What is/was your mom's favorite movie?

My mom's is "Twice in a Lifetime" with Gene Hackman and Ann-Margret. I've never seen it myself though (which is probably for the best, because it sounds like a real fraufest).

Olivier’s “Henry V.”

Terms of Endearment

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2019 2:10 AM

Wuthering Heights. My mother loved Lawrence Olivier.

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2019 2:13 AM

I don't think it was her favorite (I'd lose respect for her if it was), but she loved the "theme from a Summer Place" and did see the movie.

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2019 2:19 AM

Cumsloppy Buttholes.

by Anonymousreply 5October 22, 2019 2:21 AM

Imitation Of Life. She breaks down whenever she talks about the funeral scene.

by Anonymousreply 6October 22, 2019 2:25 AM

Most likely Student Prince or Great Caruso, she had a think for a Mario Lanza.

Both The Godfather and Part II.

by Anonymousreply 12October 22, 2019 3:27 AM

The original King Kong. It was the first movie she took me to see when it was re-released in theaters many years later. I was 3.

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2019 3:29 AM

Sound of Music. She was Catholic.

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2019 3:30 AM

Reds

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2019 3:31 AM

after my parents divorced, my mom was in a terrible funk for months, years.....i always remember her saying that siting through The Goodbye Girl ('77 with richard dreyfuss) was the first time she was able o get out of herself and laugh, and briefly return to the person she had been. the power of movies.

The 10 Commandments

by Anonymousreply 18October 22, 2019 4:10 AM

Cabaret. My mom loved Liza! She brought our entire family to see it when it came out. I was ten.

by Anonymousreply 19October 22, 2019 4:51 AM

The Sound of Music

by Anonymousreply 20October 22, 2019 5:01 AM

Twice in a Lifetime is actually a really good film, OP. Nothing frau-y about it.

The acting by Gene Hackman, Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margaret and Amy Madigan (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress) is excellent.

by Anonymousreply 21October 22, 2019 6:02 AM

Steel magnolias. I don't I watch that damn movie.

by Anonymousreply 22October 22, 2019 6:04 AM

The Sound of Music. Her father was from Austria.

by Anonymousreply 23October 22, 2019 6:05 AM

My Mom's favorite was 'Foul Play'.

Gone With the Wind.

by Anonymousreply 26October 22, 2019 6:25 AM

The only things I remember about 'Foul Play' was a fake Pope and Barry Manilow singing through the opening credits.

by Anonymousreply 27October 22, 2019 6:43 AM

I'm glad my mumsy isn't as stereotypically frauish as yours were because one of her favorite films is Incendies.

by Anonymousreply 28October 22, 2019 7:07 AM

Casablanca and the Olivier Pride and Predjudice

by Anonymousreply 29October 22, 2019 9:15 AM

'Somewhere In Time" and my Mom so wanted to visit Mackinac Island where it was filmed but she did get to meet Christopher Reeve and tell him how much she loved it. He was so gracious to her. I think he was very proud of it too.

The Godfather Part II and, of all things, The Deer Hunter. She was a tough broad, my mom.

The Graduate.

After my mother got a VCR, I asked her what was her favorite movie. She said "Now, Voyager". She was a fan of a lot of movies from the 1940s.

It always surprises me when Italians say their favorite movie(s) is the Godfather series when these movies actually demonstrate (fictitiously) the dark side of an Italian heritage.

by Anonymousreply 33October 22, 2019 10:36 AM

Mildred Pierce. She loved the scene where Vida and Mildred have it out after Vida gets the settlement check from the unfortunate, young rich boy.

by Anonymousreply 34October 22, 2019 11:01 AM

Anything with Rock Hudson or Marlon Brando. Anything.

by Anonymousreply 35October 22, 2019 12:05 PM

Most of these are awful. I mean "The Goodbye Girl" is basically a sitcom dragged out to feature length. She could have saved time and random;y picked a sitcom then in reruns and had the same laughs in less time.

by Anonymousreply 36October 22, 2019 12:09 PM

Another one for Sound of Music.

by Anonymousreply 37October 22, 2019 12:25 PM

My mom had a thing for The Enchanted Cottage, even though it was before her time.

by Anonymousreply 38October 22, 2019 12:25 PM

I don't know if this was her favorite, but I know she really enjoyed Doris Day in Pillow Talk.

My mom's also a big fan of The Sound of Music and got me and my sister hooked on that film too. We even visited Salzburg and took one of those annoying TSOM bus tours that take you around the filming locations.

by Anonymousreply 40October 22, 2019 12:33 PM

Who the fuck knows?

Never asked, never told.

by Anonymousreply 41October 22, 2019 12:36 PM

I wouldn't say Godfather was fictionalized exactly but it was romanticized otherwise it would hardly be anyone's favorite movie.

by Anonymousreply 42October 22, 2019 12:37 PM

[quote]The only things I remember about 'Foul Play' was a fake Pope and Barry Manilow singing through the opening credits.

Because they were the only memorable things about it.

Dudley Moore trying to be funny.

She watches so many I have no idea. She does have a thing for Bette Davis though. Loving her and hating her depending on the film.

by Anonymousreply 45October 22, 2019 12:51 PM

A Man and a Woman

She played the movie soundtrack incessantly during my youth.

Either The Best years of our Lives or Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. She had eclectic tastes.

by Anonymousreply 48October 22, 2019 1:19 PM

Jaws.

She has a thing for sharks. I told her I will scatter her ashes amongst the great whites so she can spend eternity with them. She loved it.

Maybe this article will help.

Key quote: "The film [italic]The Godfather[/italic] dealt with the mafia, but ultimately it was about the family."
