Maher is generally OK. Every so often he misreads his audience. I stopped watching when he began quoting Obama with an accent that seemed really disrespectful, like when a kid imitates another to sound cool. It was about the time that Osama Bin Laden was killed by The US military in a tense, covert operation. Maher pretended to be President Obama successfully campaigning for a second term by (miming) placing an imaginary head of Bin Laden in a podium, and said something like “here you go, M-Fers...”. It was just a crony bit in a monologue, but Maher’s stance was just so cocky and gross, like he waited for the moment to do his “cool thug” voice. When he does, his face becomes so punchable. Here again, Bill’s (straight?, white?) writers are punching up a bit with all the gay stereotypes they know, and some of it sounds sort of funny. But then there is Maher’s smirking jerk aftertaste as well. He’s a pretty self-loathing guy and hides that only partially. Even his devout fans zip through his preachier and cheesier bits and blowhard interviews (“I didn’t have you to talk about that!”). I see him in person sometimes, he looks jaundiced and desiccated, yet I will say his suits fit well and he is made up and lighted well on his show. Looks pretty good but sometimes lapses into a geriatric “wigger” and aspiring W.A.S.P.y frat boy.
