How does Olivia de Havilland still have money?

Living in Paris for decades. She hasn't made a movie since the 1980s, and she never made the big money.

by Anonymousreply 115November 20, 2019 3:28 PM

I can’t speak directly for her, but your money should make money. With $2 million, she could live a non-extravagant lifestyle, even in Paris, in perpetuity.

Also, an owned home seemingly becomes cheaper over time, if she kept the same place.

by Anonymousreply 1November 17, 2019 6:19 PM

Old Dame Olivia's from the old de Havilland family and has old money.

by Anonymousreply 2November 17, 2019 6:19 PM

Her late husband was very well-off, iirc.

by Anonymousreply 3November 17, 2019 6:22 PM

I think Joan and Olivia got together in the 70s, when Joan needed money.

by Anonymousreply 4November 17, 2019 6:22 PM

how about Greta Garbo? there are some discussions that she was actually broke or close to, living a very frugal life in NYC, going to private parties or gatherings for free food etc. Even though her art collections worth millions after her death, but they probably meant nothing substantially if she didn't cash them out when she was alive.

[quote]Is Olivia the last old school classic Hollywood actress still alive?

Olivia de Havilland's "Gone With the Wind" fame puts her in the top tier. In that sense, I'd say she's the last one standing (with a walker no doubt).

But Angela Lansbury is still alive too. And working.

Oscar nomination in 1944 and 1945.

by Anonymousreply 20November 17, 2019 10:25 PM

I've always wondered the same thing about Joan Crawford. She decided she was done with movies in the early 70s, and stayed home the rest of her life until 1977 when she died.

Must be nice to be rich enough, to just on a whim retire out of nowhere because you didn't like the way you looked in a photo on the cover of a newspaper. But I guess after nearly 50 years of movie stardom, she had more then enough $$ in the bank to carry her until her dying day. And in luxury and comfort at that in a nice apartment, with help.

We should all be so lucky.

by Anonymousreply 21November 17, 2019 10:44 PM

[quote]Her late husband was very well-off, iirc.

Methuselah was rich?

by Anonymousreply 22November 17, 2019 10:47 PM

People act like these stars were making $10. They were making millions at some points. And it’s very very easy to turn millions into more millions.

by Anonymousreply 23November 17, 2019 10:47 PM

Joan wasn't terribly rich when she died, but she was comfortable.

As for Greta, I find it hard to believe that she'd rather cadge food at parties than sell a painting or two. Not saying it's impossible, just improbable.

by Anonymousreply 24November 17, 2019 10:55 PM

It's none of your goddamned business how she still has money

nosey

by Anonymousreply 25November 17, 2019 10:58 PM

By the time Kelly Clarkson’s 3rd album was released she said she was smart with her money and had enough to retire and never work again if she wanted.

Some of these women may have been the same.

by Anonymousreply 26November 17, 2019 10:58 PM

Didn't both Garbo and Swanson own a lot of Beverly Hills real estate? Garbo on Rodeo Drive?

by Anonymousreply 27November 17, 2019 11:01 PM

R37 yes.

Like Kim Basinger, they invested much of their money into property.

In the old south they always said it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it’s how much land you own.

by Anonymousreply 28November 17, 2019 11:03 PM

When you first make it big in entertainment, that's the $$ you should be putting aside for later on. Don't blow through the massive paychecks you receive early on. Put the $$ away, invest well and buy some really nice real estate and maybe even some really good art work, and make sure your entire estate is in order from day one.

You'll be more then fine when you're career have slow spots. Not a worry in the world.

by Anonymousreply 29November 17, 2019 11:05 PM

Garbo was very good with her money and was rich when she died.

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2019 11:05 PM

R35 she was awful with money. She would spend millions yearly

by Anonymousreply 37November 17, 2019 11:22 PM

It never made sense that one bad photograph would make Crawford go into complete seclusion. The woman adored the spotlight and being a celebrity. She was certainly publicity savvy enough to show up at another event a few weeks later looking smashing and in tip top shape. It wasn't like she stopped getting movie offers either. Around this time, she was being pursued by the Salkands for the Phyllis Thaxter role in Superman. It certainly would have been a better swan song than Trog.

Was it more of a case of her being done with playing movie star?

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2019 11:24 PM

R38 I think it had something to do with her appearance and how she looked in that photo on the cover of the newspaper the next morning.

She looked fine to me, but maybe she didn't like the way her wig looked in the photo.

Who knows what that was really about.

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2019 11:27 PM

She does it the old fashioned way. She gives blowjobs.

by Anonymousreply 40November 17, 2019 11:33 PM

are you fuckng kidding me? Greta Garbo had the first dime she ever made. Her estate was worth over 30 million dollars in 1990 when she died. She had at least 9 million dollars in cash, annuities and stocks and bonds at the time of her death. Her estate had enuf money after it was settled to keep her NYC apt and pay the maintenence for 30 years after her death. Her neice who inherited all her money just recently sold the apt for 6.5 million dollars. So either Greta or her neice has been paying the co op monthly maintence fees since 1953, You cant be a poor and do that dear She had a maid 6 days a week until the day she died.. One of her principal assets was several commercial buildings on rodeo drive in BH right in the center of the shopping district.

by Anonymousreply 41November 17, 2019 11:40 PM

Bette Davis estate was valued at around $1 million dollars at the time of her death. Which to me is very little considering how long her career was. 6 decades long I believe, and all of those films she starred in and her estate only hovered around $1 million at death.

That's crazy.

by Anonymousreply 42November 17, 2019 11:41 PM

Not everyone is good with money, dear.

by Anonymousreply 43November 17, 2019 11:42 PM

Bette Davis spent lavishly on her mother, her sister, and her daughter. She basically took really good care of her family her whole life, which is probably why she didn't have as much money as she should have at the time of her passing.

by Anonymousreply 44November 17, 2019 11:45 PM

Davis kept her deadbeat daughter and son-in-law in high style for decades before Hyman decided she'd make more money with the fictional My Mother's Keeper. It's clear now (and has been for a long while) that the daughter's delusional and evil.

by Anonymousreply 46November 18, 2019 12:09 AM

If you have a good financial advisor and you are practical when you spend your money, you will have much more in your elder years than when you were working.

My grandfather worked on an assembly line at P&G for 35 years. He and my grandmother lived simply, in a house of 1,200 square feet. He bought a few shares of P&G stock with every paycheck. When he died, the stock and investments were worth two million dollars. We were shocked. We later learned they saved it for the money they would need if they ever became really sick or needed to be admitted to a home. They didn't want us to worry about that. We were able to use the money to provide my grandmother 24 hour home care and regular at home medical care until she died three years later. There was still a million dollars left over.

by Anonymousreply 47November 18, 2019 12:25 AM

I read Joan Fontaine's autobiography years ago. Joan went on the lecture circuit because she needed the money, and then Olivia ended up doing the same thing. I think Olivia was more popular than Joan and cut into Joan's earnings. Joan was a tad bitter about it, IIRC.

At least during that period of time, when they were both past making regular movies, they needed to supplement their income.

by Anonymousreply 48November 18, 2019 12:31 AM

r21 Joan didn't really want to stop working, it's just that the offers were not coming in.

Bette Davis supported her mother and sister until the day they both died. She supported four husbands, who never had nearly as much money as she did. She paid for her retarded daughter's institution. And then her other daughter BD and BD's husband, who were a couple of useless leeches. She shelled out a small fortune on those two for twenty years. She basically spent most of her money on her family. Davis herself never lived at a very lavish "celebrity" level, it was much more of a comfortable upper-middle class level.

Joan worked past 1970. She did TV from 1970-1972 in several roles, ending her career in an episode of the TV show The Sixth Sense in 1972. She did a TV commercial for Pan Am in 1973, and then retired although she was still being sent scripts.

by Anonymousreply 72November 18, 2019 5:12 PM

I thought she looked great- I use to see her all the time in the 70s and very early 80- a bit in the 60s but I did not know who she was! I grew up in the same neighborhood where she lived. It was my Mom who pointed her out to me in a drug store on 1st Ave.

by Anonymousreply 73November 18, 2019 5:20 PM

You have to give her credit.

She looks good and seems relatively sharp for 103 years old.

by Anonymousreply 74November 18, 2019 5:32 PM

The difference between hitting a lecture circuit in the 80s and living independently now was probably a wealthy husband.

But the fact is, it's easy for a person with a few million in capital to live well in retirement. If they have a home that's paid off, don't live high or indulge in expensive bad habits, have a good tax accountant, and live within their means, they can live off the investment income and leave their principal intact. Although at Livvie's age, they'd better be spending some of that principal on good home health care. It's still cheaper than institutional care.

by Anonymousreply 75November 18, 2019 5:36 PM

r72 Garbo smoked heavily.

by Anonymousreply 76November 18, 2019 6:25 PM

Bette Davis, of course, was well-known as a heavy smoker and drinker and did it ever show on her face. She probably aged the worst of all the old Hollywood divas.

Rita Hayworth in the late 40s, got the highest paid deal ever given to a woman, and that was $750,000 for three movies (complete control over them). So while it was a lot, it wasn't what actors make now, even accounting for inflation.

FYI: Rita as typical, blew it and gave up the rights and paid most of it back. She was a mixed up woman with many issues.

by Anonymousreply 113November 20, 2019 1:55 PM

Greta Garbo never had kids and never got married, so that helped a lot in terms of her finances. Her parents died young, too. Lots of those old-time stars (like Bette Davis, as has already been discussed) had leeching kids, leeching relatives and leeching husbands to support. Garbo never had any of that so she got to live like a duchess for the rest of her life.

by Anonymousreply 114November 20, 2019 3:23 PM

Olivia was a lovely young woman, but in an understated way. She wasn't a stunner or a knockout, and she didn't present herself as a bombshell, she could play ordinary girls who worked as secretaries and got the guy, or she could play Maid Marian and make you believe Robin Hood was hot for her.

Errol Flynn WAS hot for her, in the mid 1930s, just so you know. They made a couple of films together and he desperately wanted her cherry, but he didn't get it.
