I am new to Reddit and I notice people using the term "hamily" for people on Reddit. I assume it is a play off on family but why? Thanks
What does hamily mean on Reddit?

[quote]The group of people that you go HAM (Hard as a Mother Fucker) with, this would include partying, drinking, looking for pussy.

A group of people you go HAM, hard as a motherfucker partying.

Thank you r1 and r2.
That seems kind of silly to refer to a group of people you are posting with that, but at least now I know what it means.

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of subreddits do you enjoy and what impression do you have of Reddit, OP? I've been on it (and on DL) for so long that I can't assess it objectively anymore.

r4 this is embarrassing but I started watching the 90 Day Fiance shows and since I don't have anyone in real life to discuss them with I went to Reddit and found 3 forums (subreddits?) for them. I noticed sometimes things get repeated and there is a lot of silliness but I just scan through quickly and click on what I am interested in.
I have commented a few times and one comment I thought was benign got down voted, it was about Jenny on The Other Way and I figured maybe some people feel sorry for her so don't like anything considered negative said about her. Also I have heard some of the people on the show read there so who knows.

r5 HA! That would only be embarrassing if you were the only person watching that show. The fact that the largest one covering it has 104k subscribers is pretty impressive.
Yes, the downvoting thing is tricky. I definitely adjust my posting style A LOT to be less bitchy whenever I switch from DL to Reddit. But it's a learning curve, so don't take it too personally if you get downvoted now and then. If you frequent them often enough, you soon learn what's considered acceptable in which subreddit and what isn't. And of course, it's even trickier in reality show subreddits where everyone has their favourites...

AHA r6 you know what I speak of. Chrissie Teigen reads there too.

Reddit culture makes me puke. It’s so lame and reeks of late teens to mid twenties men but not in a fun way. When I was in that age range it was fun and funny but I cringe to think back on it.
These days the only sub I check out is muacirclejerk (it’s about makeup, which I know nothing about, but there are funny people there).

Reddit can be useful because you can usually find a subreddit for anything, and some of the small communities can be quite nice places.
But overall the cultural is very 19 year old straight white guy which can definitely be frustrating.

r8 It really depends on the subreddit. I don't come across any behaviour you described in those subreddits I frequent.

R9/R10 I do agree. I spent more time in the default subs back then. The larger, more popular subs have this style of discussion that is very grating. Cliches are hardly unknown on DL but Reddit’s are so...reddity. Anywhere else on the internet, they’d be mocked to oblivion.

Oh, yes, the defaults are bad in that regard. Insufferable, even.

It's easier to find non-toxic pockets on Reddit than on Twitter. I've managed to wean myself off Twitter completely and I feel so much better for it.

True, and good on you, r15
