Canada 2019 Election Results

Are they any yet? Is there a Dixville Notch equivalent, i.e., some early-voting town that has already completed its voting? Where in Canada are people being prevented from voting? Who has tales of LONG lines that mean whatever you want it to mean?

And what's your prediction?

by Anonymousreply 323October 29, 2019 1:45 AM

It would be nice to include some more detail about the Canadian federal election, for the casual observer.

[quote]After a 40-day campaign, millions of Canadians will cast ballots today in the country's 43rd general election. Polls open first at 7 a.m. ET in NL and close at 10 p.m. ET in B.C.

What’s going on?

by Anonymousreply 2October 21, 2019 4:44 PM

Votes are being cast, that's what going on.

by Anonymousreply 3October 21, 2019 4:46 PM

OP, no there is no Dixville Notch. First results will be out at 7 Eastern, 6 Central, when the polls close in Newfoundland and Labrador. Voter suppression isn't a thing in Canada. You can use your Health Care card as ID to vote. There should be no long lines as you only vote for MP, nothing else. They don't have long ballots like we do down here. And it will be a Liberal Minority Government.

CSPAN 2 will simulcast CBC tonight at 8 central, 9 eastern for US viewers. And watch worldwide on YouTube.

Unhackable and recountable as well. Voting machines -- produced by private companies -- are bonkers.

Global News morning anchor ripped Scheer a new one earlier today:

If their party losses which leader goes tonight?

by Anonymousreply 8October 21, 2019 8:08 PM

What's a loss tonight though? In a minority situation, they'll all be jockeying to form government (though Trudeau gets first crack.)

The convention used to be that if a government is defeated and replaced by a majority, the leader went that night or very very quickly thereafter.

Considering his messiah complex, I don't know what Justin will do.

If the Liberals get the most seats I think Scheer will go after the knives come out, eighteen months to two years. He's damaged, no matter how you slice it (except if he wins... so unlikely.)

The NDP guy gets to stay. New lease on life after his campaign performance.

If the Liberals get a minority Trudeau will stay and again, watching the polls, make a decision to stay or go in eighteen months or so. Reduced to minority says it was about him, not the party. Realistically, the Liberals have proven reasonably good at governing... he's the one kept landing in hot water. If eighteen months from now the polls say he is redeemed, he gets to stay. If not, he should do the decent thing and stand down.

I don't predict a coalition. The Liberals hate the idea. They don't want the NDP at the table because that increases pressure on a merger and there's two wings in the Liberal party and one is centre enough not to want to let the NDP loose internally.

by Anonymousreply 9October 21, 2019 8:15 PM

R8: Trudeau obviously. Scheer will hang on out of spite no matter what. Maxine is a party of one so whatever. The Bloc will gain seats guaranteed, so Blanchet is set. Singh, it may depend how many seats the NDP win, if the losses in Quebec are not made up for elsewhere, then he might be in trouble. And May? I honestly don't know. How many more elections is she gonna contest as leader?

by Anonymousreply 10October 21, 2019 8:16 PM

R8–Given that May is usually the only one from her party who’s an MP....

As long as the Liberals are the largest party in the Commons, I think Trudeau will hang on...

Scheer needs to go (unless he pulls off a win). Maybe Caroline Mulroney can run for the federalconservite leadership (she’s toast in ONTARIO

R12, yes, Atlantic Canada, like Maine in the U.S., comes in early because of the Eastern time zone.

by Anonymousreply 14October 21, 2019 9:13 PM

[quote]And May? I honestly don't know. How many more elections is she gonna contest as leader?

May said a few months ago that this will be her last election, although I suppose it's possible she could change her mind.

The Greens had a lot of momentum earlier this year, but the final poll numbers yesterday showed that they lost momentum.

So it may just be Elizabeth May and Paul Manly (the guy who picked up an NDP seat in a byelection earlier this year). And maybe one extra seat, for a total of 3.

by Anonymousreply 15October 21, 2019 9:15 PM

Seems very, very likely that it's going to be a Lib minority propped up by Greens. Scheer is the least inspiring politician ever to smarm, the Con supporters will stay home and drink their cares away.

by Anonymousreply 19October 21, 2019 9:24 PM

R19: You mean the NDP. The Greens will have at most, AT MOST, 5 seats. And that's being optimistic. Unless you think the Liberals will be that close to 169....

by Anonymousreply 20October 21, 2019 9:26 PM

Sigh. The Conservatives have learned well from our Republicans.

One of the ridings to watch in the Atlantic results will be *Fredericton*.

Currently held by Liberal MP Matt DeCourcey. Being targeted by both the Cons & the Greens. If Matt DeCourcey hangs on, it could be a good night for the Libs. If not, it could be a good night for the Cons.

Btw, on a Canadian Gossip thread, a DLer in the know said that Matt DeCourcey is gay, but not out yet.

by Anonymousreply 25October 21, 2019 10:20 PM

Not Dixville Notch, but my friend in Mount Pearl, NL voted NDP. I doubt Jagmeet Singh will be PM, but it's statistically possible, if improbable.

I'd like to see the Green Party gain at least a third seat in BC -- it came close in Victoria in 2015, but I'll be voting for another party in another riding.

by Anonymousreply 26October 21, 2019 10:24 PM

[quote] [St John's South -- Mount Pearl] That's the riding held by openly-gay Liberal minister Seamus O'Reagan, yes?

Yes, I got my friend's riding wrong, she's in St. John's East, but I know her address is west of St. John's. She still voted NDP; Jack Harris.

The Canadians where I live, six miles north of the US, didn't just all join social media in the last twelve months. The CONs and their global helpmeets think 19.8 thousand trollbots won't be recognized and called out, but the truth is Canadians are malevolently aware of the United States, most are disgusted and appalled by Trump, and feel they're better than the "oh I just won't vote, what's the worst that can happen/hey wow look at all this fraud and grift and scandal and treason we are simply at a loss how all that could happen" abstaining US contingent from November 2016.

My octogenarian neighbour, her son, and we will head to the polling station shortly. It's raining hard, and we're walking, because we want to.

All the panelists are going to cum in unison the second the results come in, correct?

by Anonymousreply 37October 21, 2019 10:41 PM

R34, it means that Peter Mackay, who was one of PM Harper's cabinet ministers, is thinking of challenging Andrew Scheer for the leadership of the Conservative Party if he finishes 2nd tonight.

But early days yet.

by Anonymousreply 38October 21, 2019 10:41 PM

Nanos - Globe - CTV daily tracking poll for Oct 20 gave the Conservatives a slight edge....

Conservatives: 32.5 Liberals: 31.7 NDP: 20.8

What is interesting is that all three were up, vs. Oct. 19... Green Party down... but the NDP was up most: 2%.

Assuming it is correct, that could be bad news for the Liberals and would seem to assure minority government.

by Anonymousreply 70October 22, 2019 12:13 AM

Liberals won ALL of the Atlantic Canada seats last time so I’d say they’re in trouble

by Anonymousreply 71October 22, 2019 12:14 AM

From the Globe:

Liberals have won six seats in Newfoundland and Labrador. Early returns show a number of competitive races between the Liberals and Conservatives in the rest of Atlantic Canada.

Polls are still open in most of Canada. In Ontario and Quebec, polls close at 9:30 p.m. ET; in Manitoba, polls close at 8:30 p.m. CT (9:30 p.m. ET); in Alberta and Saskatchewan, polls close at 7:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. ET); and in B.C., polls close at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET).

At dissolution, the Liberals held 177 seats, the Conservatives held 95 seats, the NDP held 39 seats, the Bloc Québécois held 10 seats, the Greens had 2 seats, the People’s Party had 1 seat, the CCF had 1 seat, and there were 8 independents. There were five more vacant seats in the 338-seat House of Commons.

by Anonymousreply 72October 22, 2019 12:15 AM

R71, that was an historical anomaly. It wasn't expected to happen again.

If the Libs get 20-22 seats in Atlantic this year, that would be considered good. Not a Majority, but a chance of a Minority.

by Anonymousreply 73October 22, 2019 12:17 AM

Is easternmost Canada basically rural/conservative?

by Anonymousreply 74October 22, 2019 12:17 AM

It's sparsely populated & rural in many areas, yes, R74.

But it is actually more liberal than the rural areas in Ontario & the West.

by Anonymousreply 75October 22, 2019 12:19 AM

sounds New England'ish then

by Anonymousreply 76October 22, 2019 12:21 AM

Sorry r73 are you talking about a governing minority or an American minority, aka irrelevant. Sorry, asking from the south. I did hit my WhatsApp to encourage one of Canadian friends, under 25 years old to vote Liberal. He knew NOTHING about what's going on with the race when we spoke two weeks ago. by Anonymousreply 81October 22, 2019 12:41 AM

Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine is the farthest riding in Quebec, so it reports on the Atlantic time zone.

Often a predictor of the way Quebec votes.

by Anonymousreply 82October 22, 2019 12:44 AM

Wow... the Greens might have a seat in NB.

by Anonymousreply 83October 22, 2019 12:45 AM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 84October 22, 2019 12:47 AM

R38 Yes that seat comes at the expense of Liberal incumbent Matt DeCourcey who is allegedly quietly gay (but not out officially) and jokingly referred to as a poor man's Justin Trudeau.

by Anonymousreply 85October 22, 2019 12:48 AM

Yes, R85.

On the "Canadian Gossip" thread, we had someone (you?) who told us Matt is gay, but not officially out.

by Anonymousreply 86October 22, 2019 12:49 AM

There is no "Prime Minister race", r84. The party winning the 170 seats (minimum) forms the government.

by Anonymousreply 87October 22, 2019 12:51 AM

R84– There is no Prime Minister race. Think of the PM like the Speaker of the House of Representatives— whichever party has the most seats gets its leader to be PM

by Anonymousreply 88October 22, 2019 12:54 AM

Matt DeCourcey is cute!

by Anonymousreply 89October 22, 2019 12:55 AM

Yes, R289. I feel bad for Matt that his seat got targeted by the Greens.

Any other Liberal seat in the Atlantic and he would probably be winning right now.

Greens hanging on to the lead in Fredericton so far. Not good for Matt. But better than having a Con.

by Anonymousreply 95October 22, 2019 1:12 AM

I would hope so, R111. 2011 was a disaster for them.

by Anonymousreply 114October 22, 2019 1:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 115October 22, 2019 1:53 AM

Conservatives are ahead in the popular vote in Ontario, but Liberals have a seat lead.

by Anonymousreply 116October 22, 2019 1:56 AM

But overall, doesn't it become insurmountable for the other side to overcome the liberal lead in votes?

by Anonymousreply 117October 22, 2019 1:58 AM

CBC is strongly hinting they believe it will be a Liberal Majority.

by Anonymousreply 118October 22, 2019 1:58 AM

CBC still contending the Liberals could pull off a majority.

by Anonymousreply 119October 22, 2019 1:58 AM

R119 Not happening! The Liberals have peaked they will not get many seats beyond Manitoba.

by Anonymousreply 120October 22, 2019 2:00 AM

LIBS now Leading & elected in 100 seats

by Anonymousreply 121October 22, 2019 2:01 AM

But the heartland is very conservative and those polls just closed.

by Anonymousreply 122October 22, 2019 2:01 AM

R78: What the hell are you babbling about?

The whole country is now closed and reporting. We should know this in the next 2 hours.

by Anonymousreply 123October 22, 2019 2:02 AM

The basis for CBC's contention is if the Ls hold all the remaining seats outstanding that they already hold.

by Anonymousreply 124October 22, 2019 2:03 AM

Let's not get too excited. The Liberals have peaked they will not win many (if any) seats beyond Manitoba. AL & SK are going to be solid blue. BC is up in the air.

by Anonymousreply 125October 22, 2019 2:04 AM

Both major parties have really shitty leaders this time. I hope the Liberals win but I hope they get rid of airhead Trudeau soon.

52 more seats needed for a #Liberal majority!!

#CanadaElection2019

by Anonymousreply 134October 22, 2019 2:08 AM

CTV officially calls it: Liberal Minority.

by Anonymousreply 135October 22, 2019 2:09 AM

R125: Saskatchewan has 14 seats, Alberta 30 something. If the Liberals did well in Ontario and Quebec, then that's not enough to block them. BC will be the wildcard.

It is not over as the Conservatives and Bloc could form a coalition if they have more seats Trudeau

So this is NOT over

R142: Preparing to start screaming that TRUDEAU IS FINISHED, IT'S OVER for 2023 or sooner. The fucking idiot.

by Anonymousreply 144October 22, 2019 2:14 AM

Looks like a Liberal minority government.

They've lost 20 seats. CBC said they could afford to lose 16.

by Anonymousreply 145October 22, 2019 2:15 AM

Damn, r143, I was about to start celebrating.

by Anonymousreply 146October 22, 2019 2:16 AM

R146: The Bloc and Cons are not forming a coalition. The person you're responding to is a stupid troll who I already had banned. You can relax R146.

by Anonymousreply 147October 22, 2019 2:18 AM

Bad show for the NDP. Bit surprised by that. Strategic voting, I guess.

What's going to happen to Scheer after this election when the Cons lose? I live in a Conservative riding (unfortunately) and use the ABC voting strategy. I would never vote conservative anyway, but he gives me goosebumps.

I'm so tired of populist politics. When will this shit go away?

by Anonymousreply 156October 22, 2019 2:22 AM

R150: No, they were talking about 2 Liberal cabinet minsters are trailing. 38 seats are still outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 157October 22, 2019 2:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 159October 22, 2019 2:23 AM

Justin Trudeau way ahead in his own Montreal riding.

by Anonymousreply 160October 22, 2019 2:23 AM

I've been an NDP voter for a number of years and I considered voting strategically for Liberals. But, I'm in Trinity/Spadina riding so, having mulled over whether to do it or not, I didn't have to do that but I understand fellow NDP voters who did. This elections is way too critical not do that - anything to stop that slimy Trump wannabe and his cohorts.

by Anonymousreply 161October 22, 2019 2:25 AM

DL's Scheer poll-troll is busy packing his bags and moving south to Trumplandia. Scheer and his family will probably follow him shortly.

by Anonymousreply 162October 22, 2019 2:27 AM

John Baird will be trolling Toronto bathhouses particularly hard in the next couple of weeks - fuck the pain away, as Peaches said!

by Anonymousreply 163October 22, 2019 2:28 AM

R161 I voted NDP because my riding is an NDP stronghold, but I'm very happy with results.

by Anonymousreply 164October 22, 2019 2:28 AM

I think Liberals will end with 160 seats give or take.

by Anonymousreply 165October 22, 2019 2:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 166October 22, 2019 2:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 167October 22, 2019 2:33 AM

Yes, R166.

BC is starting to come in,

by Anonymousreply 168October 22, 2019 2:33 AM

Liberal MP Dr. Hedy Fry, who represents Vancouver's gay community, will be likely re-elected to another term.

by Anonymousreply 169October 22, 2019 2:34 AM

CBC-TV is framing this Liberal minority win as a loss because the Liberal lost seats, while the Conservatives GAINED seats

by Anonymousreply 170October 22, 2019 2:35 AM

This is going to be a mess.... Trudeau will need both the NDP and the Block

by Anonymousreply 171October 22, 2019 2:35 AM

R171 both the NDP and the Bloc are both BROKE and have no money to fight another election. So they are not going to want to defeat the government anytime too soon.

by Anonymousreply 172October 22, 2019 2:37 AM

So...will Scheer resign?

by Anonymousreply 173October 22, 2019 2:37 AM

CBC is also saying Singh should resign too.

by Anonymousreply 174October 22, 2019 2:38 AM

The Bloc and the NDP will prop up the Liberal minority for a while because no one will want to get the backlash blame for a second election.

by Anonymousreply 175October 22, 2019 2:38 AM

Scheer will resign.

by Anonymousreply 176October 22, 2019 2:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 179October 22, 2019 2:40 AM

Also, the small parties will be broke. They don't have the cash to fight another national election soon.

by Anonymousreply 180October 22, 2019 2:40 AM

Scheer won't resign tonight. But he'll be forced to within six months.

by Anonymousreply 181October 22, 2019 2:41 AM

I voted PPC. Sure it's a protest vote, and it felt good.

by Anonymousreply 182October 22, 2019 2:41 AM

The Cons are only 20 seats behind so they could catch upas the largest party

by Anonymousreply 183October 22, 2019 2:42 AM

There is no wedge issue that could destroy an NDP, Bloc, Liberal or Green agreement to keep things going.

I will now put on my veil, light a candle, and consult the crystals. This government will last 2 years, it will be stable, Trudeau will retire and the Liberals will be picking a new leader 2 years from now. There will be some close calls, but this will work just fine. Now for the ritual twink dancing to conclude the divination.

by Anonymousreply 184October 22, 2019 2:43 AM

by Anonymousreply 187October 22, 2019 2:46 AM

R151 Canada was not seriously in danger of that - not because we are so enlightened that we would never fall for it, but because Andrew Scheer has zero charisma. The next guy that can talk a good game will be a better indicator of the nation’s temperature.

by Anonymousreply 188October 22, 2019 2:46 AM

r184 why do people keep saying the JT will retire? He just won right so the country can't be that opposed to him. Is there a term limit?

Singh will probably not resign as leader because, unlike Scheer, he didn't really have a chance at becoming PM. He's a new MP who will be given an opportunity by his party to work as as their leader in parliament. They have nothing to gain by choosing a new leader now. Trudeau will probably resign before the next election because he lost the majority, and will be considered past his expiry date as leader by his own party establishment.

by Anonymousreply 213October 22, 2019 3:09 AM

How is it that Scheer got the popular vote, but lost in seat count?

by Anonymousreply 214October 22, 2019 3:09 AM

Conservatives have more total votes than Liberals, but trail by 40 seats. Maybe Parliamentary form of gov't isn't better than an Electoral College.

by Anonymousreply 215October 22, 2019 3:09 AM

The is the election that displays what a garbage outdated electoral system we have in Canada. we need Proportional representation just like Sock Boy promised them lied about.

by Anonymousreply 216October 22, 2019 3:12 AM

R200: The parliamentary system runs on convention. You keep your position as Prime Minster until you cannot command the confidence of the Parliament, i.e. win a vote in Parliament. It's not a set term of office like our Presidency or Governors. But if your party views you as a liability, leaders often go, letting a fresh take over.

by Anonymousreply 217October 22, 2019 3:13 AM

R215 Amen, sister.

by Anonymousreply 218October 22, 2019 3:13 AM

Adam van Koeverden won!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 219October 22, 2019 3:13 AM

They wanted to take down Trudeau soo bad. Canada managing to stave off the right wing trend we see elsewhere is encouraging.

by Anonymousreply 220October 22, 2019 3:15 AM

It just means that Canadian deplorables showed up in larger numbers in their ridings.

by Anonymousreply 221October 22, 2019 3:16 AM

R214/R215: It's the same principle. Scheer is racking up major votes in Alberta and Saskatchewan that are useless, the Cons were going to win there anyway. What Canada needs, and what we in the US need, is Proportional Representation.

by Anonymousreply 222October 22, 2019 3:16 AM

R214, because the Cons have huge winning margins in Alberta and Saskatchewan (they got nearly 70% of all votes in both provinces while the Libs received less than 15%), and actually got more votes than the Libs in BC (10% more) and Manitoba (25% more), where the NDP got some success.

It adds up.

Trudeau is 15 seats short of a majority, and everyone in the media is calling him a loser. - While Jagmeet Singh gets wiped out in Quebec and gets reduced in seat count and the media calls him the winner of the night!

by Anonymousreply 257October 22, 2019 5:37 AM

53 seats in the Toronto and the liberal party wins 47 of them. What a fortress. Captured 49.4% of the votes. Conservatives only 30%. You want to know where Andrew Scheer lost the election? Right there.

by Anonymousreply 259October 22, 2019 5:40 AM

R257 I didn’t hear anyone call Jagmeet the winner of the night. I find it hard to believe anyone would make that claim.

by Anonymousreply 261October 22, 2019 5:42 AM

r255 Considering the Liberals have to now work with the NDP it was a good decision on your part.

by Anonymousreply 262October 22, 2019 5:44 AM

I don't get the worship of Singh, R257. I liked him at first, but then he took the con route of lying and smearing Trudeau. He's like Scheer in a way, full of empty promises that he could never fulfill. His demands were unreasonable - pull out of NAFTA, end the pipelines immediately, open up ERs of municipal hospitals (a provincial issue), tell Trump off, and so on. All easy to say when he knew he'd never become PM. I could make all kinds of promises and statements too. He's sort of a media darling at the moment, kind of like how Trudeau was leading up to 2015.

Scheer's going to get ousted I think, R258. He's undergoing a leadership review in 2020. They'll kick him to the curb because he couldn't even beat a weakened Liberal party with a tarnished leader.

Trudeau must step down before the next election. He's far too tainted now, and very, very hated in too many regions across the country. I hate Alberta as much as anyone, but you can't have this kind of divisiveness. I don't blame Trudeau 100% for how divided the country is, but his reputation will not recover. His opposition will be bringing up SNC, blackface forever and ever. He should lead for a couple of years and then move on before the next election.

by Anonymousreply 263October 22, 2019 5:47 AM

Jagmeet Singh told people to vote for what you want, pushing that relentlessly in BC - the end result was both Liberals and NDP losing seats, and the Conservatives gaining seats because the vote split allowing the Conservatives to come up the middle

by Anonymousreply 264October 22, 2019 5:47 AM

2) Trudeau also likes being fucked, also loves having his dick sucked. Can go for a long time.

3) Singh. He probably has the most stamina of the leaders, likes to experiment ans switch up positions.

4) Scheer. On. Off. Done. Missionary only. Sweaty and gets winded.

5) May. Who cares?

by Anonymousreply 269October 22, 2019 5:56 AM

Trudeau is 14 seats short and the media is coming down on his like a ton of bricks saying Trudeau needs to have a sober thought about the "rejection" by the Canadian people.

by Anonymousreply 270October 22, 2019 5:57 AM

So much of the Canadian media is American owned now, R270, and CBC has Harper appointees.

by Anonymousreply 271October 22, 2019 5:59 AM

The Party will decide if, when, and how Trudeau goes.

by Anonymousreply 272October 22, 2019 6:00 AM

R263 It seemed to me that Scheer was uninspiring and devoid of personality — moreso than the average Canadian even. But Singh was full on sociopath with his fake crying over the blackface scandal.

by Anonymousreply 273October 22, 2019 6:05 AM

Huh. Scheer's holding a press conference tomorrow. Wonder if he's resigning?

by Anonymousreply 274October 22, 2019 6:11 AM

Strongest economy in decades (thanks to Trump) and Turd-O loses his majority. That shows you how despised he is by Canadians. He was kept in power (barely) by the illegals he let swarm into the country. Liberals need to turf butterface Trudy. Singh's a loser too. NDP reduced to fourth place.

by Anonymousreply 275October 22, 2019 6:12 AM

FF R275, you idiot.

by Anonymousreply 276October 22, 2019 6:13 AM

R275 = Trump

by Anonymousreply 277October 22, 2019 6:58 AM

Another cute Liberal who won tonight was Patrick Weiler, in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast (the wealthiest riding on the West Coast):

Trump just congratulated Trudeau on his wonderful victory on Twitter, while Don Jr. made fun of his bad approval rating just two days ago. Trump family was obviously already expecting and celebrating his failure. Fakery all around.

by Anonymousreply 279October 22, 2019 8:43 AM

Disappointing Liberal results from the praries. Still glad he won though, don't get me wrong.

by Anonymousreply 280October 22, 2019 8:59 AM

Yeah, the Prairies are very Conservative.

Even Ralph Goodale went down out there tonight.

But Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada & British Columbia came through pretty well for the Liberals, so that's what mattered.

by Anonymousreply 281October 22, 2019 9:09 AM

1% R247. That's how much more popular than everyone else they were. Out of 18 million voters that's 180,000 people. The entire population of my small Ontario city.

by Anonymousreply 282October 22, 2019 11:13 AM

It's ironic that the blackface did so much damage to the brown guy. Shouldn't have cried over it; classic overtipping of the hand.

What's the post mortem on that climate denier racist's party?

Have there been any calculations done on how Trudeau would have fared yesterday had he gone through with that electoral reform?

by Anonymousreply 283October 22, 2019 11:39 AM

Exactly, R282. The Cons pulled slightly ahead in the popular vote due to running up the numbers in the rural areas, but they didn't have the numbers in the population centres in Ontario, Quebec & British Columbia, so they won fewer seats.

Was nice to see a reversal of the situation that benefitted Trump in 2016 end up helping Trudeau instead.

by Anonymousreply 284October 22, 2019 12:13 PM

I'm ready for the celebration sex, Justin!

HAHA! He's back bitches!! the OP of the other thread is crying in shame

by Anonymousreply 288October 22, 2019 1:55 PM

This was a victory over the trolls. And it's delicious.

by Anonymousreply 289October 22, 2019 1:58 PM

R271: No, it's not. No foreign entity can own Canadian media, specifically to prevent American takeover. It's literally illegal. Global, CITY, CTV are all Canadian owned and operated.

by Anonymousreply 290October 22, 2019 2:13 PM

My biggest personal regret about the Election is that I didn't think of nor use the epithet "Yankee Doodle Andy" when referring to Mr. Scheer.

by Anonymousreply 291October 22, 2019 5:12 PM

The fact that anyone is celebrating the fact that a gormless jackass like Trudeau is our Prime Minister is sickening.

And, no, I am not a Con supporter, calm down. I'm a former Liberal supporter so disgusted with the party that I abstained this election.

This government won't last anyway. They need NDP support. Now go look up the NDP's public statements re: their stance on supporting the Liberals.

And see you back at the polls within six months.

by Anonymousreply 292October 22, 2019 6:06 PM

Liberals lost a ton of seats. I don't think Trudeau will last that much longer. The writing is on the wall now. He was just was marginally better than the alternative.

by Anonymousreply 293October 22, 2019 6:19 PM

R292: Wrong. See you in a little over 2 years, with a new Liberal Prime Minster. The NDP is broke and the Bloc has no reason to pull the plug early. And I'm sorry, but you had 5 parties to choose from, 6 in Quebec, plus independents and minor parties here and there. And you didn't vote? Whatever.

by Anonymousreply 294October 22, 2019 8:02 PM

r294 the upshot is that the NDP is not going to support the Liberals, and the Liberals need them to govern. Simple as that. I take "six months" back, probably more like four.

by Anonymousreply 295October 22, 2019 8:09 PM

R295: The NDP are broke and do not want a new election. What part of this do you not understand? And even if the NDP try to bring down the government, the Bloc will likely stop it because they want this veto power they have. You really do not get how any of this works do you?

by Anonymousreply 296October 22, 2019 8:32 PM

Its just wishful thinking because they are pissed Trudeau remains PM.

by Anonymousreply 297October 22, 2019 8:58 PM

Yesterday I posted that Scheer would resign. Wrong. Am very surprised that the party want him around even as an interim leader. He'll never gain more traction so it's probably good news for the left!

by Anonymousreply 298October 22, 2019 10:59 PM

He'll be gone soon enough, R298. He's up for a leadership review next year. He swept Sask and Alberta, but didn't win anywhere else. The Cons will have to do something. They need to reflect on this whole Harper-era social conservative thing and reevaluate their position.

by Anonymousreply 299October 22, 2019 11:01 PM

the Cons could try electing someone who isn't an American, and isn't manipulated by Harper. I wonder what stopped them from doing that at their last leadership convention.

Jason Kenney and Peter MacKay are not American, as far as I know.

by Anonymousreply 300October 22, 2019 11:10 PM

Jason Kenney is a religious loon, and MacKay said he doesn't want the leadership. Rona also said no to leading the party.

by Anonymousreply 301October 22, 2019 11:16 PM

Kenney will do so much damage as a premier that no one will want him as a federal leader. Scheer seemed quite confident about staying on to fight another election, so I really hope the Cons are stupid enough to let him do so and lose again.

by Anonymousreply 302October 22, 2019 11:23 PM

I didn't say I wanted the Cons to have a decent shot at governing. I said that they could have done better than selecting an American who, after he gained leadership, didn't initiate the process of renouncing his US citizenship until a few months before the election. Mr. Trudeau is not a mental heavyweight, but a political party leader needs cunning, beyond "he did blackface over 18 years ago" (Obama seems to have forgiven Justin) and some independent thought, regardless of ideology. Mr. Scheer either does not have cunning, or chose not to use it. He did not debate capably in the English-language TV/streamed debates with Mr. Singh, Ms. May, Mr. Trudeau, Mr. Blanchet or Mr. Bernier.

Former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff's years in the UK and US were used against him by the CPC, why would anyone think an American would be more acceptable to the Canadian voter populace?

by Anonymousreply 303October 22, 2019 11:33 PM

Who do the Cons have in the wings?

What about the Liberals? I've heard Brian's name tossed around, and I think he'd be great, but I don't know for sure if he plans to run federally.

by Anonymousreply 304October 22, 2019 11:58 PM

[quote]What about the Liberals?

Someone suggested Chrystia Freeland yesterday: her western (and Ukrainian) roots might help win a seat or two on the blue prairie. At least she's smart and well-spoken; I don't know much about her as a campaigner.

I sure hope it's not my MP, Bill Morneau. I wouldn't trust that Bay St. hack with a nickel.

by Anonymousreply 305October 23, 2019 12:23 AM

I like her and I know she's a smart woman, but she's a little drab.

Morneau would be a huge no from me. I don't trust him either, R305.

by Anonymousreply 306October 23, 2019 12:28 AM

Morneau is allegedly bisexual and has a live in male partner....at least that was the rumour on Bay St. when he first ran for office.

I just watched Trudeau's speech and am I the only one who felt his tone was a bit too arrogant? He lost the popular vote and he was reduced to a minority after only one term. I'm not saying he should have been super conciliatory, but there should have been some acknowledgement that Canadians were sending him a message like they want politicians to work together. He kept going on about a "strong mandate." Don't get me wrong, I'm super happy Scheer didn't win, but this doesn't bode well.

by Anonymousreply 307October 23, 2019 1:16 AM

Did Trudeau do his speech in black face?

by Anonymousreply 308October 23, 2019 1:18 AM

I couldn't bring myself to watch the speeches. Three debates was more than enough of this bunch for me, and I was just relieved Scheer lost.

by Anonymousreply 309October 23, 2019 1:31 AM

[quote]Three debates was more than enough of this bunch

Unfortunately, the speeches were like a continuation of the debates (and not JUST because they were all talking at once). On CBC, Rosemary Barton and some members of her panel said that it seemed like they were still campaigning.

All three main speeches were disappointing, but the deficiency was especially noticeable with Trudeau. He really should have acknowledged that "we won, BUT ..." and he didn't. You'd have thought he had a huge majority.

[quote]and I was just relieved Scheer lost.

There must have been a collective, nation-wide sigh of relief when they announced that we would have a Liberal government.

By the way, I thought Rosemary Barton did a fantastic job of hosting CBC's election coverage. That has to be a tough job, but she kept things interesting throughout.

by Anonymousreply 310October 23, 2019 1:54 AM

There were no great choices this time around, but this election wasn't about choosing something amazing but averting the sharp turn to retrograde right wing policies, which seems to be something that's plagued most Western democracies in recent years (along with increased Russian interference.) I like Singh and I voted NDP but he's just not in that league yet. You have Scheer, his Trumpian populist promises, an increased presence of extreme right wing and you talk about electric cars? He needs more concrete experience and political savvy. before he runs again Had Andrea Horwath run in his place, NDP would've done much better.

by Anonymousreply 311October 23, 2019 2:00 AM

The Liberal party needs to change it's way too centrist.

by Anonymousreply 312October 23, 2019 2:02 AM

R311: Horwath is likely the next Premier of Ontario. She'll have more power in that office than as leader of the fourth place federal party.

As for the next Liberal leader (and Prime Minister), Freeland is an option, Catherine McKenna could jump in. A Liberal woman would be nice. Justin must know that this was it. He won't get another shot at this. Fatigue and apathy will only grow with him.

by Anonymousreply 313October 23, 2019 2:19 AM

McKenna is boring, but her French is decent (especially compared to Scheer and Jagmeet). I wonder how Freeland's French is coming along...

by Anonymousreply 314October 23, 2019 3:34 AM

Cutie fromer NB Premier (and possible future liberal leader) is on CBC. He now lives in Toronto and is a special assistant to the President of Ryerson University.

by Anonymousreply 315October 23, 2019 3:54 AM

He's such a cutie, R315, but he cut his hair too short. He needs to keep it a touch longer.

by Anonymousreply 316October 24, 2019 3:34 PM

[quote]By the way, I thought Rosemary Barton did a fantastic job of hosting CBC's election coverage. That has to be a tough job, but she kept things interesting throughout

Yeah, Barton did a decent job. It was her first time hosting CBC's Election Night. Mansbridge was on one of the panels. This was the first time in around 30 years that he wasn't hosting.

by Anonymousreply 317October 28, 2019 3:36 AM

r317 Saw her coverage online and i'd say she nailed it. She needs to get hired in the states and do news for a real country.

by Anonymousreply 318October 28, 2019 4:14 AM

Barton is awful, she has a permanent bitchy-mood vibe and seems kind of dumb and self-righteous. She's that fat girl from high school who made up for being unattractive by getting involved in every single extracurricular thing and then trying to dominate to serve her own ego while pretending to be a martyr.

by Anonymousreply 319October 28, 2019 7:03 PM

r319 I disagree, maybe you like getting your news from a blonde conservative size 0 no personality bimbo but i think such an event is cause for someone a little more serious but also has a nice informal style that works for that round table style setup.

by Anonymousreply 320October 29, 2019 1:29 AM

I thought she seemed unaffected and energetic. No small accomplishment in the pomposity that is the CBC.

by Anonymousreply 321October 29, 2019 1:34 AM

She's better than Vassey.

by Anonymousreply 322October 29, 2019 1:38 AM

r320 oh hi, Barton, didn't see you there, I'm sorry but you're living proof that many people never really escape high school.
