Jeff Goldblum - "My Gay Brother Went Through Conversion Therapy"

Jeff Goldblum has spoken about how his late brother was subjected to conversion therapy by his father “in order to fix” his homosexuality.

In an interview with The Times Magazine, the Jurassic Park star says that his father had a “traditional masculine sense of himself” and was often cruel to Goldblum’s gay brother Lee who passed away in 2000. The father went so far as to keep his son’s sexuality a secret from the rest of the family according to Goldblum.

“He didn’t tell the rest of us,” Goldblum said. “Sent him to a therapist in order to ‘fix him’. It was all secret. That’s not so nourishing.”

“My dad was, without knowing why, conspicuously cruel to [Lee] at times.”

According to the actor Lee faced “troubles of one kind or another” including “physical ailments, [being] overweight, pharmaceuticals abuse and self-medication issues.”

Goldblum says that Lee struggled with employment, having studied at medical school and joined the army before becoming a taxi driver. Then, “for the last couple of decades of his life,” Lee moved back in with their parents.

I wonder if Lee Goldblum found the datalounge before he left this cruel world?

And he lived with his awful parents. He'd have fit right in.

Why didn't he live in the guest house on his movie star brother's property?

by Anonymousreply 2October 31, 2019 6:00 PM

R2 maybe because he was mentally ill. You’re not responsible for your mentally ill siblings. Sad story though.

I find it hard to believe Jeff knew nothing. A big secret. Yeah right. Jeff is not to blame and was not in a position to stop it but don’t act like you knew nothing.

Being gay is a mental illness again? I thought most people were over that nonsense.

Goldblum is in his sixties, R5, I assume his brother was around the same age. If the poor kid grew up in the fifties and sixties, then he was unfortunate enough to be young when homosexuality was considered a mental illness, and psychiatrists were thought to hold the keys to the fucking universe. It'd have been considered normal for a middle-class family to send their gay son to a psychiatrist, and assume a "cure" was possible. Because the psychiatrists all claimed they could "cure" us!

Remember, the Gay Rights movement didn't even become public until the end of the 1960s.

Yes R6, I'm well aware of basic, recent history.

Goldblum's brother moved back in with Goldblum's parents for the last 20 years of his life, something like that? So Goldblum has been a very rich guy for more than 30 years. Surely he could have rescued his gay brother from his gay conversion parents at some point during those years?

One would think something could have been managed.

by Anonymousreply 7October 31, 2019 7:03 PM

R7 it’s not his job to rescue his brother who at that stage was full on drug addicted and mentally ill.

I’d volunteer to help Jeff through Straight Conversion Therapy

Yes, and their own father was a doctor who probably thought he providing the proper "medical" treatment for his poor son.

It's nice that R8 is so up on all the details of the last 20 years of Jeff Goldblum's brother's life.

by Anonymousreply 11October 31, 2019 7:20 PM

Ah. Jeff Goldblum is definitely NOT his actual brother's keeper.

Don't look for any help there, bro, nothing's coming.
