Have Russians always been such nasty, disgusting people?

It's in their blood from years of misery, alcoholism, inbreeding and fetal alcohol syndrome. Their misery seeps through their troll posts.

I was in Moscow and St Petersburg for a few months about 16 years ago, and the Russians I met were wonderful. They were warm, kink, intelligent. I was invited to their families for dinner, i met they rparents, etc. Granted, that could have been a result of the bubble I was wrapped in, but they were nothing like I expected them to be. Perhaps it is different now that the country is starting to slide back to its totalitarian ways. Moscow and St P are beautiful cities, and the people are so incredibly good looking.

From personal experience, Russian women are super smart, super crazy, super lethal. I give them a very wide berth.

It isn't surprising that they are having a problem with democracy. They have very little experience with it. They went almost directly from an autocratic monarchy, to autocratic communism, to a "democracy" that has been dominated by oligarchs and organised crime. The west, especially NATO and the UN, should have entered Russia after the fall of communism and truly helped them to build democratic institutions, but we largely left them to figure it out for themselves. It isn't surprising that they didn't manage to get it right.

That BBC documentary on gay violence in Russia broke me. You can do whatever the fuck you want to gay people there and nobody gives a flying fuck. They post torture videos on VK (Russian Facebook) with their faces showing knowing nobody will ever go after them.

Russians make very good friends and very bad enemies. They are warm, kind and generous to people they know and like; they are rude and uncaring, at best, to those whom they don't know and who can't benefit them. This is common in less-developed countries, where it's mostly a dog-eat-dog world. We in the rich West are very (very, very) sheltered.

Russians are also decades behind the West in attitudes toward human rights - not surprisingly, having missed all the developments in that area from 1917 to 1990. In the West, WWII and the Holocaust are key to understanding our modern attitudes toward minorities and authoritarianism. In Russia, WWII was a fight for their survival as a nation; everything else is secondary.

Before you are too sure it's inbreeding or otherwise inborn, consider the sort of thing that went on in America and Europe within the last 100 years.

Communism, especially the Stalin years, broke the country and culture.

The Russian people can, and historically have been, manipulated into grotesque acts. Frequently the Russian Orthodox Church is behind it. Today, the Church and government are again one as they were under the Tsar.

So whipping up hatred against different groups has been stock in trade for centuries. Usually, it was Jews but frequently any other minority group who fell out of favor. Typically, religious minorities are always a target. The church organizes and promotes violence including murder.

I call bull on excusing Russians' foul behavior because of their traumatic past. Other, poorer countries have had equally traumatic history of being exploited and they're not nearly as villainous as the Russkies.

To know them is to hate them.

When I was at Uni 15 years ago it was very chic for the linguists to do Russian, or Russian in combination with French. England only started to sour on Russians when the oligarchs took over Kensington, and even now people only refer to the oligarchs as rude, not Russians in general.

Is the near-universal hatred of Russia on here an American thing or just a DL thing? Is it part of a wider xenophobia or is it specific? Also, how much of it is a holdover from the cold war?

In general or on the DL r23? No, I was on here until from 2008 to about 2013, then for some reason forgot all about it, then rediscovered it this year.

We have this exact same thread with the exact same title every three months or so. The only difference this time is that there are no pictures of drunks passed out in the street.

I'm very accepting of other nationalities and cultures and have been exposed to many different nationalities in various ways and I do think that Russians IN GENERAL are some of the rudest most unpleasant people I've encountered, with only a single exception.

My father used to rant about how the only thing more unlikeable than the fact that Russians are rude, violent thugs is that they are hardy and keep on keeping on.
