I would argue that Sharon Stone's career was ruined by the original Basic Instinct, because no one treated her seriously after seeing her twat exposed across the screen. (Even if she did manage to score an Oscar nod by playing another whore in Casino).
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 14, 2019 11:16 PM |
Anthony Perkins in Psycho? He was brilliant, the film is a cultural landmark. The film made his career and sort of messed up his career. He couldn't escape Norman, the role marked the rest of his career (want a creepy, unlikeable weirdo? Call Perkins)
Mind you, a working actor is a successful actor.

No, that's not true at all. Prior to Basic Instinct, her most notable role was playing Arnold's wife in Total Recall. But the role of Catherine Tramell made Sharon Stone a star. Films like Intersection, Diabolique, The Quick and the Dead, Gloria, Sphere, and Casino were very much a confirmation that she was in a different league career wise. Even doing another highly sexual role in Sliver, didn't damage Sharon's career. She could've easily been relegated to working for Zalman King in borderline soft core B movies that were popular in the 90's.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 15, 2019 12:16 AM |
Diabolique, Gloria, and Intersection were all flops, though
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 15, 2019 12:57 AM |
Stone only works as brittle, beautiful Cluster-B characters. That's why she was fantastic in Basic Instinct and Casino and forgettable in everything else.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 15, 2019 1:16 AM |
You do make a point about Stone. I love her to death, but she does work best as the aggressive, sexy, and crazy characters. She was wonderful in The Muse where she got to display a flair for comedy, but she was just playing a lighter, less lethal and terrifying version of what she became known for. I admired her for trying to play the frumpy mother in Lovelace, but she's not really a character actress.

Malcolm MacDowell : Caligula.
Before that, he was a success. Not in a blockbuster, way, no. But for the times, he was working with interesting filmmakers in respeted films. He was the main character in that debacle. After that, he was relagated to potboilers.

Jayne Mansfield went topless in the movie, "Promises... Promises!" (1963). She never had a decent role again.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 15, 2019 3:17 AM |
Mansfield was sort of at her sell-by date then, anyway, as the va-va-voom 50s bombshell gave way to the ethereal 60s waif by mid-decade.

Also, "Showgirls" turned Elizabeth Berkeley into a cult Icon. She otherwise would've been just a girl who was on an iconic teen television show once. Showgirls gets better with age. She was fearless in that movie. Her performance was instructed by Esterzhas. She was playing a crazy hyperbolic crack whore. I love that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 15, 2019 8:29 PM |
Showgirls isn't a good movie in the traditional sense, but it's stunning to look at and compulsively watchable. Tarantino described it as the last great American exploitation movie.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 15, 2019 8:32 PM |
I feel like Berkley plays Nomi exactly as she was supposed to be portrayed--a bipolar whore. Showgirls could have ended up as one of the best satires ever made if the dialogue was given some semblance of normalcy. But then it wouldn't have been a cult classic. Let's put it this way, what would you rather watch--Showgirls or Battlefield Earth? One is part terrible, part hilarious, party flashy and part satirical. The other is just terrible. I know what my choice is.

Helen Lawson as Auntie Mame. She was only in the roll for a week before Roz Russell replaced he due to "creative differences."
by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 16, 2019 12:34 AM |
Wasn't it Helen's appearance in "Who Gives a Flying Fuck?" that sent her back to Broadway? It was generally agreed that the "Flying Fuck" series had run its course by then.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 16, 2019 12:38 AM |
No, I think it was when Helen went to Britain for a part in "Carry on Cunting!" It has a different meaning in Britain than in the States. I don't think she ever recovered from that one.

He WAS a creepy unlikeable weirdo R28. He was a closet case. He never really “acted” in anything, he just played himself, a self loathing queen barely in control of his lisping femininity. That reads as creepy to people on screen.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | November 17, 2019 10:22 AM |
I am highly cynical about the belief that a single role can ruin a career. Think about how many highly regarded actors have an assortment of stinkers in their filmography. Their must be other factors for a sharp and sudden career decline.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | November 17, 2019 10:26 AM |
Kelly Osbourne - The Osbournes.
I'm sure her and Sharon envisioned a far loftier career than the one she's got, but not even nepotism could save her once she'd opened her whiny, unfortunate looking gob.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | November 18, 2019 1:33 PM |
I have often wondered if one role is enough to kill a career. After all, every actor has their fair share of stinkers on their IMDB pages. Maybe they're willing to forgive them more when they're young. I mean, Leprechaun sucks, but Jennifer Aniston still went on to become a huge star.
Sometimes, I think it's more about how dignified you appear in a shitty movie. Meryl Streep has made a ton of shitty movies, but she's always good in them at least. That's the mark of a good actor - the other actors can be terrible, the sets can be falling down around them, and the film could appear to be edited with a blowtorch, but if they still manage to turn in a respectable performance, they're fine.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 18, 2019 5:29 PM |
One role can definitely kill a career just as one bomb of a song can kill a music career. Just look at Robin Thicke.
