Maine Coons

Do any DLers own one? Apparently they're quite gentle and sociable in comparison to other cats. Would you recommend them?

They're magnificent cats. They're also too smart and hold grudges.

by Anonymousreply 1November 25, 2019 9:11 PM

they are awesome!

by Anonymousreply 2November 25, 2019 9:11 PM

they're the racists of the cat world

worse than kitlers

by Anonymousreply 3November 25, 2019 9:14 PM

My cat is part Maine Coon but not purebred. He is the most social cat I've ever met, and very "talkative". If someone knocks on the door, many cats will run and hide or at least go to the sidelines and be cautious. This guy rushes to the door to see who's there and serves as the welcome committee every time.

by Anonymousreply 4November 25, 2019 9:14 PM

Some of the best kitties out there but they are huge and make giant poops....as long as you dont mind cleaning the litter box, go for one

by Anonymousreply 5November 25, 2019 9:18 PM

Maine Coon sounds like a euphemism for lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 6November 25, 2019 9:19 PM

if you ever wanted a dignified dog but not actually a dog, a maine coon is the dog for you.

by Anonymousreply 7November 25, 2019 9:21 PM

That poor cat looks as bored by his redneck owner, as I am.

He has nothing on Cinder Block.

You can't compare any other cat to Cinderblock, R8. That's setting an impossibly high standard. Cinderblock rules us all.

by Anonymousreply 9November 25, 2019 10:30 PM

They are gorgeous and I'd love to have one someday. I've heard they're very sweet. If I remember right they have a slightly higher risk of getting some specific conditions, like heart and hip problems, so you should watch out for that.

by Anonymousreply 10November 25, 2019 10:41 PM

Yes but be aware they can be dog like in neediness. But they do listen and will do what you tell them.

by Anonymousreply 11November 25, 2019 11:01 PM

Cat hair on everything.

by Anonymousreply 12November 25, 2019 11:26 PM

They like to climb. Your drapes will be abused and your furniture will be full of cat hair but they are great pets. Very sociable.

by Anonymousreply 13November 25, 2019 11:31 PM

We have one who is part Maine Coon. R12 He doesn't really shed that much if you brush him regularly. And like R11 said, he acts like a dog. Always wants to be in your lap, always wants to be the center of attention, and can be super loud.

We adopted him and his brother. They were litter mates but look nothing alike. The one who is part Maine Coon is social, black and poofy, while the other guy is a flamepoint short hair who hates people. The shelter told us that "their mom must have gotten around" and it's not uncommon for cats with different fathers to come from the same litter.

We cat-sit for my neighbor’s Maine Coons when she goes away. They are ancient; she’s had them since we moved in 15 years ago. There’s one who’s an absolute love, very smart and funny. The other one is a grumpy bitch who hisses if you get near her.

by Anonymousreply 15November 25, 2019 11:40 PM

my friend has one who if you toss or roll golf ball sized, crumpled balls of aluminum foil will fetch repeatedly. he also does this chirpy singing thing.

by Anonymousreply 16November 25, 2019 11:49 PM

Fur absolutely everywhere and very demanding (insists on being the center of attention at all times) but the most loving companion you can imagine. Very talkative. Have something you can wear for "lap time" because there will be lots of it and there will be fur all over you and little snags from all the kneading. Mine follows me around endlessly and likes to be involved in absolutely everything that's going on in the house.

by Anonymousreply 17November 26, 2019 5:19 AM

Scottish folds, straight ear variety, are medium sized, cute and very personable. Mine are more like lap puppies, but they purr. Mine play fetch, sit up, give there paw, and are very playful.

Maru, the famous Instagram cat, is a straight ear Scottish Fold.

They sound fun to cat-sit. I don't know if I could handle living with one full time.

by Anonymousreply 19November 26, 2019 6:29 AM

Very dog-like. Followed me and did what I told him. Finally asked the vet if something was wrong with him as I wanted a cat not a dog. That's when I discovered they have dog-like qualities. Came in handy when one morning I found him on the roof not able to get down. I instructed him how and he was back safe on the ground.

by Anonymousreply 20May 17, 2021 6:23 PM

Ditto on them being very dog like. I switched to adopting cats after all my dogs eventually passed away. It just felt wrong to replace my dogs with other dogs. My first main coon, I adopted very late in his life and he passed away a couple years ago, but he was always super chill. Currently I have an orange main coon. He's a total attention whore and will walk side by side with me around the yard, like a dog.

by Anonymousreply 21May 17, 2021 10:01 PM

The cat in OP's video is a beauty.

by Anonymousreply 22May 18, 2021 12:58 AM

I have Bengals, which are also very dog-like, and love the size of Maine Coons, but am not prepared for all the cat hair. Apparently you have to brush them every day, or matting will occur. Also their bloomers need to be trimmed down.

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2021 1:04 AM

My last cat was part Maine Coon. She was a total sweetheart in every way.

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2021 1:08 AM

I had one. There's a lot of hair, but they're a great combination of smart, cat-ness, and affection for their owner.

by Anonymousreply 25May 18, 2021 1:11 AM

My cousin's Maine Coon Cat killed her chihuahua.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2021 1:33 AM

I adopted one who had been abandoned. He was a sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2021 1:35 AM

My plan when my big guy's time is up is to adopt a (n at least mixed) maine coon adult and then get a young dog so that the maine is boss. I really REALLY miss having cats but also can't live without a dog again.

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2021 1:42 AM

Yeah, from what I've seen and heard they're basically like having a 20 lb. lapdog that can climb and be litter trained.

by Anonymousreply 29May 18, 2021 6:36 AM

Maine Coons are so much better than small-ish lapdogs... thosel lapdogs are basically just cute automatons who eat, pee, and shit. Maine Coons have souls.

by Anonymousreply 30May 19, 2021 1:08 AM

Oh, we're talking about cats.

by Anonymousreply 31May 19, 2021 1:42 AM

We had a Maine Coon mix who we adopted as a senior. He was huge (21 lbs) and almost looked like a wildcat at times. He was a very sweet guy though and I miss him as he passed away about a year ago of extreme old age.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2021 3:58 AM

My sister and her family have three cats, and two of them are sweet as pie, but the Maine coon cat is the one unpleasant one.

by Anonymousreply 33May 19, 2021 4:24 AM

I had a Maine Coon for 2+ years and LOVED her. She loved playing in water (we had a drippy faucet and she would also jump into the shower/tub after we finished showering). She was very vocal and loved attention. Unfortunately, we had to re-home her because we had to move during a recession where we didn't have housing that would accept cats. I miss having cats and once I move again, would get a Maine Coon again. They are better than an average cat, in my opinion (although I've loved all the cats I've had during my lifetime).

by Anonymousreply 34May 19, 2021 6:59 AM

I agree about the Scottish folds/ straight ear variety. Mine are love bugs, play fetch, walk on a leash and love belly rubs. Very sweet and relaxed. They also adapted well to traveling with me.

And hairballs. Big, fuckin' hairballs.

by Anonymousreply 40May 19, 2021 8:59 AM

I think of them as Wookies of catworld.

by Anonymousreply 41May 19, 2021 9:33 AM

My neighbor had one that I used to take care of while she traveled for work. That cat was the evilest bitch I’ve ever met. I’d come into the house and shed hiss and arch her back like that huge cunt was gonna fuck with me.

I’d feed her. She’d hiss at me. I’d try to pet her, she’d try to bite me. She was a real bitch.

When she was ill and dying my neighbor asked me to go to the emergency vet with her because it was time and she needed my support. Of course, I went.

While the cat was on the table and we were saying goodbye, I bawled my eyes out like a damn fool. I had to go outside til the kitty owner came out to comfort *me* and tell me it was ok and it was all over. I cried all the way home. I suck at that shit. Lol! 😢

Barbara Walters: Bawack Obama, if you were a cat, what cat would you be?

B.O.: Well, Barbara, I think I would be a tabby.

B.W.: No, Bawack Obama, you would be the Maine Coon.

by Anonymousreply 43May 19, 2021 11:02 PM

I thought that was another self-centered and exhausting Demi Lovato video (?).

Fatal asthma attacks brought on by the shed fur?

by Anonymousreply 45May 25, 2021 2:12 AM

I have a friend who has a Maine Coon called Mr. Butters. He is the nicest cat in the entire world. Maine Coon's are like the golden retrievers of cats, friendly and sweet.

by Anonymousreply 46May 25, 2021 2:14 AM

Growing up our family had a maine coon and that cat was the most patient, gentlest thing. If there is a kitty heaven she is in it.

by Anonymousreply 47May 25, 2021 2:17 AM

The cat in the video is not a Maine Coon.

by Anonymousreply 48May 25, 2021 2:25 AM

I wish - I had a half Maine Coon and she definitely wasn’t what everyone’s describing here. If I got too too affectionate with her she would bite or kind of slap me. She was basically a sweet cat and absolutely adorable but followed me around and needing and giving affection like a dog most definitely not.

But my dream has always been to get a cat that acts like a dog so any suggestions are more than welcome.

by Anonymousreply 49May 25, 2021 2:38 AM

r49, the other half was velociraptor.
