Why was Irene Cara allowed to play a Black woman?

Nearly ever role she had during her short period of popularity in the late 70s and early 80s was as a Black woman. She’s in fucking Roots for goodness sakes.

She’s Latina and I don’t think she’s even Afro Latina.

[quote]She’s Latina

I didn't know this. I always bought her as a black chick. In fact I don't think I even thought about it much.

She was called Coco Hernandez in Fame. That's a Latina name. What are you talking about?

by Anonymousreply 2November 3, 2019 7:53 AM

Because it was the 70’s and 80’s. Back then people didn’t care about things like that.

by Anonymousreply 3November 3, 2019 7:54 AM

I thought she was Hawaiian. 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 4November 3, 2019 8:18 AM

Who would allow a person to play another race? Shocking!

Her mother is Cuban and her father is Afro-Latino

by Anonymousreply 6November 3, 2019 10:55 AM

She’s a black Latina, that’s why

I thought she was Swiss🇨🇭

by Anonymousreply 8November 3, 2019 11:26 AM

I had to google R6's emoji 🤷🏻‍♂️- apparently it means "shrug".

by Anonymousreply 9November 3, 2019 11:28 AM

I mean R4's emoji 🤷🏻‍♂️, not R6's.

by Anonymousreply 10November 3, 2019 11:29 AM

It's so tiny.

by Anonymousreply 11November 3, 2019 11:29 AM

Most Cubans are Afro Latino

by Anonymousreply 12November 3, 2019 11:29 AM

I never knew that, R12 - 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 13November 3, 2019 11:31 AM

Same with the Dominican Republic denizens. They’re all Afro-Latino and mixed.

by Anonymousreply 14November 3, 2019 12:03 PM

So OP is obese and stupid then.

by Anonymousreply 15November 3, 2019 1:38 PM

^^thats incorrect, most cubans are 100% white. (about 65% of them)

Irene, however, is very clearly afro latina.

by Anonymousreply 16November 3, 2019 2:19 PM

The Cubans that stayed after Castro took over are mostly black or mixed race, [R12]. The intellectuals, doctors, lawyers, business owners who left were mainly Caucasian. The Cuban leaders before and after revolution were not Afro-Latino.

by Anonymousreply 17November 3, 2019 2:32 PM

Was Sheena Easton African American?

by Anonymousreply 18November 3, 2019 2:38 PM

Irene's father was Afro-Rican.

by Anonymousreply 19November 3, 2019 2:58 PM

😂 Because She Can.

by Anonymousreply 20November 3, 2019 3:02 PM

Sometimes OP wonders where he's been, who he is, does he fit in?

by Anonymousreply 21November 3, 2019 3:04 PM

Lol, r21...

by Anonymousreply 22November 3, 2019 3:27 PM

You may not win but you can't be thrown!

by Anonymousreply 23November 3, 2019 8:32 PM

If you actually watched Fame, she states she's both Latina and Black. Puerta Rican if I recall.
