Hong Kong court upholds ban on same-sex marriage

Homosexuality has been decriminalized since 1991 in Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in '97, but gay unions remain illegal.

The long legacy of British colonization is what is blocking gay rights in so much of the world

I hate that condescending view that cultures are merely passive recipients of European colonialism. No, Hong Kong has its own innate culture and values at play here.

Considering that this scenario of making gay sex illegal plays out exactly the same way in British colony after colony, British (particularly Victorian) influence plays a strong role.

In many of the colonies, and likely in Hong Kong too, there was likely little to no stigma against gays until the British arrived.

[quote] I hate that condescending view that cultures are merely passive recipients of European colonialism.

The problem is not passive recipience, but the constant need to feel favored by the western world.

Even when colonization ended officially, these ex-colonies continued strong links to England and the west. They kept many of the British laws intact.

When the west went anti-communist and started pushing their belief in God as an alternative to the God-less communists, Christian hatred of LGBT became even more ingrained.

Oh well. Let the gays over there fight for their rights just like we had to. They need to stop being doormats and fight more.

and they are.

What the fuck are you even talking about r5? Your reply is nonsensical, it was the courts that gave America the right to same sex marriage. Exactly the same thing activists in Hong Kong just tried.

Another “blane the west for everything” troll.

Explain why something like 16/19 countries where it’s illegal to be gay and punishes sometimes by death are Muslim theocracies
