He returned to Nashville in 2007 as a songwriter, and didn't start winning awards until 2013/14, but he never had a problem finding people, male or female, to record his music. If you look at this list, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, etc... all recorded his songs well before Sam Hunt did in 2014.

I've said this before, the only criterion for the big labels in Nashville is that you look good in a video. You don't have to be able to sing that well. Blandly attractive people singing blandly appealing songs.
