OP
I detest subway tiles. Why do so many of the HGTV designers pick that for the kitchen?
I prefer glass mosaic tile or the hand painted concrete tile.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 25, 2019 9:39 AM |
Subway tiles are cheap. They're the new square tiles - covering a multitude of sins cheaply.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 25, 2019 10:28 AM |
I have white subway tiles in my bathroom, which was just remodeled back in 2014. I absolutely love them, and can't imagine anything else that could take their place. I have a home that was built back in the 1920's, which is quite small, and they're perfect for the bathroom. I don't get the hate.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 25, 2019 10:32 AM |
R2 no thanks to glass mosaic or painted cement tiles - not only are the all over HGTV as well but you can get them at any Home Depot in any suburb. Absolutely ubiquitous and low-brow.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 25, 2019 11:27 AM |
I like white subway tile too. I know it's trendy now, but I think it has, and will continue to age well. It's such a simple design and I like that.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 25, 2019 11:31 AM |
Subway tiles are pretty classic now. These awful things, in every condo and new build in shades of beige and gray now scream I am the next avocado appliances and you will always know exactly when I was installed. Plus, mind the dust.

God, I hate shiplap. It is so country.
I am really into the trend of detailed formal molding, wainscoting and all that jazz in bathrooms and bedrooms. I have no DIY ability so i can't do that for my own house, but I think it looks fab.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 26, 2019 1:54 PM |
I think subway tiles and the whole reclaimed wood look has already aged out of its stylish moment in the sun.
So has "white everything everywhere in the kitchen." Light and bright is OK but for fucks' sake, bring SOME level of contrast into play.

I love patterned ceramic tile as the flooring in bathrooms
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 27, 2019 1:22 PM |
In L.A. we’re starting to use hunter green mosaic tile, and sometimes bathrooms are pink and peach. Walls are still white, but more and more wood is light white oak or ash. Subway tiles are out of style, for the most part, but if used, they are installed vertically and/or stacked.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 27, 2019 1:51 PM |
White oak is all the rage but I like warmer wood tones

Jerusalem gold is for menopausal women. Gross!
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 28, 2019 4:22 AM |
My bathrooms are from 1928 and still have the original tile work on the walls (one is green w/ black border, the other is gold with black border), mosaic tile floors, toilets, cast iron tub (re-enameled), and pedestal sinks. I don't ever plan to remove any of it, just maintain. At a certain point, it become part of the history of the building and removing hurts the value.

This is probably not worthy of a full-on post but I figured I might ask you guys your thoughts about your personal taste here. I'm preparing to move into a smallish Victorian house, and I have come to realize that my tastes haven't really changed since I first moved out on my own, about 25 years. While I can be influenced by certain trends---I like a lot of the same paint choices and furniture I've had forever. I'll be painting the living room a deep terra cotta, the master bedroom a deep green, some antiques, some modern pieces. A lot of brown and black as well. I like to live with what I like, obviously, but the only thing that's changed really has been to make things slightly more modern. I'm thrilled that in this house the kitchen and bath haven't been updated in likely 80 years, so I am going to keep them pretty old school.

Hi everyone -
This is a thread to discuss HGTV shows, and a lot of folks are having a separate discussion about home decor here unrelated to HGTV, so I have created a thread for you to discuss those topic(s) to your heart's content. No need to thank me, just use that thread instead!
Smooches, The OP of this thread, who wants it to remain focused on HGTV stuff.

I watched a Good Bones marathon yesterday of their previous seasons (I only discovered the show this season because folks here were talking about it)
Anyway I was surprised to learn Thad is Mina's half brother by her dad. He said yesterday that his biological mom died when he was 11 and his father cut him out of his life. Karen became his pseudo mom.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 2, 2019 11:37 AM |
R58 I knew Thad was a half brother, but why did their dad cut him off? They redid the house of the dad and his wife in an episode and everyone got along well (although now I’m trying to think back if Thad was in that episode).
I love Mina but her squeaky voice gets on my nerves at times.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 2, 2019 1:28 PM |
The real question is: Will the House Hunters franchise get a new narrator? In current episodes the narrator voiced over almost all episodes, but only one or two lines. I suppose that was all she could manage. But now I wonder if future seasons will have a new narrator or none.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 4, 2019 11:34 AM |
I still kinda like the black counter tops. They are usually granite and look very 2000s, but I always thought food and dishes look really good on black.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 4, 2019 12:03 PM |
So what’s the current trend in countertops? We’re going to redo our kitchen after the new year
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 4, 2019 12:40 PM |
R64: Black granite is not inherently bad, nor white marble, nor white painted cabinetry, nor stainless steel appliances. The problem is a specific combination that adheres too closely to a too popular trend. Follow what everyone else is doing too closely and it will look like you had the Property Brothers as designer-contractors or bought a kitchen vignette from a big box home store.
Stick to natural materials and keep design details classic or simple and avoid faddish gimmicks and colors and finishes and, FFS, "accents" and you can have a nice design that will stand a test of years. Quality of materials and simplicity of design wears much better than flash in a kitchen, and wears longer.
Now those idiotic backsplashes of tiny colorful glass tiles, sparkling "quartz" countertops, and "Live Laugh Love" signs, those are inherently bad.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 4, 2019 12:43 PM |
What’s going to happen to all that granite once homeowners start ripping it out to replace with something new? I hope it doesn’t end up in landfills.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 4, 2019 12:52 PM |
Of course it ends up in landfills, R67. It's not an easy thing to dispose of: the local Habitat for Humanity likely has a surplus, and one person's old granite countertops are not so easily chopped up and reused as someone else's new kitchen countertops. Or there's the torture of communicating with Craigslist crazies (What color is it? Do you think it would look good with white cabinets and my blue periwinkle Royal Doulton? Do you have a bathroom and a phone charger in your house for me to use when I come over and look at the countertops? I know it says that you won't deliver it but would you consider delivering it? You said it was free but would you pay me to remove it?)
[quote]What to do with old granite counter top? [quote]mikeb33September 15, 2013 [quote]I put granite in my kitchen about 5 years ago. Now I am planning a full remodel and hate to think of just throwing it in the dumpster. Do you think anybody would take it for free? There is a number of fairly large pieces as well as an undermount SS sink. Maybe Craigslist?
Maybe stop doing full kitchen remodels more often than I replace a good pair of shoes?

Tad is Mina's half brother and Mina has a half sister via her dad as well, I think.
I wonder why the father and Tad didn't/don't speak. I still wonder if Tad likes guys. Maybe it's wishful thinking.

I'm with you, r70. That would be my ultimate goal too. But I need to compromise. My husband is the cook in our house, so the kitchen setup needs to match his needs. Basically, we're on the same page. We just bicker over details, for example where small appliances are stored best etc.

Last night HGTV had a special called House Party and it profiled all the upcoming shows (many of them new) that will be premiering over the next several months. I'm looking forward to them all.
They also went to the homes of current hosts for brief glimpses into their actual homes. I found it odd that they showed everyone's homes except Bromstad's. I guess his sling would be a turn off.

Marble can be a viable option if you regularly treat it. For me that's too much trouble especially when you can get quartz that looks exactly like marble.
The best kitchen HGTV ever did was done by Candace Olson. The homeowner was a gay guy who was a professional chef. His kitchen was gigantic. He specifically asked for 1 of his counter tops to be marble for the kneading & what not. The kitchen was so huge he had plenty of other counters for doing all the other cooking.
His kitchen had to easily cost $150,000. He also had a pet African Gray Parrot. He had a HUGE aviary cage in his breakfast nook. It was like 6ft tall and 4 ft wiide.
Candace gave him the most gorgeous kitchen.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | January 9, 2020 4:40 AM |
Yeah, but who wants to constantly treat the surface.
I have heard of having a piece of marble when you knead dough or make pie crusts and stuff because it keeps really cold but for the rest it would be too much upkeep.
Oh well, if you can afford it, more power to you. 🤷🏻♀️
by Anonymous | reply 118 | January 9, 2020 7:13 AM |
Iv seen beautiful marble on a center island. I guess yes, if you are more middle class and cook a lot it's not practical. But when you are talking about million dollar homes, or condos, more often than not, those people eat out 90% of the time. They dust those high-end kitchens more than they need cleaning.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 9, 2020 7:22 AM |
Marble doesn't have to be hermetically sealed every fifteen minutes or even every fifteen years.
Americans are obsessed with stone having a smooth as glass shiny new appearance when they don't have to be. Marble holds up very well without obsessive treatments; all is takes is the reasonable care that any vaguely clean person would do: wipe and clean surfaces that come in contact with food and avoid chopping and cutting.
Ancient Mediterranean houses have ancient sinks and work surfaces (long, vast expanses of countertop is a 20thC and later thing) of marble that show their age but hold up fine and function perfectly. (Photo is a pantry of 1890s)

I was recently in England and noticed the butcher block countertop is making a comeback. Thoughts?

Butcher block counters have always been a classic, didn't realize they had ever gone away.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | January 9, 2020 12:57 PM |
Why not, R122? There's a long tradition of butcher block and solid wood countertops in kitchens. Each material has its own qualities and maintenance requirements, but that's easy enough to figure out and decide if it's right for you.

So more lawsuits against Ashley Victoria. Why is she still getting shows on HGTV? This is multiple lawsuits against her company for fraud, shoddy work, etc..
On the other hand, we had the hot Italian cousins who were dropped by HGTV after one single lawsuit (no fraud). I really liked their show & them. Victoria comes off as a raging sanctimonious cunt. The cousins were so likable.
Anyone remember their names or their show's name? I'm blanking. I wonder what they're up to now? I wish they were back on TV.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | January 10, 2020 9:35 AM |
Butcher block is even harder to take care of. You cant really cut on it like a chopping board which sort of spoils the whole concept. It stains and burns easily. Sure you can sand out shallow scratch marks, but deep burns and stains just penetrate like a sponge.

I went to middle school in a old mansion that had been converted into a school in the mid 1950's. The main entryway and cafeteria (which was actually a covered over indoor pool) were tiled in marble in a subway tile pattern. The marble, with millions of steps from schoolboys, was obviously well worn but had developed a sort of patina of dirt in the edges and a honed satin appearance that always fascinated me as something that sort of had history and life to it. Now as an adult, I find that most people I know keep their marble floors shined to a mirror.
My house is terrazzo, which has not been buffed in decades and has a sort of a honed appearance to it that I love. I'm in the process of redoing my MCM kitchen and bathrooms, and while I am debating subway tile in the master (laid in row form, not the staggered pattern), I will use a glass tile for the kitchen backsplash. I would love marble countertops but definitely would not use a high gloss finish on them.

I think simple white, or neutral low-key colored subway tiles will be more timeless than many here suggest. I think it's like hexagonal small tiles for the floor... it always looks "old style" but never in an unattractive or dated way. "Classic" and "dated" can be the same thing, depending on the perceiver. Said because last year we remodeled a kitchen with white subway tiles (with a cobalt accent stripe).
We are beginning to remodel a kitchen this small craftsman cottage. The current kitchen is mid-century and ugly. Planning on Catalina or Malibu repro ceramic tiles for the backsplash etc. And a wooden counters. Tell me again why wooden counters are a bad idea? The current marble, quartz or even soapstone counters don't seem "craftsman"

There also a cutey who's been on a few Cambodia episodes trying to get people luxury apartments for $300 a month. by Anonymous | reply 182 | February 13, 2020 10:17 PM |
R182 I just watched it. It was a little weird. But you could see that it was legit. The main M/F couple were married and apparently the wife was always bi, and later on they met the third (a little Filipino looking bitch) and decided to make a throuple.
The guy's kinda handsome in a straight porn actor sort of way. The women are average looking.
Other than that, it was 3 ugly suburban houses.
The weird thing is that they were from Texas and wanted to live someplace fresh and new, and of all the places they could have picked in the entire US, they picked.....Colorado Springs, CO - which is one of the most deeply evangelical areas of the country. It's like saying "I want to move to a city with tremendous job growth!!!" and then moving to....Gary, Indiana.

by Anonymous | reply 184 | February 14, 2020 4:19 AM |
Yeah, I feel bad for feeling it, but it did seem icky to me.
And though I usually could care less about crotch droppings.....my thought was, to have a throuple if you are all kid free and adults is one thing, but to involve two young children in that is quite another.
I know....MARY!

Colorado Springs has been an ultra-conservative Christian stronghold for years but for some reason there's been a huge influx of people wanting to live there recently. A friend of mine moved there from Dallas and housing costs seem pretty similar between the two.

Home Town doesn't normally air on Sunday's but they had a special episode tonight as a lead in to Extreme Home Makepver and 100 Days
The home nuyer on Home Town was a world traveler. He's lived all over the world & spent the last 10 years in Belize. He vicited Laurel and fell in love with it so he decided to buy a home there.
He gave Ben & Erin an unlimited budget. Sky's the limit.. That threw them because they're so used to being rather frugal

This is sort of unrelated since it’s a TLC show, but I wonder if the Trading Spaces reboot was canceled? I haven’t heard anything about even filming for a third season and we’re coming up on the time that the seasons usually start airing. Sara is nothing like Joanna Gaines at all; she's actually very talented. And, her best buddy and partner in business is the slightly flaming Tommy Smythe.

I adore Sarah Richardson ! Rarely has she done a room I dont completely love . And her sidekick Tommy is a cutie pie .

Sarah pronounces "house" in a way I've never heard before.
I've heard many other Canadian pronunciations of words, but I have never heard the way she pronounces that word (almost like 'hoose').

her husband's a hot ging, tho
by Anonymous | reply 242 | March 12, 2020 1:32 AM |
Where do you guys see Sarah;s shows? I haven't seen her on HGTV or DYI in several years.
I used to love her show. She is a genius at picking a slew of fabrics & having them all miraculously work. That is a skill I do not have. I can pick 2 maybe 3 fabrics at best.

R243 I have Hulu and one show, Sarah off the Grid, was available in the HGTV on demand that Hulu has.

I watched last night's My Lottery Dream Home.
What the hell has happened to David?? He has new huge tattoos covering his entire neck all the way up to where the neck meets the chin/head..
He still has a fun & adorable personality & really makes that show due to his interpersonal rapport with the home buyers. Tattoos aren't my thing but I know some people like them. Even if you really like them why get them on such visible places like your entire neck & hands?
He has physically changed so much since his Color By Design show.

[quote] What the hell has happened to David?? He has new huge tattoos covering his entire neck all the way up to where the neck meets the chin/head..
It makes it difficult to watch the show because all you can focus on are his huge, hideous tattoos. Can't HGTV make him stop?
by Anonymous | reply 246 | March 14, 2020 10:18 PM |
r246 some shows have an appearance clause in their contracts - meaning the host cannot change their appearance drastically. I am guessing the Lottery Dream Home has no such clause.

Sarah Richardson has two shows back-to-back on DABL starting at 3 pm, EDT. I agree, she can mix patterns and the rooms are bright and fresh, robin's egg blue and pale green. I like how she explains the design process. Not sure when these shows were originally produced.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | March 23, 2020 7:46 PM |
What is DABL?
by Anonymous | reply 252 | March 23, 2020 9:20 PM |
DABL is a Transvaginal Mesh channel.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | March 23, 2020 10:05 PM |
DABL is one of those OTA sub-channels. It has a mix of old HGTV ( "Sell this house") and old cooking shows and my favorite, "Escape to the country" showcasing the gorgeous English countryside.

That must be a Canadian channel because it's been years since I've seen any of her shows in the US

They sowed Helena last night for a few moments. What a gorgeous little girl.
I was astounded at the huge problem they found under the house. They got 2 estimates and one was $50,000 and the other $18,000. How is that possible? Was one company just fleecing them or was the other company just pricing to do a shitty job>

I fucking loved the reno last night on Bargain Mansions. I wasn't a fan of the outside style but she worked her magic on the inside.
I need to know the maker of that harlequin tile she used in the master bath. Just gorgeous. In all her homes I drool over her choice in light fixtures & hardware
I was surprised she said they couldn't film any walk thru because of the quarantine. I thought the HGTV shows were filmed months in advance making them prior to COVID19.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | April 29, 2020 4:08 PM |
R273 I mostly loved that reno, though....
(a) I thought it was dumb of her to put a giant marble slab over the fireplace but then cover it up with a giant painting. (Although I think that marble slab had some inconsistencies that didn't look good on camera)
and
(b) I loved that harlequin/diamond tile in the bathroom and I liked the marble tile, but I thought they were too busy together....I would have maybe done a simpler tile to make the harlequin pop. At least on camera, the two patterns were fighting.
I was surprised about her mentioning that too, R273, but I think they usually film the work as it happens, and then later on film the walk through. Some are only done a few weeks before air. The last Home Town they showed (about two weeks ago) was, according to Erin Napier's Twitter, done about six weeks earlier.

I loved that harlequin tile so much I'd have done the entire bathroom in it. It probably would've been too much of a good thing but I fucking loved it. I wish I knew the maker & pattern name.

Mike Holmes did a US show Buy It Right. Filmed several episodes near me.
Had I known, I would have volunteered to take his big blond cock deep in my throat.

Just a big ball of testosterone. Yum!

by Anonymous | reply 283 | May 29, 2020 1:47 PM |
LOL R283.
Dudes like that probably really walk that way b/c they have enormous thighs and they have to sorta do that neanderthal stomp.
But I'll stick with my foot long cock fantasy. LOL

R282 I can't remember where in Scotland but the guy's name is Aaron Zipp. Sometimes the episodes come up in YouTube but this one hasn't yet.

Hi all, watching the 8/7/20 episode of My Lottery Dream Home in Delaware...What happened to David's hideous neck tattoos? Covered with make up? Lasered off?
Did David or HGTV hear the cries of the masses begging not to see neck tattoos during house showings? It is a mystery I cannot solve, watching on my computer.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | August 8, 2020 4:19 AM |
Some of the shows are repeats. So if no neck tats, then the show was taped before David got those monstrosities.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | August 8, 2020 4:25 AM |
R290---Checked the comcast info and it is all wrong. You are probably correct that this is an old one and no make up in use. Ugh next episode with big weird neck swirls.
