Cornish Hens -- Why So Expensive?

Other than a perfectly cooked Porterhouse it's one of my favorite proteins in a meal.

Why do they cost so fucking much? Has it always been this way?

by Anonymousreply 32May 23, 2020 2:41 AM

They are just small chickens, You can probably get them fairly cheaply in Aldi.

Guinea Fowl tastes much better. No fucking idea where you can buy it in the US though.

Are they really that expensive? I never paid attention to the prices of them, but I've seen them for sale at discount grocery stores like Save-A-Lot, in the frozen section.

The most underwhelming thread of 2019. It just had to roll in at the last minute.

by Anonymousreply 4November 28, 2019 11:16 AM

All they iz iz sick chickens!

by Anonymousreply 5November 28, 2019 11:23 AM

Because of the area where you're purchasing them.

by Anonymousreply 6November 28, 2019 12:18 PM

OP, they're usually very cheap. Where are you located?

by Anonymousreply 7November 28, 2019 1:06 PM

Why not try quail? Or ortolan?

by Anonymousreply 8November 28, 2019 3:55 PM

Try squab.

by Anonymousreply 9November 28, 2019 4:05 PM

I'm in Los Angeles.

I didn't try Costco, they are probably affordable there.

by Anonymousreply 10November 28, 2019 4:06 PM

Go for pigeon pie. It was eaten at Thanksgiving before the late 18th c.

by Anonymousreply 11November 28, 2019 4:33 PM

I meant late 1800s^

by Anonymousreply 12November 28, 2019 4:34 PM

The do have them at Aldi for cheap. When I was a kid mom use to buy them with “parts missing” which made them extra affordable. I’m not sure how the poor little birds had lost their parts.

by Anonymousreply 13November 28, 2019 4:59 PM

In my country I can't even find them. Consider yourself fucking lucky you can even get them OP.

by Anonymousreply 14November 28, 2019 5:02 PM

I don’t get why they’re so special; too much work for tinymeat.

by Anonymousreply 15November 28, 2019 5:11 PM

Love the flavor.

by Anonymousreply 16November 28, 2019 5:59 PM

[15] it’s not the size of the meat, it’s how you use it.

by Anonymousreply 17November 28, 2019 5:59 PM

R16, but are they dark meat or white meat?

by Anonymousreply 18November 30, 2019 8:14 AM

[quote]...it's one of my favorite proteins...

NEVER use this in a sentence that doesn't involve cocksucking.

by Anonymousreply 19November 30, 2019 8:29 AM

A pack of 2 is like $6 where I live. Hardly a bank breaker.

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2019 2:25 AM

Quit being "extra".....buy a god damned chicken, like a normal person.

by Anonymousreply 24December 1, 2019 2:30 AM

Cue the frau who is furiously typing away her recipe for crock pot cornish game hens...

by Anonymousreply 25December 1, 2019 2:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 30May 23, 2020 2:14 AM

Two words, OP:

Banzai chickens.

by Anonymousreply 31May 23, 2020 2:35 AM

What I don't understand is why they take longer to roast than a full size chicken! But I love that little teeny tiny wishbone.
