“Leaving Las Vegas” (1995)

Am I the only one that didn’t care for Nicholas Cage in this? I remember when it came out everyone was all over him! He was huge and he won that Oscar and everyone was praising him! He was just meh to me.

Elisabeth Shue is who I loved in this, and I usually think she’s bland. She was fantastic in this!

I thought it was a TERRIBLE film, and the hale and robust Nicholas Cage was entirely unbelievable. I hated it, but tons of people bought the whole thing! Yuck. Nope.

Me too - but she has the kind of teeth Americans love and admire

Depressing. Reminded me too much of stepfather. I never got the big deal about it either.

She often looks pretty vacant.

Awful

At the time, I was glad the Sarandon and Cage--now I wish Shue and Penn had won--I think they were the powerhouses of their respective films (and Babe should have won best Picture!)

by Anonymousreply 6October 23, 2019 3:24 AM

I still to this day haven’t seen Babe or its Sequel.

Shue should have won.

Didn’t she admit years ago she fucked someone for a role early in her career? I know it wasn’t for this, must have been one of her 80s flicks, but I always wondered who and for which.

who can forget Mariska Hargitay as a prostitute?

I hate both actors - but loved the movie. Such a raw view of sever alcoholism - and without a heavy hand of judgment. Shut as a prostatic was ridiculous - way too All American nice girl. She tried to act tough but you never through for a second she was a girl from the streets turning tricks.

But Cage was good in this. I just saw him in his first Fil Valley Girl for the first time - he had charisma and a unique look. The only two movies where I get why he is big. Leaving Las Vegas was a perfect fit. You can’t understand why he does it - yet it seems logical that he does because of the way he handles it, Depressing but a good movie,

^ Shue as a prostitute

Great flick

Remember a critic saying Shue looked more like the captain of the women’s field hockey team than a hooker, which was so true.

by Anonymousreply 13October 23, 2019 4:26 PM

R13- that is soooo perfect. Lol

by Anonymousreply 14October 23, 2019 6:12 PM

I used to find Shue very hot

by Anonymousreply 15October 25, 2019 12:10 AM

I loved the scene where Nic is by the pool dropping glasses and such and Laurie Metcalf comes over to give him a bad time and he says 'hey sexy' or some such. Laurie is wearing a Ross Dress For Less tropical outfit and is such a cunty landlady.

by Anonymousreply 16October 25, 2019 2:33 AM

Does Elizabeth still act? I can’t believe she named her kids Tennis and O’Pinto.

by Anonymousreply 17October 25, 2019 2:38 AM

Elizabeth was great as the mom in the gay hustler film "Mysterious Skin" awhile back.

by Anonymousreply 18October 25, 2019 2:43 AM

She was in that Bruce Willis movie last year.

And Battle of the Sexes the year before.

by Anonymousreply 19October 25, 2019 2:45 AM

I thought Shue was just as deserving. In fact, in many ways, she has to carry the film because Cage is in a drunken stupor for half the film.

And she's the heart of the film. Her love for Cage is sad yet moving.

The rape scene and aftermath is devastating.

by Anonymousreply 20October 25, 2019 2:47 AM

Is it weird that I sometimes mix up Schue with Lea Thompson? They look very similar to me.

by Anonymousreply 21October 25, 2019 2:57 AM

Weren’t they both in Back to the Future?

by Anonymousreply 22October 25, 2019 2:58 AM

It tried way too hard to be devastating. And Sting wailing on the soundtrack really killed it for me.
