Celebrities Very BAD or Very GOOD with Money

Johnny Depp is like a financial trainwreck you can't look away from. The man lights money on fire: spending millions to shoot Hunter S Thompson's ashes into space, buying a French village, an entire cul de sac in the Hollywood Hills, etc etc etc.

On the other end, you have Lyle Waggoner who took his money and started a business renting custom trailers for film shoots, making money hand over first for his family to this die.

Who else in Hollywood has been SPECTACULARLY bad or good with their money?

by Anonymousreply 289November 24, 2019 9:45 PM

Very bad: MC Hammer, Doris Day ' Very good: Gloria Swanson, Gene Autry

by Anonymousreply 1November 2, 2019 6:55 AM

Very good: Natalie Schafer, who played Mrs. Howell on "Gilligan's Island". She was the real millionaire on the show because she had invested her earnings from Broadway and small Hollywood parts so wisely.

Also, Lucille Ball, who was a good businesswoman.

Bad = Lindsay Lohan, Good = Hilary Duff

by Anonymousreply 3November 2, 2019 7:03 AM

Good = Jodie Foster

Bad = Cher

by Anonymousreply 4November 2, 2019 7:33 AM

Bad: Nicolas Cage, buying castles and haunted mansions.

by Anonymousreply 5November 2, 2019 7:42 AM

Vincent Gallo - Someone posted a story about his buying a house for $5 million. I wondered how in the world he'd come up with that much money. It's not as though he's ever had a big payday in Hollywood. The response was that he'd made money as a young man selling his paintings. He took that money, the money he made from modeling, and whatever he's managed to make from movies and bought apartments or houses (as residences) that appreciated. The latest article I found just now was that he bought a $3.25 million house in Tucson. He looks like an ambulatory schizophrenic you'd avoid on the train, but the house is actually pretty nice.

Courtney Love is the celebrity financial trainwreck of all trainwrecks. She's admitted to blowing through hundreds of millions on drugs, expensive living, and fine things. She inherited a fuck ton after Kurt's death, but I don't believe she has managed it well at all. She recently sold a house she's had in WA state since the '90s that was left derelict and uninhabited. That alone makes me think she could be running out of money.

by Anonymousreply 7November 2, 2019 8:10 AM

Bad: Toni Braxton has now filed for bankruptcy [italic]three[/Italic] times. Hey, Toni, maybe you should have listened to the advice Oprah Winfrey gave you instead of bitching that she was 'so frickin mean' to you.

Good: Oprah Winfrey

by Anonymousreply 8November 2, 2019 9:21 AM

Debbie Reynolds: bad with money. Blamed it on her ex-husband(s).

by Anonymousreply 9November 2, 2019 9:32 AM

Good:

-Apparently Crispin Glover. A few years back there was a DL Tasteful Friends thread on his newly purchased mansion in the Czech Republic and a lot of th comments were surprised that he even had that kind of money. Pretty impressive for a character actor.

-As much as I hate to admit it, the Kardashians.

Bad:

All the ones I can name off the top of my head (MC Hammer, Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, etc.) have already been mentioned

by Anonymousreply 10November 2, 2019 9:38 AM

Good = Madonna

Bad = Kate Jackson

by Anonymousreply 11November 2, 2019 9:47 AM

Good; Greta Garbo, Randolph Scott, Jane Wyman - all died filthy rich due to smart investments. I think Garbo & Scott in real estate and Wyman in TV.

by Anonymousreply 12November 2, 2019 10:05 AM

Good: Dean Martin - bought up large swathes of California real estate

Bad: Sammy Davis Jr.

by Anonymousreply 13November 2, 2019 10:24 AM

Good: Mick Jagger

Bad: Rue McLanahan (ex husband)

by Anonymousreply 14November 2, 2019 10:30 AM

There have been rumors for years that Crispin Glover got a settlement from Spielberg because he had some incriminating information. He wrote an essay about it once that I think you can still find online, you can at least find mentions of it all over the place. That's where his money is rumored to come from.

by Anonymousreply 15November 2, 2019 10:31 AM

Doris Day and Debbie Reynolds weren't bad with money, they were bad with husbands and old-fashioned enough to think the men should deal with the finances.

by Anonymousreply 16November 2, 2019 10:32 AM

Good: Bono and Edge from U2.

Quite bad: AJ McLean from backstreet boys.

by Anonymousreply 17November 2, 2019 10:43 AM

Good: G, no Oscars, but never had to resort to TV money in 2019 to pay the bill.

Bad: M, Oscars (multiple!), but had to crawl back to HBO for "prestige" TV money (which was basically a remake of Desperate Housewives) and share credits with that hapless Nicole Kidman. I smell drug habits.

by Anonymousreply 18November 2, 2019 10:47 AM

There’s an endless number of celebs who either personally mishandled their fortunes or who payed accountants/managers etc. who mishandled their fortunes.

by Anonymousreply 19November 2, 2019 10:51 AM

James Marsden has been flipping beach houses for about 15 years and has apparently done very well for himself.

by Anonymousreply 20November 2, 2019 11:18 AM

When Debbie Reynold's 2nd husband died, she found out she was in debt for millions of dollars. Instead of filing for bankrupcy, she went to work, eventually paying it all back. Then her third husband, again unbeknownst to her, did the same thing. She was forced to sell of her Hollywood Museum pieces, making her richer than she could have imagined, though her dream of having the museum sadly died.

by Anonymousreply 21November 2, 2019 11:43 AM

Good- J Lo.

There is not a penny of her money that she doesn’t know about and if she sees a penny difference her people are held accountable. She is very strict about this after playing

Bad- Selena

She didn’t mismanage her money but that fat cunt did and she never even noticed. It was her father that noticed and then brought it to Selena’s attention.

by Anonymousreply 22November 2, 2019 12:25 PM

That DICK Matt Lauer. He bought a $40 million dollar house in the hamptons a few years ago and now has to sell it, partly for the divorce settlement and partly because he no longer has an income.

by Anonymousreply 23November 2, 2019 12:36 PM

I forgot to mention: Matt Lauer is VERY BAD with money.

by Anonymousreply 24November 2, 2019 12:37 PM

Good: Babs Streisand, Mimi Carey, Diane Ross, Bette Midler, Madonna. They all managed their money very smartly and didn't let anyone swindle them or seize control of their finances.

Horrible: Judy Gargoyle, Flo Ballard, Doris Day, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Lisa Marie Presley

by Anonymousreply 25November 2, 2019 12:38 PM

R18 = A dick. A big, mutilated, dick.

by Anonymousreply 26November 2, 2019 12:43 PM

Also in the very good with money category is Dolly Parton.

by Anonymousreply 27November 2, 2019 12:43 PM

R6 Wow, not a name you'd immediately think of. It's quite surprising, he seems batshit crazy most of the time. Maybe someone bought the semen he sold on his website some time ago lol.

by Anonymousreply 28November 2, 2019 12:44 PM

Good: Melania Trump (probably has socked away millions in completely sure accounts).

Bad: Donald Trump - loses billions and needs to grift non-stop to maintain his self-annointed billionaire identity.

by Anonymousreply 29November 2, 2019 12:45 PM

Good: Sandra Bernhard

Bad: Susan Richardson

by Anonymousreply 30November 2, 2019 1:03 PM

Bad: Susan Olsen

by Anonymousreply 31November 2, 2019 1:04 PM

Bad: Dawn Wells (Mary Anne From Gilligan's Island). Natalie Schafer left most of her estate to Dawn, and she has managed to fritter it all away to the point she put up a go fund me because she was broke.

Bad: Redd Foxx. Lost it all to a combination of bad money management, multiple high dollar divorces, lavish living, and ultimately to the IRS who seized his Las Vegas home and all its contents for back taxes. Redd said an IRS agent even removed a necklace from his neck, an ID bracelet from his wrist, and the money he had in his pockets during the seizure.

by Anonymousreply 32November 2, 2019 1:17 PM

Good: Bob Hope amassed a fortune buying cheap California real estate worth 85 million in the 1980's.

Bad: Justin Beiber for not having a prenup, Hailey Rhode Bieber is going to be sitting pretty once his mental issue make living with him impossible.

by Anonymousreply 33November 2, 2019 1:25 PM

For old-time Hollywood, the previously-mentioned Gene Autry would be tops. He was making money as an entertainer, but not ridiculous money,. However, he invested in land, tv and radio stations and even owned a professional baseball time for a while. He admitted he was a much better business man than signer/actor.

I'd also mention Bob Hope.

For someone around today, I'd Dolly Parton. Elvis wanted to record "I Will Always Love You," but demanded to get a cut of the publishing rights to do so. Dolly wisely declined the offer and later made bank when Whitney Houston covered the tune.

by Anonymousreply 34November 2, 2019 1:27 PM

Can't believe nobody has yet mentioned Lisa Marie Presley as being bad with money. She squandered an estimated $100 million inheritance and is now basically broke. Unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 35November 2, 2019 1:35 PM

The entire Braxton family are tragic with money. Toni, Tamar, all of them.

Good with money? Pete Sampras.

by Anonymousreply 36November 2, 2019 1:41 PM

Good with money: Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld

by Anonymousreply 37November 2, 2019 1:41 PM

Mr. T at one point was making millions a year. Pissed it all away.

by Anonymousreply 38November 2, 2019 1:43 PM

I’d say Tori Amos is pretty good with money. Lots of people know her name but don’t know her music, and they think she’s a relic of the 90s. But she has amassed a $60 million fortune based solely on her musical talents and business savvy, having fought to maintain her own publishing rights since the very beginning of her career.

by Anonymousreply 41November 2, 2019 2:10 PM

Garbo, mentioned upthread: she was notoriously frugal, even if her NYC apartment was lovely, IMHO.

There's a famous quote that between movies and investments, "She'd amassed millions of dollars over her lifetime. And spent $2.98 of it."

I'm not really the biggest fan of her acting, but she was a singularly gorgeous presence onscreen, and more than that, knew when to leave the party.

Class.

Taylor Swift seems to have a good financial head on her shoulders. I'm not a fan of her, so I don't follow her that closely, but it's surprising that someone, who's been in the business since her teenage years has never gone the obvious route of child/teen star crazy with a lavish lifestyleand/ or tons of drugs. Miss America's Sweetheart has always managed to stay fairly sane, maintain her image and make sound career & financial decisions. I really respect that.

by Anonymousreply 45November 2, 2019 2:13 PM

Boris Becker. sooo bad.

Bankrupt. Mansion in Spain rotting and occupied by squatters. Over 50 million pounds in debt, had to sell his trophies.

Invested over 10 million in Nigerian oil industry (LOL)

Bad: Tatum O'Neal?

by Anonymousreply 48November 2, 2019 2:31 PM

How could Susan Richardson be bad with money, when she didn't make that much to begin with?

These child stars pre 90's had it rough. Aside from low wages, they often had to deal with people taking advantage of their money.

by Anonymousreply 49November 2, 2019 2:32 PM

R49 She made enough $$$ to feed her coke habit.

by Anonymousreply 50November 2, 2019 2:40 PM

Very few people raised by parents who were bad money managers grow up to be good with money themselves. That is a responsibility & habit that for most has to be taught from an early age. There are some exceptions, but for the most part fools with money raise fools with money.

by Anonymousreply 51November 2, 2019 2:41 PM

Good: Jerry Mathers. Good investments made him a millionaire in the 60s.

Bad: David Cassidy drugs and partying

by Anonymousreply 52November 2, 2019 2:45 PM

R51 is correct. Case in point:

[quote]Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Her father, Scott Kingsley Swift, was a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch; her mother, Andrea Gardner Swift (née Finlay), was a homemaker who had worked as a mutual fund marketing executive.

Her image is of the (middle-class) girl next door, but she actually grew up very wealthy and, more than, very knowledgeable about finance. And presumably, power.

by Anonymousreply 53November 2, 2019 2:51 PM

"Natalie Schafer left most of her estate to Dawn"

Actually she didn't. She gave her a lump sum of $1million and that was it. Dawn the crazy pothead blew through that shit in just a few years.

Arnold Schwarzenegger supposedly invested well in real estate all over the country. Very smart with investments.

Taylor Swift as someone mentioned, is sandwiched between two financial advisor parents. She’ll be a billionaire by the age of forty.

Is Lisa Marie Presley really broke or is she hiding money she does not want to give to her deadbeat ex-husband?

by Anonymousreply 68November 2, 2019 5:26 PM

Isn't Priscilla reputed to have managed the estate exceptionally well such that Lisa Marie got a huge chunk of money.

Apparently, Elvis was not good with money at all and left the estate a wreck. But, there were assets like his name and likeness that Priscilla parlayed into a small fortune.

Lisa Marie has squandered most of that money and Priscilla has had to sell her own assets to bail her out.

by Anonymousreply 69November 2, 2019 5:37 PM

[quote] Lisa Marie has squandered most of that money and Priscilla has had to sell her own assets to bail her out.

If you believe that I've got some ocean front property in Kansas I'd love to sell you. First of all I don't believe for a second that Lisa Marie has spent all the money. She still owns a sizeable portion of the Graceland property. She's got plenty money coming in. And even if she had to, which she hasn't, Priscilla would never sell her own assets to bail out that drug addict fool daughter. She didn't build Elvis' estate from into the huge fortune it became to be stupid enough to do something like that.

by Anonymousreply 70November 2, 2019 5:41 PM

Very good with money: the delightful Yoko Ono

And let's not forget Merv Griffin. He came off as not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but....

by Anonymousreply 71November 2, 2019 5:46 PM

William Boyd who played Hopalong Cassidy mortgaged everything he owned to buy the rights to the Hopalong character and all the old movies. The studio let it all go for $350,000 since they thought they had little value, but Boyd's timing was perfect because he recut them and syndicated them for television a few years later. The demand was so great they went back into production and shot new episodes, and he became one of the earliest television stars. He was making more than the $350,000 every year off product licensing alone during the 1950's.

Mariah has had a huge payroll for 30 years and flies private all the time. She has had to do quite a few things to bring in cash.

by Anonymousreply 73November 2, 2019 5:50 PM

bad..........tori spelling, she has to be the worst.

as to garbo yes she was very good with money however she had her mishaps. She invested all her money in savings accts in a beverly hills bank and when the depression hit in 1929 the bank went under and all the hard earned money she parked there she lost. This was way way before the fdic came into play.

Shortly after that happened her contract was up for re negotiation. She already had a reputation as a shrewd investor and having saved all her money and the studio was unaware she was broke. Because she kept it quiet, they paid her top dollar on the extended 5 year contract. If MGM knew of her predicament she would have been at their mercy and had to settle for a lot less.

One thing she did, was all the years she was making movies she lived in rentals in LA (houses) and they were furnished and she never spent a nickel on home rehab, furniture etc. She also bought a used packard instead of new. She didnt buy her first house in LA until the 1940 s after she had retired.

SHe grew up grindingly poor in Sweden and when her father became terminally ill rather young in life he ended up in the charity ward at the hospital. That was an extremely embarassing situation for Garbo and right then and there she vowed to get rich.

Jackie Kennedy received a $26 million dollar settlement from her late husband's estate, onassis. She used that $$ to live well the rest of her life. Buying a huge chunk of land on Martha's vineyard, which caroline is now selling for $65 million dollars. It was purchased for just $1.1 million dollars in the late 70s. When Jackie died, her estate was valued at more than $43.7 million dollars, leaving her children set for life.

Lee on the other hand, seemed to have struggled throughout her life with $$ issues. But big sis Jackie cut her a few sizable checks here and there to help keep her in the lap of luxury. I believe there mother Janet also once gave lee a check for $750K dollars to help her stay in the black. I don't think jackie liked lee taking $$ from there mother though.

by Anonymousreply 81November 2, 2019 10:37 PM

Fued made it seem like Joan Crawford had nothing at the end of her life, but that's simply not true. Joan had a beautiful apartment in a beautiful building in NYC. She lived pretty well, even though she always cried poor mouth, which she wasn't. She died I believe with more then $2 million dollars to her name. Pretty big $$ back in 1977. She left her two twin daughters about $80K a peace. And the rest I believe went to charity.

Bette Davis on the other hand, worked like a dog for nearly 60 years taking care of her mother, sister, and supposedly ungrateful daughter BD Hyman. She brought them homes, cars, took care of her grand children, played school tuition, sent them on extravagant luxury vacations etc. All played for by bettes $$ she made in the movies. She never really got to enjoy her wealth, because she was always working to take care of lazy people in her family. I believe she cut her ungrateful daughter out of her will, and left a sizable amount to either her grandson or son.

Bette died in 1989 with an estate valued at about $1 million dollars. So she was definitely comfortable in her later years, which is great. Especially after being in showbiz for 60 years.

Mike Tyson blew straight through $300 million dollars on dumb shit.

Evander holyfield did the same thing. Buy mike tyson seem to be doing pretty good these days.

But blowing $300 million dollars is still fucking insane. If it was invested well, he could've been a billionaire right now.

by Anonymousreply 83November 2, 2019 10:54 PM

Oprah Winfrey huge financial success in her career. And she said she knows exactly what she's worth at any given moment. Always a good thing.

Johnny Carson, another very successful talk show host walked away from the The tonight show job after 30 years of hosting. with $400 million dollars to retire in complete comfort and no worries.

Merv Griffin, like Oprah was another one who was a billionaire talk show host media and business mogul who had huge financial success.

And ofcourse Ellen DeGeneres is another wealthy talk show host who everytime you look up is buying very expensive real estate and flipping it for massive profits.

It sure is good to have a talk show.

by Anonymousreply 85November 2, 2019 11:11 PM

Nicholas Cage pissed through SO much money in SUCH a ridiculous fashion that for a while there I wondered if he had bipolar disorder. When people with bipolar go through manic episodes everything seems like a good idea, including throwing all your money away on stupid shit. And that's why Cage will now make any piece of shit for a paycheck.

There was a rumor that when the IRS went after Cage his old friend Johnny Depp gave him millions, and saved his ass, because Depp was so grateful to Cage for giving him his start in the film business. Which was yet another stupid financial decision on Depp's part.

by Anonymousreply 86November 2, 2019 11:15 PM

And speaking of actors who will make any piece of shit for a paycheck, Robert DeNiro is rumored to need the money. Since he's been earning top dollar for the last forty years, he'd have to be pretty damn bad with money to need any now.

Michael Caine will do anything for a paycheck, but I don't think it's because he needs the money. No, he grew up poor and the fear of being poor again has never left him, he's never been picky and isn't going to start now.

by Anonymousreply 87November 2, 2019 11:18 PM

Kelly Ripa said she's really bad with managing money. And she said she signs all the checks and hands everything off to her husband mark.

She said if it wasn't for mark handling the money she said they wouldn't have anything at all. She said he went to college and hes way smarter then she is. And that she feels much better with him over seeing the family finances. She collects a $25 million dollar salary annually from Live and she's been hosting that show since 2001.

She's very wealthy, they live in a $30 million dollar townhouse on the upper east side of NYC. And they have another beautiful home out in the Hamptons.

So if she bad with money, it's probably best that her husband continues to manage it for them.

Elizabeth Taylor made colossal amounts on perfume. More than all her films combined. Also gifted "important" jewels that appreciated, which is rare.

Rosie O'Donnell lucked out making a Midas fortune on her silly talk show.

People get obscenely rich sometimes for unexpected reasons.

[R81], it's not my place to speak ill of the dead, but I was rather enamoured of Lee due to her fleeting association with The Rolling Stones during their 1972 American Tour. Just the stories, none of them lacivious, amused me, because she always presented good manners when suddenly presented with situations far outside of her normal frame of reference. But her later life seemed to be all bauble, brio and bullshit. I pity her. She never seemed to achieve anything remotely near happiness. A venal, hollow creature.

Jane Fonda has done exceedingly well for herself.

Elton John is notoriously bad with money, but seems to have the Midas touch regarding his music and associated projects, so he actually brings in enough to compensate. If he were only moderately talented he'd probably be dead in a pauper's grave by now.

I think Fonda, like Taylor, made more money from things other than her movies; ie. exercise videos. Joan Rivers was very good with money, never saying no to work and working till her dying day. Bankrupted when her husband suicided she clawed her way back selling jewellery and clothes on QVC etc. and was at the top of her game when she died.

by Anonymousreply 100November 3, 2019 1:16 AM

Cary Grant was a notorious penny pincher (although always seemed to be impeccably dressed) and died very wealthy. Oprah is said to still be somewhat frugal. Heiress Doris Duke was an astute business woman who turned her father's inheritance into billions where her peer Barbara Hutton died almost penniless having flittered through a fortune.

by Anonymousreply 101November 3, 2019 1:20 AM

Gloria Vanderbilt. Forbes had her listed as being worth $200, 000, 000 and Anderson Cooper was set to inherit it. When she died it was revealed she had $1.5 million in the bank, which I find funny. I've never believed Forbes can predict anyone's true wealth.

by Anonymousreply 102November 3, 2019 1:23 AM

D Duke died with fortune intact to the tune of 2.7 billion $

by Anonymousreply 103November 3, 2019 1:24 AM

Well, Doris Duke was not a money manager. She fortunately inherited tobacco wealth and huge stakes in bluechip companies, industries that continued to be very profitable over her lifetime. Also very grand art. Her mother was into money management, though.

r104 yes, but DD could also have flittered it all away too, or sold her fathers' investments. She could be both extravagant and ridiculously frugal.

1930s Film star Norma Shearer, was left very wealthy after her movie producer husband Irving thalberg who was very young and sickly died.

He left her real estate, plenty of cash, and she probably inherited all kinds of film rights which kept on pumping $$ into her estate. Plus she had her own $$ from her time being a massive A list film star in her day.

by Anonymousreply 108November 3, 2019 1:53 AM

Reclusive heiress Huguette Clark whose father was a very successful businessman and senator, inherited a massive fortune from him between $300-$500 million dollars. She maintained her wealth her entire life. Homes all over the east coast and out in California. But never lived in or spent much time in any of them.

She spent something like the last 20 years of her life living in a hospital because that's what she preferred, over living in one of her beautiful properties that her $$ maintained for literally decades while they sat empty.

She died in 2011 at age 104.

I exclaimed, "That's bullshit! She's a billionaire!', and he said, "But it's OPRAH!! It's good for my resume!". Shortly thereafter he wasn't working with her anymore.

Kathy lee Giffords made a massive pile of money hosting live, before she handed it off to Kelly ripa. And she was the face of that cruise company for 20 years and was minted from that.

And then there's the money she made from the Today show, and I'm sure she's well invested too.

by Anonymousreply 112November 3, 2019 2:58 AM

Whoopi goldberg was in a bad place financially before she was hired to be on "The View". She said she was about to have to ask for help. But Barbara Walters came calling and that took care of her $$ problems.

She's always had a lot of real estate etc. But I guess getting divorced and having a shell out money in settlements and spousal support isn't cheap. Not even for celebrities.

I've always liked whoopi and have been a fan from childhood, so I'm glad she's back deep in the money. And that she's been able to start successful business ventures outside of her talk show gig. And that she still gets offers to act in film and tv and Broadway, which she will be doing in summer 2020 in London. I think sister act if I'm not wrong. And her new Stephen king gig on CBS.

by Anonymousreply 113November 3, 2019 3:46 AM

At least half the celebrities rumored to be good with money will be revealed to be pathetic with money, at some later date.

Such as Kelly Ripa. Every female celebrity whose husband is accused of pissing away her fortune on side pieces and bad investments during the divorce, had said earlier that he was a brilliant businessman and that she was so glad to let him handle everything.

by Anonymousreply 114November 3, 2019 3:47 AM

Howard Hughes inherited a really successful business and wealth from his father, And turned that fortune into a multi billion dollar empire.

He invested in aviation technology and brought a Hollywood movie studio, RKO studios I believe. He also brought hotels owned a lot of other real estate and he was an eccentric recluse too.

By the time he died in the 1970s, he was sitting on a nearby $2.5 billion dollar fortune that eventually went to various cousins and a family charity if I'm not mistaken.

by Anonymousreply 115November 3, 2019 3:53 AM

R114 Kelly ripa doesn't strike me as a dumb woman. I sure she keeps an eye on the money too. After all, it's her money that's funding there life of luxury and comfort. I know mark is an actor too. But he's not pulling in the kind of money kelly does from that sweet lucrative talk show job she has.

I'm sure she knows exactly whats in the bank and what's going out. She'd be a fool not to know.

What about Charlie Sheen. Was the highest paid actor on TV. Spent it all on hookers, drugs, booze. No one will hire him now. Went to court to have his alimony and child support reduced. Saying he only has a couple of million left.

by Anonymousreply 121November 3, 2019 5:06 AM

Charlie sheen is fucking crazy and irresponsible. No one is surprised by his money issues, I'm not.

Once again, the wrong people always end up with large sums of money.

Always it seems.

by Anonymousreply 122November 3, 2019 5:13 AM

Jay Leno is such a vapid, repulsive, and unethical person. Net worth of at least $400 million, and

[quote]Leno owns approximately 286 vehicles (169 cars and 117 motorbikes). He also has a website and a TV program called Jay Leno's Garage, which contains video clips and photos of his car collection in detail, as well as other vehicles of interest to him. Leno's Garage Manager is Bernard Juchli.[95] Among his collection are two Doble steam cars, a sedan and a roadster that were owned by Howard Hughes, the fifth Duesenberg Model X known to survive, and one of nine remaining 1963 Chrysler Turbine Cars. The collection also includes three antique electric cars — the 1925 Baker Motor Vehicle is his wife Mavis' favorite car.

you are wildly inaccurate of your portrayal of doris dukes wealth. She inherited the bulk of her fathers money and it was managed by money managers her entire life. Her father had already branched out into other areas other than tobacco as he knew there would evetually be a backlash due to the health factor of cigarettes. He knew this back in the early 1900s. He started Duke energy. SO you know that had a happy ending financially. Doris knew so little about finance that she would change advisors almost yearly so nobody ever even knew how little she knew. What propelled her along was at the time her father died, estate tax rate was not high. The biggest factor was she was an ONLY child which meant the money didnt get split up. The snowballing money became so huge that it just grew massive. In the 1960s when a new financial advisor took over he found she had 72 million dollars in her checking acct! She was the second largest holder of treasuries in the world and she was richer than the queen of England. The other factor that helped Doris was her father had already purchased the 2 main properties she would reside in off and on for the rest of her life, one in new jersey and the other in New Port RI.......... so she didnt spend fortunes on mansions all over world. She did build shangrai la in Hawaii and it cost alot but she had built in to the structure pricelss oriental antiquities so that at the tiime of the inventory of her possesions after she died, probablly hundreds of millions of dollars was saved in estate taxes as the value of the house was just its market value in general not the contents that was built into the house.

THe other factor that showed she wasnt any genius is she made her drunken idiot of a butler that eventually probably on purpose made sure she had a fatal overdos the executor of her will.

So to be generous to Doris she was a mixture of brillance and stupidity when it came to money. There is no denying the estate was worth hundreds of times more than when she originally took charge but that reflects the time value of money over 65 years ot so that she survived her father .

What Doris

DL fave/enemy Kathy Griffin lives very well for a stand up comic who never really had a big series (like Seinfeld).

Frankie Muniz (from Malcom in the Middle) worked on that show for 7 years as a kid and never has to work again a day in his life. Might have been his parents who were the smart ones, but someone knew what they were doing.

Regarding Grace Slick, she owns several properties in the Bay Area, and that's about as fruitful of a real estate portfolio as you can get. Her wealth is also partly why she hasn't been on the nostalgia touring circuit that many of her contemporaries do to make a living. Her daughter China Kantner also doesn't work, as typical of many children of SF Bay Area people who own properties that generate income. I know a couple of people in their 20-30s who went to college but had never worked because their parents own rental properties that generate income, and they know they'd take over after the parents die.

by Anonymousreply 143November 3, 2019 6:19 PM

R141 I remember that. Whoopi is very money conscious I think, because of her situation before getting The View job.

So I really don't blame her for being the way she is. Having it all then almost losing it all is scary.

Even Paris Hilton buys lottery tickets if you could believe that. And she's a Hilton.

Kirstie alley has to be good with money. I don't know if she still does, but at one point she had a lot of real estate from California to the midwest and in the northeast.

She also has her main residence up for sale right now. Its a huge house in Los angels, and she haven't really done anything significant as of late. I was wondering how she affords that house. She did reality show that was filmed primarily on her property and looking at the size of it, I didn't know she had that kind of money at her disposal.

I don't know if her money is running low now, but that house is up for sale. That's been her main house for nearly 20 years.

Maybe she wants to downsize or something. Also being a scientologist is expensive too, so maybe that eating away at her finances as well.

"DL fave/enemy Kathy Griffin lives very well for a stand up comic who never really had a big series (like Seinfeld). "

A lot of celebrities live beyond their means, because they either think that looking rich and successful will help their careers, or they're just damn fools who blow all their money on lifestyle.

And BTW that's the finances of most "reality TV stars" right there, idiots who blow every cent they ever earned or can borrow on looking rich, because impressing people with their lifestyle is all they live for. Every Real Housewife and their ilk will be bankrupt soon enough, they all live beyond their means.

by Anonymousreply 148November 3, 2019 6:35 PM

I believe Kathy Griffin can actually afford her lifestyle through. She doesn't strike me as someone who is stupid with money.

She's very tight money wise from what I've always heard about her. And she paid cash for her home, which she's always bragging about.

I think kathy is trying to empress anyone, she's way smarter than that in my opinion of her.

Michael Jackson managed to run through a monumental fortune, and do so well before he died. In his last years, he lived on the charity of some Arab bazillionaire, brought his whole family to the middle east to live off of this guy, and when he died he was about to go out and sing for his supper for the first time in years. Well, lip-synch, anyway.

Where did the money go? Yes, Jackson spent a lot and lived very well, but he didn't live as high as some. Personally, I think a huge chunk of his fortune went to paying off the families of cute little boys.

by Anonymousreply 153November 3, 2019 6:47 PM

Kris jenner is definitely good with money. She and Bruce were broke when they first got together. He was millions in the hole and she didn't really get anything from Robert Kardashian because she cheated on him and that was a factor in her not really getting much in the divorce settlement, if anything at all.

Kris became Bruce's manager and started booking him for speaking engagements and $$ started to roll in, debts got paid off and they were able to buy a nice house in a upper middle class neighborhood in los angels.

Then years later, they forced themselves into the spotlight and now there worth hundreds of millions of dollars, even billions if you believe what's reported in the media.

NBA star Ray Allen and crazy Russell Westbrook are both GOOD with money. They watch every dime and sign all the checks. Ray Allen did not even have an agent and negotiated his own contracts directly - kept that 10% in his pocket. Russell whips out the checkbook to pay all this bills. He will not be getting ripped off by his accountant. Someone I know was a shady NBA agent and ripped off his client. It was a bad situation but dude was fucking dumb as hell. He had like 10 baby mamas and they all got the same deal a nice car and apartment and child support. His dumb wife stayed with him. The baby mamas were strippers. Again a bad situation. Its like dude get a vasectomy and keep your money!

[quote]These child stars pre 90's had it rough. Aside from low wages, they often had to deal with people taking advantage of their money.

There were a few child stars pre 90s who luckily had parents who didn't fuck up their finances. Eve Plumb's parents made sure her money was managed well and IIRC, they made some wise real estate investments.

Kandi from the RHOA, is another one who's really good with $$. She's a business woman, she's constantly creating new lucrative business ventures for herself and everything she touches seems to turn to gold.

I don't even think she spends her housewives $$. I believe she said she sign the checks and put them away in a trust or something, and it just collects intrest. She collects a multi million dollar salary from the show and she has a lot of income outside the show as well. Including really successful restaurants and a sex toy line, along with a traveling sex dungeon performance art show which has been a huge financial success.

She's also in the music industry too. So she's been in showbiz for a very long time. And she's still really young, only in her early 40s.

She's very famously frugal and very humble about her wealth. So she's definitely good with money.

There is a BIG difference in what a celebrity thinks is a small salary. You can bet the farm Whoopi is not making minimum wage.

And yet, didn't Ball sell DesiLu for a much smaller amount than what she would have made if she held on to it. She got none of the Star Trek spinoff money, for instance.

R192 She sold Desilu for $17 million in 1967, due to inflation, that is the equivalent of $440,899,292.93 in today's money. I think she was pretty shrewd.

So he made at least one good deal in his life. Even though that money is for him and his family.

by Anonymousreply 195November 4, 2019 6:03 PM

Former tennis player Monica Sales is known to be very shrewd and sensible when it comes to money. Sports journalists used to comment on how she was aware of her winnings, the tax she had to pay and how much of her earnings she'd get to keep even when she was 15 or 16.

Her rival Steffi Graf was the opposite. She let her crooked dad manage all her finances and he ended up serving time in prison for tax evasion.

R193 You used a bad inflation calculator. $17 million in 1967 is the equivalent of about $130 million now.

Still a nice chunk of change. And weirdly, Lucille Ball was notoriously cheap. The furniture in her home was left over from the set of "Here's Lucy."

The flashy and flaunting has really ruined society in ways that is just plain sad.

Rosie O Donnell said they don't make much over at The View, and that she was surprised when she learned what Joy was making given how long Joy had been doing the show by that point.

Most of the women who do the show wind up doing side ventures as well. Joy was hosting her own show on Headline News as well as standup gigs, sometimes joint ones with Whoopi. Sherri did her own sitcom for Lifetime, Elizabeth had a fashion collection for HSN. Maybe the show pays better now, but when Walters was in control it didn't seem to be overly generous.

by Anonymousreply 206November 4, 2019 9:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 214November 5, 2019 12:19 AM

R213 The reason she wasn't as wealthy as she should have been when she died is due to inflation. She sold Desilu for a large amount of money, but then the value of money fell. She was 56, when she sold Desilu, I think she just wanted to cash out and not deal with running a studio.

by Anonymousreply 215November 5, 2019 12:24 AM

John Travolta always seems good with money. I remember an interview he gave in the 90's about his 'lean years'. He said he was advised that the piece of advice he always followed was to always have $1 million in the bank. He always owned his own plane, kept his home in the northeast, and could afford all those massages.

by Anonymousreply 216November 5, 2019 1:15 AM

What were Travolta's lean years? Those Look Who's Talking Movies went into the 1990s, no? And Pulp Fiction was circa 94/95.

by Anonymousreply 217November 5, 2019 1:17 AM

Diana Ross left Motown in 1981 with only $200k in the bank. RCA paid her $20 million to defect. By 1988 she had turned that sum into $75 million. She's sitting pretty with $250 million today, and NO - Arne Naess was never wealthier than her. Mama knew how to make that bank!

by Anonymousreply 218November 5, 2019 1:19 AM

R217, [italic]Look Who's Talking[/italic] was a comeback for Travolta. After [italic]Staying Alive[/italic], his career went from white hot to stone cold.

He's talked about getting advice early on while on a plane He was told to invest his acting fees and live off the investment income. When his career stalled, he had plenty of money to live on and play with. I think that's' when he went to flight school to learn to fly jets.

by Anonymousreply 219November 5, 2019 1:35 AM

I've always imagined Diana Ross in the $400 million dollar neighborhood.

She tours non stop. She's had concerts in my city twice in the last 3/4 years. And I'm in the south. She also has some pretty sweet real estate too.

If your in showbiz, it's always a good idea to make sure you have business ventures stabilized outside of Hollywood.

That's one business with a lot of uncertainty. You don't want to depend on an industry like entertainment solely for your income.

What if you get black balled for a while? Hollywood is like a club, they'll let you in make you rich and famous and put you up on the greatest pedal stull. Then black ball you for whatever reason.

Hollywood is basically the high school of life. Their the ultimate cool kids in life. Everyone want's in, but not everyone is welcome.

Always a good thing to have lucrative business ventures lined up outside of showbiz. All the smart ones know this.

They have to be making something over at The View, Joy has two beautiful upscale homes. And whoopi has had a lot of real estate for decades.

But whoopi had all of that back when she was truly a movie star. She had real estate all over the country. NYC, Vermont, like 3-5 properties in California alone. Nice peices of real estate too. She recently listed one of her California homes for $8.8 million dollars and sold it for exactly what she asked for. So whoopi is flushed with cash.

She had a loft in Manhattan, but sold that to buy her current home in New Jersey. Whoopi is definitely in a better financial position now. The View definitely helped.

"No mention of Jay Z being a billionaire? "

He is VERY high on my list of celebrities I suspect of not being worth nearly as much as they claim. Some people think it's great publicity to claim they're billionaires or close, and some of them are living like Real Housewives - spending everything they have to look rich.

But I don't suspect Jay Z of being poor as much as I suspect the Kardashians. I think they're all a false front; rich compared to me, but nowhere near as rich as they claim.

by Anonymousreply 226November 5, 2019 3:40 AM

R226 yeah, let's be sceptical of black wealth, black success, and black excellence.

Never fails. No one really does this with the smoke and mirror family known as the Kardashians/Jenners.

I wonder how Jay z and Beyonce purchased a nearly $100 million dollar home in Beverly Hills then? In I'm assuming ca$h.

Good: Raquel Welch, Bing Crosby, Harold Lloyd, Julia Louis Dreyfuss (who might be the richest woman in show business.)

Bad: MC Hammer, Toni Braxton

by Anonymousreply 239November 5, 2019 1:32 PM

Most of Dreyfuss' money would be as an heiress to her dad's fortune though, right? I don't doubt that she's wisely invested her own earnings, and she's been the most consistently successful of the Seinfeld actors, but on her own she'd be somewhere in the 9 figures range, not a billionaire.

by Anonymousreply 240November 5, 2019 2:04 PM

Oprah would be the wealthiest person in showbiz. Because her fortune actually came from it. Entertainment, media, and business specifically.

Dreyfuss on the other hand, would've been given a huge boost from her wealthy father.

Oprah started with nothing, which makes her completely self made.

Rupert Murdoch, as much as I don't care for him because of fox news and all of his right wing media outlets. He turned his fathers news paper into a much larger empire then it already was. The candy company is fabulous business too.

Good: Rihanna. Got screwed over by an accountant in her early 20s and once she destroyed the bastard she became airtight about her fortune. She’ll be a billionaire by 40 just like Taylor Swift.

by Anonymousreply 247November 5, 2019 6:10 PM

Alot of the people mentioned here don't really count in my mind as "good with money" but the same person in the same scenario who ends up broke would definitely be "bad with money."

If someone continues to have millions thrown at them for one skill (singing/acting) like for instance, Elton John, then it's real easy to say (and a bit disingenuous) that "He's successful" because a new multimillion dollar paycheck is just around the corner. But if Michael Jackson runs through millions, then he definitely is "Bad with money."

I'd rather hear about the people like Natalie Schafer, who never made the big bucks, but shrewdly used them to amass a fortune over the course of their lives by investing well.

by Anonymousreply 250November 5, 2019 6:51 PM

Clooney definitely owns part of that company, he traveled all over to promote it. That was very smart of him to have that side biz.

Clooney is also a great friend, he once invited all his close friends ( i think around 10 people) to dinner and gave them all 1 million dollar each (in duffel bags if I remember correctly). Randy Gerber didn't want to accept it but Clooney said, if Randy doesn't accept it then nobody gets the money so Randy accepted it and donated it to charity.

Rihanna is making big bucks with her makeup line. Her Billionaire bf is helping her out in business matters. She definitely picked the right man.

R251 He's got zilch to do with Fenty. That is LVMH euros and expertise, Hunty.

by Anonymousreply 252November 5, 2019 7:03 PM

It’s true The View pays them pennies. It’s why they all have so many side gigs. Why is Sunny launching a tacky show on the ID channel and a podcast? She’s been working there for half a decade and you’d think would surely get better options.

Whoopi was in such a bad financial place post-Hollywood Squares and pre-The View (she must have burned through all that movie money during her peak years), and Hollywood has NEVER given her offers worthy of her talent. She saw the writing on the wall re: her creative career and so she stays there for the (according to Mo’Nique) unworthy salary because it’s a safe gig. Even though she hates it, sleepwalks through reading the teleprompter, and lights up when doing other work (like the Stephen King miniseries, or Sister Act on stage… stuff she’s genuinely passionate about - performing).

Note: none of the hosts are POOR, but they don’t make anywhere near what some of their other Daytime contemporaries make (even Wendy Williams). Probably something to do with the licensing deal, since the show is under the ‘ABC News’ division which could prevent them from getting a better cut of the profits.

by Anonymousreply 253November 5, 2019 8:20 PM

Mary J Blige is bad with money and not just because she let her no good (now ex) husband handle her business and finances. Even before him, she was getting ripped off by Diddy and co, got basically zero percent of the publishing, and is self-confessed to know nothing about money.

For someone who has sold as many records as she has, has toured as much as she has, and has done as many TV / film appearances as she has (and performed at the Grammys that many times), she’s spent her whole career without much to show for it. She is very prolific too in terms of output.

Only now in the last 3 or so years has she started to really make that money from doing network TV, and Netflix shows and movies.

by Anonymousreply 254November 5, 2019 8:22 PM

Master P is insanely good with money. A real entrepreneur who started selling CDs out of his car and is now worth half a billion at least. Shrewd, good with business.

by Anonymousreply 255November 5, 2019 8:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 257November 5, 2019 8:24 PM

Raven Symone. All her child acting cheques were put into a fund for her when she came of age. She was a producer of her own show (and is now again on Raven’s Home), owned a stake in all her music/movies/Disney money, gets royalties and percentages of the gross…. I remember an article where she was aware of how much she was being taxed even at 13-14. Her parents really did well with her too and she never spent lavishly (she bought her first “mini mansion” as she calls it, about 5 years ago when she went to art school).

by Anonymousreply 258November 5, 2019 8:24 PM

Mary was a whore (she said so herself) and all her money probably went to drugs and men who used her.

by Anonymousreply 259November 5, 2019 8:26 PM

I don't really believe that post about MJB. If singers weren't also their own main songwriter, the money for a recording artist has always been in concert work. If Mary pissed that money away with no good types handling the money, then that's on her. It's not like MJB only had brief commercial success.

by Anonymousreply 260November 5, 2019 8:26 PM

"Swanson’s salary only continued to rise. At one point, she was making — and spending — $20,000 a week, which is a cool quarter million in today-dollars. These were the days of the gold bathtub, black marble bathroom, four personal secretaries, and an “Atlantic City boardwalk chair in which a manservant wheeled her around the [studio] lot.” Girl spent $10,000 a year ($125,000-ish in today-dollars) on LINGERIE. For a 300-person dinner party, she gave favors of solid-gold compacts (for women) and solid-gold cigarette cases (for men). Fur coats, diamonds, hundreds of dresses and shoes and stockings in a serious Clueless/Alicia-Silverstone overdose of sartorial luxury."

How can someone spend 250k per *WEEK*? Even making that much back then is ludicrous. The early silent film days really were the wild west as far as money/glamour/debauchery go in Hollywood.

Music stars make a lot more money than actors. They can make a fortune from touring and festival appearances. The only actors who make that kind of money are the top stars in the Marvel movies and TV stars with big syndication deals, like Jennifer Aniston, Jim Parsons and Sophia Vergara. Reese Witherspoon also makes a fortune in TV.

Madonna, Rihanna, Taylor, Ariana, Barbra and Beyonce make the kind of money these actors can only dream about.

by Anonymousreply 262November 5, 2019 8:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 263November 5, 2019 8:33 PM

[quote] Probably something to do with the licensing deal, since the show is under the ‘ABC News’ division which could prevent them from getting a better cut of the profits.

Before 2014, they were part of ABC Daytime not ABC News. I suspect though that they get paid less simply because they are a network show and not syndicated. It is the same reason, I suspect Pat Sajak, Vanna White, and Alex Trebek make more than Drew Carey or Wayne Brady.

by Anonymousreply 264November 5, 2019 9:30 PM

"The View" was actually supposed to go into syndication about a decade ago. Barbara Walters talked about it, she said if it did it would mean a fortune for each panelist on the show.

I dont know what happened, but they would've been very wealthy today. It definitely would've meant way more $$ for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 265November 6, 2019 12:11 AM

R262 I dont know about there being way more money in music then there is in acting. I've always heard musicians say, they love getting to act in film and television because there's so much more money in Hollywood then there is in the music industry.

I've heard a lot of rappers say it and I remember hearing queen Latifah say it too. Musicians are always talking about how much bigger the movie and tv paychecks are, then anything in music.

I've always seen Hollywood as the place where the real $$ is.

Everyone seems to want to either get into the movie business or land a hit TV series. It all leads to $$.

Hard to tell. Those celeb net worth sites aren't totally accurate and some sites claim she has a net worth of 10 million. I would say she's ok financially. She doesn't have kids and I don't think she would be the type to fuck up with money.

There are probably some C and D list actors who while not mega wealthy are probably financially secure because they manage money well . I'm curious why Donny and Marie Osmond's net worth is only $18-20 mil each. I know D & M each have a small private jet.

By contrast, Penn and Teller each have a reported net worth of $180 mil, EACH! Th do not have a private plane, but fly first class everywhere.

All 4 have been working hard in the biz for 4+ decades. Why the difference?

Good: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope Bad: Desi Arnaz (sold his share of Desilu to Lucy, gambled, whored, drank prodigiously, ended up living in a modest beach house in Del Mar when he had been the biggest TV producer and one of the biggest TV stars of the 50s). David O. Selznick was probably ok with money (enough to still live in a mansion and throw lavish parties) but he gambled a lot and overspent on his independent movies to the point that he was out of the movie business fairly young.

Those online net worth listings aren't always accurate. But, I wouldn't be surprised if Donny and Marie have both donated a lot of money to the Mormon church over the years.

Also, did Donny and Marie write a lot of their songs? If they didn't that would mean less income.

A lot of celebrities take care of their families too. Still isn't a reason to be bad with $$, but it is a reality for some. They make it, and they don't want to leave anyone behind.

Very understandable.

r18, what about that TV show Damages. I did enjoy the first 3 seasons though.

Whoopi claims she’s broke because she’s been divorced three times. Every divorce cut her wealth in half. I can believe it. She seems to have married deadbeats, and nowadays it seems her entire family is on the payroll. Nobody works except for her. Her daughter seems to be the most useless person in creation.

Whoopi should be making good $$ now. Ever since she landed The View, that should've put her back in the black. Plus she has a lot of outside opportunities and projects generates income from too. Usually people who are always crying poor mouth, are the ones who loaded and financially secure.

I know plenty of people like that.

R281 That's been the case with some celebs and pro athletes. Sometimes the family members or relatives mooch way too much and it ends fucking up the celeb or pro athlete's finances at some point. The documentary Broke about pro athletes who ended up broke detailed accounts from athletes who were drained financially by friends and family.

Some lotto winners have ended up broke due to family members and friends. I recall some documentary years back about the lottery and a lawyer who represented a lotto winner talked about how the client had to take out restraining orders on several relatives.

When you become a celebrity with a lucrative career, you have to know how to dole out $$. If I was a celebrity making Oprah level $$$. I would at least put my siblings in a upper middle class lifestyle, and provide everyone with a generous trust. That would constantly replenished on their birthdays and right before Christmas.

It's just how you set things up. You have to first have the finances to be able to do it, then you have to be financially organized so you don't go broke. It all really comes down to the type of $$ you make as a celebrity, also how you choose to dole out the $$.

If your financially literate and competent with $$$. You'll be fine taking care of your close family. Especially with a good wealth management team behind you. That's all it really comes down to is financial competence.

R284: that article at r277 says Marie Osmond just joined The View, so I guess Marie should be able to grow her net worth more now, compared to her Vegas show of the past 11 years.

Maybe she can catch up to Donny as google says she has slightly less than him (he= $20 mil. She= $18 mil)

Tut-tut on Donny & Marie. I thought Mormons were supposed to be really good with money.

[quote]Mormons are slightly more likely to be in a middle income bracket than the general population; 38% of Mormons report earning between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, compared with 30% among the population overall in this income category. Mormons are slightly less likely than the general public to be in the lowest income bracket (26% earn $30,000 or less per year compared with 31% among the general public), but they are about as likely to make $100,000 or more annually as the rest of the population (16% and 18%, respectively). This places Mormons roughly in the middle of other religious traditions on the socioeconomic spectrum. Jews, Hindus and Buddhists tend to have more education and higher incomes than Mormons, while Jehovah’s Witnesses and members of historically black Protestant churches and evangelical Protestant churches fall on the opposite end of the continuum.

Donny and Marie each have a shit-ton of adult children, plus 20 siblings who haven't seen a big payday since the seventies, and probably thousands of nieces and nephews and cousins because holy fuck those Osmonds are prolific!

Plus a church that expects its members to fork over. If those two have anything left at their ages, it's because they've fought off the ravening hordes.
