Operation Bernhard was an exercise by Nazi Germany to forge British bank notes. The initial plan was to drop the notes over Britain to bring about a collapse of the British economy during the Second World War.

The BBC made a comedy/drama about it in 1981 called 'Private Schulz'.

It would have failed even if they had produced perfect forgeries as the average wage was under £5 at that time, £5 notes weren't widely used by the public. You could buy a small house for less than £200 in most of the country.
If they had managed to produce good £1 notes the scheme may have worked.
