What is your favorite Peanuts/Charlie Brown movie or special?

Which movie or TV special is your favorite of Charlie Brown and the gang?

And did you like The Peanuts Movie? I felt they captured the essence of the characters well!

They’re giving The Great Pumpkin right now and I’m emotional with memories of watching this growing up!

My favorite is A Charlie Brown Christmas, and LOVE “Linus & Lucy”. I listen to it every holiday season!

Fun Fact- my Grandma could never watch Charlie Brown scenes when Lucy was a bitch to him. She would cry at how mean Lucy was and hated her guts! Lol. We would laugh at her.

R3 she’s always hated mean spirited people and cruelty. She could never see that, it always upset her.

My sister (the older of the two) was a bitch growing up and if my Grandma saw that she would become infuriated with her. She hates mean people.

She would despise Datalounge lol.

The picture quality is really bad.

For me, it's a toss up between "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" They're both classics. There was a showing of the Great Pumpkin tonight. I watched it yet again, even though several minutes are edited out, to make room for the fucking commercials. Some parts of it never cease to make me laugh; Lucy throwing Snoopy out of the room when he collapses on her lap giggling, Charlie Brown commenting again and again "I got a rock", Sally lambasting Linus: "You blockhead!", Charlie Brown's lament: "I went trick or treating and all I got was a bag full of rocks", :Linus's rant at the end as Charlie Brown wearily listens; "I'll see the Great Pumpkin! I'll see the Great Pumpkin!" And of course the Vince Guaraldi music is so wonderful.

I hated the Thanksgiving special. It prominently featured Peppermint Patty, who was rude, ugly and dumb. She invites herself and the whole gang over to Charlie Brown's for Thanksgiving. Poor Charlie Brown does his best to provide a meal for the unexpected guests but Peppermint Patty is enraged that he didn't provide them all with a feast: "where's the turkey?! WHERE'S THE PUMPKIN PIE?!" Peppermint Patty was truly loathsome.

I saw some new Charlie Brown shit and they have professional voiceover actors doing them. They’re too perfect and don’t sound like real kids. And when they get real kids to do the voices, they over-emote and sound too cutesy.

The old ones sounded like actual kids, and I could relate to that when I was one.

My favorite is un petit garçon appelé Charlie Brown (A Boy Named Charlie Brown)

Seeing the film in French and understanding where it comes from in that culture opened up my head to understanding philosophy.

Charlie Brown is the ultimate optimiste. Never will that red head girl ever be his, Lucy will always fetch up that football before he can kick it, the kite never will fly.... But CB never stops trying nor gives up hope. Of course they do say difinition of insanity is doing same thing over and over again but expecting different outcomes. CB doesn't see things that way; his hope springs eternal that one day things will go his way.

Despite the bullying, things never going well in his life, CB never gives up or lets things get him down much or for long.

It's so fucking sad. I remember watching it for the first time in my dorm room as a sophomore and bawling my eyes out.

I never saw it again until it showed up on Amazon video. I bought it for $2 and it made me cry all over again. Just a beautiful installment in the Peanuts series.

by Anonymousreply 53October 23, 2019 7:25 PM

"Only the old/original ones. What I love are the voices."

That was part of their charm, the voices done by actual children. After "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was completed and shown to tv executives they disliked everything about it. They disliked that it didn't have a laugh track. They disliked the "religious theme." They disliked Vince Guaraldi's jazz score. And they disliked that the voices were done by children instead of adult actors. They thought the special would be a complete flop. What idiots.

Snoopy Come Home - very sad

by Anonymousreply 63October 25, 2019 12:13 AM

"Snoopy Come Home" was actually pretty disturbing. It features a psychotic character named Clara who...well, here's how one viewer described it:

Next, we are introduced to a future serial killer. As Snoopy and Woodstock are making their journey, they encounter a seemingly harmless little girl. The soon find, however, she is not harmless at all. Before you can say Lizzie Borden, Snoopy has a thick rope tied around his neck, and Woodstock is shoved into a cage. This diabolical girl likes her victims clean, so she proceeds to almost drown poor Snoopy in the tub. Her next step is to dress her victim, and play tea party where she purposely spills tea then blames Snoopy. She puts Snoopy across her knee and spanks him. This is truly twisted stuff. Snoopy makes a break for it and attempts to call for help. Unfortunately, she wrenches the phone from his paw and drags him to the local vet. Luckily, Snoopy escapes the vet’s office and rushes back to the crime scene to help Woodstock get away. Nail-biting action ensues as the psychopath chases Snoopy and Woodstock through the house of horrors. In the end, Snoopy and Woodstock barely escape with their lives. I find it interesting psycho-girl keeps calling to her mother about her new pets, but there is no reply. My theory is the mother has already been dispatched PSYCHO-style by this miniature serial killer in the making.

by Anonymousreply 64October 25, 2019 1:27 AM

YES! Clara fucking INFURIATED me as a child. I wanted to beat her up.

by Anonymousreply 65October 25, 2019 1:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 66October 25, 2019 2:39 AM

I actually felt a bit sorry for crazy Clara. She was clearly desperately lonely to latch onto Snoopy like that.

by Anonymousreply 67October 26, 2019 2:29 PM

I didn't think Clara was "desperately lonely." To me she did seem like a psycho. What a weird movie "Snoopy Come Home!" was. It featured the psychotic Clara and also showed the whole Peanuts gang weeping and wailing at Snoopy's departure. I thought the movie was somewhat overly intense for kids.

by Anonymousreply 68October 26, 2019 8:28 PM

It definitely was intense and made you aware of the lack of adults in their world.

r44 Peter Robbins, the original voice of Charlie Brown

On January 20, 2013, Robbins was arrested by San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies at San Ysidro, California Homeland Security's Port of Entry, while re-entering the United States, and charged with "four felony counts of making a threat to cause death or great bodily injury and one felony count of stalking." The four counts involve four victims, including a San Diego Police sergeant, whom Robbins reportedly threatened with bodily harm during a January 13, 2013 incident. He was held on $550,000 bond. On May 8, 2013, he was sentenced to a year in jail for threatening his former girlfriend and stalking her plastic surgeon, but he was allowed to log time in treatment instead. After release, he was sent to a residential drug treatment center.

In 2015, Robbins was arrested for multiple probation violations, including drinking alcohol and failing to complete mandatory domestic violence classes. On June 5, 2015, he was ordered to undergo a mental health exam after an outburst during a court proceeding in San Diego.

On December 7, 2015, Robbins was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison as part of a plea agreement for sending threatening letters to a manager and his wife of the mobile home park in which he lived in Oceanside, California. Robbins has stated at previous hearings that he suffers from bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia. Robbins was incarcerated at the California Institution for Men in Chino, California. He was released in 2019 "after serving 80 percent" of his sentence.

Christmas, Great Pumpkin, Bon Voyage

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving = the first Friendsgiving.

I wonder if kids today who watch these classics ever think it's weird how there are no adults hovering over them and doing everything with them.

I probably didn't appreciate the Christmas episode until I was an older kid, maybe around 11 or 12, once some of the Christmas magic had worn off, but now it perfectly captures everything I feel at Christmas.

by Anonymousreply 84November 1, 2019 4:48 PM

A Charlie Brown Christmas is my favorite. The Great Pumpkin was good, but I agree with R72 that the Red Baron segments dragged the cartoon down. I could never figure out why they threw that in the show. I guess to have Snoopy show up at the pumpkin patch.

" I could never figure out why they threw that in the show. I guess to have Snoopy show up at the pumpkin patch."

I thought the Red Baron sequence was for atmosphere. Snoopy traveling through war town country side (of course it's all his imagination) in the dark of night...it was meant to be spooky. And it did set up a reason for him ending up in the pumpkin patch; his wanderings took him there. It made sense to me.

Today I watched a clip of the closing scene with Charlie Brown and Linus . It never fails to make me laugh hearing Charlie Brown say "I don't understand it...I went trick or treating and all I got was a bag full of rocks."

A Charlie Brown Christmas.

It was really ballsy to present Christmas time as glum with sad down-beat children's voices. And to use jazz in the score. It was all just so unexpected.

I was 10 and remember all the kids talking about it the next day. It made quite an impact.

Peanuts was ruined when Snoopy became human like.

by Anonymousreply 91November 26, 2019 11:25 PM

Supposedly "A Charlie Brown Christmas" helped to destroy the aluminum Christmas tree industry. Too bad; I thought those silver aluminum Christmas trees were cool.

by Anonymousreply 92November 27, 2019 2:25 AM

I over-analyzed everything as a child and the thing that bothered me most about the Thanksgiving special was when Woodstock turned into a cannibal at the end. He was a bird eating a bird...couldn't get past it.

by Anonymousreply 93November 27, 2019 2:51 PM

Lots of bird eat other birds, R93. Eagles eat smaller birds, for example. Woodstock isn't committing cannibalism unless he's eating a bird of his own species. Humans eat other mammals (pigs, cows, sheep) all the time.

I'll see that and raise you What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown? It's a sequel to Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (which was a theatrical release and is probably my absolute favorite), where the gang ends up visiting WWI and WWII battle sites and learning about D-Day and the Battle of Ypres. It ends with with Linus reciting "In Flanders Field," which has an effect on me that should frankly be embarrassing, but it isn't and I don't care.

by Anonymousreply 95November 30, 2019 6:36 PM

I'm a grown man who can barely watch the Christmas one. It just kills me. So sad, cold, and dark -- and beautiful.

My library used to play "Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown" all the time. I could still summon the music in my head. I remember there were tons of horrific river rapids, and no parents in sight, again. I think the lack of parental supervision contributed to Peanuts' success. Even if not particularly realistic, it showed children that the world could be theirs.

by Anonymousreply 96November 30, 2019 6:59 PM

R95 ... fun story re: What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown

When I was a little kid, my parents would tape the Peanuts specials whenever they aired and I’d watch them over and over. “What Have We Learned” came out in ‘83, so I was about 4 years old, VERY precocious, and somehow completely on my own memorized the entire phrase Marcie says in French when she reads the sign at the memorial. I walked into the kitchen and started reciting the French and mother almost fell over wondering how her 4 year old randomly learned a new language.

It was a huge deal. It was terrible with so much filler. I still love the 60s stuff but that's it. I hated Woodstock, Peppermint Patty and Marcie. They had none of the charm of the original characters.

You Really Need to Scoop Snoopy's Poop, Charlie Brown

by Anonymousreply 108December 27, 2019 11:40 PM

I felt the original comic was brilliant well into the 70s, with well-defined characters exploring the concepts of existentialist theory and crisis of faith while remaining plausibly children in terms of motivation. In the 80s the material went downhill as it tried too hard to ape popular trends. It's Friday The Thirteenth, Charlie Brown, was a possible low point, with Marcie cast as a deranged killer, although It's A Serious Woody Allen Film, Charlie Brown wasn't much better.

by Anonymousreply 109December 28, 2019 12:07 AM

Having little kids re-enact a Woody Allen film? Seriously? Geez, what was Sparky thinking? Talk about things that don't age well in hindsight. You might as well have had Little Orphan Annie do a tribute to the movie [italic]Chinatown[/italic]!

Here's some really shitty news:

For the first time in nearly six decades, the Charlie Brown holiday specials will not be broadcast on television. Instead, the Peanuts are heading to Apple TV+.

Each year, local stations announce the much-anticipated airdates of the iconic Charlie Brown Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. The trifecta of animated specials has aired on ABC for the past 20 years, according to Vulture. Before that, they aired on CBS.

Families can still continue the tradition of watching Charlie Brown around the holidays — but it will be a bit different this year.

Apple TV+ announced this week it has made a deal with Peanuts Worldwide and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to stream the specials, including "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965), "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (1973) and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (1966).

Apple TV+ will also be getting new originals featuring the "Peanuts" characters.

In a statement to CBS News, a rep for Apple confirmed that the specials will only be available on Apple TV+. Each will be available for free for a short period of time. Then, "Peanuts" fans will have to pay to watch Charlie Brown, Snoopy and their friends.

The Halloween special, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," was expected to begin streaming globally on Apple TV+ on October 19, and will be available for free from October 30 until November 1, Apple said in its press release.

"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" will be available on November 18, and free to watch from November 25 until November 27.

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" will be available for free from December 11 until December 13.

[quote]Instead, the Peanuts are heading to Apple TV+.

The characters are not called "the Peanuts."
