“Scream” (1996) vs “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997)

After Scream came out and gave rebirth the slasher genre, IKWYDLS was rushed into production. And it was another huge hit.

Which do you prefer?

Scream is probably the more clever film and the better written and acted film, but I always like I Know... more for some reason. I found it more fun to watch, and had way more eye candy. The four main cast members in “I Know” were all hotter than the “Scream” cast. Freddie was at his cutest, with big bright eyes and a baby face, and Ryan was hot as fuck! Plus I always like Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Great flick.

Scream does have the brilliant Drew Barrymore opener, but I Know has the wonderful Sarah Michelle Gellar chase, which still to this day infuriates me when she stops to turn around instead of running into the crowd!!!!

Plus I Know has the famous scene when Helen wakes up to all her hair cut off.

I Know has the locker room scene.

Yes. I Know also has the famous locker room scene.

Freddie was super cute in this.

He already looked less cute by the sequel one year later

To me IKWYDLS had more of an emotional impact, especially SMG’s Helen, with the bitchy sister & here on/off thing with Barry. I felt sad for her character.

Neve Campbell always seemed whiney.... maybe she’s a slut

by Anonymousreply 5October 18, 2019 6:54 AM

IKWYDLS also had the iconic balcony scene with SMG watching Barry get murdered from the stage.

by Anonymousreply 6October 18, 2019 11:53 AM

Although I do love IKWYDLS I think Scream is a better movie. It's clever, shocking, funny and self-aware, whereas IKWYDLS is a more straight slasher. SMG is iconic in it though.

The one thing I always hated in it is when she first gets the eponymous note, it reads I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER! and that exclamation point always bugged me, I thought it would have been creepier if it was just -

I know what you did last summer

I Still Know is quite fun but do not watch the weird third film in the trilogy which has none of the original characters and is complete shite.

by Anonymousreply 7October 18, 2019 12:16 PM

The third film was supposed to happen with Hewitt and Prinze coming back, as well as Brandy, but it was scrapped after I Still Know underperformed at the Box Office and with critics.

Brandy was supposed to die in I Still Know but they ended up keeping her alive due to Hewitt throwing a fit about them killing her off. Hewitt said Julie just lost her best friend one year prior, it would be cruel for them to murder his new best friend also and that Julie would lose her mind completely going through all that loss. So after they already filmed Brandy’s death etc. they added the scene in the end of her walking out and still being alive.

I Know suffers from JLH, who is one of the shiftiest actresses ever

by Anonymousreply 9October 18, 2019 12:50 PM

R3, that clip just proves to me that Jennifer Love Hewitt was never beautiful. Back in the day, everyone would go on about how hot she was. She looks like any middle American chick.

by Anonymousreply 10October 18, 2019 12:50 PM

shittiest!!!

by Anonymousreply 11October 18, 2019 12:54 PM

IKWYDLS. I liked Scream but found Matthew Lillard's mugging to be distracting.

by Anonymousreply 12October 18, 2019 12:55 PM

Didn’t we already do this EXACT thread (with identical wording) once before?

by Anonymousreply 13October 18, 2019 12:57 PM

I Know What You Did Last Thread!!

by Anonymousreply 14October 18, 2019 1:14 PM

I love both, but Scream is a true classic for Drew Barrymore’s iconic opening scene alone.

R9, JLHcan act... Sometimes. She's actually pretty good in her SVU episode, "Behave."

by Anonymousreply 18October 18, 2019 1:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 19October 18, 2019 1:41 PM

R17, it was both. My straight friends wouldn't stop talking about her perfect rack and how hot she looked. I get the boobs but her face? Nah.

by Anonymousreply 20October 18, 2019 2:11 PM

My sister also always went on about how pretty she is.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was ugly

by Anonymousreply 25October 18, 2019 2:36 PM

I love both but if I had to choose it would be Scream. And R18 she was good in that episode, I think it even made me cry lol

by Anonymousreply 26October 18, 2019 3:09 PM

Scream. I Know What You Did Last Summer is satire without self-reflection, which is what makes it worse. It was able to poke fun at the slasher genre without actually making fun of its own movie like Scream did.

by Anonymousreply 27October 18, 2019 8:27 PM

I Know was not satire

by Anonymousreply 28October 18, 2019 8:58 PM

I Know was very, very loosely adapted from a young adult novel by Lois Duncan, who was really a terrific writer for the genre. The film added buckets of gore but lost the intrigue of its source.

by Anonymousreply 29October 18, 2019 10:39 PM

I Know What You Did Last Summer was fucking terrible. Even that campy sequel was more entertaining. The best thing about it is that it inspired one of the funniest porn parody titles: "I Know WHO You Did Last Summer".

And don't you just love how they cast an actual beauty queen as Michelle Gelar's plain sister. But of course she had to wear glasses and everyone knows that in Hollywood movies: glasses = ugly.

by Anonymousreply 30October 18, 2019 10:48 PM

Scream. No one predicted those killers. You always knew who the killer was in IKWYDLS.

by Anonymousreply 31October 18, 2019 10:56 PM

Scream is obviously the better film. I Know was a forgettable B-movie.

by Anonymousreply 32October 18, 2019 11:07 PM

The one thing I never got about IKWYDLS was the weirdness of the setting. Despite being set in a costal North Carolina town it feels like it’s set in a costal New England town. They captured none of the culture of the Carolinas, but for some reason replaced it with Upper East Coast costal culture. Why was that?

by Anonymousreply 33October 19, 2019 12:29 AM

Kevin Williamson wrote the screenplay. He is originally from NC and his father was a fisherman (like the killer). He also wrote Dawson's Creek, set in a similar locale.

by Anonymousreply 34October 19, 2019 12:42 AM

SMG lost a lot of weight while filming I Know.

by Anonymousreply 37October 19, 2019 3:18 AM

I prefer IKWYDLS, mainly because I love the atmosphere of that film so much. Scream is great, but it's almost too self-aware for my tastes as far as slasher movies go. Plus, Sarah Michelle Gellar's chase scene in IKWYDLS is one of the greats; it's as good as Anne-Marie Martin's chase scene in Prom Night.

by Anonymousreply 41October 19, 2019 3:47 AM

Okay, but how about Scary Movie vs Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th?

by Anonymousreply 42October 19, 2019 3:52 AM

I think the Prom Night chase scene was definitely an inspiration for IKWYDLS. Both are great. Every time I watch both, I hope they will survive because they have done everything they can to survive.

I think Scream is the superior film but I do like both. The problem with IKWYDLS is that it loses interest after SMG's final scene. I don't care for Jennifer Love Hewitt's acting. Same thing with Scream. It's a good film but it never tops the first sequence with Drew Barrymore, which is perfect in every way.

My other issue with Scream is I thought all of the teenagers were kind of assholes and their reactions to the deaths with their smart-ass humour just seemed dumb. Yeah I know they're teenagers but I know many teens who would not behave that way.

by Anonymousreply 43October 19, 2019 3:55 AM

I remember watching Scream for the first time with my mom and sister when it first came out on VHS (actually a couple of weeks later because we would check the video store daily and it was always out) and my mom actually rewound the movie at the end of the Drew Barrymore scene and watched it again. She was shocked. She then called my stepdad into the room and had him watch it. They were both amazed and terrified by what they just watched, and also shocked a big star like Drew Barrymore was killed so fast, especially when she was used heavily to promote And sell the film.

They were excited to watch the rest of the film after that scene they considered terrifying but brilliant, and were let down by it by the end. They liked the killer reveal, but other than that they felt the movie was a let down because the opening scene was just so good.

by Anonymousreply 44October 19, 2019 4:37 AM
Okay, but how about Scary Movie vs Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th?

I still haven't seen Shriek. Does that movie have a better character than Brenda??

by Anonymousreply 45October 19, 2019 9:03 AM

R43 That’s what let me know Stu and Billy were the killers the first time I watched it. Normal teenagers don’t react to hearing their classmate was butchered like that.

by Anonymousreply 46October 19, 2019 11:27 AM

Scream was much better because it was a spoof and poked fun of the genre, whilst being clever and funny. IKWYDLS was okay but nothing special.

by Anonymousreply 47October 19, 2019 11:41 AM

Scream was never a spoof.

by Anonymousreply 48October 19, 2019 12:31 PM

Brenda is the most popular character from that series.

by Anonymousreply 54October 19, 2019 4:59 PM
Just out of curiosity, did anyone like Scream 4??

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. My problem with it was that I couldn't believe that the guilty party/parties (trying not to spoil things here) could ever physically pull off what they did. That wasn't a problem with the killers in the other movies.

Scream 3 is easily the worst IMO.

by Anonymousreply 55October 19, 2019 6:07 PM

Yeah, I watched Scream 3 recently and it does not hold up well with the exception of Parker Posey who is hilarious. Courtney Cox looks like absolute shit and Dewey should have been killed off by then. The opening kill is boring (who cares about Cotton?).

I like the ideas in 4 but the film is all over the place. I agree with r55 about the killer(s). Not believable. I also found Courtney Cox's face really distracting with all the bad plastic surgery.

Neve Campbell seems comatose in both sequels, especially 4. You just know she was doing it for the pay cheque.

by Anonymousreply 56October 19, 2019 6:49 PM

R48 You’re either an idiot or you know nothing about Scream. Wes Craven made it as a way of satirizing the slasher subgenre. That’s the whole damn reason Randy Meeks is even a character.

by Anonymousreply 60October 19, 2019 8:24 PM

Scream is immensely better.

The SMG stan here is pretty unhinged. Most people I know cheer when her horrible character dies.

by Anonymousreply 61October 19, 2019 8:25 PM

Also, Scream is in part satirical but it is not a spoof.

by Anonymousreply 64October 19, 2019 10:58 PM

Scream 3 felt like a straight-out comedy (and a pretty funny one at that). Carrie Fisher's cameo as the bitchy archivist was a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 65October 20, 2019 12:16 AM

Debbie Salt is campier and funnier in S2 than anything in S3. Plus, the 1997 Timothy Olyphant is SO hot!

I STILL KNOW doesn't make much sense as a movie. Shouldn't Bradley Cooper's beard wife have been part of the scheme? Why didn't we see her die?

S3 rips off I STILL KNOW with the previously-unknown child who is the villain.

The order of enjoyability of those movies, from best to worst, is:

SCREAM

SCREAM 2

I KNOW WHAT

SCREAM 3 ("The REAL Gail Weathers!")

I STILL KNOW

I prefer I Know... its more fun with a better atmosphere

by Anonymousreply 68October 20, 2019 2:34 AM

Neve was over it by the time Scream 3 was in production. She had it in her contract that she would only work 21 days. Guess she thought she'd have a stellar film career outside horror and we all know how that turned out. Thankfully she's embraced the convention circuit.

by Anonymousreply 69October 20, 2019 1:21 PM

Neve hates horror films. She has spoken about how she would go days without sleeping while filming, and sometimes weeks after filming was done because of nightmares etc.

That played a part in her not wanting to do anymore horror films.

It always interests me that Freddie and Sarah got married after meeting here, because their characters don’t interact at ALL. It’s funny.

by Anonymousreply 76October 20, 2019 8:17 PM

R76 and they’re still together!

This is the movie where Reese and Ryan met also. He met her when she came to visit the set

by Anonymousreply 77October 20, 2019 8:21 PM

Actually, R77, they met at Reese's birthday party. I remember reading a story about how Ryan was so in love with Reese that they would write letters back and forth while he was on location filming IKWYDLS. Seemed like PR mush to me but who knows.

by Anonymousreply 78October 20, 2019 8:29 PM

Ahhhh so she must have just visited him on set. I thought that’s how they met. Cool.

by Anonymousreply 79October 20, 2019 8:32 PM

R77 it’ll be interesting when their kids are old enough to watch IKWYDLS.

SMG also made a cameo in She's All That. I wonder if FPJ and Matthew will ever star in another movie again 😄

She's All That was filmed at the same HS that they used for Buffy (and 90210)

^As well as Not Another Teen Movie and Bruce Almighty (which also filmed there).

by Anonymousreply 83October 21, 2019 8:49 AM

IKWYDLS I love. My only problem with it is the last act is anticlimactic. You have Helen's amazing chase scene. Then you get to Julie's turn with the killer on the boat, and I find it boring.

by Anonymousreply 84October 21, 2019 11:40 AM

R77 - Ahh, Reese and Ryan were really beautiful together. I was sad when they broke up.

by Anonymousreply 85October 21, 2019 1:05 PM

R85 i don't think Reese was when Ryan made an ass of himself at the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 86October 21, 2019 2:48 PM

"Scream" by a long shot. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" just used all the corny tropes that "Scream" is lampooning. I hated the slow walking killer, the scene when SMG is screaming and terrified at the door and her sister just casually walks to the door to let her in and the pageant scene - more lighting than a Broadway stage- and while SMG sees the horror in the rafters, everybody somehow dogpiles on her for no reason to hold her back. It's just dumb. "Scream" is a slasher and a great mystery with real stakes.

by Anonymousreply 87October 21, 2019 2:53 PM

lol, what did he do? R86. I've since learned about his behavior on another thread. Oh, well.

by Anonymousreply 88October 21, 2019 3:00 PM

I remember rumors that Ryan was very jealous of Reese after she hit it very big and he couldn’t generate a hit while she was.

And then she won an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 89October 21, 2019 3:42 PM

IKWYDLS is more fun but I would have liked to see the original script.

The film was going to follow the book closer, which was a psychological thriller but no one dies, until Scream came out and was a huge smash hit, so they rushed to change it to a slasher flick.

They added in the Max character last minute and killed him off quickly to show the audience that the bad guy was willing to kill and the group of 4 were in true danger vs him toying with them the entire flick until he starts killing toward the end.

by Anonymousreply 90October 21, 2019 3:45 PM

R89 - And... I oop. What an ass, you'd think he'd be proud of her!

by Anonymousreply 91October 21, 2019 3:49 PM

Summer had the hotter people

by Anonymousreply 92October 21, 2019 4:05 PM

“Scream” is roughly 100 times the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is.

“I Know” is more comparable in quality to “Scream 2,” which is more by-the-numbers than the original but still effective. SMG manages to steal both, even though she only had a cameo in the latter.

by Anonymousreply 93October 21, 2019 4:06 PM

They both came out right as I was getting into horror and they'll both always have a place in my heart. I think Scream is the smarter, better film, but I Know has that fantastic sequence with Sarah Michelle Gellar at the end. I really loved her character and wished she'd been the lead. I thought she had a more interesting character trajectory going from slightly conceited big fish in a small pond, moving to New York and realizing she didn't have what it takes, and moving back home and being brought back down to size. There was something really tragic about her character.

Scream, of course, has that opening with Drew Barrymore which has to be one the top 10 scariest sequences of all time. Rewatching it recently, some of the humor and spoof-y stuff doesn't quite hold up, but there's an interesting murder mystery at its core and I love Courtney Cox as Gale. She's probably my favorite character in the series and has the best arc in Scream 2 where she realizes she's a horrible bitch and starts to fall for Dewey.

I think Laurie Metcalf's unhinged performance in Scream 2 tops everything in both series. Watching that, I knew we were looking at a future Oscar nominee right there.

by Anonymousreply 94October 21, 2019 5:20 PM

I know people keep mentioning it, but the Drew Barrymore death in the original Scream really is one of the scariest sequences I’ve watched. So clever, so brutal, and brilliantly acted by Barrymore. I love that she was approached for the lead and went “nah I’ll play the girl who dies on page 6.”

by Anonymousreply 95October 21, 2019 7:39 PM

I think Scream did itself a disservice by making that opening sequence so brilliant. Where else could you go but down after that? And all the openings to the sequels paled in comparison. The opening for Scream 2 was pretty good, but the ones for 3 and 4 were weak as could be. I still laugh at how some of the movies within the movie during the opening of 4 were scarier and more effective than the actual "real" opening we got. The alternate version was way better. Not perfect, but at least there was a viciousness to it.

by Anonymousreply 97October 21, 2019 8:06 PM

Urban Legend was not a big hit.

Scream - $103 million

I Know What You Did Last Summer - $72 million

Urban Legend - $38 million

R101 I made that my ringtone

by Anonymousreply 102October 21, 2019 8:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 103October 21, 2019 8:30 PM

Tara Reid was pretty likable in Urban Legend and got a decent, suspenseful chase scene, too.

by Anonymousreply 104October 21, 2019 8:33 PM

Urban Legend would have been better with a decent leading actress. Alicia Witt always makes me sleepy.

by Anonymousreply 105October 21, 2019 8:33 PM

I always felt bad for Jada in Scream 2. She dies thinking her boyfriend killed her.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 106October 21, 2019 8:38 PM

Jada's character annoyed the shit out of me. I was happy when she died. And seeing what she's became makes me enjoy the opening whenever I rewatch it.

Alicia Witt had the personality of dial tone in Urban Legend. She must give AMAZING head. No other explanation for her being cast in the lead. No way could she attract someone with the looks of Jared Leto.

by Anonymousreply 107October 22, 2019 12:14 AM

Jada was great. Her opening scene was pretty iconic.

by Anonymousreply 108October 22, 2019 12:27 AM

R88 he was just very drunk and a little too enthusiastic when Reese won. Yelling and whatnot.

R96 most of the deleted scenes from Scream 4 should have been left in. Like the one that mentions Tatum.

by Anonymousreply 109October 22, 2019 2:53 AM

Urban Legend is the only one of the three late ‘90s slasher franchises that generated an Oscar winner!

by Anonymousreply 110October 22, 2019 6:05 AM

Well, R110, Anna Paquin was in Scream 4 in 2011, but she practically had a cameo.

by Anonymousreply 111October 22, 2019 6:07 AM

R93, SMG’s role in Scream 2 was not a “cameo.” She had two scenes, and a third scene was filmed with Portia de Rossi and Rebecca Gayheart but didn’t make it into the final cut.

A cameo is a brief appearance by a well-known person, usually that appearance has some special significance (such as Chita Rivera, the original Velma Kelly, appearing in the film version of Chicago), or uncredited appearances by renowned people. Example... Roseanne, Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp were well known people who had brief appearances in Freddy’s Dead, or Carrie Fisher’s brief appearance in Scream 3.

SMG was up-and-coming at the time, she had fourth place billing, and her scene was perhaps the most iconic in the film.

by Anonymousreply 112October 22, 2019 6:17 AM

Speaking of Urban Legend, Rebecca Gayheart is a killer in real life. She ran over a 9 year-old Mexican boy.

by Anonymousreply 113October 22, 2019 6:30 AM

Didn't Brandy run someone over too??

by Anonymousreply 114October 22, 2019 6:41 AM

I must be the only one who hated Laurie Metcalf in Scream 2. She was way over the top and sitcom-y. It was like "Aunt Jackie finally goes nuts."

Miss Lois Duncan, who wrote the book, wasn't happy about it. Here's what she said in some interview
What I, personally, have a problem with are the stories (usually on television where action takes the place of introspection) where violence is sensationalized and made to seem thrilling rather than terrible. I was appalled when my book, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," was made into a slasher film. As the mother of a murdered child, I don't find violent death something to squeal and giggle about.

By the way, her daughter's murder was never solved. Here's an interesting buzzfed article about it.
I must be the only one who hated Laurie Metcalf in Scream 2. She was way over the top and sitcom-y. It was like "Aunt Jackie finally goes nuts."

Timothy Olyphant was too. I always laugh when his character comes back for one last scare.

I never liked Olyphant in Scream 2.

Jerry O’Connell was so cute in it.

R112 SMG had fourth billing because the cast list was in alphabetical order.

We can disagree on what constitutes a cameo, but Gellar herself referred to her work in Scream 2 as such.

by Anonymousreply 120October 22, 2019 2:55 PM

R120, and that’s why Omar Epps wasn’t in the top billing, even though is part was just as big as Jada Pinkett’s.

by Anonymousreply 121October 22, 2019 4:25 PM

R120, Geller was misusing the term. Look it up on Wikipedia.

By your definition, you might as well call Judi Dench’s role in Shakespeare in Love a “cameo.”

by Anonymousreply 122October 22, 2019 4:27 PM

I'll give Gayheart this - she owned up to it and didn't try to evade the law and seemed genuinely horrified by it. That's better than a lot of other hit and run people. I don't think her career ever recovered, though, which is a shame, because I really liked her.

by Anonymousreply 123October 22, 2019 4:47 PM

R123, Gayheart is a REAL woman, unlike Bruce Jenner.

by Anonymousreply 124October 22, 2019 4:56 PM

I agree 100%, r115. I'm not sure what happened to Metcalf but she started going over the top in the later seasons of Roseanne and has had trouble reining it in since.

by Anonymousreply 125October 22, 2019 6:08 PM

Scott Foley stunk up the whole series with his performance in Scream 3. Worst ever.

For what it's worth, I too love Urban Legend, and group it with Scream and I Know... as the quintessential '90s slashers. Urban Legend had a fantastic atmosphere, a creepy score, and that fantastic chase scene with Tara Reid.

by Anonymousreply 128October 22, 2019 7:02 PM

I say this as a huge Buffy fan: Gellar's part in Scream 2 was a bit part. She had the very cool death scene (though nowhere near as awesome as the I Know chase) and the classroom scene where she was an ascended extra and I believe they threw her in last minute so the audience would connect more before she got tossed.

by Anonymousreply 129October 22, 2019 7:03 PM

Urban Legend is fun, but definitely nowhere near the same level as Scream and I Know. And I say that as someone who has the Scream Factory Blu.

by Anonymousreply 130October 22, 2019 7:13 PM

A cameo is Channing Tatum in “This Is The End”.

SMG was not a cameo. A small part but not a cameo.

And Brandy didn’t run anyone over, she got in a car crash and the other person died.

by Anonymousreply 131October 22, 2019 7:16 PM

Didn't Wes Craven find SMG a bit of a diva on the Scream 2 set and Jenny McCarthy's character in Scream 3 was based on her? Jenny's character's name was "Sarah Darling" (which was apparently how Craven referred to SMG).

If that's true, I have a whole new respect for Craven.

by Anonymousreply 132October 22, 2019 11:14 PM

R129, yes, Gellar’s role was a supporting role, but it wasn’t a cameo appearance.

by Anonymousreply 133October 22, 2019 11:39 PM

R132 lol yes

by Anonymousreply 134October 23, 2019 1:08 AM

Gellar originally as just going to be in her kill scene. They had filmed a film theory class scene in Atlanta before she signed on and then reshot it in LA to establish her character and give a little more meat to her role. And give Mickey a reason to want to target her after they sparred in class.

by Anonymousreply 135October 23, 2019 1:42 AM

It wasn't the way Metcalf acting, it was the fact that she was cast in such a small role that it was obvious she'd be a twist. Now every time we see some bigger name with a small role that turns out to be the big bad, we refer to it as the Laurie Metcalf School of Casting.

by Anonymousreply 136October 23, 2019 1:54 AM
It was the fact that she was cast in such a small role that it was obvious she'd be a twist.

I finally watched Gosford Park a few years ago, and that is the reason I figured Helen Mirren was the killer.

by Anonymousreply 137October 23, 2019 2:01 AM

Maybe it's just me, but being told I have a [italic] hard on for Cameron [/italic] isn't exactly an insult.

by Anonymousreply 138October 23, 2019 2:45 AM

Maybe not, but he certainly reacts to it. A normal person could've let it go but a psychopath sees his next target.

by Anonymousreply 139October 23, 2019 3:40 AM

She was already a target. They were copying Woodsboro, and they need to kill someone named Casey. SMG's character's name was C.C., the first name was Casey.

by Anonymousreply 140October 23, 2019 3:56 AM

I think it was Metcalf's acting that was over the top. She was not a star at the time. Crazy Aunt Jackie. From her first scene as a reporter, she was super-hyper and not realistic. Then the auditorium scene just ruined it.

by Anonymousreply 141October 23, 2019 5:09 AM

I can’t believe the amount of replies I got over my use of the word “cameo.” It’s defined as “a small character part in a play or movie, played by a distinguished actor or celebrity.”

R140 she was named Cassandra Cooper in the original script and they just took it to be similar enough to “Casey.” Glad they changed it.

by Anonymousreply 142October 23, 2019 5:10 PM

R142, I really feel like that’s an incomplete definition.

by Anonymousreply 143October 24, 2019 3:34 AM

R142, I mean, yeah, but SMG wasn’t exactly what you’d call a “distinguished performer” at the time, she was more up and coming. Also, cameos tend to be fleeting or somewhat meta in nature.

Her appearance in “She’s All That” is a cameo because by that time, “Buffy” was a more established show.

by Anonymousreply 144October 24, 2019 3:41 AM

R144 also if you blink you missed her. She was literally an extra

by Anonymousreply 145October 24, 2019 4:03 AM

SMG was great in I Know... her death was rushed in Scream 2

by Anonymousreply 146October 26, 2019 3:58 AM

SMG is the best part of I Know... I loved her in it.

by Anonymousreply 147December 29, 2019 2:16 AM

She really was R147. A very, very good performance in a thankless role

by Anonymousreply 148December 29, 2019 2:19 AM

Scream is the better made film, better written film etc. but I overall enjoy I Know more. It feels more psychological than Scream, and would be just that if they took out that one awful scene that had no business being there.

I also liked her. I became a fan of hers when she played Dylan's wife Toni on Beverly Hills 90210. I was sad when her character was killed off. I give Gayheart credit for owning up to her crime.
Urban Legend would have been better with a decent leading actress. Alicia Witt always makes me sleepy.

I agree. Last year, it was airing one of the Showtime channels and I decided to watch one of the airings because I hadn't seen it in years. Viewing it again, it didn't come off as a horrible slasher movie, but Alicia Witt dragged it down with her wooden acting.

My brother and I watched Scream 2 in theaters and he made some comment afterwards about it was weird that "Jackie: from Roseanne was cast in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 176April 26, 2021 1:49 AM

R116 I live in New Mexico and the unsolved murder of Lois Duncan's daughter comes up in the local media outlets every few years. I vaguely recall rumors about a documentary.

by Anonymousreply 177April 28, 2021 3:56 AM

Scream feels like you're taken on a little journey and get to understand each of the main teens. IKWUDLS felt very constrained like a typical horror movie. Both movies are great in their own ways but also have weaknesses that annoy me. The party in Scream never felt anywhere close to the opening scene. Just like ok chasing her around a bit. IKWUDLS loses my attention when SMG gets killed. Just felt like a lame ending. Ending on a boat just wasn't scary and it was a short final showdown.

by Anonymousreply 178April 28, 2021 4:09 AM

Scream, hands down. I watched it at a drive-in with my friend who was from the area where they shot it, & told me about the production disrupting minor stuff in her hood, though she wasn’t involved in it. It made me have a greater appreciation for the movie. The only downside to seeing it at the drive in was it rained, my windshield wipers were lousy, & they didn’t clear the water & dirt off, everything was smeared & a bit blurry.

by Anonymousreply 179April 28, 2021 7:41 AM

Both are great. Scream is the better movie, but for me, IKWYDLS was slightly more suspenseful. I had a huge crush on Freddie Prinze Jr, so I was worried if his character would survive or if he would be revealed to be the killer. I had both on VHS.

by Anonymousreply 180April 28, 2021 9:15 AM

I had a hard time with SMG in I Know and Scream 2. It was hard for me to watch her be sorta helpless after seeing her fight so often on Buffy. I remember waiting for Helen to beat the shit out of The Fisherman, but she just stopped and died instead.

by Anonymousreply 181April 28, 2021 10:34 PM
Well, [R110], Anna Paquin was in Scream 4 in 2011, but she practically had a cameo.
