I’m looking for an alternative to Ambien for occasional sleeplessness. Ambien only works for me for 5-6 hours and I’m wondering if anything else works for a good 8 hours.
My alternative is NyQuil or something similar OTC and I wake up too groggy.

Get convicted for treason Mr. Trump and with any luck you'll get the death penalty. Your issues with getting enough sleep will be no more. Perhaps you can confess to more the process along quickly? (Wishful thinking.)

Im on temazapam 15mg and I only get 5 hrs or so of uninterrupted sleep on it, but I do fall asleep pretty quickly and part of my problem is I sleep with my dog and 5 hrs of dead sleep at one time is about all he is good for so he usually wakes me up. Id suggest maybe asking for a higher doseage mg of temazapam mg wise and that may do the trick.

Try pot gummies

I have trouble with sleeping for 8 hours too. Often I only get 3 hours a night. If you take sleeping pills for more than a couple of weeks, they'll eventually stop working and you have to take more and more. It is also impossible to fall asleep naturally, if you take them too long. Someone here mentioned Melatonin. This helps you fall asleep more easily, but I'm usually awake after 3 hours and can't get back to sleep. I've bought some CBD capsules and hope they will help. Lots of people report it helps them sleep through the night. Too early for me to tell, but maybe worth a try for you too.

Try Natrol Gummies: Melatoin 10mg. The serving size is 2 gummies, but I take 3 so it ends up being 15mg which is the perfect dosage to comfortably but DEFINITELY knock a person out.

^Melatonin only helps most people fall asleep faster. It is not helpful if you have trouble sleeping through the night. Melatonin is also a natural hormone and such a high dosage is not really healthy. Doctors suggest you should not take more than 1mg/day.

It is really, really bad to chronically use something with diphenhydramine (Zzzquil, Simply Sleep), doxylamine (Unisom), or benzos (Ativan, Klonopin, temazepam) because it increases your risk of dementia.
Melatonin is better because it works and is something your body makes anyway. If you must go the prescription route, the better options are Trazodone and Remeron, although the latter makes you gain weight.
And don't use something like Nyquil or Tylenol PM unless you have some other issues, like a cold. You'll kill your liver if you're also taking acetaminophen products during the day.

Another vote for gummies.

The best sleep (and dreams) I’ve ever had was on a low dose of Seroquel. It’s an atypical antipsychotic prescribed at 400-800 milligrams for bipolar mania and schizophrenia; however, it’s pretty commonly prescribed “off label” at 25 milligrams (lowest available dose) for insomnia and sleep disorders. Many years ago when I was having inexplicable panic attacks, in a constant state of high anxiety and very depressed, my shrink asked me to try it for sleep. I told her that I sleep a lot and that I didn’t need a sleep aid and asked whether she thought I was bipolar or schizophrenic. She said no, but that she thought based on my symptoms that even though I sleep long hours, I probably was not getting “high quality sleep.” I relented and tried it and not only was the sleep addictively good, but when I took it I felt better all day during waking hours—much more alert, calm and energetic.

Ranitidine, being banned now, it always give me the best 10-hour sleep.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 30, 2019 12:08 PM |
Don't EVER take Seroquel for insomnia or sleeping disorders. It is almost impossible to get your natural sleep pattern back after you take it for a couple of months/weeks/years. You'll also gain lots of weight and get the WORST withdrawal symptoms if you ever try stop using it. If a doctor ever suggests Seroquel for insomnia, immediately find another doctor.

R12 It worked very well for me. I discontinued it twice. The first time was an absolute nightmare of itching and sleeplessness and the second time wasn’t. I have no trouble at all sleeping without it now, and I sleep a lot better now than I did before I ever took it, but there are probably medical reasons for that.

I agree with Melatonin, which I only found out about from DL just a couple weeks ago. One 10 mg tablet puts me out like a light within 20 minutes. And unlike Benadryl, I don't wake up hung over the next morning.

Trazodone is amazing. Start on a low dose like 25 mg and raise it if it’s not enough. I take 100 mg almost every night as I have massive anxiety issues and insomnia. Benzos are great for occasional sleeplessness but the dependency risk is real as is Ambien’s. I have now used trazodone for 10 years and don’t have to use it some nights. It always gives me a solid 6-8 hours and there is no addictive quality to it. Most Drs are more than happy to prescribe it because it is an old medication that is tried and true as well as safe.

SomnaPure works like a dream for me. Melatonin gives me unpleasant dreams, for some reason.

Put Vicks Vapor Rub on your eyelids. That will keep your eyes shut.

I've been taking Ambien for years without withdrawal symptoms when on occasion I do not take it. Sure, it is harder to fall asleep without it now, but other than, there are no adverse withdrawal symptoms. If I feel sleepy and not wired or stressed, I can easily sleep without Ambien. I find it to be entirely reliable and safe. I wake up fresh and ready to go.
However, if you have bad insomnia, say no sleep for 2+days, then stay the hell off the road and do not endanger other drivers.
P.s. I always wanted to try Calmes Forté. Anybody try it?

Remeron worked really well for me when I was suffering insomnia as a symptom of depression, and it didn't cause any problems when I weaned myself off it after my sleep patterns returned to normal.
I don't recall Trazadone being quite as effective, but there were zero side effects and as others say it's a well-established prescription sleep aid.

Old people who can't sleep enough are not getting enough exercise.
If you can't sleep straight through that means sleep anemia.

Try youtube hypnosis for sleep. Plug in the earphones and off you go....

I currently take 15.5mg of Stilnox (Zolpidem tartrate) slow release. I am trying to cut them back but its hard. I was on 29mg a few months ago so I have made an improvement. I love sleeping pills - they should be sold a supermarkets. I hate having to go to the doctors every month to get a prescription. I might just start ordering on-line.

Unisom with doxylamine succinate has worked for me for years, I take the 25mg tablets and try to use just a half tablet if possible. I take a tablet 2 hrs before sleep, and as I get into bed I also have a 2mg melatonin tablet that dissolves. I use some sleep sounds on my phone when it's time to sleep as well, set for an hour before it fades out.
There's also a melatonin with l-theanine supplement you can take (whole pill, not a lozenge) which I have varying luck with but it's usually pretty good.

Trazodone gave me nightmares and didn't help me sleep longer, though it did help me get to sleep. But I really didn't like it one bit.

Another vote for Melatonin.
All I need is 1 mg about 5 minutes before going to bed.

Lunesta, (Eszopiclone) 3 mg, PRN. I take half the tablet, so 1.5 mg, hence the prescription lasts twice as long. I fall asleep fast in 5-10 minutes and get 6-7 hours of refreshing sleep with none of the postprandial "hangover" one is warned about, nor any "sleep-driving," sleep-walking," or "was there a bear in my refrigerator last night?" behaviors.
I know it's habit-forming but it's better than insomnia.

[quote]Unisom with doxylamine succinate has worked for me for years,
I just found the wonders of Unisom this past winter. I don’t have trouble getting to sleep, I have trouble staying asleep. In February I took Robitussin DM for a cold and had the best sleep I’ve had in years. It had an antihistamine I had never heard of - doxylamine succinate. Looked it up and found out it was sold as aUnisom! Well, no wonder I slept so good! I try to only take it when I have sinus trouble, but when I do I sleep like a baby.

[quote] Try pot gummies
If you’re in a state where you can get these, get 'em. 5mg (or half of a 10mg) is all it takes for me. I eat one about an hour before bedtime and Zzzzzzzzzz. And I’m refreshed and totally awake the next morning.

Tylenol PM. I used to take a lot. But that just makes you sleepy the next day.
1/2 tablet works great.

Try finger banging yourself 30 minutes before bedtime
