by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 13, 2019 1:33 PM |
Is this the official thread?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 13, 2019 1:36 PM |
The only way Kellyanne can redeem herself is if she’s acting as a double agent and has a hand in taking Trump down.

"While the Founders did not intend that impeachment be employed for mere differences over policy, they also made impeachment a constitutional process that the Congress must utilize when necessary," Rep. Adam Schiff said in his opening statement.
Good start so far.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 13, 2019 2:35 PM |
The Repugs are trying to out the Whistleblower, Rick Wilson said that was going to be their strategy to disrupt the hearing

I think what they are trying to do is jam the first hour so that the television audience loses interest.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 13, 2019 2:37 PM |
I thought interruptions weren't allowed. They should receive some sort of penalty even if it's only a fine. Jordan would probably go bankrupt.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 13, 2019 2:38 PM |
Looks like there is another discussion over here.

I do like how Taylor is bringing up the Donbass region of Ukraine (the eastern border with Russia). Most people in the press and politicians only talk about Crimea.
Clearly Russia has designs on annexing Donbass too
by Anonymous | reply 88 | November 13, 2019 3:16 PM |

R35 such a tough guy. You’re gonna single handedly make the treason threads useless if we don’t bow to your awesome power?
It’s been trying to drag down the treason threads for how long now? And they’re still going strong despite its efforts.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | November 13, 2019 3:20 PM |
I had a friend who visited Ukraine in the past few years.
They LOVE Americans, they want to be the America of Eastern Europe. We really are the only thing keeping them from Putin's violence and aggression.
They could be a great and crucial ally and Trump really molested that nation with his extortionary corruption.
I think Taylor knows what a great strategic partner they could be, and how shitty this all went down.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 13, 2019 3:20 PM |
R35 is a laughing stock joke.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 13, 2019 3:21 PM |

Taylor is who Mueller should've been in his hearing.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | November 13, 2019 3:23 PM |
R94 plenty of eastern European countries are that same way. Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania all want to get the fuck away from Russia and embrace the US/western Europe
the damage Trump admin has done and continues to do is infuriating
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 13, 2019 3:23 PM |

Ryan Goodman @rgoodlaw: Taylor drops a bombshell. New evidence directly fingers President Trump. July 26 phone call where Trump checks in with Sondland on status of Ukraine’s Biden investigation. Side note: Sondland omitted this. Intentional omission of material facts is perjury. #ImpeachmentHearings
Steven Portnoy @stevenportnoy: In a new revelation -- which he says he was not aware of during his closed-door testimony -- Bill Taylor says a member of his staff was present when Sondland called Trump on July 26th. Taylor says his staffer overheard POTUS asking Sondland about "the investigations."
JackiSchechner @JackiSchechner: And there it is. Loud and clear. Taylor just implicated Sondland and Trump of attempted extortion in one sentence. #ImpeachmentHearings
Kyle Griffin @kylegriffin1: William Taylor details NEW info from a July 26 event: One of Taylor's staffers heard Gordon Sondland on the phone with Trump, "asking Ambassador Sondland about 'the investigations.' Ambassador Sondland told President Trump that the Ukrainians were ready to move forward."
by Anonymous | reply 133 | November 13, 2019 3:40 PM |
Rep. Eric Swalwell tweeted:
“More Ukrainians would undoubtedly die without security assistance,” said Ambassador Taylor.
He’s saying @realDonaldTrump put his own campaign’s needs over countless lives. People died because Trump wanted to cheat his way to re-election.

Jonathan Allen @jonallendc: Bill Taylor is basically saying Ukraine looked to the west for help in securing democracy and the message that came back was an extortion note.
Max Boot @MaxBoot: Bill Taylor is utterly credible and he just directly tied Trump to the attempt to use military aid to blackmail Ukraine into announcing a sham investigation of Joe Biden. If this isn’t an impeachable offense, nothing is.

I already know the repubs are going to say
"but you're assuming a lot of things without direct evidence, Mr Taylor. how can you know for certain?"
but Taylor's testimony is quite damning

Goldman's scripted questions are tailored to Taylor's previous bombshell testimony, and he’s following that line of questioning. He may have another line of questions for Kent that will follow logically on this.

And no, I'm not pissed about it - just confused about it because it seems like the same person says the same thing in each impeachment thread.

Matt Lewis @mattklewis: Republicans: Do you want your kids to grow up to be like Ambassador Taylor or Donald Trump? Which man is more trustworthy, honorable, or heroic?
Stand Up America @StandUpAmerica: Amb. Taylor just confirmed it. We know Trump used military aid to bribe Ukraine to interfere in 2020. We know anyone else who did that would be in jail. What we don’t know is if there’s a single Republican in Congress who will uphold their oath to defend our Constitution.
Ben Rhodes @brhodes: Sondland clearly lied in his first go around. Taylor’s testimony shows us why Sondland changed his story and why the Republican “no quid pro quo” defense is a lie.
John Bresnahan @BresPolitico: The level of detail in Taylor's public statement - similar to what he'd previously given in his closed-door deposition - is a huge problem for the WH/GOP argument against impeachment.
Joy Reid @JoyAnnReid: The seriousness and sobriety of Mr. Kent and Ambassador Taylor is quite a contrast from the reprised dossier conspiracy theories, time-wasting and ranting at the outset from Devin Nunes, Jim Jordan and the other Republicans. #ImpeachmentHearings
Ryan Goodman @rgoodlaw: This should put nail in GOP Staff talking point that aid was eventually released. Schiff's Q&A with Taylor shows huge human costs to aid suspension. The suspension sent strong signal to Russia that "would weaken Ukraine in negotiating an end to the war.” #ImpeachmentHearings

And only in Ukraine, R251. Nowhere else, just Ukraine.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | November 13, 2019 5:23 PM |
R250 it's fake concern but also remember the repub lawyer and repubs are leaving out how the Department of Defense had notified Congress that Ukraine had met its requirements to receive more aid and then Congress voted to give the aid on a bipartisan basis. Most people watching don't know this though so Castor might seem like a valid point to them
by Anonymous | reply 254 | November 13, 2019 5:23 PM |

[quote]telling you right now Fox has their moment right now with Jordan. They'll ignore everything else and show that "no linkage"will be the new chant and they'll be wondering if Taylor is confused or lying
Back in the Nixon era, you had the network News. Only 3. And they were responsible.
Let's face it: Americans are at work while this is being shown. This evening everyone will go to their favorite news outlets...from Fox to CNN, not to mention their Facebook feeds. Everyone will see a different spin.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | November 13, 2019 5:52 PM |
There's an obvious agenda being exposed here. Because the corrupt guys Biden was trying to get rid of, were doing the exact same thing in the Ukraine, getting rid of good people, etc. in their Justice and Intel operations, that Barr & company are attempting to do right here now. It is clearly the Putin method when he dismantles a state and inserts his own people, etc. This is both fascinating and terrifying.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | November 13, 2019 5:53 PM |
Trump has put it into the minds of Americans that there must be a quid pro quo for anything to be wrong.
Yes, we now know that there was a quid pro quo BUT the actual abuse of power was the very act of asking a foreign government to investigate a political rival
by Anonymous | reply 301 | November 13, 2019 5:53 PM |
Who cares whether or not Ukraine knew about the stopping of aid at the point of the call? It would know soon enough, wouldnt it?
The real question is why did Trump hold up the aid?

The ONLY reason the GOP wants to out the whistle blower is to focus all attention on him and away from the actual charges. They want to vilify him/her personally
At this point, everything the whistleblower said has been verified time after time by witnesses.
His identity is irrelevant.

R314 wins the gold star. This is exactly why they want him outed. There were rumors of several other whistle blowers, as well as confirmation from the current whistle Blower's attorney, about another one that he's representing...notice this died down since the Republicans became insistent on outing the one now.

They worship a draft-dodging trashbag of shit from Queens because he does the bidding of special interest and would've done business with the Bin Laden family on 9/11 given the chance and no one found out.
This was always how Trump did business. He has NO moral compass. A scumbag from NYC and I'm a lifelong NYer. People like Trump are a dime a dozen in how they operate. Of course this happened. Someone like me looks at it from the perspective of knowing who Trump has always been and how he does business.

It's curious to me these hearings don't have great urgency - even to me who is so disturbed by this President. Who remembers the Nixon years, and how those hearings gripped the nation. I think the explanation is simple:
Everyone knows that the President abused his power. Some believe that's ok. Some believe it's not ok. It's that simple. Impeachment will happen. The Senate will not convict.
Everything depends on the 2020 election.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | November 13, 2019 6:42 PM |

R364 Not really sanitized, more rationalized. I think Republicans think it's ok for the President to act like an autocrat. To abuse power for his own personal purposes, to dissemble and gaslight, to obstruct justice, and demolish traditional norms. I think they elected a strong Leader who would behave in this way. That's why it's even more disturbing to me - not just hiding in the constructed right-wing media-driven echochamber, but actually believing that abusing power is ok, if you like the Leader doing that. This is proto-fascism.

Katy Tur @KatyTurNBC: With all due respect, it’s odd Jordan and GOP keep harping on whistleblower when his/her allegations have been corroborated by the two men sitting in front of them - and the the other witnesses to come.
Asha Rangappa @AshaRangappa_: Has any GOP member explained why — if as Jim Jordan says Ukraine is “one of the three most corrupt countries on the planet” — Trump trusted them to investigate two U.S. citizens for...corruption? 🤔
Jacqueline Alemany @JaxAlemany: Jordan just claimed that GOP “will never get a chance” to question the whistleblower. The whistleblower made an offer to answer GOP’s written questions - Nunes has ignored the offer.

From Nate Silver site:
NATHANIEL RAKICH3:30 PM Just some final thoughts as we start to wrap up here: If the impeachment hearings are a playoff series (and political scientists have found that their effect is mostly cumulative, not instantaneous), Democrats won Game 1. Kent and especially Taylor gave a detailed summary of how they saw the Ukraine scandal unfold, with the cherry on top of a new allegation that Trump himself asked about the investigations over the phone.
The Republican counterattacks mostly consisted of a difficult-to-follow staff cross-examination and trafficking in anti-Biden conspiracy theories. Although some of the individual members got around to making good points (e.g., about how Kent’s and Taylor’s testimony was secondhand), the GOP defense seemed geared toward a Fox News-watching audience who doesn’t need to be persuaded.
I think the smart bet is still that public opinion will be difficult to move, but I think Democrats did more to convince swing voters today.

It's beginning to leak out about how nervous Republicans are about this. In my opinion, this is just now becoming real for many Republicans--not Trump yet, though. None of this will change the Trump base. He will be impeached but not convicted. But remember we just need to change the outcome in 3-4 states, that went for Trump by 70k votes. We just need to flip 70k voters in key states.

by Anonymous | reply 503 | November 14, 2019 2:34 AM |
While some have argued that Schiff seems bloodless and dispassionate in his chairmanship of the hearing today, I argue that he totally knows what he’s doing.
As a former prosecutor, he knows that you can’t start out with your volume on 11, a lesson that failed lawyer Gym Jordan never learned.
A case is like a song or novel, it should start out soft and then build up to a crescendo during which your strongest, most emotional testimony should fall. This peak is going to happen late next week, when they have someone appearing who was actually on the call and can give first hand testimony of not only the content but also the spirit of the call.
He is a great prosecutor and knows exactly what he’s doing. Watching these hearings will be a masterclass in the way to present a case.

BRavo, R500. The exact number is 77,744. That is exactly how many votes Trump needed to win the electoral college. They were stolen, but then, gods only know how many were actually stolen. Probably more than 100,000. The game plan was to make it seem close even though all polling, including exit polling showed that was not the case. Tighter? yes, but not nearly as close as they wanted us to believe. This time we can't afford a close race. We need overwhelming turnout and should be fighting right now, and supporting efforts to stop suppression, and fraud at the state level.

Um, R541 I believe Speaker Pelosi was throwing around BRIBERY today...as explicitly stated in the Constitution related to impeachment charges.
She can do that, as she is leader of the House. Fact witnesses like Taylor and Kent would not.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | November 14, 2019 6:57 PM |
Wow, r541, that's sad, even by troll standards. It's as if you guys aren't even trying anymore. I guess that roll of Russian toilet paper ain't gonna buy itself.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | November 14, 2019 6:58 PM |
R544 So we have gone from Russian collusion to quid pro quo and all of the journeys in between and now we have bribery. WOW! This is like a script from House of Cards.
FYI - Pelosi is totally panicked today so now she is rolling out that the passing of the USMC act passage is imminent.
Get ready for 4 more years of Trump. Maybe 8 if he can get the laws changed.

I agree. CNN and Santorum must have some kind of relationship.

r546 can only attack Democrats because there's not one thing he could defend Trump with. Just stating the facts in a brief summary makes Trump and his minions look guilty as hell, so all these trolls can do is deflect to the Democrats.

What we need is some great humor right now. We need for SNL and a host of other to mock, ridicule and make witty observations. The end result being the GOP loses credibility with their base. Stuff like Moscow Mitch sticks! Use it. We need to develop more self assurance. I mean. Did you think they wouldn't fight back? Did you think they wouldn't come up with excuses or lies to cover theirasses? This is not unexpected. What is discouraging is that we haven't been smart enough to anticipate and neutralize it. We need to fight smart and have some fun with their stupidity. Gym Jordan needs to be a regular feature on any show with a comedian. What I want to see is abuse and ridicule heaped on Trump and the GOP members of the Senate and do it so ef fectively we can run their asses out of Washington.

r539, Great advice but r534 is what we call a CONCERN TROLL.
They try to bring everybody down by making everything seem hopeless. They want us to give up.
In other words they are a Trump deplorable.
You're welcome.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | November 14, 2019 11:34 PM |
R558, I know where you’re coming from, but you’re deluding yourself if you don’t think that many people who hate Dump feel—at times—like what r534 feels. I know some of my friends (all Dump haters) feel helpless and hopeless; because of the shit storm of crap Republicans are throwing out there, they think nothing will ever change. Rather than telling them to nut up, how about a dialogue on how all of us can maintain our focus. It doesn’t help to call someone a troll who may indeed be expressing their frustration. Block them if you think they’re a troll, but I honestly don’t know how you can tell.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | November 14, 2019 11:54 PM |
Agree R559. It’s OK for people to express the frustration that we all feel. The Repukes in general and tRump in particular has gotten away with so much shit that it is impossible for people to not feel hopeless at time.

We may not be able to do what we want to do, but we have to do what we can. We have to fight. We have to push back. We don't have the luxury of giving in to our fears and anxieties. If we don't succeed, I still intend for them to be bruised and bloodied and weakened so that they never win again. I want to damage them.
I want them to dread being in a fight with us. We need to believe we are badasses and go after them, giving no quarter. Our way of life, our country, this planet, etc. depends on it. We have to fight. So after you wring your hands and wallow in fear and anxiety, put on your big boy pants and your steel toed shoes and get out here and kick some ass.
The only defeat that matters is self defeat. If your friends wallow tell them to man up and quit being pussies. We have no choice. At the end of the day I need to know I did everything I could.I will not be one of those who sits there as a some fucking victim and wonders how this all happened. I intend to fight until I drop dead in my tracks. Period.

R527, I think Nicolle Wallace's son is 8. She mentions him constantly and used to say "My 7 year old" but lately has been saying "I have an 8 year old at home".
Whatever his age, he's too fat (assuming he's the child on her lap in her Twitter picture at the link).

[quote]Why aren't the press
There are an infinite number of things of which the press must answer, but they never will. Not a more arrogant, entitled group of irresponsible assholes will you find.
Trump is fucking president because of them. I don't want to her about Russia. They normalized that asshole for years. The birther shit should've been the end of him, but it wasn't. Scumbags like Wolf Blitzer continued to interview him along with other birthers - as if ANYONE needed to hear from him.
The press serve themselves and ratings, not the people.

OPINION: Take it from a TV critic: Day 1 of Trump impeachment hearings had ‘stay tuned’ written all over it
– It was good, gripping TV, dramatic at times, with occasional comic levity and some distinctive, memorable characters. That’s what Democrats wanted from the first day of the televised impeachment hearings. .
What they didn’t get was a big bombshell “gotcha” revelation. But that could be coming. This was a slyly arranged first day.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | November 15, 2019 1:48 AM |
Yes, R564. We shouldn't be surprised that a coward like Gym Jordan, who said nothing when he knew that boys were being sexually assaulted, would have no problem backing up someone like Trump. The reason his posture is so hunched over is because he has no backbone.

A Rethug congressman was on Chris Hayes tonight spewing nonsense how impeachable offenses are those that would be punishable by death (or that at the time of the founders would have been) like treason. Chris per usual stammered incredulously that BRIBERY is written in the Constitution but nobody gets the death penalty for bribery. The Rethug didn't miss a beat and went on about how unqualified Hunter Biden got a position on a company's board.
I was like, Chris you shouldn't be stammering, you should be talking over him how completely unqualified Jared and Ivanka got WH positions only because of nepotism, and are accepting bribes by foreign governments in the form of Ivanka's Chinese trademarks, or that relative of Jared's who was hawking real estate to investors in China with promises for access to the WH, and tons of stuff we don't know yet.

Are they fucking retarded. There was absolutely a bombshell on the first day. The revelation that there was yet ANOTHER phone call, this time between Trump and Sondland, in which he expressly stated that all he gave a fuck about w/r/t Ukraine was the “Biden investigations.”
Why is the media retarded? Also, I agree with the poster about everything he said about Chris Hayes. Why are Ivanka and Jared not being brought up constantly as actual examples of special favors and nepotism? You know those two are fucking like rabbits and cheers-ing with flutes of champagne every night, literally laughing about how much they’ve been able to get away with shit.

But, that's the issue R561. How do you push back? Nikki Haley does some interview yesterday and says that Trump doesn't lie and never has lied. There are very intelligent people, who have very impressive degrees, that believe with all of their heart and soul that Trump has built 300 or miles of wall when he reality he has built nothing. There are those idiots, "Diamond and Silk" who actually did a video of where they (and their audience) read the transcript, and... On and on...

Let's hope so, R581. I think and believe that Miss Nancy and Mr. Schiff are playing this quite correct thus far but I'll admit that I've become upset in the past because it seemed as if Democrats weren't doing anything and nothing they could do would make any impact. There was even a thread on DL started by someone who was pissed with the Democrats. So, I'm not the only one.
