In a recent Vanity Fair article, the author visits Phoenix in his Hollywood Hills home and finds him cooking sweet potatoes for his two dogs because they are on a vegan diet. Don't dogs and cats have to have some meat in their diet? Is he just another Hollywood flake? If he owned a zoo, would he put the lions on a vegan diet and would they die of malnutrition?
Joaquin Phoenix Feeds His Dogs A Vegan Diet
by Anonymous | reply 82 | November 29, 2019 4:08 PM |
I would think you would have to give them nutritional supplements, that fruits and vegetables are not enough.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 27, 2019 9:37 PM |
Flake!

He can play Free Waterfall, Jr. if they ever make a live-action [italic]Futurama[/italic] movie.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 27, 2019 9:39 PM |
If that's true he's an idiot. Dogs can survive on a vegan diet (contrary to cats), but obviously it's not their natural nutrition. No wolf would choose a vegan diet over a carnivore diet. If you're vegan and want pets, sure, just don't get dogs. Or cats.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 27, 2019 9:40 PM |
Dogs are carnivores. They eat meat.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 27, 2019 9:41 PM |
They did not evolve to have teeth just so they could eat dried up chunks of brown powder.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 27, 2019 9:42 PM |
Not only are fruits and vegetables not enough, but a pure vegetable diet can have disastrous consequences. I read somewhere that sweet potatoes were good for dogs, so I cooked a large one for my two Siberian Huskies to share.. It was a literal shitbomb. It kicked in a couple of hours after they ingested it, and they had projectile diarrhea all over the yard. A LOT of it. It was totally disgusting. I had to completely hose down the whole yard, watching a sea of dog diarrhea overflow the curb and run into the gutter toward the storm drain.
Joaquin Phoenix should be horsewhipped for doing that to his dogs.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 27, 2019 9:42 PM |
Thanks for the vivid picture R8 lol. But true.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 27, 2019 9:43 PM |
Flake. Dogs (and cats) have evolved to eat meat. I’d argue it is almost neglectful to treat them otherwise.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 27, 2019 9:49 PM |
Pumpkin brings the same result, R8. And the smell would curl concrete.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 27, 2019 9:50 PM |
haha, yeah, you have to introduce things like sweet potatoes (anything high fiber or protein) slowly in small amounts.
while dogs can be on a vegan diet and remain healthy it is difficult to get the proper amount of fats and protein they need. much like babies. his dogs do seem well cared for though. I would be suspicious of anyone doing vegan for their dogs however.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 27, 2019 9:50 PM |
Is the author of this article a vegetarian flake?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 27, 2019 9:51 PM |
It is abuse, unless the dog has some unlikely medical condition that requires a vegan diet.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 27, 2019 9:53 PM |
Such as, R14?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 27, 2019 9:59 PM |
All cats are Obligate Carnivores while Dogs are Facultative Carnivores. Which means that cats need meat and not vegetables which are mostly useless to them. Dogs also need meat but can for a very short period subsist on vegetables but not as a long term diet.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 27, 2019 10:03 PM |
Veterinary experts say it is possible for dogs to survive on a vegan diet, but it's not easy and must be done with the guidance of a veterinary professional experienced in canine dietary requirements.
So hopefully Joaquin has an experienced person involved.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 27, 2019 10:04 PM |
You also have to make sure the dogs aren't supplementing their diet while you aren't watching, unless you keep them indoors 24/hours. And if you let your cats out you can bet they are shopping on their own.

I have to laugh at this thread. Most dogs living off pet food are not eating meat, they're eating a mix of 99% soy and proteins and sometimes as low as 1% leftover carcass of poultry or cattle, that is mostly bones. They're already mostly vegetarian and they're not dying, are they?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 27, 2019 10:08 PM |
Canned/bagged food is formulated to supply pets with vitamins and minerals they need to be healthy.

Still not meat. I couldn't care less about giving vegan diets or not to dogs, but this pearl clutching assuming dogs will die if they don't eat meat is false, as attested by the formula on pet food.

R22 You’re right! Most pet food is junk and has a negligible amount of protein in it. However there is at least some. Ideally you want to give your animals and nice balance. However, feeding your cat or dog no meat at all is abuse.

No dogs are reported to have died eating it.

There's still a difference between not dying and having the most fitting, natural nutrition. People can also survive on space food, but nobody would recommend or enjoy eating like that unless you have to.

R40 Commercial vegan dog food is massively fortified with minerals, vitamins and hydrogenated vegetable fat. It's a good replacement for a meat based diet and probably healthier than the diet that most vegan people eat.
Biggest bonus is less stomach disturbances for your dog.
I'm not a vegan by any stretch BTW, but I've seen dogs with big health issues improve greatly on a Vegetarian/Vegan diet.

I once worked with a guy whose wife decided to become a vegetarian. Even worse, she dragged the whole family into it. The only one safe was the dog, who continued getting canned dog food. The idiot mom couldn't understand why her 2-year-old started eating out of the dog's dish. I don't think anyone should be veggan or vegetarian.

r42 A hiking FaceBook group I belong to had a woman who made her family go paleo. Fine for the teens and adults, not so much for the energetic six year old twins who were starving because they didn’t get enough calories.
She was pissed because they children wolfed down the chicken salad and cucumber water she packed for their lunch during morning tea, and their teacher noticing they were starving would buy them juice and a banana and a sandwich, all verboten, and sent home a concerned letter.
She would also get embarrassed because when she went shopping in the local village the children would pull out half eaten doughnuts and fries from the bins.
She asked for advice about how to make them stick to their meal plans and thankfully got no sympathy.

Y’all don’t know shit. I’ve been a vegetarian all my life. I was raised that way. My dog is 15 years old and I’ve never fed him meat. He’s also a vegetarian...not by choice...but, he never goes hungry. I buy a vegetarian kibble but he eats LOTS of people food.Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores. They are opportunistic eaters. At 15, my dog is still healthy and vibrant, though he is slowing down because he’s an older guy now. Most ‘dog food’ is poison. You think they put good meat in there? No. A dog can be healthy on a vegetarian diet. Our dog loves just about anything we are eating and usually gets our leftovers or a small portion just for him. Another thing; he’s never had diarrhea or loose stools the entire time. I attribute this to his diet. He’s not eating poison.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 28, 2019 3:19 AM |
This why people hate vegans.
They are never okay with it just being their personal choice, they want to force other people and even fuckin animals into their own warped view.

I feed my dogs steaks from QVC once or twice a week. Because life is short, and even shorter for dogs. If those steaks are good enough for David Venable, then they're good enough for my pups! They eat chicken, salmon, and hamburger the rest of the week. And a little Iams lamb dog food at night. My boy dog is a rescue who was put in the pound twice and on death row. My girl is my deceased Mother's dog. My Mom only fed her people food for 11 years. I've had her almost two years now. They are happy dogs!

I checked a few brands I could think of off the top of my head and they were all higher in meat byproducts than 10%. But would love to see your "reality." So post a link.

R46
If you’re open-minded, you should watch the documentary Pet Fooled and then do further research as to why dogs need to eat meat.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 28, 2019 6:53 AM |
In evolutionary terms, canis lupus familiaris (dogs) are basically just resized wolves and biologically categorized as a subspecies of the wolf. 25,000 years or more of canine domestication is absolutely nothing in comparison to the millions of years of development they've gone through as a species.
Scientifically, the species Canis lupus familiaris (dogs) are in the Order of the Carnivora. Carnivora is Latin for "flesh devourer" as unpleasant as that might sound. Its physical attributes include sharp teeth and powerful claws which have adapted to facilitate the catching and eating of other animals.
Dogs are in the suborder of Caniformia and will supplement their diet with occasional ripe fruit and berries unlike their distant cousins, the Feliformia (cats) who rely on a totally meat based diet.
Dogs' health us put at risk on a strict vegetarian diet which is not natural for them unlike humans who do well on a plant based diet. Cats cannot survive on a vegetarian diet - period. To alter their diet based on your socio-political, humanitarian, ethical, or environmental philosophy is inhumane and your pet should be handed over to the local pet welfare agency for a health evaluation and re-adopted to a more knowledgeable and accommodating family.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 28, 2019 7:25 AM |
This is a stupid thread with a lot of stupid replies from armchair dietitians with broken google fingers. Yes, dogs can be vegan. Cats cannot. There are a number of places that now sell balanced vegan dog food but it’s expensive. But your dog will live longer and have less health problems. Fact.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 28, 2019 8:08 AM |
Saying dogs live longer and healthier if they don't eat meat is like saying cows live longer and healthier if they don't eat grass. You don't need google for finding the flaw in that logic.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 28, 2019 8:11 AM |
For R8, the famous “I has a sweet potato” story. I swear, this went “viral” before anyone used the phrase in conjunction with the internet.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 28, 2019 8:17 AM |
R49, do you understand what the word omnivore and carnivore means? You seem not to. If dogs were carnivores they would only eat meat. This is demonstrably not true, they will eat anything - hence they are omnivores. Your hatred of veganism seems to have diminished your mental capacity somewhat.
That said I don't agree with putting dogs on vegetarian/vegan diets unless there is a medical reason for doing so. Humans have the choice to control their diet according to their beliefs but pets do not. I feel guilty enough that I can't give my dog certain types of meat due to allergies so I don't want to restrict him even further.
Oh and sweet potatoes are good for dogs but I'd recommend the dried kind, like sweet potato jerky, over fresh.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 28, 2019 9:07 AM |
R55 I'm not here to argue against vegetarianism which I hold in great esteem. I'm here to argue that a vegetarian diet for a dog is not the most healthful natural diet.
If you're a committed vegetarian and an animal lover, an excellent option to consider, believe it or not, is the domestic or fancy rat (Rattus norvegicus domestica). They have an incredibly adaptive diet which allows them to flourish with a proper nutritionally balanced vegan diet. Pot bellied pigs likewise can readily subsist on a vegetarian diet and live for15 years or more. The ferret, like the cat, will not survive on a vegetarian diet so is not an appropriate pet for vegans who avoid meat for their animal companions.
We have to manage our personal philosophies in a way that doesn't harm innocents. Vegans should not impose their lifestyle habits on innocent pets who are ill adapted to a strictly vegetarian diet. Just like vegetarians avoid meat and fur coats, they should also avoid dog and cat ownership if a natural pet diet that includes meat offends their sensitivities. Again, I think highly of vegetarianism and its philosophy and motivations but we can't cause further harm to our domestic fur buddies. 😻🐭🐶🐰

by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 28, 2019 1:34 PM |
R62 There is no evidence to support that and in fact evolutionary theory, or Darwinism, completely destroys this concept that the canis lupus familiaris could ever be a natural vegetarian. This debunked theory that any Mammalian from the order Carnivora can healthily survive on a vegetarian diet is a theory only for those who eschew science. Think climate change deniers.

I was giving her baked potatos and sometimes sweat potatoes along with other people food and she never had diahr..........
I know there is alot of anti vegan sentiment on datalounge but I would suggest you sometime watch the dvd/movie entitled........... knives over forks. The FDA has brainwashed our population into how much protein is really necessary and what a supposed balanced diet is....................additionally how and also what animals have to go thru to end up on your plate is pretty awful. Think about it.

She feeds her dogs on Vitalin mixed with a little freshly cooked chicken or fish, it's not a vegan diet but consists of less than 20% meat including the amount in the Vitalin.
She has very healthy happy dogs.

I was taught in Biology class that dogs were wolves that evolved to become pets of humans. Dogs are not wolves anymore.
Dogs watch human eyes for queues of what to do for instance. Ever see a cat pay attention to your every move? Wolves do not pay attention either.
Dogs evolved to eat what humans eat. Humans are omnivores. Dogs are omnivores. Both need meat now and then. Omnivores should eat plants too. Both are required for a healthy diet. Sorry, vegans, you are nutz.
