Milton Berle hosting SNL

I thought the Milton Berle episode of SNL from 1979 was never supposed to see the light of day after its initial broadcast because Lorne Michaels thought it was so terrible, I just watched it on the NBC app and aside from being surprised to see it on there at all, I certainly didn’t think it was dreadful. His monologue is lousy, but the sketches are ok. Has anyone else seen this?

I saw it when it was originally on. I only remember it because everyone said Berle was a total entitled pain in the ass.

It was dreadful because it had Jane Curtain in a "funny" role.

r1

He was a pain in the ass because he was HUGE

Yeah, I thought this thread was going to be about how awfully he treated cast and crew. Or R3's point. Anytime there's an Uncle Milty thread, his legendary schlong becomes the inevitable topic of discussion.

Wasn’t there a skit about a clown family with huge butts? One of them bent over and they showed home movies using his butt as a screen?

Loved the "Village Persons" - I remember that from the first viewing. This article explains the drama.

[quote] Jane Curtain

Oh, dear.

He was no Miskel Spillman.

The worst of that time was Louise Lasser's episode. That's another one Lorne tried to hide.

Meanwhile,Carol Burnett wasn't hip enough for his brand of innovative comedy.

Nathan Lane told a story about one of Berle's exes leaving him and then after being photographed with Hitler. Berle had the newspaper clipping in his wallet, would pull it out and shout, "She left me for Hitler!"

Reportedl Adolf was less controlling in relationships.

Here's a softer side of Uncle Miltie an interview conducted later in his life.

Milton was on the Mike Douglas Show once & started talking about how he got some girl pregnant & she needed an abortion & how sad it was for him & Richard Pryor burst out laughing in his face.

Richard grew up in a brothel, so maybe it triggered some nervous laughter.

In 1974, Berle had a minor altercation with younger actor/comedian Richard Pryor when both appeared as guests on The Mike Douglas Show. At the time, Berle was discussing the emotional fallout from an experience he had with impregnating a woman he was not married to, and having to decide whether or not they would keep the child. During his talk, Pryor let out a laugh, to which Berle took exception and confronted him, stating, "I wish, I wish, Richard, that I could have laughed at that time at your age, when I was your age, the way you just laughed now, but I just couldn't ... I told you this nine years ago, and now I'll tell you on the air in front of millions of people: Pick your spots, baby." This prompted Pryor to mockingly quip back, "All right, sweetheart."
