r7 makes a good point. When I was a kid during the era of broadcast TV, old movies (albeit chopped up for commercial breaks) made up a major portion of what was shown. I was more familiar with Humphrey Bogart and Bela Lugosi than the movie stars of my own time.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 30, 2019 9:54 PM |
R11, you dipshit. OP didn't say what movie that came out the year you were 12. He said which one that you watched when you were twelve. There would have been no point in writing "without stating your age" if it was about what movie came out when you were 12 since we can all do the math and figure out your age if you do that.

R3 - are you me? I would say the same thing. I knew I was "different" at 12 - but watching Cabaret made it clear to me - even though I'm not sure I understood the whole story of Cabaret. I got the album for my birthday (how could my parents NOT know I was a little gayling?) and then lip-synced all of Joel Grey's songs!

Oliver
Funny Girl
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
I have no idea why I loved Butch Cassidy as I was a gayling and always thought that though handsome Paul and Robert were not hot. I still don't think they were hot. Now Steve McQueen in The Reivers(are they allowed to show it or is it banned?) was hot.

You are right r7 however I do distinctly remember seeing Cooley HIgh. It came out when I was 14 and I walked to the theater with a friend and saw it. Very important film for a young teen. At the time I did not relate to any feelings I had for boys so I could relate to that world of the story of coming of age.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It made me dedicate my life to the vocation of teaching. Three years later I was by a priest as I was crossing a road to try to see The Exorcist--the movie didn't change my life (I didn't get to see it that day, needless to say), but it put me off priests. The following year I saw a rerelease of Women in Love and that made me gay.

I was 12 in 1972 so it's also Cabaret. It an experience that's burned into my memory. A rainy Sunday afternoon, my parents decided to see a movie, I didn't want to go and sulked in the cinema seat... then Joel Grey's distorted face appeared "Wilkommen" and I was hooked. And it wasn't just the musical numbers, I totally understood the bisexual menage a trois and selling the fur coat to pay for the abortion. I felt like a grown up.
