What are some covers of songs that you liked more than the original, or just as much?
I say Gloria Estefan's "Love On A Two Way Street" is better than the original, but I know some will say otherwise.

There are two definitive versions of the Rolling Stones classic "Tumbling Dice" one by the originators and the other by Linda Ronstadt.. I always preferred the Ronstadt version as Ronstadt was a better vocalist than Mick Jagger and could really rock out those vocals.. But then again when Ronstadt did covers by Buddy Holly, Neil Young or the Everly Brothers to name just a few she made them her own..

Country Queen Martina McBride covered Linda Ronstadt's version of the classic Everly Brothers song "When Will I Be Loved" and she actually referred to this cover in this performance as a classic Linda Ronstadt song..
I think Martina nailed it and came as close any one else in matching Linda's vocals which is saying something because Martina is one of the best country vocalists in her own right.

Stevie Nicks fans may vehemently disagree but I always thought Natalie Maine's vocals were far superior in the cover of the classic Fleetwood Mac song "Landslide"...
The original version by Fleetwood Mac went to #51 on the Hot 100 back in 2008 while the cover by The DIxie Chicks hit the top 10 on the Hot 100 and charted as high #7 back in 2002..
So yet another example of how a cover can actually chart higher than the original.

Someone who came of age in the 1980s would still fixate on the early 1990s. They wouldn't be "stuck in their ways"/looking backward yet. Additionally, there's often a cultural "hangover" from the previous decade.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | November 11, 2019 8:07 AM |
R83 Nice try at saving face but Belinda's fans weren't stuck in their ways (nor fixated on her in '93-94) when it came to buying her singles or requesting them on the radio. Her chart career here in the states was over in 1990.
There was no cultural hangover for BC or many other "80s artists" by that time.

I'm not a Radiohead fan ("KAAAMA POWIIICCEE") and I do appreciate Pink Floyd unadulterated, but I admit the Sparklehorse take of 'Wish You Were Here' with Thom Yorke could be the best version of this song and haunts me still.
The original song is about yearning for death - or at least, a release into something else better than a sterilised existence - whereas this cut feels like the process of dying is already underway for the narrator as he remarks for a final time on his sad empty surroundings. This was especially fitting when the track was played over the ending of the movie LORDS OF DOGTOWN, in the scene where a young character is revealed to be dying of brain tumors and has been neglected by his friends.

One of the better adaptations of a Beatles song from that awful movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonelyhearts Club Band. Aerosmith makes the song sleazier and more sinister. Also, Steven Tyler and Peter Frampton grappling together in spandex was kinda hot. They were also both hotter in 1978.

The Bangles did a lot of covers. I think of their version of "Manic Monday" over Prince's. And while "Hazy Shade of Winter" is classic Simon & Garfunkel, I like their pop version too.

R168 There is no match for Connie's Where The boys Are, but the Czars' version is terrific and more reminiscent of Connie's softer version of the song. Connie has several versions of that song, but the hit version is iconic and superb in her handling of pitch, etc.

Interesting, r258. I didn't know it existed. Yet nothing can take the place of either the Shirelles' original or Linda Ronstadt's "soundtrack of my life" version. My first boyfriend played Linda's version at me almost every time we had sex, then went on to break my heart (and leave me with "Long, Long Time").
Here are the Shirelles. I can't imagine anyone doing it better.
