It's a wealth imbalance. For such a wealthy nation, the majority of people are getting screwed.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 7, 2019 4:07 PM |
I believe it all started over a fare hike in the Santiago metro system. Of course, that was just the tip of the iceberg, but students started a fare evasion campaign which amped up into structural damage against the train stops.

R33 We did, after a cruise. When I was planning the trip, I told the TA (herself Chilean) I wanted to spend three nights in Santiago. Her response: "That's two nights too many." She was right.

Unsurprisingly, it seems Russian troll involvement has played a hand in stoking the flames of conflict in Chile. What Putin gains from such chaos in a faraway Andean nation remains less clear, other than the fact that he seems hellbent on playing the role of global Joker.

Chile privatized it's version of social security a few years back, which became some sort of idiot talking point for the republicans. I recall Chile being cited as a country that created and ran their retirement system correctly and well. I think their economy was also said to be great, especially in contrast to the perpetual messes around them. This was in the 90s, I think.
In the 1980s, I heard this quip: “there are four types of economies: Capitalism, Communism, Japan, and Argentina”. (Millennials, Japan was unstoppable, until it stopped in the late 80s. Argentina has never been able to sustain a stable, prosperous economy.)

I was in Chile in July (the southern winter), and agree that Santiago isn't where you want to be, even when the riots are off. Huge, sprawling, crowded, gray, smoggy city. Some really interesting architecture, and surrounded by awesome mountains, but shabby, grubby, and full of homeless people camping on the streets. We stayed in a four-star hotel, but there were a couple of homeless people camping in the driveway, and our host shrugged and said "The richer Chile becomes, the higher prices rise, and the more homeless you see". Apparently the gap between rich and poor has been getting bigger, but unlike in the US, the regular people aren't taking it lying down!
So we skipped Santiago and went out to the coast to look for many-colored rush-tyrants. This was the only part of my stay in Santiago I really liked - Santa Lucia Hill Park. A really awesome park full of the oddest mix of fanciful architecture from many eras.

Chilean here, I signed just to reply this thread.
First, stop with the fear to those all mighty russian trolls, you are brain washed to believe Russia is the devil and sound paranoid.
This riots have nothing to do with the media influences and everything with people day by day experience. People work 45 hours a week for a minimum wage less than a half of yours. If you live in Santiago, you could expend easily 3 or more hours a day in public transportation, crowded at the top hours. That's why the subway price started the riots. In papers is a modern system, by in reality treat people like animals. So you work 10 hours, 3 hours in mobilization, sleep 8 hours, that leave you 2 hours for yourself. The minister suggested to wake early for cheaper metro ticket. It's fucking infuriating. We are a mix of Spanish conquers and natives named "Mapuches" they were mostly warriors, they fought until the end of 1800. They still fight now for their territory. In Chile, 10% of the people own 70% of the wealth. Poor regulated free market is dehumanizing and unfair, and people is tired of it. Yes, we are doing better than other countries in the zone, but is not a competition, it's about quality of life. When I see international news, for example, when Trump shutdown the government, i couldn't understand why US people did nothing about it. Sorry for the long text and the poor english.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | November 11, 2019 5:16 PM |
Thank you, R108. I was there this winter (my summer), and yes, by and large Chile was a beautiful country, that seemed to offer its citizens a good quality of life. Everyone on the trip talked about the possibility of living there, which isn't usually the case when Americans travel. Except in Santiago, where homelessness abounded, and where you've just explained the massive crowds at every access to public transport.
So yes, don't be like the Americans, who've let their quality of life erode and their government go corrupt, without protest. Hold on to what you have!
