At this point, when someone does it, we should just outright ask: So when do you think we'll find out if you rape kids/women/kittens or got one of your mistresses another abortion or basically anything that reveals you as a repulsive person, because you know it's coming, asshole?

I think how it works is that your own sins are forgiven if you make other people miserable for their alleged sins. That seems to be the model the Catholic clergy are using. Prevent one woman from getting birth control cancels out raping one altarboy.
