Why didn't Pete take Chasten's last name?

Chasten explained this - because he has two brothers who will carry on the family name and Pete is an only child. He also took it so their children will have only one last name.

By the way, strategists advised Pete to change his last name to Montgomery (his middle name) because it would play better in a presidential campaign, but he was having none of that.

I feel like they try to be as close to a straight couple as possible. I’m not saying Chasten is feminine, but it seems like they promote him in a nurturing and supportive role to Pete. “I was fretting” “That man” “picking out china.” Taking Pete’s name.
