good time going down on a lady friend but still insists he's a goldstar gay, appears to be a goldstar idiot. Not a role for gays.

I'm glad others have called out OP's post as ridiculous.
Others have pointed out obvious examples in politics and the arts.
Not sure if they've been mentioned already but it's easy to reel off gay men doing important work in literature and the arts -- writers like Garth Greenwell, Ocean Vuong and Danez Smith, and musicians like Nico Muhly, Mike Hadreas and Rostam Batmanglij.

GayBoy22 is a personal role model of mine.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | December 5, 2019 1:58 PM |
I'm glad R156 debunked the theory that Dan Savage promoted conversion therapy (because that would, if true, be horrible) but there many, many other reasons to preclude Savage from role model leadership, beginning with his hypocrisy on sexual conduct to poor judgement in his personal life (since his personal life is his professional life). When I lost respect for Savage was when, years ago, he attended IML and professed to gay men about expressing their sexual preferences but then shunned people who were doing just that (and, of course, turns around a few years later and engages in the same behavior he was shunning).
Which begs the question, is ideological consistency required for role model status? Is this the reason that so many gay men and potential role models never get the credit they deserve, given that an integral part of gay life is coming to terms with your otherness? Of course I'm talking about coming out, which we rightly celebrate as a community, but as the comments on this thread show, if not done according to the standard of the moment, even this act of bravery and leadership gets misconstrued into an act of shame. And then the standards change (or as R114 puts it, being born with one hand in the glitter jar), and coming out (no matter how much) later in life turns into a detriment. It's no wonder we lack consensus on who among us leads.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 5, 2019 3:25 PM |
There is nothing admirable about Dan Savage.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | December 5, 2019 4:42 PM |
R156, No, he said this in his Savage Love "advice" column, try reading it sometime. He'd said that gay men need to be more "open-minded" to dating/fucking masculinized women and that their enlarged clit is no different to a penis and that gay men just need to use their "imagination". That is literally conversion therapy. And he's made similar remarks about lesbians. He's been saying disgusting homophobic shit like this for years now. He calls gay men who have boundaries assholes and he seems to have some weird issue with goldstar gays simply for being goldstar.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | December 5, 2019 5:09 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 170 | December 5, 2019 7:17 PM |
r167, yeah, a quick google search using key words dan savage gay men should be open minded dating women came up with nothing but a straight man dating a pre-op transwoman. (Dan Savage says, if you can't deal with a penis on a woman, don't feel bad - it's probably hard-wired in you). I'm thinking you're making this up, but I'll be happy to change my mind if you produce an actual link
Mind you, I respect Dan Savage for the most part, but I wouldn't put him up as a gay role model because he's made some questionable decisions over the past few years.. On the other hand, his "It gets better" campaign has undoubtedly saved hundreds of young gay lives. (Gay kids who were contemplating suicide and changed their minds). So he's a complex and self-contradictory figure, as the vast majority of us are.

From Wikipaedia;
On May 24, 2018, the New York Observer's Shane Snow reported that Brunton had "changed his story," describing his encounter with Takei as a "great party story" and confessing to "not remembering any touching" of his genitalia. Snow also consulted toxicologists, who opined Brunton likely had postural hypotension rather than a drugged drink, and a former Senior Deputy District Attorney, who opined "there’s nothing to prosecute" if it was the case that Takei stopped physical contact with Brunton after being denied consent.
From reading the rest of the article have to agree with R172, George Takei is genuinely pretty decent, good role model material

Chasten is just a normal gay man put into a spotlight and doing a great job managing the responsibility of being a first gay spouse in an American Presidential Primary. IDK, I think it's ok for a normal guy to be a role model. Maloney has 2024 written all over him, cause we all know how 2020 will end up.
P.S, 2024 will be the year for the young Dems to show out. Pete 2.0, Maloney (fingers crossed), Congressman (No, Senator) Kennedy, Senator Harris 2.0, (still in the closet) Booker 1.5, CA Gov Newsom, and maybe AOC depending on her profile over the next two terms. I predict that 2.5 gays will be running.
